[Bug 856810] Re: Boot hangs at "Booting system without full network configuration..."
I think this bug report demonstrates a significant problem in the current boot system: the reported user-visible symptom can be caused by a wide variety of underlying issues during the boot process. Further, it's hard to diagnose which underlying issue affects each system . I propose this bug number should track this difficulty of diagnosis in the boot system. Then, the various underlying causes should be filed as separate bugs as discovered, such as bug #838968, bug #864174 etc. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/856810 Title: Boot hangs at "Booting system without full network configuration..." [Bug 865056] [NEW] system thinks battery is critically low and goes to hibernation
Public bug reported: I suspended and resumed the system with fully charged battery. Right after resume, the system decided to hibernate. When I resumed again, I could see the dialog "Power - Laptop battery critically low - The battery is below the critical level and this computer is about to hibernate." Now, the power management settings show battery discharging with 1:48 (80%) left. Perhaps related: gnome-power-statistics shows two battery entries where the second one is "battery_BAT2" with type unknown. At some point, I saw this one in the battery indicator and as the primary battery even though the real battery had charge left. [Bug 864195] [NEW] Oneiric beta2 install fails on SATA RAID/fakeraid
Public bug reported: I installed Oneiric beta2 on a laptop that has SATA RAID/fakeraid. The installation process failed to install GRUB, and choosing to install GRUB on another partition didn't work either. However, I was able to install GRUB manually in the target chroot to /dev/mapper/isw_eahgecdhea_Volume0. This resulted in a system that could be booted but the boot would hang. To get a working system, I had to manually clean up the chroot with the following commands: mv /sbin/initctl.REAL /sbin/initctl mv /sbin/start-stop-daemon.REAL /sbin/start-stop-daemon Before that, I could see messages "Warning: Fake initctl called, doing nothing." but this didn't help me understand what was wrong before I read the ubiquity scripts. [Bug 864174] [NEW] boot hangs waiting for lightdm after purging gdm
Public bug reported: I've installed Oneiric beta2 and at some point installed and purged gdm. After that, boot will hang waiting for lightdm to start, which never happens. This is because /etc/X11/default-display-manager ends up saying "lightdm" whereas /etc/init/lightdm.conf accepts "/usr/bin/lightdm" or "/usr/sbin/lightdm". The user sees the splash screen messages "Waiting for up to 60 more seconds for network configuration" and "Booting system without full network configuration". However, the fix is to edit the contents of /etc/X11/default-display- manager to read "/usr/sbin/lightdm". There are two BIOS settings: "Switchable graphics" and "Discrete graphics". With the latter option, only the ATI GPU is in use, but with the former option, *both* GPUs are powered on by default. Neither of these options is good for battery runtime. - Fortunately, someone has found a solution that turns off the discrete - GPU in the switchable mode. [Bug 450202] Re: X crash at resume, gobject kept segfaulting
Sorry, I don't have any .crash files for X, gdm, gnome-session etc. just for gnome-keyring-daemon and indicator-messages-service as well as polkitd, console-kit-daemon and NetworkManager. Apport won't submit these as some unrelated library packages have been updated meanwhile. Anyway, I don't think the retrace is necessary in this case, as this seems to be a bug in the kernel or possibly X rather than in the individual apps, and the segfaults are just a symptom of something going horribly wrong. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: Invalid => New -- X crash at resume, gobject kept segfaulting https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/450202 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 445402] [NEW] emacs default font is huge
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: emacs23 Since the latest emacs upgrade in Karmic, the default font is now huge. The Set Default Font dialog claims the font is DejaVu Sans Mono Book 12, and in the preview, capital letters indeed are 12 pixels high. However, in the editor, capital letters are 14 pixels high and look bold. For comparison, capitals in the menu bar are the normal 10 pixels. To get a sane editor font, I need to set the size to 8, resulting in 9 pixels - I cannot get the height of 10 pixels, as sizes like 8.5 result in the error "Font not available". xdpyinfo reports 118x119 dots per inch, and Gnome font settings are at font size 10, 96 dpi, subpixels, a little hinting. Tested current status (humanity-icon-theme 0.4.1-0ubuntu1, gnome- settings-daemon 2.28.0-0ubuntu2). $ dpkg -S gsd-xrandr.svg humanity-icon-theme: /usr/share/icons/Humanity/apps/24/gsd-xrandr.svg gnome-settings-daemon: /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/gsd-xrandr.svg humanity-icon-theme: /usr/share/icons/Humanity/apps/48/gsd-xrandr.svg The ones in humanity-icon-theme are currently symlinks to display- capplet.svg. [Bug 430694] Re: agpgart-intel not loaded before drm sometimes, causes KMS to fail
As others have commented earlier, this bug appears to be somewhat random (a race condition?) and so a few successful boots don't mean the bug is fixed. If #32 doesn't do essentially more than #2, it fails every now and then at least here and as such I'm not surprised of comments #12, #31, #37. I'm with #29 in this and would like to know if it's possible that the module load order doesn't matter as much as whether intel_agp has settled before i915 needs it. If so, could a work-around be udevadm settle or sleep 1 between the module loads? (Specifically, I'm now testing 'install i915 /sbin/modprobe -qb intel-agp ; sleep 1 ; /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install i915 $CMDLINE_OPTS' in /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf, and at least it does no harm.) -- agpgart-intel not loaded before drm sometimes, causes KMS to fail https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/430694 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 435885] Re: "BAR 6" warnings during boot
I suppose whether it's the same bug for different BAR numbers depends on how you look at it. The suggested kernel patch disables this for BAR 6 only, reason being: "since this is BAR 6, is we have a ROM which has been mapped high, and then not unmapped. -- We shouldn't warn about not being able to allocate ROM BARs. They are often deliberately mapped outside the range of parent windows in order to disable them." On the other hand, "given that sometimes the ROM is important, it seems like an error. Really we should be smarter about re-allocating things as necessary..." Smarter re-allocation could fix this for other BAR numbers as well. Further, as I understand it, the BAR numbers are device-specific and on some devices the other BAR numbers may be ROM as well. I hope this bug gets looked at by someone who can decide what to do :-) -- "BAR 6" warnings during boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/435885 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This bug affects me too when running "apport-cli -f" when LANG=fi_FI.UTF-8. [Bug 435906] [NEW] need to turn off extra "Switchable graphics" GPU
Public bug reported: Some new laptops such as this Acer Travelmate 8371G (Timeline) have two graphics adapters (Intel 4500MHD and ATI HD 4330). There are two BIOS settings: "Switchable graphics" and "Discrete graphics". With the latter option, only the ATI GPU is in use, but with the former option, *both* GPUs are powered on by default. Neither of these options is good for battery runtime. Fortunately, someone has found a solution that turns off the discrete GPU in the switchable mode. It's a simple kernel module called "lenovo_acpi" that calls the ACPI BIOS: http://georgia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7933876#post7933876 It was originally made for Lenovo U330, in that thread it's reported to work on Acer Aspire 4810TG (Timeline) and Acer Aspire 5810TG (Timeline). On the 8371G here, "Switchable graphics" originally gave some 2 hours of battery use, "Discrete graphics" gives some 3 hours of battery use, and "Switchable graphics" with this module loaded gives some 4 hours of battery use. The module doesn't re-apply the fix after resume from hibernate, so I've had to list it in the pm-utils SUSPEND_MODULES variable. [Bug 429456] Re: [Acer TravelMate 8371] suspend/resume failure
As far as I know, nobody's able to resume Acer Timeline machines from suspend. I've just upgraded Karmic and the resume still fails with kernel linux-image-2.6.31-10-generic 2.6.31-10.35. Same symptoms started to appear here at the same time (yesterday), but the hardware is different (Intel/Intel/laptop vs. ATI/nVidia/desktop) and I run X the normal way (via gdm). I see the bug sometimes when I use the "switch user" feature (no keyboard or mouse at gdm login screen). I had a look at the logs, and the only difference to successful starts is the aforementioned line: (EE) config/hal: couldn't initialise context: unknown error (null) Once, it was preceded by: [config/dbus] couldn't take over org.x.config: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied (Connection ":1.129" is not allowed to own the service "org.x.config.display2" due to security policies in the configuration file) All I can do is kill the X with Alt+SysRq+K, but then it's pure luck whether this crashes i915 or not. ** Attachment added: "lshal.txt" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/32324376/lshal.txt -- hal error makes xorg unusable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/434721 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
