[Bug 164799] Print is extremely slow
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: cupsys I am using Ubuntu 7.10 and a HP PSC 1110 printer, which is correctly installed by the system. However, printing is extremely slow, for a simple A3 page it takes about 3 minutes. In Sysem->Administration->Printing->Printer Options I selected Printout Mode to Draft Grayscale, hoping that in draft mode it will work reasonably, but that is not tha case. I mention this happens on both a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop and a Dell P4 desktop system. One thing I observed now: on the laptop it was installed a PSC 1100, but on the desktop I selected manually what I have, namely a PSC 1110. The desktop prints in about 3 minutes a page, and the laptop in about 1,5 minutes. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gaim I have myself in the GAIM list of contacts, both on yahoo and gtalk/jabber protocols. [Bug 108522] Ubuntu 7.04 installed (internet upgrade)
After trying various offline upgrades, I reinstalled 6.10 again, and then upgraded from the internet. The upgrade went really fine, no problem at all. I saw some improvements, most notably a Gaim status bug fixed, and my photo camera is recognized. One small annoying thing is that the boot is 4x slower that 6.10, on exactly the same hardware. Specifically, in the first 7% of the progress bar. So I don't know why it hangs, because I did not wait for hours to continue if it would have. Most probably the system tried to connect to some servers (maybe the romanian one ?) and it waits and waits for some response. Because when I removed the network cable, it went ok until some other later hang, the fail to install GRUB thing. So, for the moment, I'm pleased, for the system is up and running. The menu is clean and well arranged. I don't understand though why the "Control Center" shortcut is not available in Preferences or Administration by default. So, I think you can close this bug as 'not enough data'. Thanks for the promptness. I know you are busy people. I should have written this epilogue at my initiative. But I'm learning, I just read "How To Ask Questions The Smart Way" http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs /smart-questions.html :) Bye. -- Installing Ubuntu 7.04 hangs at 70% (Configuring apt sources) when computer is connected to internet via DHCP https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/108522 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 109382] Reinstall
Hello Michael, Unfortunately I cannot do this since I reinstalled the system like this: installed the 6.10 version, and then, upgraded from the internet. Everything works fine now. Only the boot is a 4x slower (estimate) from 6.10. But the rest is excellent. I noticed a annoing bug in gaim fixed, and improved startup times for some applications. Overall, 7.04 is a better release, even my photot camera is recognized. The big problems was to set it up. Please see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/108522 for my arcane experience of installing 7.04. Again, on the same system, 6.10 installs excellent. With 7.04 the LiveCD won't start: /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off and the alternate (non-live) CD hangs at three diffrent points. I'm glad 7.04 is up and running though. Except for the boot time, which is significantly slower. Congrats, and I appreciate you monitor the bugs and try to help people. This es extremely important, otherwise, we would feel 'abandoned'. -- [apport] gnome-app-install crashed with ImportError in () https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109382 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 108522] LiveCD
Yes, it turns out that it is a LiveCD, except that it doesn't want to live :). I boot from it and it gives me the following message: BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-2ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off (initramfs) I saw that others experienced same problems (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=292533, upgrade from 6.06 to 6.10). I did not want to upgrade, but a clean install with the LiveCD 7.04. It does not start because of the tty thing. So I gave a fourth (or more?) try to install 7.04, and because it is not possbile directly from CD, and the upgrade from 6.10 to 7.04 from the CD messed up my system (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-app- install/+bug/109382), I tried yesterday (23 Apr) to upgrade from the internet, after reinstalling 6.10 (the 6.10 LiveCD works fine, no tty bug at all). Today (24 Apr) I left the computer (went to job) applying the upgrades, after successfully downloaded distribution upgrade packages. I downloaded ubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso and tried to install from it. First attempt: Installed with succesfully recognizing the network, but hanged at 70% of base system install. Second attempt: Installed with succesfully recognizing the network, afterwards unplugged the cable, passed from that 70% of base system install, but then hanged at next 20%. Third attempt: Installed completely with network cable unplugged, but failed to install GRUB, possibly due to HDD error, after installing everithing else. I think is hdd error because I saw the last lines of the log (Alt+F2, thanks to school Linux courses :) and tail -f bla bla. Now I insall 6.06 again, from the LiveCD. For 7.04 there is no LiveCD, according to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD. In the future I will not make this mistake any more, but try a live internet upgrade. Though, I could not recommend Ubuntu to people without a second computer connected to internet for troubleshooting, and definitely cannot be installed by not-techie. Or maybe installed by mild-techie from LiveCD. I will try to upgrade the from CD, if possible, as suggested by Richard Birnie.
