[Bug 1994952] Re: mc can't properly handle filenames containing characters wider than normal

2024-09-22 Thread Yury V. Zaytsev
> how do I report a bug for the ubuntu mc package?

You already did, it is this bug.

> is it a bug in ubuntu mc package?

I don't think so. It is taken from Debian, and Debian builds against
S-Lang. They can change to ncurses, but they have other problems.
Unfortunately, there is no perfect solution, this is why we support
both.

If you really want to help, you should report to S-Lang, so that they
can upgrade to Unicode 11:

https://www.jedsoft.org/slang/mailinglists.html

And for yourself build with ncurses if you need it until then.

[Bug 2080296] [NEW] Noble not responding, stuck on Cleaning up phase, while Upgrading from 22 to 24

2024-09-10 Thread Davide V
Public bug reported:

I started upgrading from 22 to 24 and during the Cleaning up phase the
"Noble is not responding" message appeared and 100% CPU was being used.
I never closed Noble and after around 15-20 minutes (while I was just
reporting this here) it got unstuck and continued the installation. I
had to ignore the "Noble is not responding" message (clicked Wait)
several times though.

[Bug 2076752] Re: Gnome session crashes if monitor is disconnected

2024-08-14 Thread Serge V Khorev
Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your response. I have attached the journal files to this comment.
I also have in /var/crash the following files:
_usr_bin_gnome-control-center.1000.crash
_usr_bin_gnome-control-center.1000.upload
_usr_bin_gnome-control-center.1000.uploaded

Unfortunately, when I try 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-control-
center.1000.crash', in the console window I get:

Gtk-Message: 19:26:37.171: Failed to load module "xapp-gtk3-module"

And immediately there is a pop-up with an error message 'Application
Settings has closed unexpectedly'.

I did `sudo apt install libxapp-gtk3-module` and the gtk-message is
gone, but I still get the 'Application Settings has closed unexpectedly'
pop-up.

[Bug 2076752] [NEW] Gnome session crashes if monitor is disconnected

2024-08-12 Thread Serge V Khorev
Public bug reported:

Recently installed and fully updated Ubuntu 24.04

I have to switch my monitor/keyboard/mouse between two computers. Every
time when I let the screen lock time-out elapse, my desktop session
crashes and I have to log on again (but the system keeps running). As
long as the screen is not locked, I can switch back to the running
session normally.

I do not know whether my user session crashes on screen lock or on
switching the monitor back to this computer.

I use an nVidia GeForce RTX 4070 video card connected through
DisplayPort to an LG Ultrawide 40" monitor. The display server is X11.

It may or may not be relevant to this problem that quite often after the
monitor is re-awakened from sleep, some interface/window icons are
replaced with blank grey colour (i.e. minimise/maximise icons on window
bars, folder icons in Files, &c. The application window contents seem to
be intact, but entire windows (I mostly see this with FireFox) often
take a long time to be drawn, sometimes not until I hover the mouse
pointer over them.

Alright thanks so this *is* a duplicate of #2062968 and will be fixed in
Ubuntu when we release 4.8.32 and it gets imported into the
distribution. Partial fix is available in 4.8.31.

So can you confirm that with the definitions from master branch, however
you load them the problem is still present? Or if you compile from
master, it still doesn't work?

Of course it does, and I didn't ask about that.

This is not possible, you must have not overwritten the original file.
Please try the extensions file from master correctly and report back,
before any more time is spent on this.

Can you confirm that it's a duplicate of #2062968 ? If so, workaround:

sudo wget

-O /etc/mc/mc.ext.ini

Substitute @EXTHELPERSDIR@ by /usr/lib/mc/ext.d .

[Bug 2076192] Re: 24.04 Cannot add Google or Microsoft account in GOA

2024-08-08 Thread Serge V Khorev
Another addition to this report. It looks like something got out of
whack inside GOA, because this morning I saw in the Settings exclamation
marks against all but one of my accounts and when clicking on them,
there was a message asking to sign in in order to reconnect. Also no
mail was received and Evolution complained that the accounts 'do not
support prompt for credentials'.

I restarted the system, which had been running for about 3 days by then,
and after that, I was able to use all the accounts again and also to add
a Google account and a MS Personal account.

So, it seems that there was a malfunction inside GOA during the last
couple of days that gradually got worse and at the end I was not able to
access even the accounts I already had been using.

I will see how things go and add any other tips to this record,

[Bug 2076192] Re: 24.04 Cannot add Google or Microsoft account in GOA

2024-08-07 Thread Serge V Khorev
Hi Jeremy,
Thank you for your help. It has been a while that I filed a bug. I was not
aware that I can automatically submit the report. I think, now it has been
submitted.

One point that I need to add is that I already tried setting up Google
accounts on a fresh 24.04 install just after it was released. At that
time, the problem was that I could only add exactly one Google account
and no more. This is why I was using Pop_OS until now. Therefore, it
might happen that the order of adding accounts is important. I added
some IMAP/SMTP accounts first, then a WebDAV account, and then tried
adding Google and MS accounts, without success.

By the way, WebDAV account works, but I had to fiddle with the server
address a few times before it was Ok. The problem is that if there is a
problem (with WebDAV), I do not see any error message (for example, that
the address is wrong). GOA happily reports the account as added even if
it cannot access the server.

Thank you again,
Serge.

[Bug 2063263] Re: mc can't browse some tar.xz archives

2024-06-05 Thread Yury V. Zaytsev
You are right, it's a different problem. The makers of this file didn't
fully understand the concept of "file extensions".

Rename the file from "MaXX-Desktop-v2.1.1-LINUX-x64-tar.xz" to "MaXX-
Desktop-v2.1.1-LINUX-x64.tar.xz" and it will work.

We have no way of knowing that the file contains a TAR archive in other
way than by checking for correct extension:

  zaytsev@Yurys-MBP Downloads % file MaXX-Desktop-v2.1.1-LINUX-x64-tar.xz
  MaXX-Desktop-v2.1.1-LINUX-x64-tar.xz: XZ compressed data, checksum CRC64

This is why we can only detect that it's a compressed XZ file and upon
pressing Enter you are getting its contents streamed into a pager.

P.S. Before you ask to adjust the extension parser. What should we do
with the file like "wistar.xz" ? Or "pit-of-tar.xz"? They will be
wrongly treated as TAR archives otherwise which they aren't.

[Bug 129133] Re: mc uses predictable temp directory path

2024-05-27 Thread Yury V. Zaytsev
Hi Mark, thanks for the offer! However, I don't think a CVE is warranted
because I don't agree that this is a security issue:

1. The temporary directory is created with permissions that only allow
the user to read its contents. If a predictable filename is considered a
security issue, then any application that uses fixed FHS-based
directories in the user's home directory to store configuration data,
including tokens and passwords, is vulnerable.

2. The DoS argument is equally far-fetched. How about creating a large
file in the user's home directory until the entire disk is filled? Is
that a DoS attack? Well, I'm afraid 99% of systems are vulnerable.

In general, I have a strong dislike for labeling arbitrary problems as
security issues because you don't like the problem and hope it will get
fixed faster if it's "security" related. This devalues the concept of
security issues and creates noise in which problems of much higher
severity can drown.

Well, sadly none of us are paid to work on mc, so expedience is
definitively not a word that I would use to describe our development
process...

[Bug 2062968] Re: mc (Midnight commander) not opening/navigating archives by enter

2024-05-26 Thread Yury V. Zaytsev
The latest version is 4.8.31, there overwriting of mc.ext should not be
necessary. If you do overwrite it, then you also have to do the
replacements above.

The pattern says

```
Type=\(Java\ (Jar\ file|archive)\ data\ \((zip|JAR)\)
```

which should match

```
Java archive data (JAR)
```

so nothing has changed here.

I have no idea what's going on your system. Maybe you have a user
mc.ext? Did you try on a fresh user? Does entering into ZIP archives
work? What if you rename your war to zip? What if you rename a real zip
to test?

[Bug 2066081] [NEW] Nouveau failing to boot or glitches

2024-05-18 Thread Carlos V
Public bug reported:

I tried 24.04 on a Nvidia 4090 and It only booted on safe graphics mode,
I haven't had this issue with any other Ubuntu previous versions on the
same computer.

A lot of people with other NVIDIA cards are complaining about this on
YouTube, please release an URGENT ISO with a new nouveau driver and
kernel version to address this issue, if you don't do it soon you will
loose A LOT of users.

Yes, you can try to use our mc.ext instead of what comes with the
package:

https://github.com/MidnightCommander/mc/blob/master/misc/mc.ext.ini.in

In mc menu select 'Command' -> 'Edit extension file', replace the text,
save and exit the editor to notify mc of your changes.

[Bug 2062968] Re: mc (Midnight commander) not opening/navigating archives by enter

2024-04-20 Thread Yury V. Zaytsev
Unfortunately, Dmitry has just committed the patch, but hasn't pushed a
new build:

https://salsa.debian.org/debian/mc/-/commit/daeabd910de6868140272e365f755d207a986e39

... or upgraded the package to 4.8.31.

I have no upload rights in Ubuntu, but it would be nice if someone who
has could just take this commit specifically into 24.04, because it's
going to be an LTS and otherwise a pretty major part of the
functionality is going to be broken for years.

It's totally safe and a lot less work than upgrading the package...

[Bug 1975778] Re: 22.04 raspi image needs larger boot partition

2022-05-25 Thread Pablo V
I have no idea which package sets the size of the vfat partition. I
downloaded the image, wrote it to a usb3-connected dual drive (raid1)
enclosure and plugged it into a pi 4. Booted and followed the
instructions from there. I'm running mirrored 2 tb drives. If the
installer offered me the option of expanding this partition I would have
been generous and expanded it to at least 1 gigabyte

[Bug 1975778] [NEW] 22.04 raspi image needs larger boot partition

2022-05-25 Thread Pablo V
Public bug reported:

After installing updates to jammy 22.04 on my pi 4, i was getting
warning messages about the vfat partition mounted on /boot/firmware
being low on space. The updates included kernel updates. My workaround
for now is rm /boot/firmware/*.bak

Rather than muck around with gparted, I will just delete these *.bak
files after each kernel upgrade. I plan to do a fresh install with each
point release until this and some other bugs (which I will file soon)
are gone.

Whether your headset cannot be switched from HFP to A2DP is a separate
issue anyway. You can try pairing and trusting the device again, also
please check if you have pipewire audio enabled which could seldom take
over bluetooth a2dp, and see if bluetoothd log has anything related.

[Bug 1953052] Re: In Jammy sound level reset after reboot

2022-02-20 Thread Igor V. Kovalenko
Corrado, this is still not ideal - while it appears to work at the
moment, having two audio servers with their own idea of volumes would
probably cause trouble going on.

[Bug 1953052] Re: In Jammy sound level reset after reboot

2022-02-19 Thread Igor V. Kovalenko
OK that matches what we have observed elsewhere. In theory there is an
audio device reservation protocol which is obeyed by both pulseaudio and
pipewire, but in practice it looks like at least some versions of
pipewire media server component do not obey the protocol in full (i.e.
are still using control device) I cannot think of any other reason why
both pulseaudio and pipewire are using the same control device.

[Bug 1953052] Re: In Jammy sound level reset after reboot

2022-02-17 Thread Igor V. Kovalenko
Sebastien, if distribution is intended to provide pipewire function for
video only, there is no need to install audio parts. At very least
'with-pulse' 'with-jack' and other files directly or transitively
enabling 'with-audio' pipewire parts should not be installed so pipewire
media session daemon does not get hold of hardware controls.

Alternatively, if distribution is intended to provide pulseaudio
interface via pipewire, that should be properly switching pulseaudio
activation socket to pipewire-pulse, and/or disabling or uninstalling
pulseaudio daemon and maybe disabling pulseaudio autospawn in
client.conf

Do you have both pulseaudio and pipewire audio enabled simultaneously?
At least system log suggests pipewire with session manager is also being
activated, this could cause issues if both attempt to restore volumes
for some reason.

[Bug 1912935] Re: battery drain while notebook off / shutdown

2021-11-17 Thread Hemanth V. Alluri
Narrowed it down a bit.

4.19.208-1 does not exhibit any battery drain issues when sleeping sometime
before powering off.
  - 0% in 7 hours (97% -> 97%)
  - 0% in 5 hours (100% -> 100%)

5.4.150-1 does.
  - 54% in 10 hours (91% -> 37%)
  - >34% in 12 hours (34% -> Dead)

Could someone else with this problem double check my results with their
laptop?

[Bug 1912935] Re: battery drain while notebook off / shutdown

2021-11-14 Thread Hemanth V. Alluri
I ran one more test (twice) since my last comment.

Following the resolution of a StackExchange answer I found [1], I can
confirm that when I run Manjaro on Linux 4.14.248-1, even with
sleep/suspend, I don't face any heavy overnight battery drain.

==

Test 4:
  1. Boot (and wait a few seconds after signing in).
  2. Open some applications and use them a bit (firefox, yakuake, konsole,
nvim, node) - about 1 minute.
  3. Close all applications.
  4. Close the lid of my laptop to trigger sleep/suspend (I'm sure that closing
the lid does indeed cause the OS to sleep - confirmed by double checking the
corresponding setting from the system settings UI as well as from the
journalctl logs).
  5. Wait for around 10-20 seconds.
  6. Open lid and sign back in.
  7. Wait 10 seconds.
  8. shutdown and wait for 5 seconds after all of the lights have gone out
before closing the lid.

Results:
  - 2% drain (58% -> 56%) in exactly 4 hours powered off.
  - 2% drain (100% -> 98%) in exactly 17 hours and 33 minutes powered off (yes,
that's 17 (seventeen) hours - not a typo).

Conclusion:
  - We now have a "last stable" version and a "known broken" version, it's
possible for one to begin bisecting the kernel version that introduced this
issue.
  - I understand that this bug report is for Linux/Ubuntu, but seeing as to how
it's now clear that this is due to the Linux Kernel itself and not the distro,
my data should still provide some degree of value here despite it being
collected on a Linux/Manjaro.

[Bug 1912935] Re: battery drain while notebook off / shutdown

2021-11-13 Thread Hemanth V. Alluri
I've collected some more data and it seems to suggest that maybe
suspend/sleep has something to do with this?

=

Test 1:
  1. Boot (and wait a few seconds after signing in).
  2. Suspend/Sleep (using the "sleep" button from Manjaro/KDE's GUI).
  3. Wait 20 seconds.
  4. Wake from sleep.
  5. Wait 20 seconds again.
  6. Poweroff (and not the time and percentage just before doing so).
  7. Wait a few more seconds before closing the lid.

Result:
  12% drain (100% -> 88%) in exactly 2 hours powered off.
  Note: All of the data points from my previous comment were done with
Sleep/Suspend being one of the steps of my test workflow. In this new version
of the test, I test for a shorter period of time and have not opened any
applications during the test workflow.

=

Test 2:
  1. Boot (and wait a few seconds after signing in).
  2. Open some applications and use them a bit (Firefox, VS Code, Yakuake, FZF)
- about 1 or 2 minutes.
  3. Close all applications.
  4. Poweroff (and not the time and percentage just before doing so).
This time I forgot to wait a few seconds after powering off before closing the
lid (but I *did* at least wait till all the lights turned off)

Results:
  2% drain (88% -> 86%) in exactly 6 hours powered off.
  1% drain (32% -> 31%) in exactly 9 hours powered off.

Results when I don't open any applications:
  1% drain (44% -> 43%) in exactly 2 hours powered off (run 1).
  So it seems like opening applications doesn't have anything to do with this
(as expected).

=

Test 3:
(no formally described steps this time)

Results when I force powered off from my bootloader menu (currently, that's
rEFInd):
  1% drain (47% -> 46%) in exactly 2 hours powered off.

Results when I shutdown from my BIOS/UEFI menu (interrupt the boot process and
go straight to the UEFI menu):
  0% drain (100% -> 100%) in exactly 6 hours and 20 minutes powered off.

=

Conclusion:

I'm pretty sure that there's no BIOS v/s Bootloader issue here and that
the difference in the rate of battery drain is negligible. I'm also
pretty sure that as long as I don't let my laptop sleep/suspend on
Manjaro (running Linux 5.10 or Linux 5.13) it's fine.

Could this help in identifying the source of the bug?

Could someone else please conduct similar experiments so that we can
cross-validate the results? Perhaps someone on Ubuntu or some other
operating system that's *not* Manjaro (just so that we can rule out the
operating system as a variable in this)

Once again, please let me know if I can help by collecting more
data/logs/etc.

[Bug 1912935] Re: battery drain while notebook off / shutdown

2021-11-12 Thread Hemanth V. Alluri
Oh, I should mention that I faced the same issue when running Ubuntu
18.04 (DE: XFCE) last year. Sadly, I don't recall which version of the
kernel I was running - the damage to my battery ended up getting so bad
that by the end of the year, my battery lost it's capacity to hold
charge and I had to replace it (got warnings from OEM software on
Windows, as well as on boot - before the bootloader menu loaded).

[Bug 1912935] Re: battery drain while notebook off / shutdown

2021-11-12 Thread Hemanth V. Alluri
Hello. I would just like to mention that I, too, face this same exact
issue. I'm running Manjaro and can confirm that I observe this issue on
both Linux 5.10.70-1 and Linux 5.13.9-2. After a full week of testing I
can confirm that I face this power drain only when gracefully shutting
down from Linux.

Basic hardware specs:
  OS: Manjaro Linux x86_64
  Host: HP Pavilion Laptop 15-cc1xx
  Kernel: 5.10.70-1-MANJARO
  Resolution: 1920x1080
  DE: Plasma 5.22.5
  WM: KWin
  CPU: Intel i7-8550U (8) @ 4.000GHz
  GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 620
  GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 940MX

Bios: InsydeH20 f.36 Rev 5

Some timings I've recorded:
  - 44% drain in 9h20m
  - 36% drain in 6h48m
  - 32% drain in 5h35m

When sifting through the system logs using journalctl I didn't find
anything that stuck out as unusually suspicious. No errors as far as I
can tell - but honestly, I don't know enough about Linux to be 100% sure
so please don't hold me to this. I can attach these logs if needed.

Commands used:
  - journalctl -b -1 -r
  - journalctl /sbin/init -b -1 -r | grep -i shutdown
  - journalctl /sbin/init -b -1 -p err..alert

Like asgard2 I can confirm that I do not have wake-on-lan enabled (my
system doesn't support it in the first place as confirmed by the lack of
an option in my UEFI menu and no indication from ethtool), no usb ports
providing power when shutdown, no noticible power drain when shutting
down from the UEFI menu or from Windows, etc. basically everything they
have reported above.

I'd love to help get this fixed - if I can help out by providing more
data, please let me know.

[Bug 1888598] Re: Pulseaudio breaks HDMI audio on sleep/wake

2021-11-09 Thread Igor V. Kovalenko
I believe there is no defined order in which audio devices are resuming,
which makes them appear to pulseaudio in random order. This is probably
causing pulseaudio module-switch-on-connect to flip user preference to
each appearing device in same (random) order. If you do not use this
function you can disable module-switch-on-connect or use it's blacklist
to prevent your preference flipping between devices.

Pulseaudio itself is not aware of suspend/resume function. I do not know
if there is any system callback that confirms that system completed
resume sequence and everything is back (including access rights to audio
devices) so fixing this issue in full will be not a trivial task.

With pulseaudio-15.0 update you can tell pulseaudio to always select specified
profile when device appears. This also is not a complete solution, but you can
either make sure your HDMI is always off or is always using the profile with
your preferred port:
https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Notes/15.0/#cardprofilescanbesettosticky
Pavucontrol 5.0 has easy button for this, or use pactl send-message as
described in release notes.

[Bug 1774632] Re: The symbolic link /etc/resolv.conf points to the wrong file by default

2021-10-24 Thread Derek V Giroulle
Using Ubuntu 20.04.3 latest update Oct 19th

After the one but last update Oct 10th suddenly I had a problem
resolving DNS. Before the update my /etc/resolv.conf read :

nameserver 127.0.0.53

In my netmanager settings I had/have entered 2 DNS-Server IP adresses of
my ISP : 1xx.2xx.xxx.21 1xx.2xx.xxx.22

the result of command

$ ls -al /etc/resolv.conf

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 okt 13 14:10 /etc/resolv.conf ->
/run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf

So I did

$ sudo rm -f /etc/resolv.conf

$ sudo ln -s /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

Only to find it didn't change anything : the content of new
/etc/resolv.conf after restarting the systemd-resolve service still
reads

nameserver ::1

I managed to complete the updates by repeatedly saving manually an
/etc/resolv.conf file and overwriting the file written by the systemd-
resolve service (workaround). to make certain that people don't doubt my
capacity to read : I DO understand the warning at the top of the file
saying that the file is overwritten regularly.

I manage to maintain a "usable connection" by regularly overwriting the
file /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf,  with following content

nameserver 1xx.2xx.xxx.21

nameserver 1xx.2xx.xxx.22

until i restart the systemd-resolve service and the file is overwritten
by resolve and it reverts to

nameserver ::1

I also checked the /run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf file which has
the following content

nameserver 127.0.0.53
options edns0 trust-ad

My question is :

A- How can I make sure that the resolve service writes the correct file
content in /etc/resolv.conf = I do understand that this is a sym-link

B- Where is the parameter file that systemd-resolve uses to produce
/etc/resolv.conf and /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf, because it sure
doesn't read the configuration entered in netmanager settings

>  nameserver 19*.2*8.*.21
>  nameserver 19*.2*8.*.22
my internet connection temporarily works

The /run/systemd/resolve/resolve.conf contains
> nameserver ::1

I tried overwriting /run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf with the correct
nameservers and
then  applied your solution :
$ sudo rm -f /etc/resolv.conf
$ sudo ln -s /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

And restarted the systemd-resolve  service

and the /etc/resolv.conf and /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf files
showed again

> nameserver ::1

Your solution doesn't work

Bug 135636 is similar to this bug where many unrelated tickets are
dumped into a decades old open wontfix ticket. Have you fixed or are
you planning on fixing PGP? Once these political bugs are addressed,
I'm sure the OS distros will drop TB for BB.

[Bug 1945235] Re: pulseaudio crashed with SIGABRT in pa_bluetooth_transport_put() from transport_put() from hfp_rfcomm_handle()

2021-09-28 Thread Igor V. Kovalenko
This could be a problem in pulseaudio native backend, provoked by
numerous reconnections between bluez and headset.

If verbose log from pulseaudio daemon can be collected for this crash, I
think it is worth to file an issue in pulseaudio tracker here
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/-/issues/ with
verbose log attached.

[Bug 1065126]

2021-09-22 Thread Bob-nelson-v
This bug isn’t an enhancement and it’s never getting fixed so it should
be closed as WONTFIX instead of leaving it open for 13 years.

Add this defect to list of pull requests for when FF is forked to a more
community version.

[Bug 1927211] [NEW] After latest update screen randomly flickers

2021-05-05 Thread Phil v
Public bug reported:

After the most recent automatic update, my screen will flicker randomly.
This is not screen tearing but a random, arbitrary flicker/tearing that
gets worse when i use calculator, terminal and firefox. It is
particularly bad when using firefox. It's reasonably stable when using
google chrome.

Unfortunately, the issue was fixed only in 3.12 and 3.10.2 is still affected.

Can we please have the following patch back-ported for 18.04.5 updates
https://gitlab.kitware.com/cmake/cmake/-/commit/ac5731a7e380349f19dc319e6c31e189b5faba93

I've checked that the patch can be applied clearly on top of the 3.10.2,
it is simple and self-consistent, so I don't expect that it will break
something else.

I've also verified that the patch indeed fixes the issue for me. Since
the patch affects only CMake module and don't requires cmake rebuild it
was simple enough.
