[Bug 2083922] [NEW] Touchpad freezes on Acer Aspire E5

2024-10-08 Thread Walther Freud
Public bug reported:

After the touchpad froze again I ran journalctl -b0 and copied the
interesting section to journalctl_-b0_excerpt.log. This is probably the
main error log for this bug.

Attached are also the outputs of
lsb_release -rd > lsb_release_-rd
cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
sudo lspci -vnvn > lspci-vnvn.log
apt-cache policy linux-image-6.8.0-45-generic
uname -a > uname_-a
sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.txt

What I expected to happen:
Normal use of the touchpad including tapping (clicking), moving cursor,
scrolling, zooming.

What happened instead:
My touchpad freezes after some time (sometimes it is frozen directly after
restart, sometimes after a few hours). I am not ables to move the cursor or do
multi touch actions with the touchpad. If I hold down one finger on the pad it
act as though I was repeatedly left clicking.

Additional notes:
1) The i2c Touchpad mode in my bios is set to advanced, otherwise scrolling and
other action with two or more fingers don't work.
2) Booting with the kernel parameters in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingIRQProblems leads to no improvements.

I'm happy to provide more debug info and logs.

[Bug 2066275] Re: [SRU] Fix black screen on second boot due to video drivers not being ready.

2024-07-13 Thread walther
Can confirm that version 0.20.0-2ubuntu4.2 of sddm fixes this issue on my fresh
Kubuntu install (with xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu, Radeon RX 6600 XT).
Thanks for your work on this! I spent the better part of a day searching for
the cause since the logs contained no errors or warnings.

[Bug 1961305] [NEW] Cannot boot into Xen dom0

2022-02-17 Thread Thomas Walther
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS
Release:20.04

The linux-generic-hwe-20.04 5.13 Kernels are compiled with

#CONFIG_KERNEL_GZIP is not set
CONFIG_KERNEL_ZSTD=y

preventing Xen 4.13.x / 4.14.x from booting into Dom0. After compiling
the kernel by myself using

CONFIG_KERNEL_GZIP=y
#CONFIG_KERNEL_ZSTD is not set

it works as expected. Kernel boots and Xen is working as intended.
Please revert to CONFIG_KERNEL_GZIP=y like in the former HWE (5.11?)
series not having this problem.

Thank you

[Bug 1629631] Re: package udev 229-4ubuntu10 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2016-10-02 Thread Michael Walther
Further analysis shows that the system has an (empty?!?) file
runmbservice in the /etc/init.d/ directory, plus links in the rcX.d
directories:

root@bto03:~# find /etc/ | grep runmbbservice | xargs ls -ld
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Sep 28 11:44 /etc/init.d/runmbbservice
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Sep 28 11:44 /etc/rc2.d/K10runmbbservice ->

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Sep 28 11:44 /etc/rc5.d/S99runmbbservice ->

[Bug 1085044] Re: nvidia-experimental-310 does not provide nvidia-current

2012-12-02 Thread Walther
Confirmed to be an issue of semantics, standards, and differences
between "how things intuitively should be" and "how things are" :) On
the concrete side, solution confirmed to be easier done by Bumblebee
devs, and action will be taken asap. Thanks for everybody for this
brainstorming, in the end that's what fixes bugs.

Hope that's all for now, closing.

ArchangeGabriel on https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/bumblebee-ppa/issues/1 :

Ok, thanks for those informations, I was lacking time to investigate but you've
bring the solution.

So only Lucid is concerned with a driver older than 260 currently, however this
release doesn't any other flavour of nvidia driver (no -updates version). I
will remove version dependency on newer release, and only let this for Lucid.
Will try do so today or tomorrow at worse.

[Bug 1085044] Re: nvidia-experimental-310 does not provide nvidia-current

2012-12-01 Thread Walther
** Description changed:

Installing nvidia-experimental-310 causes bumblebee to uninstall, as
bumblebee depends on nvidia-current. However, logically, nvidia-
experimental-310, being an updated, newer version of the driver,
essentially containing all the previous / existing features, should
provide nvidia-current, and hence nvidia-experimental-310 should satisfy
the requirements of bumblebee similarly as nvidia-current.

-
- This causes a major issue with laptops using Optimus technology; it restricts
the users to nvidia-current, allowing no testing of the more up-to-date drivers
with improved performance.
+ This causes a major issue with laptops using Optimus technology; it
+ restricts the users to nvidia-current, allowing no testing of the more
+ up-to-date drivers with improved performance.

  What should happen:
User is able to install and use updated, even if experimental, nvidia drivers
on a laptop with Optimus
  What happens:
Installing nvidia-experimental-310 causes bumblebee to uninstall, and hence
on boot-up no nvidia card is detected as there is no bumblebee kernel module to
turn it on.
+
+ EDIT:
+ With further inspection, as shown below (see full texts), it seems that the
package nvidia-experimental-310 *does* provide nvidia-current. HOWEVER, it also
*conflicts* with that package.

[Bug 1085044] [NEW] nvidia-experimental-310 does not provide nvidia-current

2012-11-30 Thread Walther
Public bug reported:

Installing nvidia-experimental-310 causes bumblebee to uninstall, as
bumblebee depends on nvidia-current. However, logically, nvidia-
experimental-310, being an updated, newer version of the driver,
essentially containing all the previous / existing features, should
provide nvidia-current, and hence nvidia-experimental-310 should satisfy
the requirements of bumblebee similarly as nvidia-current.

This causes a major issue with laptops using Optimus technology; it restricts
the users to nvidia-current, allowing no testing of the more up-to-date drivers
with improved performance.

What should happen:
User is able to install and use updated, even if experimental, nvidia drivers
on a laptop with Optimus
What happens:
Installing nvidia-experimental-310 causes bumblebee to uninstall, and hence on
boot-up no nvidia card is detected as there is no bumblebee kernel module to
turn it on.

I couldn't get the git kernel, so I tried that patch against
linux-3.7-rc3. Unfortunately, it didn't change anything in my set up
(Elitebook 8530w, NVIDIA Corporation G96M [Quadro FX 770M] card).

[Bug 138654] Re: Annoying and useless delays on password entry errors

2012-07-15 Thread walther
Hard-coded numbers are always bad. Why not simply make this value configurable?
Also I have to admit, I don't understand why pam_unix applies this delay. Is
this not what pam_delay (whose delay _is_ configureable) is made for?

[Bug 921321]

2012-02-20 Thread Walther
I repeated testing using kernel 3.3.0 RC4, and results are similar:

nvapeek (before):
e100: 001c1100
e28c: 0100
e104: 72267640 0441474b
e280: 4747

After:
e100: 001c1100
e28c: 0100
e104: 72267240 0441474b
e280: 4747

Compared to the previous version, the only change is that 0x1000 was
added to 0xe104 (and 0x400 is still unset on resume). And, of course,
brightness controls ceased to response after resuming.

PS: What still worries me is that after resuming nvagetbios still fails,
that is a definite vbios bug/corruption somewhere, isn't it...

[Bug 936538] [NEW] Flash doesn't work in latest Firefox update (amd64)

2012-02-19 Thread Ted Walther
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded to Oneiric and Firefox8. Now the browser freezes
and grays out whenever I try to watch a flash video. Reinstalling
flash, uninstalling all Flash alternatives, trying the Gnome Classic
shell, none of this worked.

I see someone posted a very similar bug about an hour ago. Please merge
this bug with that one, its bug number is #936521

[Bug 921321]

2012-02-17 Thread Walther
There should be a solution to this dilemma, considering that nvidia's
binary blob does it correctly.

I got the nvapeek results for using the binary blob, and the results I
got are:

Before
e100: 001c1100
e28c: 0100
e104: 72266640 0441474b
e280: 4747

After
e100: 001c1100
e28c: 0100
e104: 72266640 0441474b
e280: 4747

Notice that unlike nouveau, register 0xe104's content is unaltered after
resuming. What is this particular register for?

The vbios before suspending is identical between nouveau and nvidia, and
it is also identical to the one after resuming with nvidia. However,
nvgetbios fails with nouveau after resuming:

./nvagetbios > vbios.txt
No extraction method specified (using -s extraction_method). Defaulting to
PRAMIN.
Attempt to extract the vbios from card 0 (nv96) using PRAMIN
Invalid signature(0x55aa). You may want to try another retrieval method.

Is this a sign that the vbios is somehow wrong/corrupted after resume?

Note that I am also using a Elitebook 8530W, with an nVidia Corporation
G96M [Quadro FX 770M] card, using Linux 3.1.10.

[Bug 740893] Re: Kernel 2.6.38-7 completely dims screen on Intel GMA 4500M

2011-10-02 Thread Markus Walther
fine to be here.

I just wanted to say about this issue and ask the kernel developers to
not set the brightness to FF without being sure that this would be the
right setting in order to gain a maximum brightness of the backlight of
the screen. Well, then. You might get a scrpt that is working after
installation and get a hint how to perform the installation itself.
Shortly, you'll be able to control the brightness of the backlight of
your screen. But you will not be able to play fullscreen games like
tuxracer. And, it will be hard to install the system without seeing
anything on your screen.

The solution given at http://www.markuswalther.com/tech/backlight.html
ia only partial, installation and games like tuxracer will stay in the
dark.

However, if you used an external monitor for installation, and used
sbrinst from the archive on this page, you'll be able to control the
backlight setting of your screen.

But, that is not what I wanted. I'd rather liked the kernel programmers
to know that brightness settings with Intel GMA 4500M chipsets may
differ completely and tell this the distibutioon managers. Did I fail
and have to go something else?

Markus

I have this problem also, but only for ~3 days. Previously everything was
working. The FTP server was not changed in any way, so I guess, there was an
gvfs update?
Ubuntu 10.04, gvfs 1.6.1-ubuntu1build1, nautilus 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1.1

Copying in terminal gives this:

Re: [Bug 467989] Re: Screen brightness toggles between zero and the lowest step when pressing decrease-keyboard shortcut after reaching "zero"

2010-09-09 Thread Walther
Hello,

I'm sorry to inform that I'm not using a laptop nor Karmic Koala
anymore, thus I can not confirm that information. However, it was
present in Karmic when I reported the bug. However, it was quite a long
time ago. I suggest you to try it yourself, though it might be fixed
already.

Best regards,

2010-08-11 Thread Walther
I use Ubuntu 10.04(64 bit) and a hp officejet 8500 via Ethernet.
Printing and scanning works pretty well. The only thing which is not
running is duplex scanning(Got all packages up-to-date).

I atached a log with sudo simple-scan -d ->log.txt  (With ->log.txt I
have to reselect the scanner.)

[Bug 600158] Re: After upgrading to firefox 3.6.6 flash plugin crashes

Maybe the issues also apply to other plug-ins. Flash and Java are widely
used, so that the users recognize these first.

[Bug 600158] Re: After upgrading to firefox 3.6 java plugin and flash plugin do not work

2010-07-01 Thread Marcus Walther
I can also confirm these issues. The flash 9.x plug-in was still listed
at about:plug-ins, but did not work at all (but I got no "crashed"
note).

I got Flash working by performing these steps:

1. Purged every flash related package (*flash*, *gnash*, ...)
2. Cleaned manually all remains (find /usr/lib/ -name
flashplugin-alternative.so | xargs sudo rm)
3. Cleaned my ~/.mozilla/plugin/ directory.
4. Installed fresh Flash 10 .deb from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

The Java issue remains. The plug-ins are not listed at about:plugins

I even reinstalled sun-java6-plugin and the files seem to be installed
correctly:

# find /usr/lib/ -name '*java*so'
/usr/lib/xulrunner/plugins/libjavaplugin.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so
/usr/lib/kde3/kjavaappletviewer.so
/usr/lib/midbrowser/plugins/libjavaplugin.so
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin.so
/usr/lib/iceape/plugins/libjavaplugin.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.20/jre/lib/i386/libjavaplugin_nscp_gcc29.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.20/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.20/jre/lib/i386/libjava_crw_demo.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.20/jre/lib/i386/libjavaplugin_jni.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.20/jre/lib/i386/libjavaplugin_nscp.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.20/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.20/jre/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/libjavaplugin.so
/usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/plugins/libjavaplugin.so

But Firefox does not recognize the plug-in. Any suggestions?

[Bug 467989] [NEW] Screen brightness toggles between zero and the lowest step when pressing decrease-keyboard shortcut after reaching "zero"

2009-11-01 Thread Walther
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

Pressing keyboard shortcut to decrease screen brightness multiple times should
lead to screen fully dimmed, brightness of value "zero" in the defult applet.

Pressing keyboard shortcut to decrease screen brightness decreases
brightness until "zero". If pressed then, the applet and the brightness
toggles between zero brightness and the lowest step.

0) Press your keyboard shortcut for decreasing screen brightness multiple
times, until it reaches "zero" brightness.
1) Press it again, and you will notice that it toggles between "zero" and the
lowest step.

[Bug 454246] [NEW] URLs in description are not links

2009-10-17 Thread Walther Zwart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

There are several packages that mention a URL in the description but you
cannot click it to open the URL.

For instance the package called "ubuntu restricted extras" says in two
places: "Please see http://...";. In other words it is specifically
asking the user to go somewhere, but you cannot click on the link. You
can't even copy/paste the link with right click or Ctrl+C. Apparently
the user is supposed to type the whole URL manually.

[Bug 345271] [NEW] Error while Refreshing folder

2009-03-19 Thread Walther
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Hi,

I have two IMAP accounts. (Use Ubuntu 8.10 - 64bit) Every now and then I get
this error on the 2nd account (never seems to happen on the 1st, although the
first): Error while Refreshing folder. I also sometimes get: Error while
Storing folder 'INBOX'. In the console I get:
evolution-mail-Message: Error occurred while existing dialogue active:
Server unexpectedly disconnected: Operation now in progress

I have deleted the account and all files and folders in .evolution I could find
with the name of the account in them, but it does not solve the problem. I have
also tried all the "force-shutdown" + file deletion suggestions I could find in
the last 3 weeks on the web. What I end up doing is closing Evolution, using
webmail and then after a day or two the Evolution works again. Strange. It will
then work for a day or so and then the error is back.
When I get the error I receive mail on the 1st account, I can also send mail on
both accounts.

Regards,

Walther

[Bug 277865] Re: usb-creator crashes when USB stick is a single filesystem with no partition table. (AttributeError in install_bootloader())

2009-01-20 Thread Walther Zwart
I made the patch against bzr trunk.

The patch does not 'solve' the problem, but it makes usb-creator handle the
situation like it should.
As far as I can see you cannot install the live-cd to a disk without a
partition table.
So with these patches you get an error message if you try.

You still have to format the drive manually, because usb-creator should
not destroy an existing filesystem.

[Bug 277865] Re: usb-creator crashes when USB stick is a single filesystem with no partition table. (AttributeError in install_bootloader())

2009-01-17 Thread Walther Zwart
This patch makes the frontend log the error before it does anything
else. While troubleshooting this bug, the warning sometimes wouldn't
come up and there would be nothing in the log. With this patch it will
at least show up in the log file.

[Bug 277865] Re: usb-creator crashes when USB stick is a single filesystem with no partition table. (AttributeError in install_bootloader())

2009-01-17 Thread Walther Zwart
Had the same problem here. I had an USB stick with a filesystem on the
block device (and no partition table).

I created 3 patches:
The first one is for a bug in backend.py
The second one detects the problem in gtk_frontend.py
The third one makes the logging a bit more reliable.

[Bug 147085] Re: audio delay in wengophone

2007-10-23 Thread Walther Zwart
The output on the command line doesn't give any useful information. It
sound like it keeps dropping little bits of audio too (and maybe it is
trying to create a larger buffer to compensate?)

I switched to an older version from www.openwengo.org because I really
need it almost every day.

I have a big delay too on a 32-bit system and it seems to be increasing
over time.

Tried disabling the video, but it didn't help. The other end was on a Windows
system using 2.1.2.
I'll run it from the command line tonight and see if the output has anything
meaningful in it.
