[Bug 916985] Re: [Xen Dom0 kernel] [32492FU, Conexant CX20585, Static instead of normal sound

2012-01-28 Thread Todd Deshane
The problem is specific to 32bit Dom0. 64bit Dom0 works perfectly.

Just as a quick note this bug still applies to:

3.2.0-11-generic-pae

I will continue to test as time allows. For now I can just use the 64
bit Dom0.

[Bug 282858] Re: Ubuntu-xen-desktop does not install a dom0 kernel

2010-01-03 Thread Todd Deshane
Official support for Xen on Ubuntu/Fedora isn't likely to be offered
until Xen dom0 support gets into mainline linux.

For updates on that effort and other alternatives for dom0 kernels to
try see:

http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/XenDom0Kernels
http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/XenParavirtOps

So, it is a bug, but the current workaround takes some manual work.
There are some very good howtos that can be found online that explain in
detail how to get various kernels working on various versions of Ubuntu.

The reason that the package is installable is that it does include the
Xen hyperviosor and tools. A warning to the users about the package not
including a dom0 kernel is a good idea.

Hope that helps.

Maybe something to do with the number of open connections being
incorrect?

[Bug 354288] Re: ssh keys for user are not owned by the user [Jaunty] [PATCH]

2009-04-03 Thread Todd Deshane
At first I tried to go the os.chown way, but there were a few
complications that made the code less elegant.

First, the chown command takes, as the 2nd and 3rd arguments, the uid
and gid of the user. The user that needs to own the .ssh directory and
its contents is a user that is created within the chroot. While it is
possible to get the information with the pwd module, it is a lot easier
to simply do the chroot and then use chown command within the chroot.

Other suggestions or code are welcome for review. I am not a developer
on this project, so it will be up to them on what they accept/commit as
a fix.

2009-04-02 Thread Todd Deshane
Public bug reported:

with the options:

--user username --ssh-user-key=

the key is copied in, but the ownership is for root, not for the user.

attached is a patch from the output of:
diff -u /usr/share/pyshared/VMBuilder/plugins/ubuntu/dapper.py.orig
/usr/share/pyshared/VMBuilder/plugins/ubuntu/dapper.py

** Affects: vm-builder (Ubuntu)

[Bug 335472] Re: device-mapper: remove ioctl failed: Device or resource busy

2009-04-02 Thread Todd Deshane
More testing another tweak to the patch provided in bug #352114

This line doesn't work (gives the errors from above)
vmbuilder kvm ubuntu --libvirt=qemu:///system --addpkg ubuntu-desktop --addpkg
openssh-server --hostname ubuntu-desktop --user username --ssh-user-key=ssh_key

But this line (without --addpkg ubuntu-desktop, but still with --addpkg
openssh-server) does work.
vmbuilder kvm ubuntu --libvirt=qemu:///system --addpkg openssh-server
--hostname ubuntu-desktop --user username --ssh-user-key=ssh_key

I will see if I can trigger it/not trigger it in any other cases.

It would be great if someone could test with the last suggested in
comment #4 in bug #352114

2009-04-01 Thread Todd Deshane
"ubuntu-vm-builder kvm jaunty" does not re-produce this.

I am getting it with a more complicated command however:
vmbuilder kvm ubuntu --libvirt=qemu:///system --addpkg ubuntu-desktop --addpkg
openssh-server --hostname ubuntu-desktop --user username --ssh-user-key=ssh_key

I'll try to reproduce and narrow down the option that is causing the
problem.

[Bug 351943] Re: ubuntu-xen-server installs, but complains that it needs Python 2.5 in Jaunty

2009-03-30 Thread Todd Deshane
There hasn't been a linux-xen kernel since 8.04, hardy. The hardy kernel
should work fine for your Xen kernel though.

The intrepid xen hypervisor was backpored to hardy see:
http://bderzhavets.wordpress.com/2008/11/13/backport-intrepid-xen-33-hypervisor-at-ubuntu-hardy-dom0-2624-21-xen/

Maybe somebody will backport the xen hypervisor, etc. that is in Jaunty.

In any case, this bug is a duplicate and will be marked as won't fix until xen
dom0 get's into mainline.

[Bug 132256] Re: [Feature request] symlinks for hvmloader and qemu-dm

2008-12-19 Thread Todd Deshane
It probably is still a problem, since Ubuntu's upstream (Debian) doesn't
(I don't think) fix it either for some reason.

Manually making the symlinks or having the tools just be smart enough to
handle it is acceptable for most people anyway. That is why it was
considered a feature request and not a real bug.

[Bug 282858] Re: Ubuntu-xen-desktop does not install a dom0 kernel

2008-10-13 Thread Todd Deshane
This is not a bug, it is expected. A dom0 kernel is not included in 8.10
(intrepid). I would expect that the hardy dom0 should work, but haven't
personally tested it. You could also consider the dom0 kernel from
xen.org, debian, or opensuse.

Xen dom0 support on ubuntu should be back once xen dom0 support is in
mainline Linux, this is expect in 2.6.28 or so.

Fedora is doing the same thing with dom0 support. opensuse and now
debian unstable have recent forward-ported kernels.

[Bug 211726] Re: losetup fails when using the 'file:/', preventing the DomU from being created

@Patrick

I was looking into your theory about the losetup twice.

I am trying to compare vs. the current block file in xen-unstable:
http://xenbits.xensource.com/xen-unstable.hg?file/78a29cf8476b/tools/examples/block

I am not so sure that that is the problem. Can you take a closer look?

Would it be possible for you to produce a working and tested patch that
we could try?

[Bug 225046] Re: System freezes with xen kernel after loading DRM

2008-07-24 Thread Todd Deshane
I just did an dist-upgrade to intrepid and Xen + X now works!

One thing to watch out for is, at least for me, the upgrade uninstalled
bridge-utils.

Also: Interpid looks kinda neat :)

All the colors are different. If you are having this bug on a non-
production system, upgrade to a interpid release, it is quite an
experience. Just when I thought Ubuntu had stopped impressing me, they
go and make things even better :)

I'll re-emphasize that the problem is not in all X programs, it seems to
be limited to GNOME ones,

xterm, xclock seem to be fine.

CTRL+C is still the only workaround

[Bug 221457] Re: apache2 crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-07-22 Thread Todd Deshane
During my 7.10 to 8.04 upgrade, in the gnome-terminal I get the
following message (since I ran update-manager from the terminal)

extracting '/tmp/tmpkC8cub/hardy.tar.gz'
authenticate '/tmp/tmpkC8cub/hardy.tar.gz' against
'/tmp/tmpkC8cub/hardy.tar.gz.gpg'

This caused the upgrade to hang trying to configure/generate locales

Generating locales...
  en_AU.UTF-8...

This then leads to the bug that dpkg -configure -a must be then run from
the command line to re-configure the unconfigured packages. update-
manager on next load, doesn't alert of the problem. I am pretty sure
though that I saw discussion that that sort of thing was to be fixed
either in or slightly after the hardy release.

[Bug 236824] Re: xen-utils-3.2 adding sHype

2008-06-02 Thread Todd Deshane
Do any distros ship with sHype on by default? (Fedora for example?)

I wonder if debian would also be interested in providing a sHype-enabled
version? Then ubuntu could just pull this from upstream.

I suggest finding out the answers to the questions above and getting the
discussions going.

If the above fall through, maybe somebody would be willing to host a PPA

[Bug 205450] Re: xend fails to connect guest to dom0 block device or loopback file

2008-05-19 Thread Todd Deshane
another workaround:

//understand losetup -f and -a
$ sudo losetup -f
$ sudo losetup -a

//actually do the mount and check that it worked and which device it picked
$ sudo  losetup `sudo losetup -f`
$ sudo losetup -a

//then use phy:/dev/loop in your xen config file

I wouldn't recommend this for disk partition, use tap:aio: instead.

But for cdrom image files, it is a good workaround.

Also, remember that file: is deprecated due to the problems with loopback
devices
which is what this workaround uses, which is why you should only use it for iso
(read-only) files.

2008-04-21 Thread Todd Deshane
I don't the file:/ is a high priority. I am surprised that it doesn't
work, I bet it is just a module not loading or something similar.

deti: Did you notice that in the network bug that someone posted a patch
and some links to custom packages, you might want to try those.

I am also using AMD64

[Bug 205450] Re: xend fails to connect guest to dom0 block device or loopback file

2008-04-04 Thread Todd Deshane
It is actually fixed for me, but with the workarounds listed above:

sda --> hda

file:/ --> tap:aio/

a way to get the console:

  adding extra='xencons=tty' to domU config

  OR

adding xvc0 to /etc/inittab in domU file system

The bugs above could be fixed by fixing xen-tools and/or are different separate
bugs.

So, the bug as filed has basically been fixed and has workarounds for
things that are broken otherwise

[Bug 204010] Re: networking not working

2008-04-03 Thread Todd Deshane
I tried the ethtool command on domU. didn't work for me.

also tried to put the card in promisc with ifconfig eth0 promisc on the
guest.

I am in #xen in oftc trying to get some ideas, i will hang out in both
##xen and #xen like i said before.

I was told that it is the frontend driver in domU, which is not news. We
need a way to be able to either fix that driver and/or get some more
visibility so we can get someone to fix it.

2008-03-31 Thread Todd Deshane
Mark: Interesting point you bring up, I hadn't thought of that. DomU
support should be in mainline Linux, although dom0 support is still
lacking until Red Hat finishes their port.

Would you be willing to bring some of the key points and information to
the xen-users list [1] for a broader audience and get some ideas on
debugging it?

Also, has anybody tried this 32-bit? And is it a problem with both 32
bit and 64 bit?

It is also interesting that a 2.6.22-14-xen Ubuntu xen kernel has been
reported to work.

[Bug 207774] Re: Kernel oops while localedef runs via debootstrap

2008-03-27 Thread Todd Deshane
Do you have or can you make the scripts and templates publicly available
so that they can be tested directly?

To me it looks like an LVM or ext3 problem... hard to say at this point.

One thing that I noticed in my testing of LVM during hardy alphas was
that the LVM volume names in /dev//* are not available after a
reboot. Maybe there is a bug with the hardy kernel or LVM packages?

LVM isn't well tested on the desktop, probably only on servers, so some
subtle bug like that might linger longer since it is not a common path

[Bug 204010] Re: networking not working

2008-03-26 Thread Todd Deshane
Did anyone try making a manual bridge. For example adding something like
the following to /etc/network/interfaces

auto br0
iface br0 inet static
  address 192.168.133.7
  netmask 255.255.255.0
  broadcast 192.168.133.0
  bridge_ports eth0
  bridge_fd 9
  bridge_hello 2
  bridge_maxage 12
  bridge_stp off

Then in the guest config make sure you have bridge=br0 in the vif
parameter:

e.g. vif=['mac=xx:xx:xx:xx,bridge=br0']

[Bug 205450] Re: xend fails to connect guest to dom0 block device or loopback file

2008-03-23 Thread Todd Deshane
My best guess is that it is a problem with the xen initrd
(/boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-12-xen).

It seems to be only loading the fuse module and not the SCSI modules or
any of the xen modules.

The following are loaded by xend:
blktap
blkbk
xenblk
netloop
netbk

Do any of these and possible also SCSI modules need to be explicitly in
the initrd too?

I tried adding the following to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and then
running update-initramfs -u

sd_mod
scsi_mod
blktap
blkbk
xenblk
netloop
netbk

The following similar thing happens:

I still think it might have to do with the initrd, but not sure what exactly.
Building from source did work, but it would be better to be able to use the
ubuntu packages.

[Bug 205450] Re: xend fails to connect guest to dom0 block device or loopback file

2008-03-23 Thread Todd Deshane
I can confirm this behavior.

I think that it is *also* a bug with xen-tools since it should use
tap:aio by default instead of file:/

changing to tap:aio lets the guest boot, but brings me back to this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xen-3.2/+bug/144631

** Changed in: xen-3.2 (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Confirmed

** Also affects: xen-tools (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

[Bug 93734] Re: disable compiz when disabling nvidia

2008-03-23 Thread Todd Deshane
Could this fix also be applied to the ati side of things?

I am running the latest packages after an install of hardy beta and ran
into the white screen when going from the fglrx back to the default ati
or radeon driver.

The gconf key setting (from the "proposed Xsession.d script" above) back
to metacity works fine and should just have a flag for the ati/radeon
driver I think. Does that sound right?

[Bug 205450] Re: xend fails to connect guest to dom0 block device or loopback file

2008-03-23 Thread Todd Deshane
Did you try tap:aio instead of file: in the guest config file?

Also, there have been a number of problems fixed, but a couple lingering
issues with the latest packages.

see:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xen-3.2

also, make sure that the modules (loaded by /etc/init.d/xend are being loaded
properly)
for some reference see:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xen-3.2/+bug/199533

[Bug 201707] Re: System very unstable under Xen

2008-03-19 Thread Todd Deshane
I recall some discussion on the xen mailing lists on the sw-iommu stuff.

SamBashton: Can you take a look here and see if similar bugs/problems
have been reported and if fixes and/or workaround are mentioned.

see:
http://xen.markmail.org/search/?q=sw-iommu

[Bug 199533] Re: Device 0 (vif) could not be connected. Hotplug scripts not working.

2008-03-19 Thread Todd Deshane
Clemens, MaurĂcio: I don't have suggestions for you at this point as I
may be running into a different problem.

You both might consider giving adequate information to the xen-users
list and see if you get any suggestions.

I will try to report back if I find out anything that can help you.

2008-03-18 Thread Todd Deshane
MaurĂcio: Thanks for the suggestion, but it still doesn't work for me
:(

I added a comment to bug # 144631.

Further ideas/fixes should go there as this bug has been accurately
marked fix released.

The root file system hang bug is the one that still (at least sometimes)
exists.
