[Bug 965017] Re: New SFTP backend uses outdated paramiko, breaks connection to server even with --use-scp

Would it be possible to have 0.6.19 in backports? I have been
successfully running 0.6.19-0ubuntu1 from quantal on 12.04 for some time
now.

[Bug 965017] Re: New SFTP backend uses outdated paramiko, breaks connection to server even with --use-scp

2012-05-09 Thread Tom Helner
@gcc Yes my backup servers are in my known_hosts with the same user.

This definitely seems to be version related:
- duplicity 0.6.18-0ubuntu3 12.04 client can successfully backup to Debian 6
server
- duplicity 0.6.18-0ubuntu3 12.04 client fails on backup to Ubuntu 12.04 server
- downgrade to duplicity 0.6.15-0ubuntu2 from 11.10 on 12.04 client can now
successfully backup to 12.04 server

And ssh keys work fine:
ssh @ ls -d /home/duplicity/kanpai_backup
/home/duplicity/kanpai_backup

ssh @ ls -d /home/duplicity/kanpai_backup
/home/duplicity/kanpai_backup

2012-04-30 Thread Tom Helner
I am seeing the same behavior on a Ubuntu 12.04 client (duplicity
0.6.18-0ubuntu3 & python-paramiko 1.7.7.1-2) when attempting to connect to
Ubuntu 12.04 server (openssh-server 1:5.9p1-5ubuntu1):
BackendException: ssh connection to 141.215.10.33:22 failed: Unknown server
141.215.10.33

But it works fine when connecting to a Debian 6 server (openssh-server
1:5.5p1-6+squeeze1)

[Bug 659817] Re: NetworkManage does not set domain in /etc/hosts on DHCP connections

2010-12-02 Thread Tom Helner
Do you know where NetworkManager is pulling it's FQDN info from if it is
not getting it from DHCP?

The behavior I noticed pre 10.04, is whatever domain the machine gets on
install (either assigned by DHCP or manually during install) is the one
that NetworkManager uses no mater what network you connect to. Although
I cannot find anywhere that this is set on the system. This is from
memory and I have not specifically tested for it, so I might not be 100%
correct here.

For example machines I build at work get work's domain set by DHCP, and
when I bring them home their FQDN does not change.

I don't know how NetworkManager is designed to handle this situation.
But I do know, in my case if NetworkManager changes the FQDN between
home and work this will cause issues w/ Duplicity backup. That said, if
NM is expected to change the FQDN to the network it is on, then I can
put in place workarounds to get Duplicity backup working again.

[Bug 295266] Re: KDE doesn't honor root certs chosen by ca-certificates

2010-06-23 Thread Tom Helner
Here is another workaround solution that can be leveraged until KDE gets
this fixed (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162485), or maybe if
they fix it judging by how long the bug report has been open.

My new SSL cert for uses a chained certificate, and was loading with an
authenticity check warning because "Entrust.net Certification Authority
(2048)" was not included in KDE's ca-bundle.crt. And to add insult to
injury KDE no longer has a GUI to import CA Certificates.

Simply appending the Entrust.net_Premium_2048_Secure_Server_CA.crt
(already installed from the "ca-certificates" package) to KDE's ca-
bundle.crt then restarting KDE fixed this issue for both konqueror and
kmail.

$ sudo cp -p /usr/share/kde4/apps/kssl/ca-bundle.crt
/usr/share/kde4/apps/kssl/ca-bundle.crt.orig
$ sudo cat
/usr/share/ca-certificates/mozilla/Entrust.net_Premium_2048_Secure_Server_CA.crt
 >> /usr/share/kde4/apps/kssl/ca-bundle.crt
Restart KDE

[Bug 579732] Re: package mysql-cluster-server-5.1 7.0.9-1ubuntu7 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2010-05-26 Thread Tom Helner
Ok I now have a work-around procedure that seems to work for me.

1. On fresh install of 10.04 create /etc/mysql/ and add debian-start file
(extracted from mysql-server-5.1 package).
   - If this step is skipped the configuration of the mysql-cluster-server-5.1
will hang.

2. Install mysql-cluster-server-5.1
 # aptitude install mysql-cluster-server-5.1
   - This will error out w/ the following error:
  select user,password,host from mysql.user;
  b. Delete incomplete entries
 mysql> DROP USER ''@'localhost';
 mysql> DROP USER ''@'db3';
  c. Create debian-sys-maint user
 mysql> GRANT SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, DROP, RELOAD,
SHUTDOWN, PROCESS, FILE, REFERENCES, INDEX, ALTER, SHOW DATABASES, SUPER,
CREATE TEMPORARY TABLES, LOCK TABLES, EXECUTE, REPLICATION SLAVE, REPLICATION
CLIENT ON *.* TO 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' WITH GRANT OPTION;
  d. Set passwords for root & debian-sys-maint users (for debian-sys-maint use
the password listed in /etc/mysql/debian.cnf)
 mysql> UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('NEW-PASSWORD') WHERE
user='debian-sys-maint';
 mysql> UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('NEW-PASSWORD') WHERE
user='root';
 mysql> FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
4. Test that debian-sys-maint user is working
 # mysql -u debian-sys-maint -pNEW-PASSWORD
5. Restart of database should now work without errors
 # /etc/init.d/mysql restart

2010-05-25 Thread Tom Helner
There appears to be more wrong than the missing "debian-start" file. Using a
fresh install of 10.04 I created the /etc/mysql/debian-start file before
installing the mysql-cluster-server package. This time the install got a little
further, but still failed:
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost'
(using password: YES)

Looking at the database I see that the debian-sys-maint is not getting set up,
and the root password is not being set:

[Bug 579732] Re: package mysql-cluster-server-5.1 7.0.9-1ubuntu7 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2010-05-24 Thread Tom Helner
I have run into this same issue with a fresh install of mysql-cluster-
server-5.1 on 10.04 LTS.

The init scrip complained that the /etc/mysql/debian-start script was missing:
Setting up mysql-cluster-server-5.1 (7.0.9-1ubuntu7) ...
 * Stopping MySQL database server mysqld
   ...done.
 * Starting MySQL database server mysqld
   ...done.
/etc/init.d/mysql: line 116: /etc/mysql/debian-start: No such file or directory
invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action "start" failed.

For some reason /etc/mysql/debian-start is only in mysql-server-5.1, and
not in mysql-cluster-server-5.1. So I extracted and "installed" that
file from mysql-server-5.1, and attempted to reconfigure the package
(dpkg-reconfigure -p low mysql-cluster-server-5.1" It prompts me for a
new root database password, then on the next screen I get:

ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'debian-sys-

[Bug 553557] Re: kde power button configuration ignored

2010-05-05 Thread Tom Helner
Since my upgrade to 10.04 I am seeing the exact behavior as Tom
describes above.

This line in /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh fails for me because "pidof kded4" is
returning 2 PIDs (one is defunct, also new since upgrade):

( test "$XUSER" != "" && test -x /usr/bin/qdbus && test -r
/proc/$(pidof kded4)/environ && su - $XUSER -c "eval $(echo -n 'export
'; cat /proc/$(pidof kded4)/environ |tr '\0' '\n'|grep
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS); qdbus org.kde.kded" | grep -q powerdevil) ;
then

Which causes "/sbin/shutdown -h now "Power button pressed"" to be run.

As Tom describes, changing powerbtn.sh to use the following works for me:
PIDOFKDE4=`ps -efww|grep kded4|grep $XUSER|grep -v grep|grep -v defunct|tr -s '
'|awk '{print $2}'`

[Bug 508073] Re: pressing power button in kde shuts down computer immediately

2010-05-05 Thread Tom Helner
I am still experiencing this symptom on a fully up to date (acpid
1.0.10-5ubuntu2.1) Lucid upgrade.

What's happening is the following line in /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh is
failing because "pidof kded4" is returning 2 PIDs:

( test "$XUSER" != "" && test -x /usr/bin/qdbus && test -r
/proc/$(pidof kded4)/environ && su - $XUSER -c "eval $(echo -n 'export
'; cat /proc/$(pidof kded4)/environ |tr '\0' '\n'|grep
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS); qdbus org.kde.kded" | grep -q powerdevil) ;
then

This is not a regression in acpid 1.0.10-5ubuntu2.1. The test line in
powerbtn.sh in both 1.0.10-5ubuntu2 & 1.0.10-5ubuntu2.1 are identical.
This actually might be a symptom of another problem that I have not been
able to fix yet. The reason I am getting 2 PIDs for kded4 is because 1
is defunct.

I am wondering if there is a better way to detect if KDE4 is running
that is more robust than "pidof kded4". Pre-Lucid, Ubuntu was using
"pidof ksmserver". I have also seen "ps -efww|grep kded4|grep
$XUSER|grep -v grep|grep -v defunct" being suggested.

I can confirm that my fresh install of 9.10 also has this issue.

Changing "sys.exit(True)" to "sys.exit(False)" in the section discussed

That said, I don't know enough about this script, and have have not had
the time to research it to know if this actually fixes the problem or
simply fixes a symptom.

[Bug 268734] Re: immediate shutdown after pressing shutdown button

2009-01-29 Thread Tom Helner
Darwin's patch solves the immediate shutdown issue on my system (8.10 w/
KDE 4.2). Its still not 100% because /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh trumps my
powerdevil settings.

Currently /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh looks to see if gnome-power-manager,
kpowersave or klaptopdaemon are running to let those programs handle
this policy. I would suggest that the powerdevil daemon be added to this
list in preparation for 9.04 and KDE 4.2 where powerdevil will be the
default power manager.

[Bug 84313] Re: network-manager not deleting resolvconf information on resume from suspend

2008-05-01 Thread Tom Helner
I was having this same behavior in Hardy, and preforming the same
workaround.

I had resolvconf installed because the vpnc package recommends it be installed.
I have since uninstalled resolvconf and installed network-manager-vpnc and the
problem disappeared.

Attached is my syslog output covering
 - resuming from suspend to RAM
 - NetworkManager connecting to wireless
 - Preforming the workaround:

- Reconnect to network w/ KNetworkManager

[Bug 223263] Re: Upgrading to Hardy Trashes Network Settings

I have seen this "grayed out Network Manager" issue on a few Hardy systems.
In every case there was an interface other than loopback configured in
/etc/network/interfaces.

Please verify that your /etc/network/interfaces file looks like this:
-
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface

[Bug 217550] Re: Receive kio_media_mounthelper error when removing usb device

2008-04-29 Thread Tom Helner
Looking at a Gutsy system I found what has changed. On gutsy udev would
assign group rights of "plugdev" to USB portable storage, and Hardy is
assigning "disk".

It looks like the following line in /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules is
the culprit:
ATTRS{type}=="0", GROUP="disk"
This line is new in Hardy. After commenting it out I now get the expected
permissions:

brw-rw 1 root plugdev 8, 16 2008-04-29 11:06 /dev/sdb
brw-rw 1 root plugdev 8, 17 2008-04-29 11:06 /dev/sdb1

[Bug 217550] Re: Receive kio_media_mounthelper error when removing usb device

2008-04-28 Thread Tom Helner
This is still an issue for the official release of hardy. Adding the
users to the disk group does stop the error, but this feels like a work
around.

The "safely remove" option worked fine in Feisty and Gutsy without
having users in the disk group. Also If I remember correctly it worked
fine on Hardy when I first installed beta 3, at some point in the beta
cycle it broke.

[Bug 205805] Re: Kubuntu 8.04 Beta Amarok/iPod & System Settings possible bugs

2008-04-10 Thread Tom Helner
I was seeing very similar behavior on a 8.04 Hardy Kubuntu beta install
and my 1GB shuffle, until this morning when Amarok was updated to 1.4.9.

Amarok 1.4.8 would not auto mount the ipod. I would have to manually
mount it then "connect" it in Amarok. "Disconnect" from within Amarok
worked perfectly to unmount the device. My difference was I never had
any issues w/ Amarok hanging, it simply didn't auto-mount.

But now w/ 1.4.9, Amarok will not connect at all, I can mount the ipod
manually, and click "connect" in Amarok and nothing happens, I am
currently looking for a bug relating to it.

Your KControl "Disks & Filesystems" issue sounds like this bug:

[Bug 124856] Re: "Disk&Filesystems" module does not load after plugging in iPod

2008-04-10 Thread Tom Helner

I am wondering if the issue that I have been having w/ Amarok not auto mounting
the Shuffle is at all related to this. Before the Amarok 1.4.9 update (last
last night) I could mount the ipod manually then "connect" it in Amarok. But
now w/ 1.4.9, Amarok will not connect at all, I am sure that this new 1.4.9
