I have this problem too - I am using Arch linux, and have had the same problem as far back as I can remember. Another change is that after it starts OK, the screen is dimmed so much that is turned off (my laptop has such feature to turn off the backlight). No problems with classic desktop (gnome panel) and now for 2-3 weeks I am running Gnome3 Shell, no problems at all! Before switching to Gnome Shell, Unity behaviour was a bit buggy, sometimes not working at all (like mentioned) and sometimes I had to redo the change of monitor configuration several times until it worked. For example: 1. plug second monitor to laptop 2. unity shows buggy placement of tray on the monitor 3. switch of second monitor from Monitors applet 4. switch on mirroring 5. switch off mirroring 6. switch on extend to screen 7. switch off extend to screen ... Repeat 4-7 several times until it finally worked. Until the next reboot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/661450 Title: Support for multiple monitors broken -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have HP Pavilion dm4t (Intel + ATI 5470HD hybrid) and sometimes xrandr shows the connected screens as: - LVDS1 and VGA1 nowadays as: - LVDS2 and VGA2 and today i managed to switch to ATI and restart X and then xrandr showed the screens as: - LVDS-2 and VGA-2 Maybe the problem is also related to this behavior. I have included a screenshot what it looks like when I plug in a bigger display. You can see that the screen is split in two parts. This happens because one screen is 1366x768 and the other is 1680x1050. So the split happens on exactly 1366 and unity menu is shown in the middle of the larger display. You can drag windows above it (as shown). ** Attachment added: "IMG_4087.JPG" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/661450/+attachment/1893046/+files/IMG_4087.JPG -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/661450 Title: Support for multiple monitors broken -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 726892] [NEW] screen split in half when in unity and I plug in a external monitor
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg HP Pavilion dm4t-1100 I5 460M CPU Intel + ATI 5470HD When running under Unity and I plugin a second monitor the screen is split in half horizontally. The top part shows parts of windows, the bottom shows normal picture but what should be on the top. If using Gnome, everything is fine. I have xrandr script like this: #!/bin/sh xrandr --output LVDS1 --off --output VGA1 --mode 1680x1050 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal This works perfectly in Gnome, but in Unity it switches to 1027x768 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04 Package: xorg 1:7.6~3ubuntu8 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-5.32-generic 2.6.38-rc6 Uname: Linux 2.6.38-5-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: wl Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: [core, bailer, detection, composite, opengl, decor, mousepoll, vpswitch, regex, animation, snap, expo, move, compiztoolbox, place, grid, imgpng, gnomecompat, wall, ezoom, workarounds, staticswitcher, resize, fade, unitymtgrabhandles, scale, session, unityshell] CompositorRunning: compiz DRM.card0.LVDS.1: status: connected enabled: enabled dpms: On modes: 1366x768 1366x768 edid-base64: AP///wAGrzwiAAAUAQSQHxF4Apf1m1lUjCUiUFQBAQEBAQEBAQEBAQEBAQEBEhtWRlAAIzAmFjYANa0QAAAYDBJWRlAAIzAmFjYANa0QAAAYAgAMM/kKPGQfFCJuICAgAH0= DRM.card0.VGA.1: status: disconnected enabled: disabled dpms: Off modes: edid-base64: DRM.card1.HDMI.A.1: status: disconnected enabled: disabled dpms: On modes: edid-base64: DRM.card1.LVDS.2: status: connected enabled: enabled dpms: On modes: 1366x768 1280x720 1152x768 1024x768 800x600 848x480 720x480 640x480 edid-base64: DRM.card1.VGA.2: status: disconnected enabled: disabled dpms: On modes: edid-base64: Date: Tue Mar 1 01:22:02 2011 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: natty DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: bcmwl, 5.100.82.38+bdcom, 2.6.38-5-generic, x86_64: installed bcmwl, 5.100.82.38+bdcom, 2.6.38-1-generic, x86_64: installed GraphicsCard: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0046] (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:1603] ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series] [1002:68e0] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:1603] InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" - Alpha amd64 (20110202) MachineType: Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion dm4 Notebook PC ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE=en_US:en LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-5-generic root=UUID=c0f3cbfa-472c-4519-a51f-00b3200315ed ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 Renderer: Unknown SourcePackage: xorg Symptom: display UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) dmi.bios.date: 10/21/2010 dmi.bios.vendor: Hewlett-Packard dmi.bios.version: F.23 dmi.board.asset.tag: Base Board Asset Tag dmi.board.name: 1603 dmi.board.vendor: Hewlett-Packard dmi.board.version: 58.27 dmi.chassis.asset.tag: CNU04620Q6 dmi.chassis.type: 10 dmi.chassis.vendor: Hewlett-Packard dmi.chassis.version: Chassis Version dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnHewlett-Packard:bvrF.23:bd10/21/2010:svnHewlett-Packard:pnHPPaviliondm4NotebookPC:pvr058B11242B1020100:rvnHewlett-Packard:rn1603:rvr58.27:cvnHewlett-Packard:ct10:cvrChassisVersion: dmi.product.name: HP Pavilion dm4 Notebook PC dmi.product.version: 058B11242B1020100 dmi.sys.vendor: Hewlett-Packard version.compiz: compiz 1:0.9.4-0ubuntu2 version.libdrm2: libdrm2 2.4.23-1ubuntu3 version.libgl1-mesa-glx: libgl1-mesa-glx 7.10.1~git20110215.cc1636b6-0ubuntu2 version.xserver-xorg: xserver-xorg 1:7.6~3ubuntu8 version.xserver-xorg-video-ati: xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.14.0-0ubuntu2 version.xserver-xorg-video-intel: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.14.0-1ubuntu11 version.xserver-xorg-video-nouveau: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:0.0.16+git20110107+b795ca6e-0ubuntu5 ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug compiz-0.9 natty running-unity ubuntu -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/726892 Title: screen split in half when in unity and I plug in a external monitor -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

If it has something to do with that I also have a hybrid laptop - Intel HD (i5 cpu) and ATI 5470. It is not possible to switch off either in the bios since HP has blocked the switching option. I too experience random crashes from various indicators, screensaver etc. The setup is much more stable when I use Classic Desktop (Gnome) instead of Unity. In fact nothing has crashed for more than 10 hours now. [Bug 616488] [NEW] dialog boxes and panels on second monitor are not shown properly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org I have Ubuntu 10.04 updated regularly on a HP nw8240 notebook with ATI FireGL V5000. I am using opensource radeon driver. Work in a dualmonitor configuration 90% of the time. When Openoffice is on the external monitor (second monitor) and I open some dialog box, not every text label is shown, some components are not drawn fully and it is impossible change the parameters in the dialog box. If I move the dialog box to the built-in monitor screen it still shown as garbage but after going to other tab or hovering over it with the mouse it will partly redraw and show as it was intented. If the dialog box opens directly on the built-in monitor than it is all ok temporarily, if I move it to the secondary monitor and forge it to repaint parts it will not be ok againt. This happens both with the Openoffice package from Ubuntu repositories and also with manually installed deb packages of openoffice 3.3 beta from the openoffice.org site. The situation got even worse with the 3.3 beta, and where the regular ubuntu provided openoffice had only problems with some text and button labels, the dialogs in the 3.3 beta are almost completely unreadable. I will attach a screenshot. Other applications do not have this problem (for example Thunderbird, Firefox, GIMP, Eclipse,...) [Bug 551418] Re: Youtube videos barely run. Have sound, beyond choppy video.
In my case this turned out to be due to the fact that the open source radeon driver did not work and accelerate to the highest extent, and my machine is not supported on the latest ATI drivers, whereas the older ATI drivers do not support the new kernel and both can't be installed and used at all. glxgears was running at arround 150 FPS I solved or better say helped this issue from being unbareable to becoming usable, by using xorg-edgers software update repository now glxgears runs at 1560 FPS and flash works ok. Graphics is still not up to the speed i had when using Windows XP and Windows 7, but it is much much better. Browser is still slugish on web sites with many flash regions, on such sites it seems 2-3 times slower than under windows, but it is not a huge problem now -- Youtube videos barely run. [Bug 562996] Re: multiple undo-redo skips steps when using track changes
Well, first, in this case we have a rule not to use any styles so we definitely dont have heading styles. We don't use Second, the situation I am trying to describe is more like undo does not undo some actions at all. It is more like this - you have two paragraphs and a table between, you make some changes in the first paragraphs, make changes in the table, then make changes in the last paragraph and start undoing, so the changes in the paragraphs are undone, but the changes in the table are not. I was not able to reproduce it in any way, but such a behaviour happened 2-3 times before I submitted the bug report. Being a software engineer I know it's almost impossible to find a bug with such a vague description and no possibility to reproduce it, but I filed it in case another one experiences similar behaviour. -- multiple undo-redo skips steps when using track changes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 562996] Re: multiple undo-redo skips steps when using track changes
I was working on a revision of a book > 1000 pages, with literally dozen of thousands of corrections with mainly tracked changes. This was so large and so slow even with shown changes that it was unmanageble even after just few pages so I had to split the book in parts of 30-50 pages. But this is expected behaviour so it does not matter. Previously I have only used "track changes" a couple of times in rather small ammounts (<20 changes per document) and have seen no problems at all. The point is that it is a huge effort and I have seen it only a couple of times so I don't know if I am going to be able to reproduce it, and I am bound by a legal agreement so I cannot share the document where it happened. The text was a plain text with not intentional usage of styles and formatting, no pictures and only occasional tables. But, I think that the last time this happed was when making correction within a table, adding lines, deleting lines, going to the text editing the text outside the table and then undo and I think that the undo did not undo the changes to the table, just to the main text. I cannot even recall correctly now because after my first report I have gone thru 400 pages and I didn't have similar problem. -- multiple undo-redo skips steps when using track changes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 562996] [NEW] multiple undo-redo skips steps when using track changes
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org I am editing a document with track changes enabled. Sometimes when I hit redo for several times, some of the changes I have made are skipped and are not undone, and the undo goes one step before them. Redo and then undo again does not fix this - has the same problem. For example if I change some paragraph and put A, and change another and put B, and change another and put C. If I hit undo twice I would expect that C is removed and then B is removed and I am left with A. But sometimes, only B is removed while A and C are still standing. This is a too simple example, and probably cannot be reproduced but I have seen similar behaviour many times in texts of size 20-30 pages and with many (dozens or even hundreds tracked changes). I have noticed this also under Windows.
