[Bug 884933] [NEW] eds keeps prompting me for calendar passwords

2011-11-01 Thread Tim Cole
Public bug reported:

EDS keeps popping up dialogs asking me for passwords for my Google
calendars, even though I checked "remember password", and the actual
password appears to be filled in. I checked via wireshark and I'm not
experiencing any authentication failures either, so there's absolutely
no reason to keep asking me. This is driving me crazy because the
dialogs are popping up in clusters every few minutes, and there's
nothing I can do to make them stop popping up.

After upgrading from natty, shutdown and restart don't work. Choosing
"shut down" or "restart" from a logged in session just kicks me out to
lightdm as if I had chosen "log out", and from lightdm, "shut down" and

there's apparently temporarily no default version of python at that

from completing.

[Bug 532137] Re: Wacom Intuos2 tablet hotplug only works once after booting

2011-03-17 Thread Tim Cole
It's definitely a kernel issue. Hard-coding the serial numbers to a
fixed value let userspace work properly, so long as only a single tool
was in proximity at one time (the serial numbers are how individual
tools are distinguished).

[Bug 532137] Re: Wacom Intuos2 tablet hotplug only works once after booting

So, in a nutshell: the wacom kernel driver doesn't always initialize the
device properly, and as a result it sends bogus tool serial numbers in
events to userspace.

I think this might simply be a race during device initialization, which
would explain why some people seem to see it and some don't.

When the tablet is non-working it is actually getting a serial of 0 for
every proximity event. This isn't fixed by unloading the wacom module
and unplugging the tablet, which leads me to believe that there's a
problem with the lower-level (USB?) driver stack.

Chris Bagwell wrote:

I quickly looked at the Xorg.log files from launchpad below. Right after
hotplug of tablet, usbParse() goes in infinite loop and prints message about
invalid serial #. Not positive its infinite loop but at least the log stops
with no messages beyond repeating error message. If you wait long enough,
perhaps the tablet corrects itself?

Intuos1 and Intuos2 are unique in that they get serial # from hardware itself
and used by xf86-input.wacom. Serial # is a unique value that allows tracking
multiple tools at once.

You've found a case were tablet streams out packets in a way that serial # is
sent as zero. Either tablet is saying a zero value or else an if() statement
is getting confused and not allowing to init values correctly.

This is all on kernel side, BTW.

Since I do not own own of these tablets, I do not have much more to offer. I
can only say it appears mostly a kernel side bug from information so far

not sure which is the most common case.

not xinput. Similar results with the livecd, though I wasn't able to run

2010-06-22 Thread Tim Cole
The Xorg side of things seems to be working okay (and we've proven that
the problem is on the kernel side using evtest above), so all that
should really be necessary to check for the existence of the bug is the
following:

1) with the tablet plugged in (the first time), run `xinput list` to find out
the tablet's device ID (look for the entry without "eraser" or "cursor")
2) run `xinput test ID`, where ID is the ID from
3) observe that scribbling on the tablet generates input events
4) unplug the tablet
5) observe that `xinput list` no longer lists the tablet
6) plug it back in
7) observe that the tablet is back with `xinput list` (normally it will get the
same ID again, but check)
8) run `xinput test ID` again, and observe that scribbling on the tablet no
longer generates events

not the same as the issue originally described. (We do see the tablet
being plugged in in Xorg.log each time, the kernel driver just isn't
generating events anymore.)

[Bug 511844] Re: Wacom Tablet is only recognized on first plug

2010-06-22 Thread Tim Cole
Apparently evtest only works for pointer devices while X isn't running.
Anyway, with X turned off temporarily I can get useful output from it.
Apparently this is a kernel issue, and not an X issue, since I can
replicate the bug without X.

Steps to reproduce:

1) plug in a tablet (first time since boot)
2) sudo evtest /dev/input/wacom
3) scribble on the tablet and note events received
4) unplug tablet
5) plug tablet back in
6) note that events are no longer received by evtest when you manipulate the
tablet

Once the tablet is unplugged, the tablet driver remains in a non-working
state until reboot.

However, except for the first time the tablet is plugged in, it doesn't
actually work. When using `xinput test`, no events actually seem to be
getting generated by the device.

[Bug 597123] [NEW] wacom kernel driver ends up in non-working state after first unplug

2010-06-22 Thread Tim Cole
Public bug reported:

Once a wacom USB tablet is unplugged, the wacom driver enters a non-
working state. If the tablet is plugged in again, the device will be
detected, but it won't generate any events. udev and device creation
appear to work as normal, however.

Steps to reproduce *when X is not running, e.g. via `stop gdm`*:

1) plug in the wacom tablet (if it isn't already plugged in)
2) `sudo evtest /dev/input/wacom`
3) scribble on the tablet surface with the stylus and note that events are
reported
4) unplug the tablet
4b) note that /dev/input/wacom no longer exists
5) plug the tablet back in
5b) note that /dev/input/wacom exists again
6) `sudo evtest /dev/input/wacom`
7) scribble on the tablet surface with the stylus again

Expected result:

Events are generated, like the first time the tablet was plugged in.

Actual result:

No events are generated.

The tablet doesn't start working again until the machine has been
rebooted.

 playback_1 and playback_2 each map to one of the stereo channels (left, right)

In particular, from Applications|Internet|Ubuntu One, the choices for
"show icon" are "Always", "When updating", and "Never". It sounds like
you might be happiest with "Never", though as Joshua notes, "When
updating" should be the default. (Please let us know if you got a
different default for some reason.)

Implementing support for custom sync directories has been discussed, but
there don't yet appear to be bugs for tracking that yet, so I created a

[Bug 432893] [NEW] xinput screen coordinates offset from core pointer

2009-09-18 Thread Tim Cole
Public bug reported:

Since I upgraded to Karmic, the cursor position reported via XInput is
offset from the core pointer position by a considerable distance. This
happens in all the XInput-supporting apps I've tried, including Inkscape
and the Gimp. Note that this is when the input device is configured in
screen mode, where the two positions are supposed to coincide.

If I prepared another patch which also fixed x25/x52pro, would that be
accepted?

[Bug 300143] Re: tablet devices show up as non-functional joysticks

2009-09-17 Thread Tim Cole
It seems to me that the correct fix in this case would have been to fix
the x25/x52pro drivers to not advertise BTN_DIGI, since they are not
that sort of device, rather than re-regressing the way tablets are
handled. :(

[Bug 400966] Re: gnome terminal should highlight user entered text for easy parsing

2009-07-29 Thread Tim Cole
This seems clear-cut enough; the request is effectively for VteTerminal
to show echoed input in a different style from text written to the ptty.
This would require some changes to VteTerminal in libvte, and some
changes to gnome-terminal to add corresponding preferences.

[Bug 384344] Re: [3G] NetworkManager does not detect ZTE AC8710 CDMA/EVDO 3G USB Modem

2009-06-21 Thread Tim Cole
Ive noticed that your device shows 4 ttys and i will assume that ttyUSB0
is the cdma modem since you say you can connect with wvdial on that tty.

These are the steps I followed to get my modem recognized by
NetworkManager.

The clue here is the line that says:
"Jun 6 23:06:13 xxx NetworkManager: (ttyUSB0): found serial port (udev:
hal:CDMA)"

In a working configuration I would expect it to say:
"Jun 6 23:06:13 xxx NetworkManager: (ttyUSB0): found serial port
(udev:CDMA hal:CDMA)" I'm guessing.

When you plug in your device, there are some udev rules that get run.
One of the rules that gets run, probes the modem to determine its capabilities.
If this probe does not execute correctly, NM will not know that it can use your
device.

The program that probes is /lib/udev/nm-modem-probe.

You can run this standalone to check that you modem is probed correctly.
try /lib/udev/nm-modem-probe --verbose --export /dev/ttyUSB0

You show get a bunch of output and ultimatleey two lines that read something
like,
ID_NM_PROBED=1
ID_NM_CDMA=1 (just guessing here, mine is GSM).

Once you know the modem is being probed correctly, check that the rules are
configured correctly.
In jaunty the live in
/lib/udev/rules.d/77-nm-probe-modem-capabilities.rules

for testing you could use something like

ACTION!="add|change", GOTO="nm_modem_probe_end"
SUBSYSTEM!="tty", GOTO="nm_modem_probe_end"
KERNEL!="tty*", GOTO="nm_modem_probe_end"

SUBSYSTEM=="tty", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", DRIVERS=="?*",
ENV{NM_MODEM_DRIVER}="$attr{driver}"
SUBSYSTEM=="tty", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{bInterfaceNumber}=="?*",
ENV{NM_MODEM_USB_INTERFACE_NUMBER}="$attr{bInterfaceNumber}"
SUBSYSTEM=="tty", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="?*",
ATTRS{idProduct}=="?*", IMPORT{program}="nm-modem-probe --vid 0x$attr{idVendor}
--pid 0x$attr{idProduct} --usb-interface $env{NM_MODEM_USB_INTERFACE_NUMBER}
--driver $env{NM_MODEM_DRIVER} --delay 3000 --export $tempnode",
GOTO="nm_modem_probe_end"

LABEL="nm_modem_probe_end"

If this does not work, please attach the verbose output of nm-modem-probe.
Also attach the ouput of udevadm query all on the /sys/class/tty/ttyUSB0 path.

Alternately, it may be that the xulrunner package should be providing a
