Has this (now confirmed) problem been identified and fixed, and if so, which versions of the package(s) contain the fix? With this information, one could update to the version containing the fix and seeing if the system actually works as expected. I can confirm that it happens every time for me (Linux ubuntu 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:43:41 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux) It does not happen with e.g. synaptic, but happens every time with gdmsetup.
