[Bug 1559308] Re: Plugging HDMI screen in causes system hang
I had this issue with Ubuntu 16.04 (4.4.something). After upgrade to 16.10 (4.8.0-17-generic) issue is still reproduced. NVIDIA Corporation GM204M [GeForce GTX 970M], eDP, DP and HDMI connected. For me issue was fixed by mixing comments #77 and #24.
