[Bug 945028] Re: network printing via LiveBox: cups-ipp-missing-validate-job
Hardware details: my printer (HP MFP 3300) is attached via USB to a NetGear ReadyNAS. Worked fine until upgrading to 12.04. I upgraded to 1.5.3-0ubuntu2~ppa11. Results: 1. Just trying to print with an unmodified queue did not work 2. Changing to ipp14 worked (hurray!) 3. Trying ipp and appending ?version=1.1 and printing a text file worked, with a caveat: the following text appeared below what I was printing, ERROR: timeout OFFENDING COMMAND: timeout STACK: -mark- -mark- -mark- 4. Trying ipp and appending ?version=1.0 seems to work without the above error. I've been able to print both a text file and a web page. My print status notifier (KDE) does show the message "cups-ipp-missing-job- history", but this doesn't seem to prevent it from producing output. I have the impression, however, that ipp14 produces a printed page _much faster_ (maybe threefold) than ipp. So for the time being I'll stick with ipp14. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/945028 Title: network printing via LiveBox: cups-ipp-missing-validate-job To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/945028/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 711397] Re: package firmware-b43legacy-installer 4.178.10.4-5 failed to install/upgrade due to unsupported hardware
It seems the right solution depends on your card. If I understand correctly, my BCM4306 rev 2 card is not supported by the bcmwl driver, so the solution above is not relevant for me even if it works for many others. If I were to guess at the problem, the firmware-b43legacy-installer is fooled by a component of the output of lspci: lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4 02:03.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4320] (rev 02) I think the 14e4:4320 makes b43legacy-installer convinced this is a BCM4320 card, which is b43 and not b43legacy. Hence it refuses to install. However, this page: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43 suggests that this output is expected and that one really is supposed to use the b43legacy firmware. After first ensuring that b43-fwcutter was installed, I followed the "manual" instructions later on that page: export FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR="/lib/firmware" wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o sudo b43-fwcutter -w "$FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR" wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o After a reboot, I had to manually start the driver: sudo modprobe b43legacy But then it seems to work (it finds and connects to my network). [Bug 718316] [NEW] Maverick sometimes fails to resume from suspend
Public bug reported: On my hardware Maverick sometimes fails to resume from suspend. This happens with varying frequency: sometimes I can go for a few days (with 2-3 sleep/wake cycles per day) and other times it happens several times per day. I have to hit the power button to force a shutdown, then wait, then reboot. It never gets to the point of activating the screen or an external monitor, and does not respond to CTRL-ALT-Delete. The laptop used to suspend/resume reliably with Maverick. However, in one respect Maverick is an improvement: under both Karmic and Lucid, it would often take ~20 seconds to resume. With Maverick, when it works, it resumes essentially instantly. I've saved a couple of extra files (kern.log and syslog), if you want them. After it failed to wake one time (Feb 13 11:54:01), I did have one reboot to fix an apparently-unrelated issue (graphical corruption when using KMS, I turned off KMS and rebooted). [Bug 625220] [NEW] Desktop size and monitor disconnect not handled gracefully
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I've been trying Maverick daily build from Aug 26, 2010, in both the Ubuntu and Kubuntu variants. My laptop (a Thinkpad T60) has a 1400x1050 screen (4:3), and I've also been plugging in an external Monitor (Dell S2409W) with 1920x1080 resolution (16:9). Here is a reasonably comprehensive report on the display switching situation, which overall is showing signs of considerable improvement but needs a bit more love (see particularly points #5 and #6 below): 1. Booting with external monitor connected: works in both (this fixes bug #570011 for me; I verified that the "drm" kernel module was loaded and no errors appeared in the dmesg) 2. Booting with just the laptop, and then plugging in the monitor and switching resolution: works in Kubuntu, not tested in Ubuntu, but I presume this works fine. 3. Setting resolution after plugging in external monitor: works in both, although only Kubuntu readily supports my preferred configuration (cloning the display but using the native resolution on both screens; I use this because at work I connect my laptop via a docking station on a shelf above my desk). In Ubuntu, if I check "same image in all monitors" then I have to use the same resolution in all monitors, which is the lower 1024x768 or 1280xsomething (don't remember now). Kubuntu lets me use 1920x1080 on the external monitor while using 1400x1050 on the laptop, and making one a clone (incomplete, of course) of the other. 4. Auto-detection that a new monitor has been plugged in, and asking the user if he/she wants to configure the display: works in Kubuntu, does not work in Ubuntu (is it supposed to?) 5. Auto-detection that a monitor has been disconnected, and asking the user if he/she wants to configure the display: does not work in either. In Kubuntu there is the extra amusement that manually configuring suddenly causes the automatic system to realize something has happened. In other words, if I manually navigate to the systemsettings->Display and Monitor, once I click the Display icon it (1) gives me the display configuration window, and (2) also pops up the dialog that should have popped up when I disconnected the monitor. If I say I want to configure it, then I get a second window (essentially copies of each other) for doing the configuration; if I click Ignore, then just one opens. (This bug is also present in Lucid.) 6. Changing desktop size after a monitor disconnect: In Ubuntu, before I run the configuration dialog, the desktop is the same as before I disconnected the monitor (meaning that there is a whole virtual desktop to which my mouse can move, windows are located, etc, but which I cannot see). However, once I run the dialog it resizes the display AND the desktop, providing me with the experience I expect when running with the laptop alone. In Kubuntu, the situation is different: if I start out running in the mode where each display is running at its maximum resolution, the desktop is naturally the larger of the two. If I then disconnect the monitor, and go to the configuration dialog, then here is the problem: it knows the display is already 1400x1050, and so the Apply button is grayed out. However, the desktop size is 1920x1080, and there is no user-visible way to fix that. Configuring a lower-resolution display does _not_ change the desktop size, there are still windows over the edge and my mouse can navigate off-screen. (What I usually do is run "xrandr --auto" from the command line.) 7. I have not yet had a chance to test whether bug #476357, triggered when I switch back and forth between two different external monitors at work and home, is finally fixed (it is still broken in Lucid). This bug definitely counts as the most serious issue of all, because it requires an X restart, which is sufficiently annoying that it discourages me from switching between monitors. I will test when I get a chance. [Bug 620329] [NEW] Radeon Xorg starts in "low graphics" mode
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Testing Maverick alpha 2 (kubuntu). When booting off the live CD, a GTK dialog pops up saying "Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode". I looked at the logs, and there were no obvious problems: it detected the correct chipset (X1400), and the two monitors (the laptop's built-in as well as the Dell external monitor). However, I did notice a line saying "Setting physical screen size to 270x203". >From the "low graphics" menu, I tried to select "Configure X" but that didn't do anything. Eventually I elected to restart X. This brought up KDE, though everything started in 1024x768 and I had to manually set the resolution to 1920x1080. I changed the status to "Confirmed" because I am still having the problem of a very slow file picker on a fresh install of Lucid. I don't recall having this problem on Karmic. [Bug 570011] Re: Modesetting fails if large screen monitor attached at boot
Yet another update. It turns out that compositing proved not to be the culprit; things got bad faster if compositing was on, but eventually it happens anyway even if compositing was off. I was teaching recently and the display on my laptop was fine, but the display that the class saw was weaving in a slow samba dance. A bit embarassing. Had to reboot to fix it. I now think the real culprit is kernel mode setting. I added a file /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf with the following line: options radeon modeset=0 Since I added this, I have not seen wiggling displays. It is back to being a bit more like my previous experiences: I frequently have to restart X if I want the monitor to be recognized at its highest resolution. However, at least the display itself works, and the machine is more stable than with KMS on. -- Modesetting fails if large screen monitor attached at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570011 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 583749] [NEW] impress will not play movies
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org When I try to insert a movie clip into an ooimpress presentation, impress "hangs" temporarily on the file-picker. Then it ends up popping back to the "Normal" view but with the video clip showing the icon (of a speaker?) that I have come to associate with a broken link to a movie. The movie will not play. Furthermore, opening any file with an inserted movie causes impress to respond very sluggishly (~4s delays) to mouse clicks and any attempt at editing the file (although sometimes it seems to be able to get itself out of this problem, at least until I click on a slide that has video in it). Using kubuntu 32-bit. This may be related to bug #575237, but because that was for 64-bit and the description is slightly different, I thought it would be better to file this as a separate report. (In particular I can not find a single movie file format that plays correctly, so making a .mpg as suggested in that report does not help.) Re: [Bug 583430] Re: kubuntu userconfig can silently delete group membership, causing loss of privileges
Thanks for following up on this so quickly. I see your point. However, if the user doesn't check that "Privileges & groups" tab (carefully), then s/he might not know s/he had been deleted from the group. To me personally, the issue of deciding which is primary is largely separate from the issue of which groups I belong to. But I can see that different people might conceive of this differently. -- kubuntu userconfig can silently delete group membership, causing loss of privileges https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/583430 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to userconfig in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 583430] [NEW] kubuntu userconfig can silently delete group membership, causing loss of privileges
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: userconfig Changing the "primary group" assigned to a user deletes the membership in the original group, although the GUI claims otherwise. This bug is quite serious, because it can effectively lock a user out of his/her own machine: if the user's original primary group is "admin" and there is no other account on the system with "admin" privileges (e.g., if a root password has not been defined, as is common in (K)ubuntu systems), then this bug can easily eliminate all admin privileges from all accounts on the machine. Thus, there is no way to administer the system without going into a "rescue" mode. How to reproduce: 1. Open up a konsole, and type "groups username" where username is the name a of user on the system. 2. Open K menu->System settings->Advanced tab->User management, supply admin password. 3. Select the user that you used above, and click "Modify" 4. Change the "Primary group" to something different; don't click "Apply" yet. 5. Click the "Privileges & groups" tab. Verify that the new primary group is checked, and also note that the old primary group is also checked. Now click "Apply". 6. Go back to the command line, and type "groups username" again. You will note that---despite what it said in the check list of group membership in the GUI---the original primary group has been deleted from the list of groups. [7. If you don't want to mess up your system: before quitting the GUI, repair the damage by going back to the "Details" tab and restoring the original primary group. Check everything on the command line to make sure it's right.] So if "admin" was the primary group, and one exited the GUI after #6, there would be no way to restore admin privileges without using another account that does possess admin privileges or booting into single-user mode. In my view, the "Change primary group" should only present the user with a list of the groups to which he/she already belongs (rather than the current "show all groups") and should just change the ranking of the groups within that list. [Bug 570011] Re: Modesetting fails if large screen monitor attached at boot
I have now installed Lucid on a new hard drive, and with a bit more experience I can amplify this report a bit. It turns out that this largescreen monitor also fails even if the monitor is connected after the boot process, IF compositing is turned on. The only reliable way to get the monitor to work is to first turn desktop effects off. However, if I turn desktop effects off (in Kubuntu's SystemSettings->desktop) and then reboot with the monitor connected, this is not sufficient to fix the boot problem: I still get the "wiggly lines" on the kdm login screen (and thereafter). I wonder if specific problems during booting might have something to do with compositing being on at some point during the process, before my own configuration turns it off? I think the reason I didn't notice this extra twist when I was trying the live CD is that compositing must have been auto-disabled; I have noticed that happening frequently on its own. I now just turn off desktop effects all the time and wait to connect the monitor until after I have logged in. These steps appear to work around the problem. -- Modesetting fails if large screen monitor attached at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570011 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 570011] Re: Modesetting fails if large screen monitor attached at boot
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: I have a Thinkpad T60. If I boot from the RC1 live CD, graphical modesetting seems to work well if the external monitor is not connected at boot time. If I then plug in the monitor, I can then switch to a new resolution (1920x1080) from the old resolution (1400x1050). Switching back and forth multiple times seems to work well, in the 10 minutes I've been playing with the system. However, if I boot with the monitor connected, then the resolution is set to 1024x768 on both screens, and when I try to set the resolution to something more useful, eventually the entire screen starts flickering with weird horizontal lines on the laptop's monitor, and the external monitor display wiggles around rapidly. The display is not usable under such circumstances. External monitor: Dell S2409W Apparent workaround: boot with monitor disconnected, and then after logging in, connect the external monitor. [Bug 570011] [NEW] Modesetting fails if large screen monitor attached at boot
Public bug reported: I have a Thinkpad T60. [Bug 511524] Re: kmail "send queued messages" grayed out inappropriately
I kind of agree with PascalCavy's comment #3. You might be better off letting that "Report a Bug..." menu entry connect users straight to KDEbugs and bypassing Launchpad. In principle, I don't think it's unreasonable for Kubuntu to "hijack" the KDE bug report feature; but given that you've decided to do so, it would seem incumbent upon the project to then manage any bug reports, passing them upstream as needed. Otherwise, you may be doing more harm than good. There is no way a typical user can be expected to figure out whether it is a KDE bug or a Kubuntu bug. Given that KDE is the one maintaining the source tree, really it's better if _they_ get the bug reports and then can decide whether it's a Kubuntu-specific problem. I'd much rather see problems fixed in the source tree, once and for all, than just for one specific release of Kubuntu. -- kmail "send queued messages" grayed out inappropriately https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/511524 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdepim in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 507546] Re: rpcinfo can't contact portmapper
I should also add: because in my testing I was alternating among the "old fashioned" /etc/network/interfaces, network manager, and wicd, I had turned off the "old fashioned" style by simply deleting /etc/network/interfaces. Network manager still configures lo properly in that case, but seemingly wicd does not. It seems one must have this line: auto lo iface lo inet loopback in the /etc/network/interfaces as described here: http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/6527/1/. -- rpcinfo can't contact portmapper https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/507546 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 507546] Re: rpcinfo can't contact portmapper
I have found the problem: I had switched to wicd for managing my wireless (I was using a hidden SSID and have not had luck with network manager). wicd wasn't configuring the loopback (lo) interface. I switched back to NM, which does configure lo, and all seems well (well, I haven't tested Retrospect, but the others are OK). ** Also affects: wicd Importance: Undecided Status: New -- rpcinfo can't contact portmapper https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/507546 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 511524] [NEW] kmail "send queued messages" grayed out inappropriately
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdepim Steps to reproduce this problem: 1. Put your network in some state where you can't send email (e.g., disconnect from the cable or wireless). 2. Compose a message to yourself and send it. After a while you will get the dialog saying the message can't be sent, and will be placed in your outbox 3. Under the file menu, you will now see that "Send queued messages" and "Send queued messages via..." will be enabled. If, at this point, you chose one of them, everything would be fine. 4. However, in this case don't do it right away: navigate to another folder, read some messages, etc. 5. Now check the file menu again: "Send queued messages" and "Send queued messages via..." will now be greyed out, even though that message is still queued in your outbox. You can send the message by selecting your outbox, which will re-enable those two menu options. I would think that the proper behavior would be to enable "Send queued messages" and "Send queued messages via..." anytime there are messages waiting in your outbox. [Bug 511263] [NEW] kmail message selection bug can result in lost mail
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdepim Here's how to reproduce: 1. Send 3 messages to yourself. Check your mail and receive them. In your inbox (or whatever folder), they might look like this: Test3 Test2 Test1 All 3 messages should be in the "unread" state. 2. Select the first message (Test3). Delete it. You'll note that, as is noble and good, the message Test3 disappears and now Test2 is selected. Yay! 3. Now comes the part that is less noble or good: hit "+" to go on to the next unread message. You'll note that _both_ Test2 and Test1 are now selected. If you hit delete, _both_ are gone. Rats! The proper behavior would be that, after deleting Test3, only Test2 is selected, and when you hit "+" only Test1 should be selected. Thanks in advance for your attention to this! [Bug 507546] [NEW] rpcinfo can't contact portmapper
Public bug reported: Using Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), an upgrade from Jaunty. After the upgrade, I'm getting a number of weird networking problems (though basic webbrowsing & email work fine): 1. I can't mount an NFS partition, one that has worked on this laptop with every previous version of Kubuntu, and one that still works on other computers. If I do $ sudo mount /usr/lab I get mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking. mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd. So then I do this: $ sudo start statd and get this: statd start/running, process 18709 Then this happens again: $ sudo mount /usr/lab mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking. mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd.: but $ sudo start statd start: Job is already running: statd so then I do this: $ rpcinfo -p and it hangs for something pretty close to 3 minutes and then says this: rpcinfo: can't contact portmapper: RPC: Remote system error - Connection timed out See also this: $ ps ax | grep port 18017 ?Ss 0:00 portmap 18878 pts/27 R+ 0:00 grep port 2. Whenever I try to print something from okular, the window freezes for about 3 minutes and then the print dialog comes up. The printers I want (network printers) are not shown in the list. 3. My department uses Retrospect (commercial closed-source software) for backups, and I haven't been backed up since I upgraded. The problem, again, is that when I try to start the backup client it hangs for about 3 minutes but then fails to come up. So it smells like some pervasive networking problem. But I don't really know where to start. I'd be happy to provide more information, if I knew what to provide. [Bug 359542] [NEW] amarok2 doesn't advance to next track
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: amarok Kubuntu Jaunty beta. If I double-click on an album in my collection, the first track gets played, but then amarok stops playing. Also, the bug "next track" and "previous track" buttons at the top left don't do anything (and neither do the ones in the "Amarok" menu). I can double- click on each track in the playlist in turn and get it to play, but when done it always stops and never goes on to the next track. I've looked for a setting "stop after current track" and can't find anything except a context menu when I right-click on a given playlist item. However, selecting that menu item (hoping to un-select something...) doesn't do anything, as far as I can tell. One hint about what's going on: on the command line, when the current track finishes I get the following output: QString::arg: Argument missing: Amarok - No track playing., 0:00 QString::arg: Argument missing: Amarok - No track playing., 0:00 amarok(12437) CurrentTrack::dataUpdated: CurrentTrack::dataUpdated QString::arg: Argument missing: Amarok - No track playing., 0:00 QString::arg: Argument missing: Amarok - No track playing., 0:00 QString::arg: Argument missing: Amarok - No track playing., 0:00 QString::arg: Argument missing: Amarok - No track playing., 0:00 amarok(12437) CurrentTrack::dataUpdated: CurrentTrack::dataUpdated amarok(12437) CurrentTrack::dataUpdated: CurrentTrack::dataUpdated amarok(12437) CurrentTrack::dataUpdated: CurrentTrack::dataUpdated Starting a new track (by double-clicking) also yields output, but far fewer: QString::arg: Argument missing: Amarok - No track playing., 0:00 amarok(12437) CurrentTrack::dataUpdated: CurrentTrack::dataUpdated I have a hard time believing that this is broken for everyone, because it's such an obvious bug; I'm wondering whether it could be setup-specific. Note I reported a K-menu bug with amarok also, leading me to wonder whether there is some package error that is only affecting my machine. Here are amarok-related packages on my machine: t...@diva:~/personal$ dpkg -l amarok* Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Inst/Cfg-files/Unpacked/Failed-cfg/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend |/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ Name Version Description +++--- ii amarok 2:2.0.2mysql5.1.30-0ubuntu2 easy to use media player based on the KDE 4 technology platform ii amarok-common2:2.0.2mysql5.1.30-0ubuntu2 architecture independent files for Amarok un amarok-engine (no description available) pn amarok-engine-xine (no description available) un amarok-kde4 (no description available) pn amarok-xine (no description available) Alternatively, perhaps it has something to do with a bug in the string handling, and there's something unusual about how my files are named? [Bug 334066] Re: xorg is terribly slow after Intrepid -> Jaunty upgrade
Just to clarify: for me, it essentially locks the machine hard. It doesn't respond to anything: CTRL-ALT-DELETE, CTRL-ALT-BACKPACE, or even the SysRq keys. I've waited as long as 15 minutes to see if it would eventually respond to one of these key combinations before hitting the power button. However, I can SSH in to the machine successfully; it's slow, but I can execute command-line functions (I didn't try X forwarding, assuming it wouldn't work). -- xorg is terribly slow after Intrepid -> Jaunty upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/334066 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
