[Bug 1958827] [NEW] podman-docker socket does not allow access for the docker group

2022-01-23 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

I installed podman-docker which essentially symlinks /run/docker.sock ->
/run/podman/podman.sock . In normal Docker (docker.io) installation, the
socket is accessible by the "docker" group, the podman-docker socket is
not (/run/podman/podman.sock is root:root). This does not break the
"docker" command (as it is just a wrapper around podman) but does break
tools which connect to the docker socket directly, such as docker-
compose (meaning docker-compose has to be run as root). I don't know
what the solution is, but it should be at least documented.

Running docker-compose:

docker-compose -f container.yml up --build --remove-orphans

[Bug 1958348] [NEW] can't set wallpaper to solid color

2022-01-18 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

When right-clicking on the desktop > Configure Desktop and Wallpaper >
Wallpaper, there is no choice to set it to solid color. There is Picture
of the Day, Slideshow, Haenau (???), Image, Hunyango (???) but nothing
allowing me to put the desktop all-back. So it is all fancy but
impossible to set plain color.

I can work around it by creating 1x1 black pixel png (add it centered
and have the rest of the desktop filled with black, or just stretch it
to the entire desktop).

[Bug 1862584] [NEW] arcanist should depend on php-cli

2020-02-09 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

After installing the arcanist package, arc replies with the following:

   PHP CONFIGURATION ERRORS

   You need to install the cURL PHP extension, with 'apt-get install
php-curl'.

The message is

(1) misleading, as the suggested fix does not help; and

(2) such issue should be handled by package dependencies.

The fix is described e.g. https://davcri.github.io/posts/ubuntu-upgrade-
arcanist-fix/how-to-fix-arcanist-not-working/ and consists in installing
the php-cli package (verified bu yours truly).

Please add php-cli to arcanist Depends.

I am running bionic 18.04 LTS (up-to-date) and arcanist version is
0~git20170812-1.

Confirming this. After some experiments of installing various icons
packs, I found the only solution to run under desktop-plasma session (as
opposed or Unity or Ubuntu). Maybe someone can guess the cause better?

[Bug 1762378] [NEW] All binaries crash with symbol lookup error

As per https://www.mail-archive.com/debian-

with libossim, which was already rebuilt in Debian to fix the issue

Please pull the change over to bionic before release, the package is

[Bug 1694939] [NEW] vlna: does not behave correctly with some utf-8 input

2017-06-01 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

The vlna program is supposed to put non-breakable space after non-
syllabic prepositions (for czech/slovak typestting with TeX). It does
not detect some of the cases (and the documentation does not mention
that) due to simplified word parsing:

* "v lese" is correctly transformed to "v~lese"
* "„v lese“" should have the ~ inserted, however, is left unchanged, presumably
because the „ character is not recognized as non-word, thus the "v" is not
recognized as standalone word.

This problem should be at least documented in the manpage, or, in the
better case, fixed in the code.

[Bug 1557956] [NEW] Should warn hyphenation for document language is not installed (and the document uses it)

2016-03-16 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

Opening a document which had active hyphenation (different installation
of LO) on a machine where LO lacks relevant hyphenation packages results
in substantial changes in formatting -- usually larger interword-spaces
and paragraphs taking more lines than they did before. There is no hint
that hyphenation for that particular language is not available; unless
the user gives detailed look to discover no hyphenation at all, he/she
may quickly come to the conclusion that the document or LO installation
is "broken".

Writer should show some (non-intrusive) message that hyphenation for the
language is not available and what should be done to activate it.

[Bug 1556997] [NEW] JAVA_HOME auto-detection fails due to whitespace in update-java-alternatives output

2016-03-14 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

Running imagej fails with the following message:

   Open other images in this ImageJ panel as follows:
 imagej -p 3  [ ... ]

   No JVM found to run ImageJ
   Please apt-get install a JVM to run ImageJ or
   set JAVA_HOME if it's not a JVM from a Debian Package.

even though multiple JVM's are installed here.

The problem is that the /usr/bin/imagej script detects JAVA_HOME using

   JAVA_HOME=$(/usr/sbin/update-java-alternatives -l | grep openjdk |
sort | tail -1 | cut -d' ' -f 3)

which is empty as the output of update-java-alternatives -l is (note
multiple spaces between columns):

java-1.6.0-openjdk-amd64   1061   /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-amd64
java-1.7.0-openjdk-amd64   1071   /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.7.0-openjdk-amd64
java-1.8.0-openjdk-amd64   1081   /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.8.0-openjdk-amd64

and cut -d' ' -f3 selects space. The solution is to squeeze multiple
spaces before running cut, so the line should read:

   JAVA_HOME=$(/usr/sbin/update-java-alternatives -l | grep openjdk |
sort | tail -1 | tr -s ' ' | cut -d' ' -f 3)

which then gives the correct output (/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.8.0-openjdk-
amd64 in my case) and makes imagej run as expected.

[Bug 589485] Re: Ignores physical display size and calculates based on 96DPI

2016-02-05 Thread Václav Šmilauer
@Sergio, sorry but your comments are OT. Different resolutions for
different screens are not supported on the toolkit level; a window can
be on both screens at once and such, and it is beyond the scope of this
bug. Viewing distance again has nothing to do with this bug; DPI does
not depend on the viewing distance, it simply expresses physical
dimensions (lengths) of one pixel; length does not depend on distance (I
am a physicist, I know that one for sure). Of course for guessing
comfortable font size for reading, viewing distance is important, but
that is an entirely different problem, although it actually required a
valid value of DPI.

2016-02-05 Thread Václav Šmilauer
There is 62 people who think this bug *is* important. It is a problem
mainly with displays of which DPI is far from 96x96, such as more and
more common HiDPI.

Let's not turn it into discussion forum on Linux vs. Windows, or ideal
state of Linux. We simply want Xorg to respect the DPI reported by EDID.

[Bug 1512606] Re: Display size incorreectly detected (assuming 96x96 DPI)

2016-02-04 Thread Václav Šmilauer
@Timo: what you say is GTK-only setting (e.g. not Firefox and
Thunderbird, not Qt programs), plus Xorg will still report wrong DPI,
which is a crucial information e.g. for GIMP (so that it can know how is
stuff physically scaled) and such. I don't want to scale things, I want
xorg to not lie about the DPI. Come on, in 2016, out-of-the box
installation should look right on non-exotic hardware without tinkering;
and in this case, tinkering is not even possible in a consistent manner.

[Bug 1512606] [NEW] Display size incorreectly detected (assuming 96x96 DPI)

2015-11-03 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

I am running 14.10 on Lenovo Yoga 12 with 280x160mm panel with 1920x1080
resolution, which translates to 174x171 DPI by trivial calculation. The
panel size is correctly reported by edid:

$ get-edid | parse-edid
This is read-edid version 3.0.2. Prepare for some fun.

The XServer thinks something different:

$ xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
screen #0:
  dimensions:1920x1080 pixels (508x285 millimeters)
  resolution:96x96 dots per inch

where the physical size is garbage. The driver sets DPI to 96 despite
having correct data, and there seems to be no straightforward way to
force a different DPI (see e.g. [1]). The internet is full of various
workarounds for HiDPI displays, which include setting text-scaling-
factor in dconf (gnome-only) , layout.css.devPixelsPerPt (mozilla
products), scaling-factor (integer values only?), all of the toolkit- or
program-specific. They have all of them some gotchas (such as terribly-
looking interface, different scaling of some text, ugly icons etc).

I am willing to help debugging the driver, since Ubuntu should have a
way to behave well out-of-box on HiDPI configurations. If the driver
reports the right DPI, I assume many of those issue would disappear.

2015-04-21 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Oh, I did not at first see that the bugreport is related to eatmydata.
libeatmydata changed the .so localtion between utopic and vivid (from
/usr/lib to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu), but the LD_PRELOAD was set only
once before starting aptitutde (sudo eatmydata aptitude) and hence was
pointing to the old .so which ceased to exist after the package upgrade.
Sorry for the noise. So I think this bugreport is invalid, unless this
special transition should be handled specially.

[Bug 152279] Re: Totem gets aspect ratio wrong

For me, the bug is definitely present also with gst-launch-0.10 playbin,
using 3 pivoted monitors, with 14.04LTS. Smplayer gets the aspect ratio
right (make your life better and ditch totem). This bug is 8 years old.

[Bug 1397911] [NEW] mountnfs source /lib/init/mount-functions.sh which has been removed from the package

2014-12-01 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

In up-to-date 14.04 LTS, I see that the script /etc/network/if-
up.d/mountnfs sources /lib/init/mount-functions.sh (line 14). This file
is not present the current initscripts version (2.88dsf-41ubuntu6)
though debian's 2.88dsf-13.1+squeeze1
(https://packages.debian.org/squeeze/amd64/initscripts/filelist) lists
this file.

This bug is similar to #432029 which has been closed already 2.5 years
ago, so I am opening a separate report.

[Bug 1397911] Re: mountnfs source /lib/init/mount-functions.sh which has been removed from the package

2014-12-01 Thread Václav Šmilauer
I definitely have not created that script myself (unless some 3rd party
installer did that??) and the first system installed on this machine was
IIRC 10.04 LTS. Having initscripts=2.88dfs-41ubuntu6 installed, I am
getting this:

$ dlocate mountnfs
initscripts: /etc/init.d/umountnfs.sh
initscripts: /etc/network/if-up.d/mountnfs
initscripts: /etc/init.d/mountnfs.sh
initscripts: /etc/init.d/mountnfs-bootclean.sh
mountall: /etc/init/mountnfs.sh.conf
mountall: /etc/init/mountnfs-bootclean.sh.conf

$ dpkg -L initscripts

/etc/init.d/mtab.sh
/etc/init.d/mountnfs.sh

According to the wiki page about bug status you mentioned: Be sure to

[Bug 1281084] Re: UnicodeDecodeError in is_closing_session

2014-08-29 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Just looking at the approt source, in is_closing_session, the error is
here:

with open('/proc/%s/environ' % pid) as e:
env = e.read().split('\0')

This is normally not a problem with python3, but apport runs for some
reason with the ascii encoding, which will fail when reading utf-8
encoded environment variable (in my case, it is DEBFULLNAME=Václav
Šmilauer). So the fix is perhaps

with open('/proc/%s/environ' % pid, encoding='utf-8') as e:
env = e.read().split('\0')

(that's what I did locally) or open the file with 'rb' and work on bytes
object rather than str.

[Bug 1362326] [NEW] LCD panel sometimes says No signal and is blank, the driver thinks it is active

2014-08-27 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

I have 3 LCD panels attached via straight DisplayPort cables (no daisy
chaining, no DVI-DP converters and so on) to the FirePro V7900, which
has 4 DisplayPort sockets.

One of the panels will often not come up when screens are DPMS-suspended
(xset dpms force off, or by the screensaver). The panel will then say
No signal, but the card still thinks it is enabled and working (as
verified in AMDCCCLE). It is sometimes possible make it work again by
cycling a few times xset dpms force off and then pressing a key to
turn screens on. It is always the same panel which has troubles, but it
is port-bound (I tried exchaning the screens physically; it is the port
numbered 3 in amdcccle, the other two being 1 and 2), not screen-
bound. Sometimes the screen also just flickers, showing what it should
only intermittently.

Restarting X fixes the issue (but terminates the session) most the time.

The open-source driver does not suffer from this issue at all.

The fglrx driver has had this issue since as long as I remember (2 or 3
years).

[Bug 1349866] Re: display blank after resume (consistent)

2014-08-24 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Confirmed as per duplicate report #1350910; as suggested there, I
flashed new BIOS to F.28 without any improvement; the changelog [1] does
not mention anything display-related either. (The flash BIOS utility can
be run in Windows (on any computer) to create USB flash, which can be
used in the Linux machine to update the BIOS, without depending on the
OS.)

I confirm that installing fglrx or fglrx-updates (which was previously,
when trusty first came, freezing the system at boot-time IIRC) works
around the issue.

[Bug 1349866] [NEW] display blank after resume (consistent)

2014-07-29 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

With the hardware as shown in automatically attached files (HP ProBook
455), display never recovers from resume, although the computer works
fine otherwise (it can be connected to over ssh, in particular). I
disabled the discrete GPU BIOS (that is the current stand) but the
problem remains. Contrary to #1010683, where some people were helped by
using pm-suspend --quirk-test --quirk-s3-mode, this problem is
exhibited without discrete graphics (thus ruling out problems with
vgaswitcheroo).

[Bug 1294044] Re: Network manager fails to connect to WiFi

2014-06-30 Thread Václav Šmilauer
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1311257 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1311257

The fix (11n_disable) did not work in the end; the problem is in
wpa_supplicant, which must be killed after resume, as #1311257 suggests.
That fixed the problem, so I mark this as dupe.

[Bug 1294044] Re: Network manager fails to connect to WiFi

2014-06-26 Thread Václav Šmilauer
I was able to work around the problem by adding

   options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

to /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi-disable-80211n-local.conf

Can any of you test that?

Thanks to http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/wlan-faellt-sporadisch-aus/
for the hint.

[Bug 1312184] Re: X error when running synergy in client mode

2014-06-10 Thread Václav Šmilauer
I resolved the issue by installing all *mir* packages -- I noticed in ps
-A that Xorg was run with some mir option. After uninstalling all
libraries related to mir, everything works smoothly again. (Keyboard lag
was also resolved by that, which is not a part of this bugreport).

This report should be kept open (perhaps re-assigned to mir) until it is
resolved properly, though.

[Bug 958520] Re: [Toshiba Satellite LD350-11S] Suspend on lid close works only after one manual suspend

2014-06-01 Thread Václav Šmilauer
As for me, the bug is still present in 14.04., after BIOS upgrade to the
latest (2009) version 1.80-WIN for my model (Satellite L300D PSLC8E,
apparently a EU-only model).

It is not only the lid close, but also FN keys which magically start
working after the first suspend.

[Bug 1273739] Re: usb-creator-gtk does not work: Installation Failed

2014-03-31 Thread Václav Šmilauer
I had the same issue, the problem was that the localized name of the
Downloads folder contained non-ascii characters (Stažené). As
workaround, move the .iso to /tmp or ~ (if that one is ascii-clean) and
select it using the other button.

If it fails nevertheless , you are having another issue than me.

[Bug 1294044] Re: Network manager fails to connect to WiFi

2014-03-30 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Re-opening; the symtpoms disappeared for the first time after installing
unity8 (with indicator-network), which also caused both network
indicators (NetworkManager and indicator-network) to appear in the
systray when using the default Unity session (and interact if weird
ways) - but wifi was connecting to just right.

After de-installation of unity8, there is just the NetworkManager icon
in Unity (default) session again, and NM does not connect to wifi
anymore.

Please check interactions of indicator-network with the upstream
network-manager applet.

Confirming this is *not* a pure driver issue, as I can connect to an
encrypted wifi using wicd.

[Bug 1294044] [NEW] Network manager fails to connect to WiFi

2014-03-18 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

Since I updated to trusty a few days ago, NetworkManager fails to
connect to a wifi (I tried several wifis, all failed - all of them were
encrypted with WPA2, not sure if that might make the difference). Wired
network works just fine. The Wifi used to work flawlessly, getting
connected within a few seconds.

The wireless is

02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N

When I do sudo stop network-manager and then sudo NetworkManager
--no-daemon --log-level=INFO --log-domain=WIFI,SUPPLICANT, I am getting
the following (skipping initial logs of reading connections and of the
wired NIC DHCP etc):

[Bug 1294052] [NEW] Unlock screen shown twice (violet and black) after resume from sleep

2014-03-18 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

After waking the computer from suspend, there is

1. The screen saying: This session is locked / You will be redirected ...
for about a second, followed by a split second of the framebuffer console.
2. Violet login screen, where I am asked to type my password (which I do)
3. Again shortly the This session is locked screen
4. For about half a second, the desktop (in the state it was locked) appears on
the screen
5. Another login screen, black, asks me to type the password (which I do)
6. The session appears and is usable afterwards.

I expect the password prompt to be shown *at most* once, not twice, to
unlock the session.

This is a regression from saucy, where I was typing the password either
once, or was even able to disable the lock in dconf/gconf (don't
remember exactly where).

[Bug 1294056] [NEW] Systray icon shows no menu

2014-03-18 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

I enabled the Enable systray icon in Setup/Misc. The icon appears just
fine, it stays there when I close the main QJackCtl windows.

When I click the systray icon, it reacts by showing a sunken border of
the icon, but no menu appears below it. When I close the main QJackCtl
windows, a notification appears saying Information - JACK Audio
Connection Kit. The program will keep running in the system tray. To
termina the program, please choose Quit in the context menu of the
system tray icon. There is no context meny of that icon appearing.

Other systray programs (skype, quicksynergy) show their menus withou any
problem.

[Bug 1071239] [NEW] cl.hpp always wraps functions from cl.h which are only declared with feature macros

2012-10-25 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

CL/cl.hpp declares wrappers around functions from CL/cl.h. Some of those
functions are only declared when some feature macros are #defined.

For example, CL/cl.hpp: 1603:

static inline cl_int
UnloadCompiler()
{
return ::clUnloadCompiler();
}

but CL/cl.h:1192 declared ::clUnloadCompiler only when
CL_USE_DEPRECATED_OPENCL_1_1_APIS is #defined:

#ifdef CL_USE_DEPRECATED_OPENCL_1_1_APIS
/* ... */
extern CL_API_ENTRY cl_int CL_API_CALL
clUnloadCompiler(void) CL_EXT_SUFFIX__VERSION_1_1_DEPRECATED;
/* ... */
#endif

This is the result of compiling the CL/cl.hpp header directly:

$ g++ -x c++ /usr/include/CL/cl.hpp
/usr/include/CL/cl.hpp: In function ‘cl_int cl::UnloadCompiler()’:
/usr/include/CL/cl.hpp:1606:12: error: ‘::clUnloadCompiler’ has not been
declared
/usr/include/CL/cl.hpp: In constructor ‘cl::Image2D::Image2D(const

[Bug 1071239] Re: cl.hpp always wraps functions from cl.h which are only declared with CL_USE_DEPRECATED_OPENCL_1_1_APIS

2012-10-25 Thread Václav Šmilauer
** Summary changed:

- cl.hpp always wraps functions from cl.h which are only declared with feature
macros
+ cl.hpp always wraps functions from cl.h which are only declared with
CL_USE_DEPRECATED_OPENCL_1_1_APIS

** Description changed:

  CL/cl.hpp declares wrappers around functions from CL/cl.h. Some of those
- functions are only declared when some feature macros are #defined.
+ functions are only declared when CL_USE_DEPRECATED_OPENCL_1_1_APIS is
+ #defined.

  For example, CL/cl.hpp: 1603:

  static inline cl_int
  UnloadCompiler()
  {
  return ::clUnloadCompiler();
  }

- but CL/cl.h:1192 declared ::clUnloadCompiler only when
- CL_USE_DEPRECATED_OPENCL_1_1_APIS is #defined:
+ but CL/cl.h:1192 declareds ::clUnloadCompiler:

  #ifdef CL_USE_DEPRECATED_OPENCL_1_1_APIS
  /* ... */
  extern CL_API_ENTRY cl_int CL_API_CALL
  clUnloadCompiler(void) CL_EXT_SUFFIX__VERSION_1_1_DEPRECATED;
  /* ... */
  #endif

  This is the result of compiling the CL/cl.hpp header directly:

  $ g++ -x c++ /usr/include/CL/cl.hpp
  /usr/include/CL/cl.hpp: In function ‘cl_int cl::UnloadCompiler()’:
  /usr/include/CL/cl.hpp:1606:12: error: ‘::clUnloadCompiler’ has not been

[Bug 1071389] [NEW] nvidia-current conflicts with fglrx (both cards present)

2012-10-25 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

I have primary AMD FirePro GPU for graphics and a secondary headless
nVidia GTX 560Ti for OpenCL. In Ubuntu 12.04, it was possible to install
both nvidia-current and fglrx alongside, and after adjusting alternatves
for libGL.so, Xorg would happily use the first card, and nVidia was
available for OpenCL computations.

Since quantal, nvidia-current is conflicting with fglrx. While I can
imagine this is intentional (most users won't ever need to install
both), it is nevertheless a packaging bug.

Please provide at least a workaround on how to install both drivers
simultaneously.

Version informations attached automatically (I hope).

[Bug 996205] Re: 8086:4232 Networking stops working after resume in 12.04

2012-09-13 Thread Václav Šmilauer
I am experiencing similar problem with 8086:4239 (Intel Corporation
Centrino Advanced-N 6200 (rev 35)). After resume (only with some APs,
though), connection is established, but no packet goes through. I
disable wireless in nm-applet, then re-enable; after the next connect,
everything works. Is it the same problem?

[Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100

2012-09-01 Thread Václav Šmilauer
This bug is still present at Mivvy M310 in 12.04. I am not sure which of
the packages should be re-opened. I confirm that the workaround in #344
fixes the issue temporarily.

2012-08-29 Thread Václav Šmilauer
@Holm: patches much appreciated. Last hunk (for_each_possible_cpu)
from the firegl patch was meanwhile integrated upstream (version 12-8
downloaded today from ati site) and will not apply.

Perhaps the xorg-edgers guys might be interested in putting those
patches to the fglrx-installer packages?

[Bug 1043328] [NEW] corrupt screen in terminal (KMS) and in gnome

2012-08-29 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

Using fresh dev quantal installation, I am seeing corruption of the
screen making the computer unusable. The terminal gets first set to
correct mode, but later, vertical stripes appear (screenshot will be
attached). When launching lightdm, there are inclined horizontal lines
superimposed over whatever is on the desktop (screenshot attached).

[Bug 1002323] [NEW] multihead: login prompt does not appear on the screen where mouse cursor is until it moves

2012-05-21 Thread Václav Šmilauer
Public bug reported:

I have a tri-head setup. The login prompt (for enering
username/password) appears on the leftmost screen, even though the
cursor is placed in the middle screen at the start.

Ldm tracks mouse movements as to display the login at the screen where
the mouse is, but this does not happen until the mouse moves. As soon as
the cursor moves (even by a pixel), ldm detects that and places the
login onto the middle screen.

Ldm should find cursor position at the very start and put the login on
the appropriate screen right away.
