[Bug 364156] Re: powernow-k8: BIOS does not provide ACPI -PSS objects in a way that Linux understands
I see this problem on all 6 AMD machines I work with on a regular basis. CPU frequency scaling is disabled. Most of these machines have the log message [Firmware Bug]: powernow-k8: No compatible ACPI _PSS objects found. These machines are configured with motherboards from various vendors using various AMD / NVIDIA chipsets. The common factor is the K8 / K10 cpu architecture and the Linux kernel (2.6.28 and .31 possibly earlier as well). The problem is most acute on the recently released IBM thinkpad edge notebook which boots both Window7 and Ubuntu 10.04. In windows it appears to run at a much lower temperature. Based on this observation I assume frequency scaling is working in Windows so it is hard to understand how the lack of frequency scaling in Ubuntu could be a BIOS bug. Given the pervasiveness of the problem in Linux and the observation that Windows seems to scale CPU frequency, isn't this problem more likely to be a Linux kernel issue. Or does windows somehow workaround the BIOS bug. If so perhaps there is workaround that could be applied in the linux kernel. more attachments to follow ** Attachment added: acpidump.txt http://launchpadlibrarian.net/38553264/acpidump.txt -- powernow-k8: BIOS does not provide ACPI -PSS objects in a way that Linux understands https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/364156 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I filed a bug to report this problem which was marked as a duplicate of this bug. I see this problem on 2 64bit installations of karmic. Can I use the package sited above? [Bug 346425] Re: Kubuntu install fails to detect software (fake) Intel Matrix RAID0 SSD volume on Alienware M17 laptop
Thanks for the tips, Tormod Volden and danwood76. On Alpha 2or3 (can't recall which release) I was able to boot from the live CD, load Ubiquity which would correctly detect my RAID0 volume, I could then create partitions on the RAID0 volume (ext4,swap) and install the OS. This procedure would crash at the very end of installation while installing GRUB (I don't recall any indication of version) On Alpha 5, I am able to boot from the live CD, load Ubiquity which does *not* detect my RAID0 volume. Instead it detects 2 separate volumes. Since I'd like to avoid nuking the windows 7 install I have on this RAID0 volume until after I confirm I can run Ubuntu, i have not proceeded beyond that point with Ubiquity. On Alpha 5, the alternative install *is* able to detect the RAID0 volume and I am able to create partitions and install the OS but the installer fails to install GRUB (it looks like GRUB2 is the only option). I then tried LILO which also failed. I will now try Alpha5 Ubiquity with Tormod tip to run Ubiquity on Alpha5 and danwodd76's tip to install grub1. -- Kubuntu install fails to detect software (fake) Intel Matrix RAID0 SSD volume on Alienware M17 laptop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/346425 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The alternate CD failed to install the GRUB (I think it tried to install GRUB2 but don't recall now) I also tried the LILO option but that ask several questions that I was sure how to answer and ultimately failed. Perhaps there is a way to use the Windows7 bootloader I already have installed? I think I'll give ubiquity a try with Alpha 5. If GRUB2 does not work with DMRAID which bootloader should I be using? I believe it does exist in the 9.04 release, but appears to be fixed in karmic. [Bug 379831] Re: ata2 exception EMask delays/prevents booting 9.04 8.10
Is this the right place to file this problem? Extracting part of the dmesg log file... You can see that the ATA logic appears to report lost interrupts during DMA operation which causes it to sequentially try slower DMA modes until it finally arrives at a PIO mode that works. This process appears to take approximately 40 seconds (boot time feels much longer). After looking at this further, it is not clear to me that this is the same cause as the one which created this bug but merely the similar log dump text (exception Emask) and certainly the same symptom (delayed booting) Perhaps forcing the device connected to ata7 to PIO from the start would work around this problem? Perhaps this can be configured in the bios. I will experiment this weekend. [ 22.780016] ata7: lost interrupt (Status 0x7f) [ 22.784002] ata7: drained 32768 bytes to clear DRQ. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: dmraid The machine came from Alienware with a RAID0 SSD partition formated with NTFS for Vista. I would like to dual boot Kubuntu 9.04. 1. I first tried booting from the alternate CD. The installer detected the RAID0 volume as 2 separate disks. 2. I then tried directly installing from the live CD. Same result. 3. I canceled the install from the live CD to boot to the Kubuntu desktop. 4. I launched a konsole window and typed: ubu...@ubuntu:~$ ls -la /dev/mapper total 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 160 2009-03-21 16:10 . drwxr-xr-x 16 root root4500 2009-03-21 16:10 .. crw-rw 1 root root 10, 61 2009-03-21 11:27 control ubu...@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get update ubu...@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install dmraid I believe this message appeard in /var/log/syslog at this point Mar 21 16:10:46 ubuntu dmraid-activate: ERROR: Cannot retrieve RAID set information for isw_bdhiijife_Volume0 but may have appeared at a later point (see below) ubu...@ubuntu:~$ ls -la /dev/mapper total 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 160 2009-03-21 16:10 . drwxr-xr-x 16 root root4500 2009-03-21 16:10 .. crw-rw 1 root root 10, 61 2009-03-21 11:27 control brw-rw 1 root disk 252, 0 2009-03-21 16:10 isw_bdhiijife_Volume0 brw-rw 1 root disk 252, 1 2009-03-21 16:10 isw_bdhiijife_Volume01 brw-rw 1 root disk 252, 2 2009-03-21 16:10 isw_bdhiijife_Volume02 brw-rw 1 root disk 252, 3 2009-03-21 16:10 isw_bdhiijife_Volume03 brw-rw 1 root disk 252, 4 2009-03-21 16:10 isw_bdhiijife_Volume04 If I install gparted at this point I am able to detect the RAID0 volume and add an ext4 and swap partition 5. However when I then ran the ubiquity installer as I switch to the partition manager page Ubiquity posed a Partman Crashed dialog with this message: Partman failed with exit code 141. Clarification of what I wrote earlier I should add that the reason I am using hibernate is because when I suspend to ram I can *not* find a way to wake the system back up (that is another bug) If there is anything I can do to help debug this please let me know. -- [HP Compaq nc4010] suspend/resume problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332764 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I also noticed an error message during hibernation just before the system turns off. Is there a log where this message would be written so I can provide the exact message. -- [HP Compaq nc4010] suspend/resume problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332764 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 332764] Re: [HP Compaq nc4010] suspend/resume problem
Hello, I'm not sure if Hibernate ever worked on this machine. I install 9.04 about one month ago and I think it may have originally worked back when I first installed alpha 3. I think I noticed the problem about a week or two ago then I just nuked my system and reinstalled alpha 4 from scratch and noticed that the hibernate problem persisted. It is very reproducible. I don't think it started as a result of locking up the system. I should add that the reason I am using hibernate is because when I suspend to ram I can find a way to wake the system back up (that is another bug) I'll try the experiment that you suggest below and report back On 02/23/2009 05:18 AM, Andy Whitcroft wrote: Could you please let us know the type of machine this is (make and model). Did you recently have a hibernate failure, this could have been some time before the report was triggered and offered to you. If you did, did the machine break while going to sleep, or while coming back from sleep? Is this reproducible say over 10 cycles. Has hibernate ever worked in the past, if so which kernel release (cat /proc/version_signature)? Please include any information as to the circumstances leading up to this failure, for example did your battery run out? Did the machine lock up, did any messages come out? If it is reproducible could you try the hibernate from VT1, press ctrl-alt-F1, login, and run pm-hibernate there. If you could test and report back here that would be helpful. ** Summary changed: - suspend/resume problem + [HP Compaq nc4010] suspend/resume problem ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- [HP Compaq nc4010] suspend/resume problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332764 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I tried * press ctrl-alt-F1, * login, * and run pm-hibernate the system went into hibernation state without a problem but hung when I tried to restore the system after hibernation. [Bug 332764] [NEW] suspend/resume problem
Public bug reported: the system posed a dialog indicating a detected but I'm not sure exactly what was wrong. I have noticed that a process called console-kit-daemon seems to consume a great deal of CPU time. I think this only happens after a resuming from hibernation. [Bug 328917] Re: GCompris core dumps at load time in kubuntu jaunty jackalope (alpha 3)
Yes that sounds like the right solution. I didn't realize I was using an experimental release of GCompris. Re: [Bug 328917] Re: GCompris core dumps at load time in kubuntu jaunty jackalope (alpha 3)
Hi Bruno, Sorry for the misunderstanding. I just wanted to be sure that I'm reporting this problem in the right place? Or perhaps this should be done by direct email? I don't usually file bugs on the Internet so I wanted to be sure I'm not breaking some kind of etiquette? My son and I are very grateful for GCompris and I'd like to help as much as I can.
