[Bug 1971168] Re: [snap] Files on local network shares are not opened / written

2024-07-06 Thread Markus W
Re #103
Just tested the new package from proposed together with Firefox 127.0.2. Things
appear to work just as expected now and I can no longer reproduce the issue.
Haven't found any side-effects in other places either so far.

Looks like this is now finally fixed in 22.04 with only a few weeks left
before the upgrade to 24.04 rolls out ;)

[Bug 2060534]

2024-06-13 Thread W-alessandro
Yes indeed, I was thinking a startup migration check should be the way to go.
Do we have a way to safely detect only those files that have been generated by
folder compaction? To make sure we exclude any user generated content.
NI Geoff and Magnus to get some validation or suggestions here.

So this bug was fixed in the package virtualbox - 7.0.14-dfsg-2 as
mentioned in bug #2037082

But VirtualBox for Ubuntu 22.04.1 was recently updated to version 6.1.50
and the bug is still present. The bug still has to be fixed for the 6.1
branch.

[Bug 2062951] Re: Random flickering with Intel i915 on Linux 6.8 (Ubuntu 24.04)

2024-05-24 Thread Kenneth W Green
I have back tracked to the duplicate bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1958191 and followed the suggested fix,
which was patch grub boot;-

Patched my grub boot file GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash
i915.enable_dc=0 intel_idle.max_cstate=2"

sudo update-grub and restarted machine

Works a treat no more screen flicker after upgrade to 24.04 and several
reboots just to be sure fix worked on Dell Insperion 9555 i7 64/16Gb 1Tb
Radeon GPU.

[Bug 2062951] Re: Random flickering with Intel i915 on Linux 6.8 (Ubuntu 24.04)

2024-05-22 Thread Kenneth W Green
Hi, OK I have tried both temporary and permanent grub boot changes with
modified intel_idle.max_cstate=2 and 4 and on all occasions after grub
update and reboot the boot splash page is steady the login page flickers
badly and the desktop settles but still flickers.

Tks for the help but unfortunately workaround does not work on the Dell
Insperion 955 Intel i7 64/16Gb 1tb Radeon GPU. Ive include a snap shot
of my patched grub boot file.

[Bug 2064115] Re: Conflict between apparmor and guix on Ubuntu 24.04

2024-04-29 Thread W. J. van der Laan
Looks like this is a case of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/apparmor/+bug/2046844

What does work as a workaround is to create a specifc apparmor profile
for guix, that is really unconfined and allows user namespaces:

Create a file /etc/apparmor.d/guix:

abi ,
include

profile guix /usr/bin/guix flags=(unconfined) {
  userns,

  # Site-specific additions and overrides. See local/README for details.
  include if exists
}

Then do:

/etc/init.d/apparmor reload
aa-enforce guix

[Bug 2064115] Re: Conflict between apparmor and guix on Ubuntu 24.04

2024-04-29 Thread W. J. van der Laan
Uninstalling `apparmor` and rebooting is the only thing i have found
that makes it work.

Selectively disabling the specific rulset with:

# aa-disable unprivileged_userns

Gives a new error:

$ guix environment -C
guix environment: warning: no packages specified; creating an empty environment
guix environment: error: clone: 2114060305: Permission denied

Same for temporarily turning off apparmor entirely.

[Bug 2064115] [NEW] Conflict between apparmor and guix on Ubuntu 24.04

2024-04-29 Thread W. J. van der Laan
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 24.04 i'm unable to use GNU guix as installed from the apt
repository.

Version:
Package: guix
Architecture: amd64
Version: 1.4.0-6build1

To reproduce:
- Install a fresh 23.10 host
- Upgrade to 24.04 with do-release-upgrade -d (but i’ve heard reports that this
also happens with clean 24.04 install), reboot
- `apt-install guix`
- Create an unprivileged user with adduser
- `guix environment -C` as the user gives:
```
[Bug 2009885] Re: Timeshift 21.09.1-1 broken after Rsync upgrade to 3.2.7-0ubuntu0.22.04.2
2024-04-27 Thread Ralf W.
Hello Timo,
after allowing packages from 'proposed' I manually upgraded these
packages:
rsync (version 3.2.3-8ubuntu3) ... upgraded to version
3.2.7-0ubuntu0.22.04.2
timeshift (version 21.09.1-1)  ... upgraded to version 21.09.1-1ubuntu1
(rsync had previously been held back)
Then I successfully ran
- an on-demand snapshot from timeshift gui
- an automated boot-snapshot
Both worked w/o problems recognized and show up in timeshift gui as
expected.
Thank you all for fixing that issue! :-)
[Bug 2062373] Re: 24.04 TPM backed FDE regression following snapd 2.62 update
2024-04-22 Thread Samuel W
I can confirm that updating from 23.10 to 24.04 also keeps the channel
for pc-kernel at 23.10/stable. However the upgrade did install snapd
2.62 (which seems to work fine). Changing the channel for pc-kernel to
24/stable works fine though.
[Bug 2059181] [NEW] update-java-alternatives show error with openjdk-8-jre-headless
2024-03-26 Thread L W R
Public bug reported:
Alternatives for jexec have been excluded from the latest version of
openjdk-8-jre-headless (8u402) and this causes update-java-alternatives
to throw the following error:
update-alternatives: error: alternative /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-
amd64/jre/lib/jexec for jexec not registered; not setting
Solution:
Reference to jexec should be removed from
/usr/lib/jvm/.java-1.8.0-openjdk-amd64.jinfo since update-java-
alternatives uses this file to determine what alternatives to create.
[Bug 2009885] Re: Timeshift 21.09.1-1 broken after Rsync upgrade to 3.2.7-0ubuntu0.22.04.2
2024-03-25 Thread Ralf W.
On my Ubuntu 22.04 timeshift is still version 21.09.1-1 (02 Oct 2021).
No newer version is available from repository.
For the average user timeshift-snapshots stopped working ONE YEAR AGO -
afaik w/o any notification (apart from entries in log files). For this
reason, I consider this error to be rather critical and its importance
should really be increased.
[Bug 1828107] Re: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1
2023-03-23 Thread Craig W.
@BloodyIron, please see: https://github.com/christgau/wsdd
I suggest you install as it is a significantly better work-around than
constantly killing the daemon. It is intended to be released in the next
Debian (bookworm) release as a package, I do not know if Ubuntu will
also be including it in their next release. Whether Nautilus will use it
or not, I could not answer to that - I have long since switched to using
Thunar without any issues.
With regards to "If restarting it 'fixers' it, then why on earth does it
break in the first place?" I suggest you see one of the replies here:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gvfs/-/issues/307 and further reading
[Bug 2007456] Re: CVE-2023-20032: Fixed a possible remote code execution vulnerability in the HFS+ file parser.
2023-02-20 Thread David W
Is there anything that I, and/or others, can do to help resolve this
CVE? As its a critical (9.8 CVE) RCE, I'm quite concerned about running
ClamAV right now with any exposure to the internet, and have begun
looking into compiling a drop-in replacement of ClamAV for this existing
package.
If there's anything I can do to help test or compile the upstream code
with different options, please let me know. I'm happy to help, as I want
to see this resolved as quickly as possible.
[Bug 1971168]
2022-05-11 Thread Markus W
(In reply to Al Savage from comment #6)
> [...] it may not be limited to FF, snaps, or even Mozilla, since my Chrome
> install behaves similarly.
You are right, this is actually affecting other applications, too. I get
the exact same behavior described in the steps to reproduce when using
Chromium installed via snap: Local files open fine, opening files on
network shares does not trigger any reaction.
Should this issue here remain open?
[Bug 1971168] Re: [snap] Downloaded files not saved when saving to local network share
2022-05-09 Thread Markus W
I've updated the bug to reflect that multiple applications are affected
by this. On my system I can reproduce the issue with Firefox and
Chromium, both installed via snap.
** Also affects: snapd (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New
** Description changed:
  Steps to reproduce:
- 1. Run Firefox as a Snap package in Ubuntu 22.04
+ 1. Run Firefox or Chromium as a Snap package in Ubuntu 22.04
  2. Have a SMB file server available where the network shares can be mounted
just by clicking on the share in Nautilus file manager (smb:// protocol,
usually mounted dynamically via `/var/run/user/.../gvfs/...`)
  3. Have one such share mounted and writable
- 4. Open any website containing images in Firefox
+ 4. Open any website containing images in Firefox / Chromium
  5. Right-click on an image and select "Save Image As..."
  6. In the file save dialog, navigate to the mounted share
  7. Assert content of network share is visible and browsable from within the
save dialog
  8. Select "Save" at any folder in the network share
  Actual behavior:
  * File is not saved to selected network share location
  * No download entry is created
  * No error is shown
  Expected behavior:
  * File is saved to selected network share location
  * No error is shown
  Additional information:
  * When saving to a folder on the local machine instead, saving works
correctly as expected
  * In contrast to files, new folders that are created from within the save
dialog are saved correctly on the network share
+ * Similar situation when trying to open a file with Ctrl + O on a network
share from Firefox / Chromium. After double-clicking e.g. an image file in the
file dialog, the file dialog closes but nothing happens otherwise. Opening an
image on a local folder works fine.
** Summary changed:
- [snap] Downloaded files not saved when saving to local network share
+ [snap] Files on local network shares are not opened / written
[Bug 1971009] Re: Read-only file system on a battery
2022-04-29 Thread Pawel W
apport information
** Tags added: apport-collected impish
** Description changed:
  I have a 2021 Dell XPS 15 (9510) i7-11800H, 16 GB, 512 GB SSD, RTX
  3050Ti, Windows 11 Pro.
  I’ve updated the following components:
  - replaced the RAM to 2x32 GB
  - added a brand new Samsung 980 Pro to the second NVMe slot
  On the secondary NVMe drive, I’ve installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.
  Usually, I use Dell WD19TBS USB-C 180W to supply the power, Internet,
  external USB keyboard and mouse, and two monitors. When doing so,
  everything seems to be working perfectly for a long time whether working
  with Ubuntu or Windows.
  However, when the laptop is running on battery, I’m observing Ubuntu
  freezes that happen anywhere between seconds to minutes after a reboot.
  The keyboard stops responding, the icons go missing, and I’m getting
  dropped to the terminal with the following messages appearing:
  __ext4_find_entry:1611 inode #12272199: comm gmain: reading directory
  lblock 0
  __ext4_find_entry:1611 inode #12272199: comm gmain: reading directory
  lblock 0
  And after a few seconds, the following start to appear:
  system-journald: Failed to write entry (22 items, 750 bytes), ignoring:
  Read-only file system
  system-journald: Failed to write entry (22 items, 750 bytes), ignoring:
  Read-only file system
  It seems that disconnecting the docking station usually triggers the
  freeze immediately. When starting from a battery, it usually takes a few
  minutes before everything freezes.
  The only way to recover is to do a power long-press. If I do this
  sequence a few times - boot, wait for hang, power long-press, boot
  again, usually at some point the Samsung 980 Pro is no longer visible in
  the BIOS. I need to boot into Windows, wait a bit, reboot again, and the
  drive appears and it’s possible to boot to Ubuntu
  What I’ve tried:
  update Ubuntu to 21.10
  update to the latest kernel: 5.13.0-41-generic
  update all drivers, including BIOS, from Windows using Dell SupportAssistant
  update Samsung 980 Pro firmware through Samsung Magican
  enabling Full Power Mode in Samsung Magician
  check SMART report for Samsung, it’s all clear
  change GRUB params, currently they look like this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=off nvme_load=YES
nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=250 scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=0"
  tried also default_ps_max_latency values 0, 5500
  fsck from a live boot pendrive
  It looks like the drive decides to go to a sleep at some point and does not
wake up.
  Windows works well both with docking station and battery, the Samsung
  NVMe is recognized by Samsung Magician.
  Any hint what else can I check?
  Thank you!
[Bug 1971009] [NEW] Read-only file system on a battery
2022-04-29 Thread Pawel W
Public bug reported:
I have a 2021 Dell XPS 15 (9510) i7-11800H, 16 GB, 512 GB SSD, RTX
3050Ti, Windows 11 Pro.
I’ve updated the following components:
On the secondary NVMe drive, I’ve installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.
Usually, I use Dell WD19TBS USB-C 180W to supply the power, Internet,
external USB keyboard and mouse, and two monitors. When doing so,
everything seems to be working perfectly for a long time whether working
with Ubuntu or Windows.
However, when the laptop is running on battery, I’m observing Ubuntu
freezes that happen anywhere between seconds to minutes after a reboot.
The keyboard stops responding, the icons go missing, and I’m getting
dropped to the terminal with the following messages appearing:
__ext4_find_entry:1611 inode #12272199: comm gmain: reading directory
lblock 0
__ext4_find_entry:1611 inode #12272199: comm gmain: reading directory
lblock 0
And after a few seconds, the following start to appear:
system-journald: Failed to write entry (22 items, 750 bytes), ignoring:
Read-only file system
system-journald: Failed to write entry (22 items, 750 bytes), ignoring:
It seems that disconnecting the docking station usually triggers the
freeze immediately. When starting from a battery, it usually takes a few
minutes before everything freezes.
The only way to recover is to do a power long-press. If I do this
sequence a few times - boot, wait for hang, power long-press, boot
the BIOS. I need to boot into Windows, wait a bit, reboot again, and the
What I’ve tried:
update Ubuntu to 21.10
update to the latest kernel: 5.13.0-41-generic
update all drivers, including BIOS, from Windows using Dell SupportAssistant
update Samsung 980 Pro firmware through Samsung Magican
enabling Full Power Mode in Samsung Magician
check SMART report for Samsung, it’s all clear
change GRUB params, currently they look like this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=off nvme_load=YES
nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=250 scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=0"
tried also default_ps_max_latency values 0, 5500
fsck from a live boot pendrive
It looks like the drive decides to go to a sleep at some point and does not
wake up.
Windows works well both with docking station and battery, the Samsung
[Bug 1964547]
2022-04-29 Thread W-jan-k
I assume this bug will be fixed once video decoding has been moved to a utility
process (bug 1722051).
Until then, MOZ_DISABLE_RDD_SANDBOX=1 environment variable is required to try
out experimental VAAPI.
[Bug 109943]
2022-02-11 Thread W-alessandro
This slipped between other bugs, thanks for the ping.
I'm not sure there's anything else to do here as I can't reproduce this issue
anymore.
Tested on 91.5.1 and on my mac the usage remains around 5% without spiking
anymore.
Also, if I'm not wrong, this is not a XUL element anymore but it's not a
standard HTML progressbar.
Can anyone else still reproduce it?
update to kernel 5.4.0-92, and having linux-firmware 1.187.24.
1) I'm using a UGreen USB Switch to switch between the inputs of keyboard,
mouse and audio between two stations
2) After the kernel and linux-firmware upgrade I did a reboot, the system took
much longer to start (console shown "failed to enumerate USB devices"), when it
did boot external keyboards and mouse wasn't working
3) Pluging in any device directly to laptop's USB port does not work
4) I've managed to get the external keyboard and mouse to work by disabling the
Bluetooth in Ubuntu settings and rebooting back to 5.4.0-91 (worked via USB
Switch)
5) However after another reboot to 5.4.0-91, USB ports stopped working again
I have, but it is extremely user-unfriendly and unless you are looking
up this bug report, you would never know how to do it.  Even then, the
notes in comment #87 are not the complete instructions.
Basically, this method is a dirty workaround of a patch job that needs
to be truly fixed in both the backend and the UI. The method used to get
and capture the key is not graceful, and the UI is plain incorrect.
I would fix it myself if it was something that had the skill to do (I
love open source software for that!), but I do not feel comfortable in
my skill level making those modifications.  Instead, I have pointed this
very skilled and talented community to another piece of open-source
software that has done a very good job at tackling this issue for not
only Google Drive, but also for numerous other cloud storage vendors.
Their code base is mature, and the capabilities of that tool complement
what users of this project need.
In reality, the project might even look at integrating that tool's
functionality into this one, similar to how other modules have become
standard within the software. Spell checking is one function that comes
to mind.
I see this as an opportunity to potentially have one community help
another, giving them both a way to learn from the other's work and
experience. Isn't that one of the main benefits of being open source?
[Bug 1844453]
2021-11-10 Thread W-daniel-w
This is not working in v7.2.2.2
The key is not being properly stored, and the UI leaves a LOT to be
desired.
You may find that the way the tool rclone (rclone.org) handles this
authentication is much more graceful than the current solution.
The dialog box is also misleading about what, when (at which step), and
where to paste the key from the OAuth process.
There has to be a better way for users to be able to use this feature.
Yes. I only remembered that a query like `-moz-gtk-csd-transparent-
[Bug 1871644]
2021-10-21 Thread W-jan-k
(In reply to Emilio Cobos Álvarez (:emilio) from comment #20)
Non-composited X11 (the legacy variant of X11: i3, KDE with manually disabled
compositor, etc.) does not support transparency. Everything that would usually
be transparent/alpha is just black/opaque. Menus and window corners had
[shadows on black
background](https://bug1479135.bmoattachments.org/attachment.cgi?id=8995686)
(=fat black borders).
The autoscroll icon was a [black square with a white
circle](https://bug1649246.bmoattachments.org/attachment.cgi?id=9160184) in it.
[XShapeCombineMask](https://searchfox.org/mozilla-
central/search?q=XShapeCombineMask=) is implemented for software
rendering only. Firefox creates a stencil (like a cookie cutter) of
where transparency needs to get cut off. X11 then applies this stencil
on every frame. The outer shadow of a rounded main menu, addon widget or
[window titlebar](https://searchfox.org/mozilla-
central/rev/37373cdeed20695af1ff1fd090f0736d9bf15e65/widget/gtk/nsWindow.cpp#6729,6793)
has transparency, so it gets cut off by X11, leaving a rounded widget
without shadow.
XShapeCombineMask is not implemented for hardware rendering.
That's why SW WR is enforced for menus, addons and autoscroll icon on
non-composited X11 to make use of XShapeCombineMask while the main window is
still using OpenGL.
XShapeCombineMask
* caused problems on
[Mutter](https://searchfox.org/mozilla-central/rev/37373cdeed20695af1ff1fd090f0736d9bf15e65/widget/gtk/nsWindow.cpp#9084)
 back then
* crashes the GPU process on Nvidia: bug 1730991
* causes performance problems according to the Chromium bugtracker: bug 1733094
comment 18,https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1198080
Could XShapeCombineMask be removed and instead menus and the autoscroll icon
loose their border-radius (become rectangular) and loose their shadow (to avoid
black background) if gdk_screen_is_composited() is false?
IIUC, that would reduce code complexity, improve stability and performance.
A rectangular autoscroll icon on non-composited X11 would be noticeable.
But users choose non-composited X11 to get more performance than with
composited X11. Considering this as well, it doesn't make sense to use
XShapeCombineMask which contradicts their intent and causes above
problems.
2021-10-21 Thread W-jan-k
> Created attachment 9246290
> Bug 1509931 - Remove -moz-gtk-csd-transparent-background. r=stransky
> We always use alpha visual for WebRender
KDE with disabled compositor, i3, etc. use alpha visual, but it's not
transparent.
Could -moz-gtk-csd-transparent-background be defined with
gdk_screen_is_composited()
and be used to forbid outer border-radius + outer shadow of main
menu/addon/etc. widgets
to remove any Xshape usage (bug 1730991 comment 6)?
According to the Chromium bugtracker, Xshape also causes performance problems
(bug 1730991 comment 7).
2021-07-28 Thread Bradley W
Public bug reported:
Screen would go black if i change it to 1600x900 or anything thats not 1080p.
This may be tied to how discord cant screenshare at all besides its own
application.
Im guessing you guys haft to make a fix for vega 6 drivers.
[Bug 1931722] Re: software-properties-gtk generates python errors
2021-06-16 Thread W. Bourgeois
I'm attaching the contents of sudo systemctl status as a text file.
It appears that I can actually launch software-properties,  but only as
sudo. The direct link in the Ubuntu menu won't work.
It seems it is more related to dbus, but I am not sure.
** Attachment added: "systemctl.txt"
