[Bug 765438] Re: On startup, the backlight is off on laptop

2013-10-13 Thread Tyler Burton
I've actually managed to "fix" this problem without the workaround by
adding "acpi_backlight=vendor" to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX of
/etc/default/grub

[Bug 765438] Re: On startup, the backlight is off on laptop

2013-10-06 Thread Tyler Burton
I have this problem with 13.04 on a Lenovo y410p (4th gen Intel + nvidia
gpu). My workaround was to add

echo 100 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

to my /etc/rc.local file but this isn't exactly an ideal solution.

"low" seems to help but the fan still runs constantly (although not at a

official ATI driver offered. Any other suggestions or workarounds?

[Bug 1098917] [NEW] Policy Tool theme does not match Web Control Panel

2013-01-12 Thread Tyler Burton
Public bug reported:

The OpenJDK Java 6 Policy Tool theme is inconsistent with the IcedTea
Web Control Panel theme. The web control panel seems to take the default
system theme, in my case GTK+, whereas the Policy Tool appears to be a
stylized version of the standard java metalic theme.

The fix should be as simple as applying the system default look and feel
setting in the Policy Tool.

[Bug 1042492] Re: Open source radeon driver causes laptop to heat up / run fan non-stop

2012-11-24 Thread Tyler Burton
Bryce, I understand that it is probably standard procedure to mark
something like this as "Wishlist" but it is honestly bad enough that I
cannot run my machine with it. This means that I am effectively stuck at
12.04 or earlier (as ATI no longer supports my card on the new version
of Xorg).

The open source driver is adequate for my needs in every other way.

[Bug 1069533] [NEW] OpenJDK with OpenGL VM flag causes SIGSEGV

2012-10-21 Thread Tyler Burton
Public bug reported:

When passing the VM argument "-Dsun.java2d.opengl=true" openjdk fails
with random SIGSEGVs. This is also a problem on openjdk-7. It also seems
to behave differently depending on hardware configuration (on an ATI
card it simply fails when the JVM quits, on nVidia is crashes randomly
with an Error Code 139).

It also happens with and without compressed oops enabled. As a bit of
background the file I am attaching comes from Linux Mint 13 *however*
this problems also exists on Ubuntu 12.04.

Without the flag graphics performance on linux is very poor.

[Bug 1043592] [NEW] Print Settings configuration is inconsistent

2012-08-29 Thread Tyler Burton
Public bug reported:

All of the icons in the system settings application launch a sub-

whatever it is you clicked on. For instance if you click on Sound it
takes you to the Sound configuration panel within gnome-control-center.

from the system settings window. This is inconsistent with the rest of
the configurable sections and should be changed to work like the others.

[Bug 1042492] [NEW] Open source radeon driver causes laptop to heat up / run fan non-stop

2012-08-27 Thread Tyler Burton
Public bug reported:

Whenever I use the open source radeon driver on my laptop the machine
heats up dramatically and as a result needs to run the fan non-stop.
This in turn causes the battery to drain quite quickly and makes the
machine almost unusable due to the heat it gives off.

When I install the proprietary driver my laptop does not have this
problem.

I am currently experiencing this problem in 12.10 Alpha 3 but it has
been an issue for a number of releases now.

[Bug 1020143] [NEW] After installing Ubuntu 12.04 my laptop touchpad randomly stops responding

2012-07-02 Thread Tyler Burton
Public bug reported:

In the past I have seen similar issues with this laptop when not turning
off the option to disable touchpad while typing, however with 12.04 this
still occurs even when that option is turned off. Essentially what
happens is the mouse (touchpad) will be working fine and then suddenly
just stop responding. Keyboard input still responds correctly. Logging
in/out does not fix the issue, a full restart seems to be required.

Please let me know if there is any additional information I can provide
to get this fixed. As you can imagine it is very frustrating/annoying

[Bug 997840] [NEW] Maximized windows still use appmenu-esque window buttons

2012-05-10 Thread Tyler Burton
Public bug reported:

As per the question I asked here
(https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+question/195447)
even after uninstalling appmenu and all related packages a maximized
window still places its close, min and max buttons in the top-left of
the screen right where appmenu used to place the menus. My understanding
is that this shouldn't be the case and that it should maintain window
decoration as per the non-maximized window. I believe this is a bug.

Please let me know if there is any more information I can provide to
help.

[Bug 875134] Re: Ubuntu 11.10 wireless crashes router

2011-10-16 Thread Tyler Burton
I did manage to find somewhat of a work around on another forum:

echo "options iwlagn 11n_disable=1" | tee /etc/modprobe.d/iwlagn.confg
sudo modprobe -rf iwlagn
sudo modprobe -v iwlagn
sudo service network-manager restart

Alternatively I've read people having success with changing the first
line to enable it.

echo "options iwlagn 11n_disable=0" | tee /etc/modprobe.d/iwlagn.confg

[Bug 875155] [NEW] Cannot reopen truecrypt after it has been closed in Unity

2011-10-15 Thread Tyler Burton
Public bug reported:

With the Unity interface when you open Truecrypt, mount a drive, and
then close the application, it does not minimize to the system tray.
Instead it completely vanishes. Then when you try and reopen the
application it displays a message saying the program is already running.
This makes it very difficult (especially for novice users) to unmount
the encrypted drive.

2011-07-01 Thread Tyler Burton
I can confirm that this still exists in 11.04.

I did find a work around for it though. Similar to what Brian wrote
above I ran:

pacat -r --latency-msec=1 -d [input] | pacat -p --latency-msec=1 -d
[output]

where [input] and [output] where the names of the audio devices shown in
paman. In my case it looked like:

pacat -r --latency-msec=1 -d alsa_input.pci-_05_02.0.analog-stereo |
pacat -p --latency-msec=1 -d alsa_output.pci-_05_02.0.analog-

[Bug 656593] [NEW] Nautilus does not let you change file ownership

2010-10-07 Thread Tyler Burton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When looking at a file's permissions in Nautilus (non-root) there is no
way to change the file ownership. While I understand the reasoning for
this I think the program would be well served with the addition of that
ability and a prompt to enter root mode to perform the action. Currently
the only way to set the file owner is to either use the terminal, or to
launch Nautilus as root.

I think that Nautilus should offer full functionality to the regular
user and simply prompt for root credentials when the action requires it
(sort of a built in sudo).

Is this something we can add?

This 'bug' exists in Ubuntu 10.04 with all recent updates.

[Bug 654322] [NEW] Power settings do not switch when A/C plugged back in

2010-10-03 Thread Tyler Burton
Public bug reported:

If you set your power settings such that they act differently when
plugged in vs when on battery the system fails to switch back and forth
when A/C power is removed and then resumed.

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu.

As far as I can tell this affects all versions of Ubuntu.

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
packagename' or by checking in Synaptic.

Not sure what package this bug would belong to

3) What you expected to happen

I expected the power settings to revert back to the A/C settings when
A/C power is restored.

4) What happened instead

They stayed locked in the "on battery" configuration.

How to test:

Create a power profile such that when on A/C there are no power savings
applied (no turning off the display, etc.). Then create an on-battery
power profile such that the machine is put in standby after a small idle
time. Remove the power briefly (a couple of seconds should more than do)
and restore power. Leave the computer idle for the time you set in the
on-battery power profile. Watch as the machine goes to standby even
though you are now on A/C (even though it shouldn't.)

[Bug 349419] Re: jockey-kde crashed with SIGSEGV in QWidget::metric() on kubuntu 9.04 startup

2010-01-27 Thread Tyler Burton
If you use jockey-text you can enable the driver without installing
jockey-gtk. Just run:

$ sudo jockey-text -u
[will update the driver list]

$ sudo jockey-text -c
[will check for new usable drivers]

$ sudo jockey-text -l
[will list all available drivers for your system]

$sudo jockey-text -e [driver]
[will enable driver for your system. for example on my machine I used 'sudo
jockey-text -e xorg:fglrx' to enable my ATI drivers]

[Bug 502363] Re: Jockey crashes when activating hardware driver

2010-01-04 Thread Tyler Burton
I should be a little bit more specific with this. I am referring to
jockey-kde. I was able to enable the driver using jockey-text but I
still cannot enable compositing.

[Bug 502363] [NEW] Jockey crashes when activating hardware driver

2010-01-02 Thread Tyler Burton
Public bug reported:

What I was doing when the application crashed:
In Kubuntu, Hardware Drivers (jockey) presents me with the correct ATI driver
for my GPU. When I click Activate it hangs, does nothing, or crashes. I have
tried restarting, or closing the application and trying again and nothing
works. I even ran it from the command line to see if it generated any output
but there was nothing.

I pulled the following from DrKonqi

Application that crashed:
Version of the application: 1.0
KDE Version: 4.3.2 (KDE 4.3.2)
Qt Version: 4.5.2
Operating System: Linux 2.6.31-16-generic x86_64
Distribution: Ubuntu 9.10

[Bug 502233] [NEW] Firefox installer fails to resize

2010-01-01 Thread Tyler Burton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kubuntu-firefox-installer

In Kubuntu 9.10: Firefox installer does not resize itself after "Show
Details" is clicked and then "Hide Details" is clicked. The window
remains sized to show the full details, even though it is not displaying
them. I expected this to return to it's original size when Hide Details
was clicked.
