[Bug 1242854] [NEW] udisks2 prevents external hard drive from working

2013-10-21 Thread Waleed Hamra
Public bug reported:

I can't remember when exactly has the problem started.. But all I
remember, is that at some point in raring, the disk was working fine.
Then a long period passed when I never tried it, and I upgraded to
Saucy, and now I realize it isn't working.

The disk is a SATA laptop-size 320GB Hard Drive inside a Toshiba SATA-
to-USB enclosure. It contains 3 partitions, a FAT32 partition, and EXT3
partition, and a swap partition.

What happens, is the following: I plug the device in my Sony Vaio's usb
port, and I immediately notice the normal messages in dmesg, which end
in this:

[70092.111876] sd 29:0:0:0: [sdb] Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00
[70092.117266] sd 29:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page found
[70092.117275] sd 29:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
[70092.119305] sd 29:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page found
[70092.119314] sd 29:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through

[70092.221952] sd 29:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page found
[70092.221963] sd 29:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
[70092.221970] sd 29:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI disk

All normal so far, but the Device Notifier widget doesn't jump up as
expected, I wait ten seconds, and a new message appears in dmesg:

[70100.124102] usb 2-2: reset high-speed USB device number 20 using
ehci-pci

This message appears 10 seconds after the above lines, and after it,
it's all hell.. Basically, the disk is no longer accessible, and as
expected, dmesg fills up with tons of error messages, such as:

[70111.838221] Read(10): 28 00 24 c4 59 bd 00 00 08 00
[70111.854311] sd 29:0:0:0: [sdb] Unhandled sense code
[70111.854318] sd 29:0:0:0: [sdb]
[70111.854322] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[70111.854326] sd 29:0:0:0: [sdb]

[70111.854335] sd 29:0:0:0: [sdb]

[70111.854344] sd 29:0:0:0: [sdb] CDB:
[70111.854346] Read(10): 28 00 00 00 00 3f 00 00 08 00

My first idea, was a kernel regression.. So I booted a 3.8 kernel from Raring,
and the problem remained.
After some digging around, and reading various online forums, some people
suggested udisks2, and some suggested it happens specifically because of FAT
filesystems, unfortunately, I have no disks to test non-FAT disks, but I might
be able to in 2 days.
So I tested the udisks2 theory, by first stopping "udev" with "sudo stop udev".
Upon plugging the device, no errors happen, and I can mount the device manually
just fine. I started udev again, and did an "aptitude purge udisks2", and the
same positive results came up.

So it seems udisks2 is resetting the usb device for some reason :(

[Bug 1025012] [NEW] libmsn fails to login with custom domains

2012-07-15 Thread Waleed Hamra
Public bug reported:

i have an msn/wlm account that isnt an @hotmail.com or affiliated account, but
using a custom domain. i tried with kopete and kmess, and both fail to login,
reporting wrong password. amsn logs in fine.
the bug seems to be in libmsn itself. when using a custom domain, after a
couple of exchanges with the server, the server sends the URL of a new server
to be used, and disconnects (i'm no whiz with the MSN protocol, but that's what
i understand from amsn's protocol window, and some wireshark monitoring). amsn
handles this fine, and uses the new server, libmsn based programs seem to get
confused about the disconnection, and fail to login.
i just tried pidgin, and it also functions correctly (pidgin uses libpurple).
i'm aware this should probably be posted with the libmsn developers, but i
figured having both reports, and linking would be a better choice. so if you
can please point to the libmsn bug tracker, i'll be thankful :)

[Bug 1024568] [NEW] wireless injection doesnt work due to channel bug

2012-07-13 Thread Waleed Hamra
Public bug reported:

amazingly enough, the linux kernel shipped with ubuntu has all that is
needed for packet injection on wireless interfaces, if not for one bug
making it useless. the bug is related to channel selection, which
refuses to get set, showing up as -1 for other programs, like aircrack.

steps to reproduce:
1- have a wireless card with drivers that can inject (i tested ralink drivers,
rtl8192ce and iwlwifi)
2- install aircrack (from source, or deb package - sadly, not available in
precise, but debs from oneiric work)
3- sudo airmon-ng start wlan0 1
4- iwconfig (note the lack of channel frequency on created interface)
5- run aireplay-ng in any mode except test mode, you'll get a complaint about
negative channel.

please note, verifying this bug with bleeding edge compat-wireless makes
no sense at all, since major modifications to drivers have happened, and
the current state of compat-wireless injection is riddled with
regressions.

fortunately, there is a simple solution, a patch available at:
http://patches.aircrack-ng.org/channel-negative-one-maxim.patch

i took the time to download, on precise, the ubuntu linux source
package, unpacked it, applied the supplied diff, applied the patch
linked above, and ran the compilation as per instruction in the ubuntu
wiki for compiling kernels. the end result was the linux image,
headers, and tools .deb packages, which i installed. then unloaded the
wireless driver (i was on a laptop using iwlwifi, a centrino 6xxx card),
and loaded it again (just to make sure the new one is loaded), and
tested injection, worked flawlessly.

so basically, it's just one patch, and you could make all people relying
on injection, happy as they can work with stock distro kernels :)

thanks

[Bug 883441] Re: Kernel 3.0 (11.10 default kernel) won't boot unless acpi=off, worked fine with the default kernels of the 3 previous releases

2012-04-01 Thread Waleed Hamra
it depends on when and where will the patch be accepted into the kernel source
upstream. the kernel will continue receiving updates in ubuntu after every
minor release from upstream, but if the patch doesn't get released till say,
version 3.2, and ubuntu is shipping 3.1, the patch won't show up. so we'll see.
in the meantime, let's make sure we're al taking about the same bug here. i'll
post the patch in this thread, can people subscribed to this report compile
their kernels with this patch and verify it fixes their problem?

that won't be necessary. check the link for the upstream bug report. there's
already a patch available, just awaiting further dev instructions/confirmation.
if acceptable, i can post the patch here for others to try it, and confirm it
also fixes their bug, just to make sure we're all discussing the same bug here

[Bug 897512] [NEW] java and libreoffice crashed after languagetool tries checking grammar

2011-11-28 Thread Waleed Hamra
Public bug reported:

i installed the langauge tool extension to libreoffice
(http://www.languagetool.org/), which is supposed to check grammar and writing
style. the extension is written in java apparently.
i started libreoffice in a terminal to see crash output, attached along the bug
report.
steps to reproduce, after installing extension, restart libreoffice, type any
grammatically wrong sentence "i are an nut", and check spelling (F7) few times,
libreoffice usually crashes from first or second checking.

[Bug 883441] Re: Kernel 3.0 (11.10 default kernel) won't boot unless acpi=off, worked fine with the default kernels of the 3 previous releases

2011-11-24 Thread Waleed Hamra
if it helps, i booted without quiet and splash to see the actual kernel
output when it stops loading, then compared it to a normal boot with a
2.6 kernel. the last lines outputted before it stops are:

[0.286362] Dquot-cache hash table entries: 1024 (order 0, 4096 bytes)
[0.288033] fuse init (API version 7.16)

and it stops there. on a normal boot, the next lines are:

[0.290064] ACPI: acpi_idle registered with cpuidle
[0.292162] ERST: Table is not found!
[0.292294] Serial: 8250/16550 driver, 32 ports, IRQ sharing enabled

hope this helps on giving any ideas who's the culprit. this bug is getting over
my head. i downloaded a 3.1 linux kernel source and compiled it after careful
selection of options, and ended with same bug. then brought the config file of
the working 2.6 kernel, and used it as starting point to compile the 3.1 kernel
(didnt actually modify anything myself, just ran the config and closed it to
let it automatically remove any deprecated options that can ruin the compile),
and compiled the kernel, and again, same bug.
me thinks it isnt any missing module, some acpi change is doing this, but i
cant be sure.
thanks in advance for any help

[Bug 326800] Re: unresponsive when "Select Best Server" button is clicked

2011-11-20 Thread Waleed Hamra
yeah, for me too it seems. though it's a sure way to get my router to block me
as a potential "DOS attack", but that's another story...
no hanging/freezing anymore, and can see a functioning fill bar with ping
targets below it.

[Bug 885506] [NEW] upstart jobs still using /var/run

2011-11-02 Thread Waleed Hamra
Public bug reported:

when running:
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

i noticed it tries to access some files from the new style structure, from
/run/network. but this directory are not created on my system. upon further
inspection, i noticed that the networking.conf file in /etc/init "mkdir"s the
/var/run/network directory. this file belongs to ifupdown.
i modiefied the file based on guidelines in the oneiricupgrade pages in the
ubuntu wiki, so that /var/run gets replaced with /{,var/}run, but the
/run/network directory is still not being created :S

2011-11-02 Thread Waleed Hamra
same issue as with OP, system hangs 1 second after boot. turning off
acpi solves the problem, but that's not really a good option, hyper
threading gets disabled as well with it. all previous kernel versions
worked fine.

[Bug 855247] Re: Trying to upgrade to 11.04 and it fails on a file.

2011-09-20 Thread Waleed Hamra
try changing the mirror you are using to resolve this.
type in a terminal:

sudo software-properties-gtk (or sudo software-properties-kde if using
KDE)

and change the mirror to anything else
