[Bug 957015] Re: contacts undefined, undefined

2018-07-02 Thread Tom Fogal
This was forever ago. I think Ubuntu One is all-but dead now anyway,
no?

In any case, I stopped using U1 years ago and so can neither confirm nor
deny this anymore. I suggest we just close it as a will not fix or
needs verification.

[Bug 1259492] [NEW] print jobs sit in queue after successful printing for an extended period of time, blocking other jobs.

2013-12-10 Thread Tom Fogal
Public bug reported:

When I print something using:

  lpr -P hp-500 -o sides=two-sided-long-edge ...

it prints immediately, as expected. However, the job stays in the queue
(as determined by 'lpstat -t' ) for an extended period of time. Until
today, I thought it stayed there forever. Normally when I print
multiple things, I queue up all of them with 'lpr', and then iterate
between the printer and a terminal, using 'cancel' to remove jobs from
the queue which were successfully printed. This workaround allows me to
print multiple documents.

I printed a single job yesterday and did not clear the queue, however.
Today I noticed the queue was empty. So I guess it will *eventually*
empty, but the notification between job physically completing and the
queue noticing is at least a few minutes, and thus I never noticed
before.

Potentially of note is that I saw a bunch of:

[2824904.541816] type=1400 audit(1386659294.377:244): apparmor=STATUS
operation=profile_replace parent=5999 profile=unconfined
name=/usr/sbin/cupsd pid=6003 comm=apparmor_parser

lines in my 'dmesg' output this morning.

I apologize, but I no longer have access to this hardware. It appears
both @vanvugt and @jaraco can reproduce, though; maybe one of you could
help with the testing, here?

[Bug 1085140] Re: spotify, rhythmbox, flash freezes randomly

2013-06-25 Thread Tom Fogal
I recently upgraded to Raring (from 12.10) and am now seeing spotify
freeze often. I unfortunately never use rhythmbox or flash, so I cannot
verify if those have issues as well.

I see:

08:03:47.719 E [watchdog.cpp:179] Fatal deadlock
detected - would have crashed!! (Thread: gui)

in my console when this occurs. This message repeats every second; I
came in this morning to a terminal that filled its entire scrollback
buffer with messages like these.

I attached gdb and tried to figure out what the threads were doing:

[Bug 1033679] [NEW] some boost libraries need recompilation with -fPIC on amd64

2012-08-06 Thread Tom Fogal
Public bug reported:

Output from some of our software compiling here:

/usr/bin/ld:
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.6/../../../../lib/libboost_filesystem-mt.a(operations.o):

Boost was added to the project via the following code in a
cmakelists.txt:

  FIND_PACKAGE(Boost 1.46.0

I also had this problem with 'regex', removed it from the cmakelists.txt
just to see what would happen, and hit the same thing with filesystem.
The full command that produced the above error was:

[Bug 32042] Re: OpenGL subroutine man pages missing

2012-04-03 Thread Tom Fogal
I feel this bug is miscategorized. These man pages should not come from
Mesa, for two reasons:

. not all systems use Mesa; some systems utilize the proprietary drivers, and
they should be able to install these manpages as well.
. Mesa is not the 'upstream' for these manpages, even if they happen to
include the documents. The standards development group in this case is Khronos.
Khronos provides a method to create these manapges.

Thus I think this should be a new, separate package which is sourced
from the Khronos documentation. Their subversion repository is:

https://cvs.khronos.org/svn/repos/ogl/trunk/ecosystem/public/sdk/docs/man

and their manpages can be generated using 'docbook2x-man -N' on each XML
file.

The Khronos documents are (mostly) considered BSD-licensed:

http://www.opengl.org/wiki/Getting_started/XML_Toolchain_and_Man_Pages#Licenses

I checked this myself, however. They are actually licensed under one of
either the SGI Free Software B license, or the Open Publication License:

  $ grep -i license *.xml |  cut -d: -f2 | sort | uniq
Free Software B License. For details, see
Free Software B License. For details, see
Silicon Graphics, Inc. This document is licensed under the SGI
Silicon Graphics, Inc. This document is licensed under the SGI
the Open Publication License, v 1.0, 8 June 1999.
the Open Publication License, v 1.0, 8 June 1999.

The former allows basically free use as long as you don't advertise with SGI
[1]. The latter is considered a viable Free Documentation License [2], [3]
[1] http://oss.sgi.com/projects/FreeB/
[2] http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#RealOPL
[3] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Publication_License

So there appears to be no issue in distributing derivative works.

[Bug 957015] [NEW] contacts undefined, undefined

2012-03-16 Thread Tom Fogal
Public bug reported:

I am using thunderbird and Ubuntu One on Ubuntu 11.10.

I utilized the thunderbird address book to drag some of my contacts into
the 'Ubuntu One' group / list / whatnot. After syncing, all of my
contacts first and last names were set to undefined! The thunderbird
address book apparently only has a read-only view of the contact data,
so I was not able to update it there. As such, I let things be for a
while, perhaps a few weeks, as it was only a minor annoyance.

About a week ago, I logged into the Ubuntu One website and (manually)
fixed most of my contacts. However, it appears that contacts will not
*update* in the thunderbird address book; perhaps they can only be
added? All of my contacts are still undefined locally, unless of
course I also have them in a separate, unsynched group/list.

The U1 service seems to be working correctly in general, as I have
synchronized many files between my office workstation and home laptop
during this time.

[Bug 912124] [NEW] gnome-terminal starts but is never visible

2012-01-04 Thread Tom Fogal
Public bug reported:

I've just upgraded to oneiric. This is probably my first time trying
Unity.

Starting a terminal creates no apparent window. However, a terminal is
created (somewhere) and my focus is shifted to it. If I start a
terminal and then type in xclock, for example, despite not seeing that
appear anywhere, an xclock instance will start up. I can even kill the
xclock program with ctrl-c, so the terminal appears to be active.
Typing exit removes the little white triangles next to the terminal
application, so it must be ending the process then, too.

I tried launching an xterm and running 'gnome-terminal' from within
that, and I get the same results.

[Bug 903374] Re: cannot upgrade to 11.10

2012-01-03 Thread Tom Fogal
I think I had xorg-edgers on the system at one point or another, but no
more as far as I can tell.

I just double-checked and found an xorg-edgers entry in
/etc/apt/sources.list.save but not sources.list. I deleted it from all
those entries and ran an 'apt-get update'.

'do-release-upgrade' still mentions that some third party sources were
disabled.. *which* third sources, though? The only sources I have in
/etc/apt/sources.list are from ubuntu.com and canonical.com addresses.

And, of course, the upgrade still fails with the same error message.

[Bug 758660] [NEW] nvidia dev package[s] are missing provides for libgl-dev

2011-04-12 Thread Tom Fogal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-185-dev

The nvidia packages appear to be missing Provides: libgl-dev. This
causes any packages that needs an OpenGL development environment to
think that mesa is the only option to provide such a thing.

So, for example, one can install the nvidia drivers, and then try to
install qt4-dev-tools, and apt-get will force-install libgl1-mesa-dev.
The end result is a /usr/lib/libGL.so that points at a Mesa library,

[Bug 746174] [NEW] screen corruption with quiet splash on macbook air (nvidia 320M)

2011-03-30 Thread Tom Fogal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I just got a Macbook Air and tried to install Ubuntu on it. Booting up
the main install disk resulted in some crazy screen corruption, and the
left inch and a half or so was completely useless, since it did not
appear to update other than randomly moving bits (described below).

It is hard to describe. It looked as if I had a normal desktop, but
overlayed on top of it was a series of 3cm vertical 'bands'. There was
a staircasing effect between bands, as a small horizontal line connected
them but fell between successive bands. On top of all this, pixels
seemed to 'move' awkwardly, like they were dancing around after too many
beers. If I had to guess, I would say my video card and display device
disagreed on the resolution, and on top of that somebody Snow Crashed my
desktop.

Switching back to the console via ctrl-alt-f1 does not fix the problem;
my console was messed up in similar ways, though it looks more like just
plain Snow Crash then. There was no color in the console, of course, so
I guess it just must be hard to see any banding artifacts, even if they
are still there.

I guess is the wrong place to mention it, but as a side note: the xorg
folks semi-recently made DontZap the default, i.e. disabled ctrl-alt-
backspace. Please make it the default on Ubuntu, it's a real pain to
debug this kind of thing when you can't kill X.

The fix is simple: remove quiet splash from the grub boot lines.
Everything works then -- with both the nvidia proprietary drivers and
nouveau.

It might be important to note that my screen seemed fine until X started
up, so it seems to be some poor interaction between the splash screen (I
guess) and X's KMS?

This is 10.10, maverick. I didn't try an update after installing from
the CD, because it was too difficult to see what I was typing.
