This bug also effects me. This may be a regression because I never
observed the problem before this weekend and have been running lucid on
this laptop for several months.

I have confirmed that
modprobe -r iwlagn modprobe iwlagn
resolves the problem

[Bug 568756] Re: Intel Wireless driver dies randomly

2010-04-25 Thread Tom Pringle
update: the problem on my machine occurs whenever I bring the machine
out of Sleep (suspend to ram). Based on that it must be a very recent
regression because I typically put the machine to sleep a multiple times
per day and I would have noticed this sooner if it wasn't a regression.
(I've been running lucid on this machine for over a month.)

[Bug 364156] Re: powernow-k8: BIOS does not provide ACPI -PSS objects in a way that Linux understands

2010-04-13 Thread Tom Pringle
I've already fixed this problem on my Lenovo laptop by building in a
custom DSDT. As I understand it, this means I have to merge the table
with each new kernel change and rebulid. I guess that will be need
less often once 10.04 is released.

Note that i see this problem on all 6 AMD platforms I work with.

I've also filed this bug up stream with no positive outcome.

If Windows can handle the situation I'm not sure how we can conclude the
BIOS is the problem?

@Tom Pringle: even though you get the same kernel warning (symptom), for
you this is a different situation, because you are using completely
different hardware (cause). That is also why I think similar bug reports
for different hardware should not be merged

AFAIK, there can be three main causes for this warning:
 1) Your BIOS is not configured to support C 'n' Q
 2) Your BIOS is incomplete
 3) You are using a different (newer) CPU than the ones your motherboard
 supports

For Lenovo I know they offers _incomplete_ ACPI information, you will
have to override your ACPI data by using a custom DSDT. You should be
able to find some howto's on the Internet, I don't have the full
 details...

But either way, these bug reports do not apply to any software in
Ubuntu, except that you cannot use a customized powernow-k8 driver
because this module is built into the kernel image...

2010-04-13 Thread Tom Pringle
Hi David,

I had followed some instructions on the web which required building the DSDT
into kernel. I'll try the approach you suggest here this evening.

I'll try to get you more details on some of the other machines where I
observe this problem on the weekend.

Thanks,
Tom

On all 4 AMD platforms I can test on, I've never seen this problem. You
should look at each platform individually. I noticed only one
dmidecode.txt, so I wasn't aware of additional platforms.

Maybe you can post me the details on the other platforms to my email

I can be of any assistance to you...

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 136252 ***

Yes I found that removing the extra ARRAY line fixed the problem.

I still have a problem mount MD arrays from fstab during boot. I have
to execute sudo mount -a after boot to access MD arrays. Could
potential hack around this in my .bashrc but I'd like to move my home
directory onto an MD mirror.

[Bug 364156] Re: powernow-k8: BIOS does not provide ACPI -PSS objects in a way that Linux understands

2010-01-30 Thread Tom Pringle
I see this problem on all 6 AMD machines I work with on a regular basis.
CPU frequency scaling is disabled. Most of these machines have the log
message

 [Firmware Bug]: powernow-k8: No
compatible ACPI _PSS objects found.

These machines are configured with motherboards from various vendors
using various AMD / NVIDIA chipsets. The common factor is the K8 / K10
cpu architecture and the Linux kernel (2.6.28 and .31 possibly earlier
as well).

The problem is most acute on the recently released IBM thinkpad edge
notebook which boots both Window7 and Ubuntu 10.04. In windows it
appears to run at a much lower temperature. Based on this observation I
assume frequency scaling is working in Windows so it is hard to
understand how the lack of frequency scaling in Ubuntu could be a BIOS
bug. Given the pervasiveness of the problem in Linux and the
observation that Windows seems to scale CPU frequency, isn't this
problem more likely to be a Linux kernel issue. Or does windows somehow
workaround the BIOS bug. If so perhaps there is workaround that could
be applied in the linux kernel.

[Bug 493733] Re: (K)ubuntu 9.10 won't boot after recent kernel update

2009-12-29 Thread Tom Pringle
Based on my experience with bug reports on Launchpad, I tend to doubt
anyone is going to look at this without more information. I have the
impression that everyone has switched over to to working on the next

For 9.10, I modified my boot configuration so that it would
automatically boot from -15. If you need the details on how to do that
I can provide them in a later post.

what does the tag kernel-series-unknown imply? Isn't the kernel
series very clear. All of the people reporting this very serious

that would mean 2.6.31-16. Right?

[Bug 493733] [NEW] (K)ubuntu 9.10 won't boot after recent kernel update

2009-12-07 Thread Tom Pringle
Public bug reported:

after updating my system on Sunday 6 December which included a kernel
update the system no longer boots. The boot process proceeds just past
the (K)ubuntu loading status bar screen but fails to make it far enough
to show the login screen. The systme apparently hangs?

There is at least one thread with several other users who have also
encountered this problem on various systems.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1347951

My system consists of a recent AMD quadcore with AMD790 chipset. I can
provide more details as needed.

[Bug 447840] [NEW] Window Manager Session Crashes After recent karmic update (presume this is due to picking up Mesa 7.6)

2009-10-10 Thread Tom Pringle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I recently updated my 2 PCs running Karmic. Both machines use the same video
card radeon X1900. Both machines started crashing X back to the login screen.
On one machine I can no longer log in. I was able to stabilize the second
machine by disabling desktop effects. This did n't seem to help the first
machine.

How can I back out the Mesa 7.6 changes to know whether that change is
the source of the regression?

I see this problem on 2 64bit installations of karmic. Can I use the
package sited above?

Tormod Volden wrote on 2009-10-09: #14
I have verified that 7.6.0-1ubuntu2~bug446578~1 fixes the issue in this report.

I added the ppa to my sources.list and updated but upgrade didn't pick
up any new mesa packages. What else am I supposed to do?

Thanks,

I also tried setting radeon.modeset=1 on the kernel command line but it
did not seem to help. I am not sure I put this parameter in the correct
place though.

I hit the shift key during boot to bring up the grub menu
selected 'e' to edit the boot menu entry
then appended the radeon.modeset=1 to the command line starting with linux
then ctrl-x to boot

[Bug 346425] Re: Kubuntu install fails to detect software (fake) Intel Matrix RAID0 SSD volume on Alienware M17 laptop

2009-09-13 Thread Tom Pringle
Thanks for the tips, Tormod Volden and danwood76.

On Alpha 2or3 (can't recall which release) I was able to boot from the
live CD, load Ubiquity which would correctly detect my RAID0 volume, I
could then create partitions on the RAID0 volume (ext4,swap) and install
the OS. This procedure would crash at the very end of installation
while installing GRUB (I don't recall any indication of version)

On Alpha 5, I am able to boot from the live CD, load Ubiquity which does
*not* detect my RAID0 volume. Instead it detects 2 separate volumes.
Since I'd like to avoid nuking the windows 7 install I have on this
RAID0 volume until after I confirm I can run Ubuntu, i have not
proceeded beyond that point with Ubiquity.

On Alpha 5, the alternative install *is* able to detect the RAID0 volume
and I am able to create partitions and install the OS but the installer
fails to install GRUB (it looks like GRUB2 is the only option). I then
tried LILO which also failed.

I will now try Alpha5 Ubiquity with Tormod tip to run Ubiquity on Alpha5
and danwodd76's tip to install grub1.

[Bug 346425] Re: Kubuntu install fails to detect software (fake) Intel Matrix RAID0 SSD volume on Alienware M17 laptop

2009-09-13 Thread Tom Pringle
Setting these lines did not cause ubiquity to detect my RAID0 volume.
 sudo mkdir /var/lib/disk-detect
 sudo touch /var/lib/disk-detect/activate_dmraid
Also note that I have observed ubiquity correctly detect my RAID0 volume on an
earlier karmic alpha release but after this work around was post in bug 44609

Should I file a new bug?

[Bug 346425] Re: Kubuntu install fails to detect software (fake) Intel Matrix RAID0 SSD volume on Alienware M17 laptop

2009-09-12 Thread Tom Pringle
The alternate CD failed to install the GRUB (I think it tried to install
GRUB2 but don't recall now) I also tried the LILO option but that ask
several questions that I was sure how to answer and ultimately failed.
Perhaps there is a way to use the Windows7 bootloader I already have
installed?

I think I'll give ubiquity a try with Alpha 5.

If GRUB2 does not work with DMRAID which bootloader should I be using?
Any idea when GRUB2 will work with DMRAID?

Looks like Ubiquity has regressed. On Alpha 2or3 it was able to detect
the DMRAID partitions. On Alpha 5 it detects 2 non RAID drives.

On the upside, I noticed that karmic now seems to use the long awaited
open source driver for the ATI R600 GPU!

[Bug 346425] Re: Kubuntu install fails to detect software (fake) Intel Matrix RAID0 SSD volume on Alienware M17 laptop

2009-09-09 Thread Tom Pringle
I believe it does exist in the 9.04 release, but appears to be fixed in
karmic.

However, I have not yet successfully install karmic due another problem
that showed up at the end of the ubiquity install (forgot the details).
I believe that is a different problem.

I last tried Alpha (2 or 3). I will try a more recent build and if the
problem persists open a new bug. unless it is preferred that I continue
with this bug.

[Bug 379831] Re: ata2 exception EMask delays/prevents booting 9.04 8.10

2009-08-19 Thread Tom Pringle
Is this the right place to file this problem?

Extracting part of the dmesg log file... You can see that the ATA logic
appears to report lost interrupts during DMA operation which causes it
to sequentially try slower DMA modes until it finally arrives at a PIO
mode that works. This process appears to take approximately 40 seconds
(boot time feels much longer).

After looking at this further, it is not clear to me that this is the
same cause as the one which created this bug but merely the similar log
dump text (exception Emask) and certainly the same symptom (delayed
booting)

Perhaps forcing the device connected to ata7 to PIO from the start would
work around this problem? Perhaps this can be configured in the bios.
I will experiment this weekend.

Hope this helps resolve the problem. Please let me know if there are
debug experiments I can perform.

[Bug 328917] Re: GCompris core dumps at load time in kubuntu jaunty jackalope (alpha 3)

2009-03-25 Thread Tom Pringle
I just tried install Gcompris from a fresh Alpha6 install and the
problem remains.

Unfortunately, I'm now having difficulty building Gcompris from source
so it would be really nice if someone could update the binary package
that is downloaded when a user types: 'apt-get install Gcompris'

Should I do something else to help resolved this?

[Bug 346425] Re: Kubuntu install fails to detect software (fake) Intel Matrix RAID0 SSD volume on Alienware M17 laptop

2009-03-25 Thread Tom Pringle
Perhaps this is filed against the wrong component? Does the fact that I
can access and manipulated the disk partitions from GParted imply that
DMRAID is working correctly?

I found another bit of information (don't have the link but could find
it if someone thought it would help) that suggested that Ubuntu's build
of Partman had a patch that caused problems with RAID configurations.

Is there something else I can do to help resolve this problem?

Thanks,
Tom

[Bug 346425] [NEW] Kubuntu install fails to detect software (fake) Intel Matrix RAID0 SSD volume on Alienware M17 laptop

2009-03-21 Thread Tom Pringle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dmraid

The machine came from Alienware with a RAID0 SSD partition formated with
NTFS for Vista. I would like to dual boot Kubuntu 9.04.

1. I first tried booting from the alternate CD. The installer detected the
RAID0 volume as 2 separate disks.
2. I then tried directly installing from the live CD. Same result.
3. I canceled the install from the live CD to boot to the Kubuntu desktop.
4. I launched a konsole window and typed:

  ubu...@ubuntu:~$ ls -la /dev/mapper
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 160 2009-03-21 16:10 .
drwxr-xr-x 16 root root4500 2009-03-21 16:10 ..
crw-rw 1 root root 10, 61 2009-03-21 11:27 control

  ubu...@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get update
  ubu...@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install dmraid

I believe this message appeard in /var/log/syslog at this point
Mar 21 16:10:46 ubuntu dmraid-activate: ERROR: Cannot retrieve RAID set
information for isw_bdhiijife_Volume0
but may have appeared at a later point (see below)

  ubu...@ubuntu:~$ ls -la /dev/mapper
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 160 2009-03-21 16:10 .
drwxr-xr-x 16 root root4500 2009-03-21 16:10 ..

brw-rw 1 root disk 252, 4 2009-03-21 16:10 isw_bdhiijife_Volume04

If I install gparted at this point I am able to detect the RAID0
volume and add an ext4 and swap partition

5. However when I then ran the ubiquity installer as I switch to the
partition manager page

Ubiquity posed a Partman Crashed dialog with this message:
Partman failed with exit code 141. Further information may be found in
/var/log/syslog.
Do you want to try running this step again before continuing?
If you do not, your installation may fail entirely or may be broken.

and looking again at /var/log/syslog:

[Bug 332764] Re: [HP Compaq nc4010] suspend/resume problem

2009-02-25 Thread Tom Pringle
Clarification of what I wrote earlier

I should add that the reason I am using hibernate is because when I
suspend to ram I can *not* find a way to wake the system back up (that is
another bug)

If there is anything I can do to help debug this please let me know.

Re: [Bug 332764] Re: [HP Compaq nc4010] suspend/resume problem

2009-02-24 Thread Tom Pringle
Hello,

I'm not sure if Hibernate ever worked on this machine. I install 9.04
about one month ago and I think it may have originally worked back when
I first installed alpha 3. I think I noticed the problem about a week
or two ago then I just nuked my system and reinstalled alpha 4 from
scratch and noticed that the hibernate problem persisted.

It is very reproducible. I don't think it started as a result of
locking up the system.

I should add that the reason I am using hibernate is because when I
suspend to ram I can find a way to wake the system back up (that is
another bug)

I'll try the experiment that you suggest below and report back

On 02/23/2009 05:18 AM, Andy Whitcroft wrote:
Could you please let us know the type of machine this is (make and
model). Did you recently have a hibernate failure, this could have been
some time before the report was triggered and offered to you. If you
did, did the machine break while going to sleep, or while coming back
from sleep? Is this reproducible say over 10 cycles. Has hibernate ever
worked in the past, if so which kernel release (cat
/proc/version_signature)? Please include any information as to the
circumstances leading up to this failure, for example did your battery
run out? Did the machine lock up, did any messages come out? If it is
reproducible could you try the hibernate from VT1, press ctrl-alt-F1,
login, and run pm-hibernate there. If you could test and report back
 here that would be helpful.

I tried

* press ctrl-alt-F1,

* and run pm-hibernate

the system went into hibernation state without a problem but hung when I
tried to restore the system after hibernation.

about one month ago and I think it may have originally worked back
when I first installed alpha 3. I think I noticed the problem about a
week or two ago then I just nuked my system and reinstalled alpha 4
from scratch and noticed that the hibernate problem persisted.

It is very reproducible. I don't think it started as a result of
 locking up the system.

I should add that the reason I am using hibernate is because when I
suspend to ram I can find a way to wake the system back up (that is
 another bug)

I'll try the experiment that you suggest below and report back

[Bug 332764] [NEW] suspend/resume problem

2009-02-21 Thread Tom Pringle
Public bug reported:

the system posed a dialog indicating a detected but I'm not sure exactly what
was wrong.
I have noticed that a process called console-kit-daemon seems to consume a
great deal of CPU time. I think this only happens after a resuming from
hibernation. I'm not sure if this is related to the problem noted by the
system.

[Bug 328917] Re: GCompris core dumps at load time in kubuntu jaunty jackalope (alpha 3)

2009-02-13 Thread Tom Pringle
Yes that sounds like the right solution. I didn't realize I was using
an experimental release of GCompris. Who is the right person to update
the Kubuntu package system to the correct release of GCompris? Perhpas
my /etc/apt/sources.list isn't pointing at the correct place? (which
would be?)

I tried downloading and building the latest source
   sudo apt-get build-dep gcompris
   svn co http://svn.gnome.org/svn/gcompris/trunk gcompris

but hit this error during configure
checking for python module pysqlite2... no
   configure: error: *** pysqlite2 missing

However, sqlite2 package was not available
   sudo apt-get install python-sqlite2
   E: Couldn't find package python-sqlite2

Re: [Bug 328917] Re: GCompris core dumps at load time in kubuntu jaunty jackalope (alpha 3)

2009-02-13 Thread Tom Pringle
Hi Bruno,

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I just wanted to be sure that I'm reporting this problem in the right
place? Or perhaps this should be done by direct email? I don't usually
file bugs on the Internet so I wanted to be sure I'm not breaking some kind
of etiquette?

My son and I are very grateful for GCompris and I'd like to help as much as
I can.

Thanks,
Tom

Let me clarify. This is not an experimental version of GCompris. Only

Status in gcompris source package in Ubuntu: New

 Bug description:
I installed GCompris with this command line:
 sudo apt-get install gcompris

When I first tried to run GCompris from the K menu it started to launch
 but then exited silently.

I then ran GCompris with this command line:
 gcompris

 which generated this error:
Exception exceptions.ImportError: 'No module named Numeric'
 in 'garbage collection' ignored
Fatal Python error: unexpected exception during garbage collection
 Aborted (core dumped)

digging through the python code I found this file that used the module
 Numeric
 /usr/share/gcompris/python/DTW/dtw.py

!explicitly installing the python-numeric package resolved the problem!
 sudo apt-get install python-numeric

I presume the package manager should have detected this dependency
automatically when I originally installed GCompris
