Re: [Bug 1830231] Re: Firefox will not connect to any website

2019-05-24 Thread Tony Morton
OK - this fixed the problem;

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1145311/internet-is-working-but-firefox-
browser-cannot-connect

Answer 2

2

I was having the same issue. Removing prefs.js did not fix the problem
for me.

Restarting firefox via Menu -> Help -> "Restart with Add-ons Disabled"
and choosing to restart in "safe mode" gave me a working browser.

I opened a regular instance of firefox again and it was still not
working (obviously). I repeated the "Restart with Add-ons Disabled" but
selected "Refresh Firefox" at the final step and it seems to have fixed
the problem.

I went back through the preferences section and have changed back all of
my settings there and I haven't broken the browser yet.

Again, this doesn't get to the root of the problem, but perhaps it
narrows it down some? Maybe someone else knows more about what all gets
reset when you choose "Refresh Firefox"?

So this works - and the problem seems to be something inside Firefox,
possibly due to Add-Ons, the basis of which seems to have been changed.

This bug can be closed.

Tony Morton

Yes, the same issue. I am using the Opera browser while Firefox is out
of action, and Opera works fine. Does that help pin down a difference?
This problem only began after the Ubuntu update on Tuesday 21st which
was a list of system files, so maybe something that Firefox depends upon
was changed then?

The journalctl package is not installed on my system.

Re: [Bug 1550944] Re: Xorg crash

2016-03-03 Thread Tony Morton
Christopher,

Absolute nightmare. I used my dual boot setup to access Windows 8 and
update the BIOS and then had huge problems accessing Ubuntu, finally
using boot-repair since the BIOS upgrade had deleted the boot menu.
And after all that it has made absolutely no difference to the double
log in problem.

Tony Morton

[Bug 1499465] [NEW] Nautilus will not open an external hard drive with NTFS file system

NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
for more details.
Failed to sync device /dev/sdb1: No such device
Failed to close volume /dev/sdb1: No such device

NB I noted a recent update that referred to the NTFS file system and
prior to that update I had no problem accessing the external hard drive
that I use for backup. Now I cannot access that hard drive, a Seagate
Expansion Portable Drive

Re: [Bug 1325565] Re: Since the recent update to CUPS my Epson S20 printer no longer works

2014-08-17 Thread Tony Morton
Dear Pascal,

the problems began when I did the fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit
in April, ( a fresh install rather than an upgrade). There are some
large log files which record that, which I have attached.

I am sure I remember a cups update since that date, which I hoped would
sort out the problem, but it did not.

Here is the result of the debug output

The system-config-printer caused a GUI window to open that listed the
S20 printer and clicking on that gave options to look for its driver -
which of course I had already installed from the localhost/631 control
panel.

Re: [Bug 1325565] Re: Since the recent update to CUPS my Epson S20 printer no longer works

2014-08-15 Thread Tony Morton
Dear Pascal,

Thank you for your assistance. I just discovered the hidden control
panel for CUPS on localhost/631 a few days ago, by accident when trying
out a different Linux OS (Puppy Linux) which had an item in its main
menu to Add Printer. Having seen that I tried it on my Ubuntu 14.04 64
bit system and the CUPS control panel listed the Epson Stylus S20, and
found a driver for it, and assigned it to the USB port that it was
plugged into. The printer then worked normally , as it used to before
the upgrades, with a full menu of printing options. Since then I have
moved the printer plug to another USB socket, and it has been
successfully detected.

So the problem seems to have been that the printer was not automatically
detected and set up by the gutenprint driver, but once I had found out
about the manual installation, and used that, it now gets detected. If I
had known about localhost/631 months ago I could have solved the
problem, but Ubuntu does not reveal the existence of this to its users.

Here is the output from the first part of the Debugging Printer Problems
page that you sent me the link for, which detects the printer OK, so I
cannot reproduce for you the steps which led to the problem of
non-recognition of the printer.

regards
Tony Morton

the update I have only a basic printer menu and the printer does not
work at all. Has its driver been removed from the packages? Will they be
re-instated please?

[Bug 1300900] [NEW] XSANE crashes on scan or preview

2014-04-01 Thread Tony Morton
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10 the HP Scanjet 2300c that used to work with
XSANE now crashes on scan or preview scan. The scanner is detected, the
programme opens properly, but then crashes when used. Error reports are
generated and I assume sent off somewhere?

Apport has been sending reports on this since I upgraded 78 days ago.

Is this going to be solved?, I need a working scanner.

[Bug 1163976] [NEW] Sandybridge-gt1 lockup

2013-04-03 Thread Tony Morton
Public bug reported:

Ever since accepting an update package in mid March my PC has had almost
continuous screen freeze issues several times a day, either transitory
or complete requiring a hard re boot. I also get a continuous stream of
apport system error messages which I have been sending off since mid
March. The freeze has sometimes been a diagonal break up of the screen
picture but mostly just a complete freeze of picture.

Looking at Google searches this seems to be a persistent problem for many
users.
I am using Ubuntu12.10 64 bit version on a Dell Inspiron 660s. The very long
apport report mentions sandybridge-gt1GPU lockup IPEHR:0x25102000 IPEHR:
0x0b14001 and also mentions xserver-xorg-video-intel2:2.20-.9-ubuntu2. I have
tried reinstalling this latter file with no improvment resulting. The freeze
seems to be triggered by using the wheel on the wheel mouse, or by sudden
movements of the mouse.

Can this bug please be fixed? How about re-instating things to the way
they were before the mid March update package?

Xserver-xorg version 1:7.7+1ubuntu4

[Bug 1003590] [NEW] evolution will not connect to my ISP o2.co.uk or its mail servers

2012-05-23 Thread Tony Morton
Public bug reported:

Under Ubuntu 11.10, serially upgraded from the original 9.04, I could
use Evolution to access my email accounts at o2.co.uk and virgin.net
without any problems. I have carried out a fresh install of 12.04 and
Evolution will not connect to mail.o2.co.uk or relay.o2broadband.co.uk
instead returning an error; ERR[AUTH] invalid user or password. This is
despite the settings being exactly the same as worked successfully under
11.10 . The same is happening if I use Thunderbird as well.

o2 say they do not support Linux or MAC and will put no time into
solving any issue, but they do say they have not recently changed
anything in their systems.

I can access webmail pages with no problem, but it is more convenient to
use a mail client, and at the moment nothing works.

[Bug 576705] Re: Epson inkjet printer does not work on 10.04

2010-06-03 Thread Tony Morton
Hello again Till

I figured out what I was doing wrong. The first time around I used the
archive manager to open the package, and eventually I realised I should
have just saved the whole file to the desktop. Running your alien
command with the correct path to the file on the desktop has made the
printer work again.

So, I thank you very much.

It is somewhat annoying that Ubuntu should delete a printer driver
between versions in the upgrade process, don't they realise that people
still use old printers? I am afraid this is the kind of thing that puts
people off Linux.

Again, many thanks for your help

Tony

[Bug 576705] Re: Epson inkjet printer does not work on 10.04

2010-06-03 Thread Tony Morton
Till, thanks for your help, but running the instruction in message #7 did not
make the Epson S20 work, and I do not understand what to do after downloading
the first package that you list in your message #13 . I have installed the
alien package that you recommend, but cannot complete the sudo alien etc
command . Working with the terminal is still a bit of a mystery to me, I can
copy and paste commands and when they work it is great, and when they do not I
am lost. Can you offer any more detailed guidance please.
Many thanks
