[Bug 397223] Re: switch user cannot communicate with gdm

It's not confined to just switching users... I can't access the login
screen editor either; gdmsetup gives the same problem.

[Bug 420966] Re: nautilus frequently uses 100% cpu

2009-09-02 Thread Truthiswithin
I figured it out... the problem was setting the templates directory in
.config/user-dirs.dirs as:

XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"

This causes nautilus to go berserk for some reason; I should have known
better than to set one of the directories to my Desktop, I guess.

2009-09-02 Thread Truthiswithin
Installed cups 1.4.0-3.1
Deleted the old printer
Set sudo aa-enforce cupsd
Plugged printer in
Printer found
Print test page
Printed successfully
No residual usb service eating CPU

Looks like everything is fixed from this end. Thanks people, your work
is appreciated :)

2009-09-02 Thread Truthiswithin
okay, I had to delete the old instance of the printer, then let it find
the printer again. And I added the apparmor line to the wrong place...
silly me. Now I can verify that adding the line to apparmor makes
everything okay in this bug. The only thing left for me is the usb
process at 100%, which I see is fixed in the latest cups.

not fixed here... added the string to apparmor, restart apparmor, now
even the workaround doesn't work... and why can't I see my usb devices
by just running lsusb all of a sudden? now I need to be root to see
them. Anyway, here's dmesg:

And the Admin>Printing says the printer is "unplugged or turned off"

[Bug 420966] Re: nautilus frequently uses 100% cpu

2009-08-31 Thread Truthiswithin
Thanks Sebastien, here's a backtrace, but I am not sure I am doing it
right; I get to the part where I type "continue" and then try to
replicate the problem. After opening a window, nautilus peaks the cpu,
then stops. I have to open a new terminal and type "killall nautilus"
to continue making the backtrace; CTRL+C doesn't work, as suggested at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace .

[Bug 397223] Re: switch user cannot communicate with gdm

2009-08-30 Thread Truthiswithin
I guess I should confess that a while back I upgraded gdm manually, not
really knowing what I was doing, because of a bug in an upgrade that
left me without a gui. Eventually I figured out how to use the tar.gz,
diff, and dsc packages on Launchpad, but I am not sure if I fudged
things in the learning process... now gdm works fine, except that I
think my messing around did something to the switch user option, and now
it doesn't work.

[Bug 420966] Re: nautilus frequently uses 100% cpu

2009-08-29 Thread Truthiswithin
I'm enclosing an strace that shows the sequence of events:

1) nautilus running in the background as normal
2) start strace
3) open a folder
3) wait for folder to become responsive
4) close the folder
5) hit CRTL+C to stop strace

The problem occurs even when viewing an empty folder.

[Bug 420966] [NEW] nautilus frequently uses 100% cpu

2009-08-29 Thread Truthiswithin
Public bug reported:

Karmic 64-bit
latest updates August 28th

Everytime I open a nautilus window, say by double clicking on a desktop
folder, the window opens, but nautilus takes about five seconds at 100%
cpu just to let me see what's in the folder. Then, if I switch to
another folder in that window, the same thing happens. Sometimes this
leads the whole desktop to freeze and only killall nautilus gets my
desktop back.

I tried ubuntu-bug -p nautilus, but it crashes on me, says there's a bug
with firefox...

[Bug 420015] [NEW] Local printer not found (epson stylus c66)

2009-08-27 Thread Truthiswithin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

As of updates this morning, my local USB connected Epson Stylus C66 is
no longer found by Ubuntu Karmic Alpha. It worked before, and the
driver was still installed, but even when plugged in:

$ lsusb
...
Bus 008 Device 003: ID 04b8:0005 Seiko Epson Corp. Stylus D88+
...

I was told that the printer is offline or disconnected. I deleted the
printer from System>Adminstration>Printing, then searched for it, and it
was not found. Enclosed is the troubleshooting info.

To reproduce, just plug in the local printer, turn it on, then try to
add a new printer in System>Adminstration>Printing (actually, if I
remember correctly, it should be recognized automatically once it is
plugged in and turned on).

[Bug 410936] Re: incorrect date for appointments in gnome-panel

2009-08-17 Thread Truthiswithin
@Pedro

Thank you for taking the time to look into this... I think an update has
fixed the wrong date issue. I can confirm that the dates are correct
now. But, when I open the calender by clicking on the clock on the
panel, then selecting the date that has the appointment, then opening
the appointments section, then clicking on the edit button, it still
opens Evolution to today's date, rather than the date of the
appointment. Can you confirm whether this is so?

[Bug 410936] Re: incorrect date for appointments in gnome-panel

2009-08-15 Thread Truthiswithin
@Pedro - that would entail me more or less repeating what I have said
above; if you think rephrasing it in that way will make it easier to
understand, then here goes:

* Is this reproducible?

Well, I can reproduce it, otherwise I wouldn't be reporting it...

* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

When you open the date & time applet on the panel, you would see any
appointments you have created in evolution on the day prior to the
actual appointment as created. Further, when clicking on the day prior
that is in bold, it would show the appointment name (which should be on
the next day) and give an edit button. Hitting the edit button would
open evolution and show today's date instead of opening to the
appointment date.

[Bug 410936] [NEW] incorrect date for appointments in gnome-panel

2009-08-08 Thread Truthiswithin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Appointments are not properly integrated with the gnome-panel applet on
my system.

What I expected to happen and what actually happens instead.

When I open the date & time applet on the panel, I would expect to see
my all-day appointments in bold on the correct days. I instead see them
on the day prior to the actual appointment as created in evolution.
Further, when clicking on the day prior that is in bold, it shows the
appointment name and gives an edit button. Hitting the edit button
should open evolution and allow me to edit the appointment. Instead, it
opens evolution and shows today's date instead.

2009-07-21 Thread Truthiswithin
Here's a backtrace, but I don't know if I did it correctly... with gdb
running it doesn't actually crash, just freezes and turns dark.
Pressing CTRL+C in gdb as recommended here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace

just caused gdb to freeze as well.

Downloading valgrind...

I can confirm this exact bug, while trying to change the word
"arrainment" to "arraignment". Reproduced twice in a row, but I'm not
up to doing the valgrind log right now (slow internet connection).

Using Karmic Alpha 64bit, updated this morning, July 21, 2009.

[Bug 402805] Re: gwibber not switching to current workspace on minimize+restore

2009-07-21 Thread Truthiswithin
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gwibber

  What I expect to happen:

When I click on the tray icon for Skype, if it is open on another
workspace, the first click selects it. The second click minimizes it.
The third click brings it up on the current workspace. I would expect
as much with Gwibber. Actually, better would be to have it minimize on
the first click (no need to select it first), then open it up again on
the new workspace on the second click.

  What really happens:

When I click on the tray icon for Gwibber, if it is open on another
workspace, it minimizes. Clicking on the icon again brings it up on the
original workspace. The only way to have the tray icon open it in the
new workspace is if I switch to the workspace where it is open, minimize
it there, then move to the new workspace and click on the icon again, in
which case it does open in the workspace.

+ Update: What is worse is that if I minimize it from another workspace
+ via the tray icon, then return to the workspace where it was opened and
+ try to use the tray icon to restore it, it doesn't open, and I have to
+ find some kind of magic combination of tray icon presses on the two
+ desktops that brings it back, generally on the wrong desktop... I can't
+ figure out the pattern, but it certainly isn't what is supposed to
+ happen.

[Bug 398898] Re: wlan switched off on boot up

2009-07-18 Thread Truthiswithin
I realized that I misunderstood the problem; it is not the network
adapter that is off, it is wireless in general that is disabled. When I
connect a usb wifi adapter, it still requires me to push the keyboard
button for it to work (the notification applet says "wireless disabled"
until I do). the internal uses wlan4 and iwlagn driver, the usb uses
wlan3 and the zd1211rw driver.

[Bug 398191] Re: application opens on wrong desktop

2009-07-11 Thread Truthiswithin
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: compiz

  Ubuntu 9.10 (also affected Jaunty)

  What happens:

Often I have many apps open at once, on different desktops (disfferent
cube faces of the desktop cube). When I open a new app, I want it to
open on a specific desktop (face A), so I rotate to that desktop and
click on the app's icon. Then, I go back to another cube face (face B)
to look at another app, and suddenly the new app pops up on this face
(face B), instead of the face where I clicked on the icon (face A).

  What I expect to happen:

It would be seem more correct if the original face were remembered and
the app opened on the face where it began loading, instead of where I
happen to be when it finishes loading.
+
+ This has been confirmed here:
+
+ http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/20570/
+
+ And it has been stated that:
+
+ "This is a compiz integration bug from what i remember KDE 3 and 4

[Bug 398085] [NEW] no sound on startup

2009-07-11 Thread Truthiswithin
Public bug reported:

There is no sound coming from the speakers when I play a sound file, but
the usb headphones work fine. After I type

sudo alsa force-reload

the sound is working again (after I then unmute the sound in the mixer).

I get these errors in syslog:

[Bug 398069] [NEW] pasting from external source kills ability to paste

2009-07-10 Thread Truthiswithin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: geany

Geany 0.17

Something changed recently, not sure if it's a Geany upgrade or
something else conflicting.

What I expect: when I have text in the clipboard from another program,
pasting it into geany should cause the text to be pasted

What happens instead: not only does the text not get pasted, it causes
geany to refuse to paste any text even copied from within geany itself.
If I shut geany down and open it again, I can at least copy and paste
from within the program, until I try to paste from another source.

[Bug 397223] Re: switch user cannot communicate with gdm

2009-07-09 Thread Truthiswithin
Sorry Sebastien, that was unfair of me...

Yes, that was vague... I meant the menu item right between "Lock Screen"
and "Shut Down..."

I assume I am using gdm; I don't have KDE installed, just the regular
Ubuntu Karmic. I am upgrading all the time and restarting often.

[Bug 395814] [NEW] CD drive eject button does not eject cd

2009-07-05 Thread Truthiswithin
Public bug reported:

Dist: Karmic
Platform: AMD64

After a recent upgrade, the eject button on my CD drive doesn't work
when there is a CD in the drive, and when I try to eject a cd using the
right-click context menu, I have to enter a password just to eject it!

I assume this has something to do with the new dbus upgrades, as I was
previously getting errors whenever inserting an SD card, which have now
been replaced by this new behaviour of asking for authentication to
mount certain drives (or unmount the cd). I am not sure which package
to select, and I am getting no error message in the logs when I push the
eject button.

- line 147: echo "search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set ${fs_uuid}"
+ line 147: echo "search --fs-uuid --set ${fs_uuid}"

After an upgrade this morning, the following packages were upgraded:

replace x11-common 1:7.4~5ubuntu21 (using x11-common_1%3a7.4+3ubuntu2_all.deb)
replace w3m 0.5.2-2build1 (using w3m_0.5.2-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb)

replace libhal-storage1 0.5.12+git20090626-0ubuntu1 (using
libhal-storage1_0.5.12+git20090626-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb)
replace hal 0.5.12+git20090626-0ubuntu1 (using

replace xbase-clients 1:7.4~5ubuntu21 (using

replace libgksu2-0 2.0.10-1ubuntu1 (using libgksu2-0_2.0.12-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb)
replace xserver-xorg-video-all 1:7.4~5ubuntu21 (using
xserver-xorg-video-all_1%3a7.4+3ubuntu2_amd64.deb)
replace xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.4~5ubuntu21 (using
xserver-xorg-input-all_1%3a7.4+3ubuntu2_amd64.deb)
replace xserver-xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu21 (using
xserver-xorg_1%3a7.4+3ubuntu2_amd64.deb)
replace xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu21 (using xorg_1%3a7.4+3ubuntu2_amd64.deb)

and upon rebooting (which I did right after upgrading), I cannot get to
the graphical login screen. It keeps telling me that it cannot set up
my display and offering to run in low graphic mode or reconfigure my
display. Neither works, and the xorg.0.log file seems to say nothing of
the problem. My nvidia 9600M GS card driver seems to load fine. I'm
enclosing the xorg log just in case, but I think there is a bug in the
new xorg packages... as this just came up after the above upgrade.

[Bug 390504] Re: gnome-settings-daemon should keep its opinions about my disk management to itself

2009-06-29 Thread Truthiswithin
I don't think the ability to ignore a "given full disk" is enough... I
don't see any need to be warned, for instance, that an sd card from my
digital camera is "Low on disk space" in the first place. In fact, I
can only see the need for such a warning on drives that are involved in
the workings of ubuntu itself, i.e. the partition mounted as "/". I'll
check out the patch, though. Thanks for your work on this.

[Bug 392993] [NEW] on close using nautilus-open-terminal, gnome-terminal asks to close even when no process running.

2009-06-27 Thread Truthiswithin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-open-terminal

When I open an ordinary gnome-terminal, I can close it right away
without getting a confirmation dialog. When I use the nautilus-open-
terminal plugin to open a terminal, even if I try to then close it right
away, I get the enclosed dialog every time.

[Bug 392364] Re: gnome-terminal asks to close even when no process running

2009-06-26 Thread Truthiswithin
I couldn't figure it out at first, but I think I've realized where the problem
comes from now...
If it happens elsewhere, I can't reproduce it, but when I use
nautilus-open-terminal, right click in a folder and select "Open In Terminal",
closing that terminal brings up the dialogue, even when no process is active.
I guess it is a bug in that package?

[Bug 392364] [NEW] gnome-terminal asks to close even when no process running

[Bug 392224] [NEW] Nautilus freezes using 100% CPU when opening large movies

2009-06-25 Thread Truthiswithin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I open a large (1 GB) mp4 file in nautilus in a directory with
about ten such files, the mp4 opens fine in Movie Player, but when I
close down movie player, I find that nautilus is no longer responding,
turns gray but does not use any cpu. Only forcing it to quit works.
