[Bug 1927948] Re: Windows switch monitor after resuming from sleep

2021-12-04 Thread Timur Tabi
Would it be possible to "lock" the monitor configuration so that even if
Ubuntu does not detect all of the monitors, it doesn't care?

I understand that one laptops and some other systems, changes in the
monitors are common. But I have a desktop PC with two monitors
attached, and that does not change.

[Bug 1931612] Re: Print dialog box shows same printer twice

2021-06-14 Thread Timur Tabi
The GTK developers tell me that this is fixed in the latest version of
libgtk. How do I upgrade libgtk to the latest version on Ubuntu 20.04?
Is there a way I can pull in an update for just this package from a
newer version of Ubuntu, without breaking everything else?

"systemctl stop cups" removes the wrong entry -- the one that actually
works. So now I can't print any more.

Interestingly, "systemctl start cups" does not restore the printer.
Looks like I will have to reboot now to restore printing.

[Bug 1931612] Re: Print dialog box shows same printer twice

2021-06-11 Thread Timur Tabi
This bug is a little different because the Printers system setting only
shows one printer. See attached screenshot. So even though I have only
one printer configured, it shows up twice in the actual print dialog
box.

Also, I'm using Kubuntu.

[Bug 1931612] [NEW] Print dialog box shows same printer twice

2021-06-10 Thread Timur Tabi
Public bug reported:

I have set up a single HP printer which is attached to my network. The
setup process went smoothly, and when I open the Printers system setup
panel, I see only my printer there.

However, when I print from an application, and that application uses the
system print dialog box, my printer appears twice. One entry, matching
the name correctly, works fine. The other, which a slightly changed
name, does not work at all. See attached screenshot.

Applications that have their own print dialog box do not have this
problem. For example, Firefox shows only my printer once. Same thing
with Libre Office.

[Bug 1919189] [NEW] Crashes when trying to eject DVD in DVD is in folder view

2021-03-15 Thread Timur Tabi
Public bug reported:

Dolphin crashes when I try to eject a DVD (right-click on DVD name in
Devices panel, then select Eject) and that DVD's folder is being viewed
in Dolphin.

If I click on any other folder, and then try to eject the DVD, that
works.

Presumably, viewing the DVD in Dolphin "opens" and locks the DVD, so
when I attempt to eject it, Dolphin gets confused and crashes.

Instead, Dolphin should unmount the DVD and then eject it.

[Bug 1907282] [NEW] Some calendar entries still show after meeting declined, can't be deleted

2020-12-08 Thread Timur Tabi
Public bug reported:

I frequently revieve, via a mailing list, calendar invitations to
recurring meetings. I decline most of these meetings. When I use the
outlook365.office.com web interface, everything works fine. Meetings
that I have declined do not appear in my calendar.

However, some of those declined meetings still appear in my Evolution
calendar, and nothing I do will get rid of them. The invitation email
is in the trash. If I open the email, I am given the option to decline
the meeting (again), but declining it does nothing.

If I right-click on the meeting in the calendar, I am able to open the
meeting panel, but the status says "Confirmed", which is false. I can
change that to "Cancel", but saving the changes also does nothing. I am
not able to close that panel unless I chose to discard all changes.

I can also try deleting meeting, but again, that does nothing. I get an
error message that says,

"Failed to delete an event in the calendar “tt...@nvidia.com : Nvidia”

Cannot remove calendar object: The specified object was not found in the
store., The process failed to get the correct properties."

I don't know how to further debug this, nor do I know why some meetings on my
calendar behave this way. I suspect that somehow Evolution receives and
automatically processes the invitation before I have a chance to manually
decline it.

[Bug 909823] Re: okular doesn't print landscape pdfs properly unless i force portrait printing

2020-11-05 Thread Timur Tabi
I've attached a document that prints in portrait even when I tell it to
print in landscape. This document is 8.5x5.5 inches. In order for me
to print it in landscape, I need to go into the Printer Properties and
tell it to print in portrait.

This is with KUbuntu 20.04 (Okular 1.10.0), so it's still broken even

everyday, as an event that spans an entire week all month long. This
only occurs if the event is visible, so we see this effect only on May
and June, not any other month. It also happens in May and June of 2021
and any other year.

[Bug 1878956] [NEW] Shutdown continues even after cancelled by application

2020-05-15 Thread Timur Tabi
Public bug reported:

1. Open a text editor of any kind and edit any document. Do not save
2. Initiate a shutdown from the GUI menu
3. The application will prompt you save because it's being closed. Select
"cancel" to abort the save and close. The file won't be saved and the
application will not close.
4. After a few seconds, the computer will immediately shut down, losing your
document changes.

This means that when a shutdown is initiated, there's nothing the user
can do to abort the shutdown.

What should have happened is that Ubuntu should have noticed that the
shutdown was cancelled. That's how Windows and Mac works.

[Bug 1875204] Re: .desktop files inside folders on the Desktop cannot be launched

2020-05-03 Thread Timur Tabi
The desktop-icons developer denies responsibility for this bug and says
the bug belongs to Nautilus. But you're saying that Nautilus is
removing that feature. So who's responsible for fixing it?

[Bug 1875204] Re: .desktop files inside folders on the Desktop cannot be launched

2020-05-03 Thread Timur Tabi
So I'm confused. You say it's an upstream Gnome issue. The desktop-
icons developer says it's a Nautilus issue, since Nautilus handles
folders. Issues 158 and 184 imply that Nautilus is not going to
implement anything. Everyone is blaming everyone else. So who's really
responsible?

[Bug 1875204] Re: .desktop files inside folders on the Desktop cannot be launched

2020-04-27 Thread Timur Tabi
If you're curious, here's the contents of gedit.desktop:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Terminal=false
Name=GEDIT
Exec=/usr/bin/gedit

Note that when gedit.desktop is located in ~/Desktop, the icon just says
"GEDIT" (which is what the "Name" field says above). However, when it's
located in ~/Desktop/TEST, it's treated like a normal file and is
labeled "gedit.desktop".

I just don't understand how Ubuntu could be missing basic GUI features
that literally every other operating system has had for decades. What
is so controversial about putting desktop icons in folders?

There so many things that I can't do with the Desktop:

1) I can't drag/drop files from the desktop to/from other folders. Did
you notice that I had use the Copy and Paste context menus to copy the
file to the TEST folder?

2) I can't drag/drop files to applications in the launcher.

3) I can't drag/drop files from the Desktop to any open application.

The root cause for all these problems is that the Desktop is not treated
like any other Nautilus folder. It's its own special, dysfunctional
thing. This is in contrast to every other GUI out there.

[Bug 1026869] Re: Firefox accepts dictionaries and spell check entries from every which spell check backend, leaving problems with defaults and the language selector enables this behavior

2020-04-18 Thread Timur Tabi
I have installed the en-us language pack in Firefox, and I've tried many
of the "fixes" I found on the Internet, but this problem remains for me.
For instance, "honor" is flagged but "honour" is not flagged. The
"English (US) Language Pack" add-on is installed.

One interesting observation: when I go under Preferences->Language, I
see that en-us is selected as the default. When I click on Set
Alternatives, but the drop-down also shows en-gb and en-ca. I can click
on Canada and UK and remove them, and they show as removed. However,
after I restart, those two languages come back. So there appears to be
no way to actually remove those languages.

[Bug 1855164] [NEW] update-initramfs does not work on first partition of dual-boot systems

2019-12-04 Thread Timur Tabi
Public bug reported:

I installed two copies of Ubuntu 19.04 on one hard drive. The
installation itself worked fine, and I'm able to switch between the two
copies of Ubuntu via grub. Software update also works fine on both
installations.

The OSes were installed one at a time. That is, I installed Ubuntu
first on one-half of the hard drive. I then installed Ubuntu again on
the second half. To keep things simple, the first installation of
Ubuntu is called X, and the second installation is called Y.

The update-initramfs utility does not work when I run it on X. It works
fine on Y. This means that I cannot install a custom kernel on X. I
can build a custom kernel and install it via "dpkg -i", but update-
initramfs will not update the grub config files, and so my new kernel
will not appear in the grub menu, even though the files are in /boot.

All of this works fine, however, on Y.

update-initramfs does not give any errors when run on X, it just appears
to be updating the wrong files.

Can you try bringing up the interface manually, with ifconfig and a
static IP address? The driver that's already in 4.10 should work as-is.
I need to see the console output as the driver tries to bring the
interface up, and dhclient hides all that.

2017-03-30 Thread Timur Tabi
Yes, the REP has the Atheros 8033, which uses the same driver.

Re: [Bug 1677297] RE: Zesty use qcom_emac instead of msm_emac.

2017-03-29 Thread Timur Tabi
Sorry, I'm not sure what happened there. I meant to say that that is the
*actual* PHY on the SDP board. It's an Atheros 8031 PHY. I was hoping
that we could get away with the genphy driver that's built-in, but
apparently not.

Ubuntu should be building every PHY driver anyway. I don't know if
there's a way to automatically load only the PHY drivers that are on the
board. However, none of this is Centriq- or even ARM-specific. This is
standard procedure for most Ethernet drivers on any platform.

[Bug 1677297] RE: Zesty use qcom_emac instead of msm_emac.

2017-03-29 Thread Timur Tabi
It's not unrelated. That is the actusl phy on the SDP.

From: Manoj Iyer [manoj.i...@canonical.com]
Sent: Wednesday, March 29, 2017 10:11 PM
To: Timur Tabi
Cc: Manoj Iyer; Andrew Cloke; David Douglas; 1677...@bugs.launchpad.net
Subject: Re: Zesty use qcom_emac instead of msm_emac.

That is hard to SRU, we don't want to be adding unrelated modules to DI.

With at803x loaded
==
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 4.10.0-10-generic #13~ubunturc2+build.1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 28
23:33:09 UTC 2017 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ lsmod | grep at803x
at803x
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ lsmod | grep qcom
qcom_emac 40960 0
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 8c:fd:f0:06:90:cd
   inet addr:10.228.66.102 Bcast:10.228.66.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

So clearly as a side effect of loading at803x qcom_emac is able to get an
IP address. But I am afraid this is not something we can justify as an
SRU.

Also, you may need to load the at803x driver before bringing up the
interface. I've noticed in some kernels, the link doesn't come up
unless you load this driver first. I don't know why it's a requirement
only on some kernels.

You need to back-port some patches from 4.11 if you want the driver to
work. Look at our 4.10 rebase for details.

[Bug 1523704] [NEW] pidgin-sipe says messages are not delivered during group chat because it thinks no one is online

2015-12-07 Thread Timur Tabi
Public bug reported:

Whenever I'm in a group chat with other people in my company, every time
I type in a message, I get this response:

This message was not delivered to sip: because one or more
recipients are offline:

I get one of these lines for each other person in the chat, listing that
person's email address. I know the message is bogus, because everyone
else in the chat does receive my messages.

This may be the same bug as http://sourceforge.net/p/sipe/bugs/151/

However, that bug is supposedly fixed. Perhaps updating Ubuntu 14.04 to
pidgin-sipe 1.20.1 will fix this? I tried compiling 1.20.1, but it
complained about missing dependencies, and I didn't know what other
packages to install

2015-09-14 Thread Timur Tabi
What I don't understand is why the problem isn't reported by the OS.
All of these indicator applications are launched and running, and none
of them notice that indicator-applet-appmenu isn't running! When I go
to the "Panel" setting in unity-tweak-tool, how come I don't see an
error message there either? Why is there nothing in dmesg? When I
manually launch an indicator app from the command line, it doesn't
report any errors either. How is possible that all of these programs
interact with the panel, but none of them notice that it's not
there?!?!?!!?
