[Bug 910672] Re: [REDWOOD] dell U2410 monitor repeatedly turns itself on and off when suspended

2013-08-19 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
Apologies for not updating this ticket. I've been running fedora for the
last few releases. The fedora bug
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=714334) has been fixed for
a while now.

Given that it originally occurred on both, hopefully it's just an an
upstream fix that ubuntu will get if you've merged xorg-x11-drv-ati,
version 6.14.3. I'm afriad I can't test it out though, as I no longer
run ubuntu - perhaps one of the other affected users can test?

[Bug 998200] Re: wrong driver for wifi RTL8111/8168B

2012-05-21 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
@avejidah, I installed the backports-network package on Oneiric,
rebooted, and could no longer connect at all. I uninstalled it and now I
can connect, again, but I am still having the extreme slowdowns. I am
glad I also have wireless.

Also, I have powered down and disconnected the PC from AC power, but in
my case, that did not help, either. Maybe our problems are different. My
ethernet connection stays up, but it varies from full speed to extremely
slow (800 bps or worse) every few seconds, then back to full speed, etc.

[Bug 377175] Re: Volume Up button locks screen

2012-04-27 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
output from Eduard Hasenleithner's instructions.

Only one of my devices logged anything when I pressed the volume up
button, so I've only included that one.

It seems to be sending the keyboard.f9 event, which is inded mapped to
coffee.

Note: I'm now running fedora 17 beta, but this bug has been with me through
multiple ubuntu fedora versions, so I don't think it's distro-specific.

[Bug 872711] Re: Kernel does not report some USB printers correctly, making them not being detected by CUPS

2012-02-17 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
My Canon MP630 printer was working just fine in Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit
until about a week ago. I discovered it had stopped working, yesterday.
I tried to reinstall the printer, but I cannot get it added back. It is
no longer detected by the printer add dialog or even by lsusb.

I wonder if the upgrade to 3.0.0-16 killed it?

Since it is completely undetected, none of the suggested troubleshooting
procedures produce any helpful output.

[Bug 919874] [NEW] cannot set attributes on symlink

2012-01-21 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
Public bug reported:

xattr seems to read attributes from symlinks, but always set them on the
underlying file. Here's an example by way of a shell session:

$ cd /tmp
$ touch target
$ ln -s target source

 import xattr
 symlink = xattr.xattr('source', options=xattr.XATTR_NOFOLLOW)
 underlying_file = xattr.xattr('target')
 symlink['user.test_xattr'] = '1'

# now we should have an attribute on the symlink itself, and nothing on
the underlying file. But the opposite is true:

2012-01-21 Thread Tim Cuthbertson

using the setfattr command from the `attr` package.

Illustrated with the setfattr command:

[Bug 910672] [NEW] [REDWOOD] dell U2410 monitor repeatedly turns itself on and off when suspended

2012-01-01 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
Public bug reported:

Originally reported in fedora's bugtracker here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/process_bug.cgi
But I've since moved to ubuntu. The bug is still present, so I thought I should
report it here as well.

Description of problem:
Monitor does not standby / turn off, but instead keeps entering and leaving
standby.

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. xset dpms force off

Actual results:
The monitor goes dark (but not off). A few seconds later, the monitor shows me
an entering power save mode message and then actually turns off the
backlight. A second or so after that, the monitor backlight is turned on again,
with a DVI cable symbol in the top left corner as if a cable had just been
plugged in (my computer is connected to my monitor with DVI, and nothing else
is plugged into the monitor). Seconds later, it shows the message about
entering power save mode. This repeats indefinitely.

This also happens using the normal power saving settings, and leaving my
computer alone for 5 minutes.

Expected results:
Monitor should turn off / enter standby until I wake it

[Bug 851339] Re: wireless driver rt2800pci unable to connect

2011-11-09 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
This bug is still in effect on production Oneiric 11.10 release with

Will rt2800pci ever be fixed so that it actually works?

[Bug 886061] [NEW] window dimensions are not consistent between get_outer_rect and move_resize_frame

2011-11-04 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
Public bug reported:

If you have at least one non-maximized window open, and run the
following script (just paste it into looking glass) you should see a
window get smaller, despite the fact that the code should be a no-op. It
is reading the current bounds of the window + frame (via
get_outer_rect), and then assigning them back (via move_resize_frame):

(function() {
var log = global.log;
var resize_noop = function(w) {
log(resizing window  + w.get_title());
var r = w.get_outer_rect();
log(resizing to existing size:  + r.width + x + r.height +
 @  + r.x + , + r.y);
w.move_resize_frame(true, r.x, r.y, r.width, r.height);
r = w.get_outer_rect();
log(and now it is:  + r.width + x + r.height +  @  + r.x
+ , + r.y);
};

var ws =
global.screen.get_workspace_by_index(global.screen.get_active_workspace_index());
log(ws = + ws);
var windows = ws.list_windows();
var win = windows[0];
log(win =  + win);
resize_noop(win);
})();

For background, this behaviour is causing windows to shrink over time in
`shellshape` (http://gfxmonk.net/shellshape/), which I develop.

I *think* the bug may be related to the gtk3 theme padding / shadow
properties specific to ubuntu, as the same code worked fine in fedora 15
(although that was gnome-shell 3.0.1, so it could also be a 3.2 change).

For reference, here is the log output I get. Note that the window
dimensions do indeed shrink after the call to move_resize_frame:

  JS LOG: ws = [object instance proxy GIName:Meta.Workspace
jsobj@0x7ff79bc60510 native@0x9cb4e0]
  JS LOG: win = [object instance proxy GIName:Meta.Window
jsobj@0x7ff79a0e11b0 native@0x142d5f0]
  JS LOG: resizing window tim (/home)
  JS LOG: resizing to existing size: 1898x1115 @ 0,26
  JS LOG: and now it is: 1880x1097 @ 9,34

2011-10-08 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
@pfaffman:
My patches are visible in that bug I linked, but that will do ubuntu little
good as:
 - they fix a similar bug in mutter, not compiz (ie. they would help if you
want to run gnome-shell, but this is a unity bug. I linked it because the fix
*may* be similar, but I have zero knowledge of the compiz/unity codebase)
 - you're better off with owen taylor's patch (see the thread), which was the
one eventually committed for mutter 3.2

[Bug 819144] Re: [fglrx] everything is black and blinks when using unity

2011-08-25 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
After this afternoon's package updates (94 updates, many of them
unity*), Unity 3d is now working with the latest fglrx
(2:8.881-0ubuntu1) on my Oneiric system.

I hope it lasts a while.

[Bug 762032] Re: alt+tab broken with click-to-focus off

2011-08-16 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
There's a remarkably similar bug in gnome shell:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=597190
I've submitted a patch against mutter that fixes it, although it hasn't been
accepted yet. I don't know how much is shared between mutter / compiz, but the
thread and patch may be at least enlightening even if the patch can't be
applied (assuming the reason for breakage is the same).

[Bug 770708] Re: r8169: eth0: link is not ready after dist-upgrade

2011-06-10 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
I discovered my system's problem and it may be the same as yours. The
Ubuntu 11.04 kernel loaded the wrong driver for my NIC. It loads r8169
but it should load r8168. I found the correct driver at the Realtek
Taiwan site, installed it, blacklisted r8169, and now my connection is
stable.

I believe my problem is the same or very similar. My wired connection

integrated Realtek NIC, using driver r8169.

[Bug 710762] [NEW] Middle mouse button no longer works

2011-01-31 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

[Bug 683355] Re: Natty os-prober fails to detect Maverick installation

2011-01-14 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
Renate, here is what you need to do to work around the problem. You will
need to know wher hardware device Maverick is installed on, e.g.,
/dev/sda2 - yours may be the same, or it may be different.

Then, when booted into Natty, run command sudo fsck /dev/sda2 == Maks
sure to use the correct device for your system

This will fix your Maverick filesystem, then you can run sudo update-
grub in Natty and it will detect and configure Maverick, too.

[Bug 683355] Re: Natty os-prober fails to detect Maverick installation

2010-12-06 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
I am starting to make some headway on my os-prober / grub2 issue.

Today, there was a new kernel for Natty. When it installed, it gave a
grub2 syntax error. I got around the error by running install-grub,
which ran without error, but again failed to detect Maverick on the
other partition. When I rebooted to Natty, it was using the new kernel.

But, as Maverick is my main-use installation, I have to be able to boot
to it. So, once again, I booted to the Maverick Live DVD and installed
Maverick's grub2. That detected both Maverick and Natty. Maverick booted
fine, but when I booted Natty, it was back on the previous kernel
version.

So, on a hunch, I manually ran os-prober in Natty, then ran grub-
install, again. That did the trick. I can now selectively boot Natty or
Maverick, and when I boot to Natty, it runs the current latest kernel.

This is all to say, things are still quite a mess, but I have learned
how to force them to work.

[Bug 683355] [NEW] Natty os-prober fails to detect Maverick installation

2010-11-30 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: os-prober

When Natty has to update-grub, it always fails to detect my Maverick
installation on another partition. This problem started about two weeks
ago, prior installations of Natty detected the Maverick partition,
correctly. Today, I did a fresh Natty install from the Nov-30 alternate
ISO image and was able to find the following in the installer syslog:

Maverick is on sda2 and, for some reason, os-prober is unable to access
it.

Release is Natty 11.04. os-prober is 1.41. grub is
1.99-20101126-1ubuntu2.

Whenever I install Natty or install a Natty kernel update, grub2 loses
the ability to boot to Maverick. To workaround, I have to run the
Maverick Live CD and manually grub-install. The Maverick grub2 and os-
prober correctly configure both my Maverick and Natty partitions.

[Bug 674756] Re: completion displays incorrect choices when COMPREPLY words contain / characters after the longest common prefix

2010-11-16 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
this bug on the bash-completion has been closed. The workaround is to
not use -f in the call to complete (I don't know enough to tell if
it should be fixed or if the workaround is sufficient).

[Bug 674756] [NEW] completion displays incorrect choices when COMPREPLY words contain / characters after the longest common prefix

2010-11-12 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash-completion

I'm using a completion function to complete the argument to `0launch` from a
list of known URLs. Given the input 'http://g', my COMPREPLY array contains the
following array (each line is an element):
http://gfxmonk.net/dist/0install/appengine-auth.xml
http://gfxmonk.net/dist/0install/dbus-python.xml
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/parallel.git/plain/packager/0install/parallel.xml

When I press tab twice, bash shows me the following possible completions
(since all options start with what I've already entered):

$ 0launch 'http://gtabtab
appengine-auth.xml  dbus-python.xmlparallel.xml

This is not the correct list of completions, it seems to be displaying
only the part of each completion after the final /. If I actually
typed the first letter from one of these options, it would be wrong (and
would not complete any further).

Note that there seems to be nothing wrong with the contents of the
COMPREPLY array itself, as when I type:

$ 0launch 'http://gftab

It successfully completes the argument to the longest common prefix,
which is 'http://gfxmonk.net/dist/0install/

Bash version: 1:1.2-2ubuntu1
Ubuntu version: 10.10

I initially tried to report this upstream, because I doubt it's ubuntu
specific. I posted it to
https://alioth.debian.org/tracker/index.php?func=detailaid=312825group_id=100114atid=413095
 but:
 - I couldn't log in properly
 - My line breaks got removed
 - I can't add any further comments

So it seems I've made a bit of a mess of that. Hopefully someone here
can help, or at least knows how to use the upstream bug tracker? ;)

[Bug 377175] Re: Volume Up button locks screen

2010-10-10 Thread Tim Cuthbertson
I also have this bug, also with a macalley IceKey. I reported it over
here [
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9946901posted=1#post9946901 ]
because I couldn't for the life of me figure out what package it should
be assigned to, but my symptoms are identical.

I am running lucid, and there was a response yesterday that stated the
issue is still present in maverick.

I am using nVidia current proprietary driver, 195.36.24. gnomines is
working perfectly with the same driver in Lucid. Also, it worked fine in
Maverick (and the same video driver) until some update I received about a
week ago.

Thank you for your attention. If the problem is not worth pursuing, it is no
big deal.

Pedro,

Ok, I got advice on Ubuntu Forums to use program scrot to get a screenshot
in Maverick. It works, but unfortunately, when I go to the terminal screen
to run scrot, gnomines goes into Pause mode, so that is the screen that the
shot is made of. It will not help to solve the problem.
