[Bug 156177] Re: offer to create a separate /home partition
I think it's a very good idea. There are a few blueprints on Launchpad about it. Compare: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/home-partition-integration-with-installer https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/install-with-separate-home But I would add another remark: When you create a separate home partition (offer to) move the TEMP folder (used by default by GNOME, KDE or any other DE) on it. If your root partition is too small (for example you have less than 4.4 GB of free space on it) you won't be able to copy or create a image of DVD, unless you change the location of the temp folder (in Brasero or K3B). I think the TEMP folder should be placed in home partition by default as it's usually much bigger and there is no risk of lack the free space. -- offer to create a separate /home partition https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156177 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 379020] [NEW] Update VLC to _1.0.0~rc1+20090516 and problem with 3 packages
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: vlc I updated the official vlc 0.9.9 from Ubuntu Jaunty repositories with vlc_1.0.0~rc1+20090516-0ubuntu1~kow2_i386.deb from the Launchpad PPA. (See: http://webupd8.blogspot.com/2009/05/install-vlc-10-rc-in-ubuntu- from-ppa.html ) Before the update the vlc-nox package (and a few other vlc packages - pluguins, vlc-plugin-esd 0.9.9a-2ubuntu1 for example) was installed with vlc 0.9.9 release. I didn't noticed any conflicts with these two packages and the vlc 0.9.9 version. THE PROBLEMS/BUGS NOTICED DURING UPDATE VLC from version 0.9.9 to 1.0.0 rc1: 1. When trying to update the current vlc 0.9.9 installation the following bug appeared: "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/vlc_1.0.0~rc1+20090516-0ubuntu1~kow2_i386.deb: an attempt to overwritte"/usr/lib/vlc/video_output/libcaca_plugin.so", which exists also in vlc-nox package" Although the bug appeared, I managed to install the vlc 1.0.0 rc1 version via Synaptic. This bug may appear only if the vlc-nox package have already been installed with 0.9.9 version. It's not hard to fix it in the new installer. 2. During installation I was forced to install the oldish (20070626-1, 14.3 MB of disc space) videolan-doc package, which I didn't need with the previous vlc version. I think this dependency should be removed or the documentation file should be updated and installed only on demand. 3. The vlc-plugin-esd 0.9.9a-2ubuntu1 (jaunty) is not compatible with the vlc_1.0.0~rc1+20090516 Is this oldish plugin useful nowadays? IMHO, these 3 minor bugs should be fixed before the vlc 1.0.0 release. ** Affects: vlc (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Update VLC to _1.0.0~rc1+20090516 and problem with 3 packages https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/379020 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 354735] [NEW] [Jaunty] xorg-video-intel goes into low-graphics mode and system crashes after update
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 9.04 beta on my notebook. It's not so old machine - HP nx6110. I have been using Ubuntu on it since Dapper Drake (6.06) and all in all it was rather good experience. Having tested some Alpha releases from previous versions (from 8 series), I found Ubuntu Beta release quite stable... until yesterday update! The installation was a breeze until I decided to update the system. After downloading 197 MB of updates I installed all of them. Before restarting the system the screen became striped displaying a lot of vertical stripes in various colors. After the restart the error message appeared: "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this. (EE) GARTInit: Unable to open /dev/agpgart (No such file or directory) (EE) [drm] drm open failed (EE) intel (0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI (EE) intel (0): Couldn't allocate video memory." The build in graphics is Intel 915 GM Express Chipset (or Intel 910 GM, I'm not sure). I was trying to fix it using xfix option from the Recovery Menu, but I didn't succeed. The bug is so serious that I couldn't restart the system and installed another Ubuntu 9.04 beta side by side. I made another update and installed all the same 197 MB of packages except for xserver-xorg-video-intel. After installation everything have been working great so far. So I found the package that caused a serious bug and made my Ubuntu 9.04 unusable! Reading the description of the changes of the package I found that the buggy versions of the package are: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu4 or ubuntu3. The package provided with Ubuntu 9.04 beta works great for me. So you have managed to fix tree bugs [(LP: #317457) (LP: #322646) (LP: #304614)] and make another one extra. I hope my report will help You to fix that bug which makes Ubuntu unusable on my HP nx6110 notebook.
