[Bug 1958639] [NEW] Intel WiFi 6 AX210 hardware stops working

2022-01-21 Thread ThomasA
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu 20.04.3:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS
Release:20.04

I am running Ubuntu on a Lenovo ThinkPad P14s with Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX210 Wi-Fi
interface. This used to work up to kernel 5.11.0-46 (which loaded iwlwifi
"firmware version 59.601f3a66.0 ty-a0-gf-a0-59.ucode op_mode iwlmvm").
Recently, Ubuntu auto-upgraded my kernel to first version 5.13.0-25 and then
5.13.0-27. Both of these kernel versions load iwlwifi "firmware version
63.c04f3485.0 ty-a0-gf-a0-63.ucode op_mode iwlmvm" and then my Wi-Fi interface
no longer works.
This is the error output from `dmesg` when running kernel 5.13.0-25:

[Bug 1933649] Re: Focal Fossa 20.04.2.0 Live installer only displays black screen with no ability to install

2021-06-28 Thread ThomasA
I have verified the checksum of my downloaded image and it is OK.

Also, the live image performs a file system check on boot which also
completes OK.

I am convinced that this is appropriate as a bug report rather than a
support case. I actually do absolutely nothing to end up in this state.
I simply wait for the install image to finish booting as I have usually
seen it do with previous versions of Ubuntu. Rather than ending up with
a usable desktop showing an option to install Ubuntu, I just get this
black screen with the Ubuntu logo.

The strange white rectangle seems to me to be an indication that
something is wrong. It is as if it is an artefact of a window not being
displayed properly on screen. If I click around the screen randomly, I
can sometimes by chance "grab" an apparently invisible window on screen
which draws more odd, white artefacts on screen when I drag it around.

I suspect it could be some kind of graphics driver issue. The Focal
Fossa default desktop background *does* display correctly on screen for
a couple of seconds before it ends up in this useless black state.

This computer is currently running Ubuntu 18.04 with no apparent
problems and has been doing so for several years. I have been using
Linux for more than twenty years and Ubuntu for about 10, so I am not
quite a novice anymore.

[Bug 1933649] [NEW] Focal Fossa 20.04.2.0 Live installer only displays black screen with no ability to install

2021-06-25 Thread ThomasA
Public bug reported:

I am attempting to install Ubuntu 20.04.2.0 from a freshly downloaded Live
image on a USB stick.
My computer boots from the image and I get to the point where it displays an
empty desktop with the Focal Fossa background image.
After displaying the empty desktop for a few seconds, the screen switches to
black with a white Ubuntu logo towards the bottom and a narrow vertical white
rectangle which I suppose is an artefact of some menu that it fails to display
properly.
I would expect Ubuntu to either display the desktop to me, populated with
various icons such as a shortcut to install, or display some install menu to
me. Neither happens; it only displays this black screen where I cannot do
anything. I attach an photo of this.
This is quite a problem as it prevents me from installing Ubuntu 20.04.2.0.
I am able to switch to a terminal by pressing CTRL+ALT+F2 and log in as
"ubuntu", but I have no idea what I would have to do to initiate the install
from the terminal or somehow fix the broken desktop environment from there.

[Bug 1295267] Re: Windows change Monitor/Desktop after screen lock

2016-05-20 Thread ThomasA
I have reported on this issue before and I last experienced it in 14.04.
I can confirm that my set-up is also two identical monitors; one connected via
HDMI and another via DP.
Contrary to some other affected users here, I used to have the problem in
14.04, but I do not seem to experience it after upgrading to 16.04.

There might actually be something about the screen resolution. I am
observing this behaviour on my stationary PC with two Dell U2410 screens
running at 1920x1200. I am still running Ubuntu 14.04.

[Bug 1423151] Re: openafs-modules-dkms 1.6.7-1: openafs kernel module failed to build

@Achim: I have now removed the openafs packages from my system and re-
installed openafs-client (and dependencies) from the updates channel.
`klog` works again now. Hard to say exactly what went wrong in the
process but at least it is back in working condition now.

Strangely, it worked for me when I installed Achim's package above. My
problems in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/trusty/+source/openafs/+bug/1423151/comments/34
appeared when I removed the package from Achim's PPA and installed the
one from trusty-proposed instead.

[Bug 938654] [NEW] Dist upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 fails

2012-02-22 Thread ThomasA
Public bug reported:

Yesterday, I upgraded my Ubuntu from 10.04 to 10.10, which seemed to
work fine. Today I attempted to take it further to 11.04, but this
failed somewhere in the process with no detailed explanation of what
went wrong.

[Bug 817041] Re: Ubuntu-desktop depends on nvidia-common

2011-09-08 Thread ThomasA
I experienced this problem in Natty when trying to uninstall nvidia-
common. I solved it in Synaptic by marking nvidia-common for uninstall
as well as marking ubuntu-desktop for reinstall. This seemed to work; I
got rid of nvidia-common and still have ubuntu-desktop.

[Bug 318545] Re: package menu 2.1.40ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-03-09 Thread ThomasA
I have experienced a similar problem trying to install bum (depending on
menu). Here are the details attempting to install menu (soory, my Ubuntu
is in Danish):

t...@tha-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install menu
Indlæser pakkelisterne... Færdig
Opbygger afhængighedstræ
Læser tilstandsoplysninger... Færdig
menu er i forvejen den nyeste version.
0 opgraderes, 0 nyinstalleres, 0 afinstalleres og 0 opgraderes ikke.
1 ikke fuldstændigt installerede eller afinstallerede.
0B/434kB skal hentes fra arkiverne.
After this operation, 0B of additional disk space will be used.
(Læser database... 145879 filer og mapper aktuelt installeret.)
Gør klar til at erstatte menu 2.1.40ubuntu1 (med
.../menu_2.1.40ubuntu1_i386.deb)...
install-info: No dir file specified; try --help for more information.
dpkg: advarsel - gammelt pre-removal-script returnerede afslutningsstatus 1
dpkg - forsøger i stedet script fra ny pakke...
install-info: No dir file specified; try --help for more information.
dpkg: fejl under behandling af
/var/cache/apt/archives/menu_2.1.40ubuntu1_i386.deb (--unpack):
underproces nyt pre-removal-script returnerede afslutningsstatus 1
install-info: No dir file specified; try --help for more information.
dpkg: fejl under oprydning:
underproces post-installation script returnerede afslutningsstatus 1
Der opstod fejl under behandlingen:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/menu_2.1.40ubuntu1_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I have looked at the following message (and the other meassages in the
thread): https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-
devel/2005-October/012349.html . I have identified that the problem in
my case also seems to be caused by the wrong 'install-info' being used:

t...@tha-desktop:~$ which install-info
/usr/local/bin/install-info
t...@tha-desktop:~$ ls -l /usr/local/bin/install-info
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 51 2009-02-27 15:54 /usr/local/bin/install-info -
/usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/i386-linux/install-info
t...@tha-desktop:~$

So, the problem seems to be caused by my PATH containing paths in an
order that uses /usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/i386-linux/install-info.

I worked around the problem by specifying a modified PATH for apt-get as
follows:
sudo
PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/game
apt-get -f install menu
There may be more elegant ways of working around this?

[Bug 339921] [NEW] emacs-goodies-el scripts not available from Emacs 22.2

2009-03-09 Thread ThomasA
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: emacs-goodies-el

I have installed the following emacs-related packages

emacs22
emacs22-common
emacs22-bin-common
emacsen-common
emacs-goodies-el
auctex
emacs-intl-fonts

Trying to 'require' emacs-goodies-el's script 'color-theme' in my
.emacs, I dicovered that this was not available. I searched for color-
theme.el and found it in the following location: /usr/share/emacs/site-
lisp/emacs-goodies-el/color-theme.el. I had to link /usr/share/emacs
/site-lisp/emacs-goodies-el/ it into the directory /usr/share/emacs/22.2
/site-lisp/ to make it work.

I have experienced this on Ubuntu 8.10 i386.

[Bug 155811] printers print garbage after dist upgrade

2007-10-22 Thread ThomasA
Public bug reported:

I have just upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy using a dist upgrade. Before the
upgrade, I had two printers set up for my PC which worked perfectly. The
printers are a HP LaserJet 4100dtn and a Color LaserJet 4600dn. I print to them
using CUPS and they are both connected through IPP. The whole setup used to
work flawlessly under Feisty.
Having upgraded to Gutsy, the printers now print garbage. I have both tried
printing from a document in kpdf and printing a test page from the printer
management window in Gnome. When I say they print garbage, it looks as if they
print the actual PS code as raw text.
