[Bug 774444] Re: Compiz Negative Plugin fullscreen mode doesn't apply to newly opened windows, regression from compiz .8

2011-05-13 Thread WaywardGeek
I find this bug exists both in both Ubiquity, and in Ubuntu Classic,
after running "compiz --replace". This effects me strongly, as I need
to minimize the total light that I see to prolong my remaining central
vision. Plus, non-inverted white windows physically hurt to look at,
now that my eyes are overly sensitive to bright light.

If anyone has any good pointers as to what code likely is causing this
bug, I'll try to track it down.

[Bug 774444] Re: Compiz Negative Plugin fullscreen mode doesn't apply to newly opened windows, regression from compiz .8

2011-05-13 Thread WaywardGeek
So, I'm having trouble tracking down the source code for the compiz
negative plugin, but I did find a work-around on the Compiz wiki:

http://wiki.compiz.org/Plugins/Neg

xcalib can be used if the "Negative" filter is not supported by your
hardware or driver. To invert the screen palette with xcalib:

xcalib -i -a

I had to install it with "sudo apt-get install xcalib", but then it
worked as advertised.

Just tested this issue in Ubuntu Maverick, and it's still there. Isn't
there someone at Mozilla who recently has been tasked to enhance gecko

[Bug 546922] Re: [lucid] Some suggestions with new gfxboot artwork

2010-03-25 Thread WaywardGeek
I would like to see a different solution. The first gnome window now
runs a graphical application to ask if the user would like to try
Ubuntu, or install. I would like to add a button to this screen to
access accessibility options, just like the old console-based options.
Further, I'd love it if accessibility options could be assigned to
function keys, so that for example to turn on Orca, I just hit F3.

Awesome! I've added a ^G (ascii 7) to the isolinux.txt file, but it
still doesn't beep in my virtual machine when I build the ISO with
remastersys. I'm not sure why.

[Bug 582809] Re: Synaptics Clickpad touchpad buttons are not working

2010-09-22 Thread WaywardGeek
Just for clarification for kernel newbies like me, to apply this patch,
I do something like:

$ sudo apt-get build-dep --no-install-recommends linux-image-2.6.35-22-generic
.config
$ apt-get source linux-image-2.6.35-22-generic
$ cd linux-2.6.35
$ pushd drivers/input/mouse
$ patch < ~/Download/synaptics.diff
$ cp /boot/config-2.6.35-22-generic .config
$ popd
$ make modules

Is there a way to just build the needed module? Which module do I need
to build and install?

[Bug 586373] [NEW] Startup Disk Creator locks up Orca screen reader

2010-05-27 Thread WaywardGeek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

There is a know problem with python applications and at-spi, which is
the code that provides an accessible description of GTK widgets to
screen readers. If you try and update your GTK interface from a thread
that was not the one that called gtk.main(), then the entire Gnome
desktop locks up when your application exits. This always happens with
usb-creator-gtk if Orca is running.

While this is technically a bug somewhere deep down in either the
pyatspi code, or more likely at-spi-registryd, it would be great to have
usb-creator-gtk be accessible sooner than later. What it takes is a
fairly straight-forward, if not small, change in the apt callbacks.
Rather than updating GTK widgets directly, they should register a change
in some variables, and wake up the main thread so it can show the
updates.

[Bug 561563] [NEW] Update-manager checkboxes not working with Orca

2010-04-12 Thread WaywardGeek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

To reproduce this bug, install and run Orca, the Gnome screen reader.
Then, run update-manager from the System/Administration menu. If there
are any packages that need updating, they will be listed in the dialog
box that appears, with a checked check-box control by each item in the
list. Use the TAB key to move to the first item in the list, while
listening to Orca's description. Orca correctly reads that the box is
checked. Then, press the space bar. The check will be cleared, but
Orca only announces that space was pressed. Try moving to the next
item, and then back to the first item. Orca will read that the box is
checked, even though it isn't.

This same bug exists in gnome-app-install. Both applications are
written in Python, and seem to share the concept of a list of checked
items, and both lists fail to work properly with Orca in the exact same
manner. Joanmarie, the lead developer of Orca, has examined carefully
the debug output from Orca when trying toggle the gnome-app-install
check boxes. The messages in that case coming from gnome-app-install do
not report that the checkbox was toggled, and even though the checkbox
has been toggled, if you move away and then back to the item, gnome-app-
install reportes in a message to Orca that the checkbox is still
checked. I believe this is also the case with update-manager. The bug
may be in the checkbox control not reporting the toggle properly.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04

Thanks, Michael! I'll try and understand your patch, and then see if

[Bug 586373] Re: Startup Disk Creator locks up Orca screen reader

2010-06-17 Thread WaywardGeek
To reproduce this, enable Orca in the Live CD. For the first 30 seconds
after boot, press space bar every 4 seconds. There is a screen at the
beginning of booting that expects you to press a key to get to the old
boot menu. You should be at a screen asking for your language. Press
Enter to select English. Then press F5 to open the accessibility
options menu. Press 3 to turn on screen reader, and Enter to get back
to the boot menu, and Enter one more time to start the boot process.

Orca should come up by default in the Gnome session, with the
preferences dialog box showing. You can just click Cancel on the
Preferences Dialog, and manually run System/Administration/Startup Disk
Creator. I'll leave it to the reader to find some ISO somewhere to
burn, and a USB key to format. Once you've done that, press Make
Startup Disk. The progress will be shown with a progress bar.
Everything works fine until the end, when the application tries to exit.
At that point, the Gnome desktop locks up and becomes unresponsive.
However, your USB key is ready for use, since the whole process actually
worked. Let me know if there's anything else I can do.

[Bug 574915] Re: [Lucid] please upgrade gnome-orca 2.30.0 package version to 2.30.1 upstream version

2010-05-04 Thread WaywardGeek
Lucid is the most accessible Ubuntu release in at least two years, maybe
the most accessible ever. Many blind users stayed on Ubuntu 8.04 for
two years, skipping the less stable releases in between. I believe this
pattern will continue, and the blind will rely on Ubuntu Lucid far more
than typical users over the next two years. However, Orca is
progressing very rapidly. I believe we will be happy to test Orca new
releases on the Vinux derivation of Ubuntu Lucid to help insure the
stability of orca package upgrades. I hope that Ubuntu Lucid will be
able to move forward for the blind over the coming two years, rather
than staying back the way Ubuntu Hardy did.

Thanks,
Bill

[Bug 564776] [NEW] Screen Reader keybinding is out of date

2010-04-16 Thread WaywardGeek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

This is a very minor bug, but also trivial to fix. In Keyboard
Shortcuts, users are able to assign "Toggle screen reader" to a
shortcut. When they do this, and press the key combination to toggle
the screen reader, the program "lsr" is executed. The only problem is
that lsr not only isn't installed, but it doesn't exist in the Ubuntu
repository either. The modern screen reader is Orca. The command to
execute should be "orca --replace", or even more robustly, 'sh -c
"killall speech-dispatcher; orca-replace"'.

[Bug 602877] [NEW] Position is not being updated when atk_text_set_caret_offset is used

2010-07-07 Thread WaywardGeek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

This bug was filed last year upstream:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=546068

We have a working, tested patch, but more investigation is going into
enhancing the new regression test case. This patch isn't in Firefox
3.6, or 3.7. However, this patch is critical for blind users who use
Ubuntu with Orca. Without this patch, Firefox is basically unusable.
If this patch could be included for Ubuntu Maverick, that would be great
news for blind Ubuntu users.

Yes, it would be very nice to have this patch applied to future versions
of Firefox for Lucid, as well as Maverick. This would simplify
supporting Firefox in Vinux 3.0, which is based on Ubuntu Lucid, since
we have to re-patch Firefox every time a new version is available.

Thanks, Attila. I'm trying to learn how speech-dispatcher works, and
I expect to be able to debug this problem in the next week or two.
I'll let you know if I have a possible fix to be tested.

I forgot about this. Willie (the Orca guy) had me do:

$ gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/interface/at-spi-corba --type
bool true

It's probably also required to get Orca working in Lucid.

[Bug 491327] Re: No module named pyatspi

2009-12-12 Thread WaywardGeek
This is caused by a stale reference to site-packages in
/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/pyatspi-cobra.pth. It refers to the
old 'site-packages' instead of 'dist-packages'. The contents should
look like:

import commands, sys; a = commands.getoutput('gconftool-2 --get
/desktop/gnome/interface/at-spi-corba'); (a == 'true') and
sys.path.insert(0, '/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/pyatspi-corba')

[Bug 468358] Re: PulseAudio and multiple users logged in at the same time

2010-01-01 Thread WaywardGeek
I can confirm this bug happens on a new Karmic install. I do "Switch
User..." and log in as another user, and that user gets no access to the
sound card. The device is not listed by System/Prefereces/Sound.

I have a similar related problem I want to solve. Blind users run
speakup, which starts as soon as the speakup_soft module is loaded.
Speakup starts pulseaudio as user speech-dispatcher, which grabs the
sound card, making it unavailable to any user logging into gnome. This
really sucks for blind users.

[Bug 498211] [NEW] ATI graphics driver fails to load

2009-12-18 Thread WaywardGeek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This problem may be specific to Lucid on my laptop: a Dell Studi 1557,
with quad i7 CPU and ATI graphics acceleration. Using
"Sytem/Administration/Hardware Drivers", an ATI driver is found, which I
installed. Once enabled, I rebooted. When the X server started, the
screen was garbled, and then switched to low-resolution mode for
recovery, at which point I disabled the ATI graphics driver. This
driver is especially important as the default driver does not manage
power in the ATI graphics card, which heats the machine and runs the fan
on high at all times. Also, the default driver does not support OpenGL
on this machine.

I've attached jockey.log, which seems to show some problems. If anyone
has suggestions on how to proceed, I'd be happy to help debug this on my
machine.

[Bug 498288] [NEW] Speakup failes to compile, and needs this 1-line fix

2009-12-18 Thread WaywardGeek
Public bug reported:

Under Lucid alpha, speakup-source fails to compile. Normally, a user
can compile and install this module with:

$ sudo apt-get install speakup-source espeakup
$ sudo m-a a-i speakup-source

However, Lucid has sensitized a bug in speakup/speakup_soft.c, and the
module fails to compile. The fix is to include sched.h in
speakup_soft.c. A patch is attached.

Please note that this package is crucial for the blind, and IMO needs to
be included in Lucid quickly, so that the blind can help us in making
Lucid the most accessible Linux ever. Without it, several blind
programmers will have to sit on the side-lines, unable to help out.

[Bug 498489] [NEW] Firefox not accessible to Orca if run from keyboard shortcut

2009-12-19 Thread WaywardGeek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

This occurs in Ubuntu Lucid alpha. Blind users use Orca to navigate
through firefox. Since they can't use a mouse to hit the firefox icon
on the top panel, they prefer to launch it with a keyboard shortcut. If
you use /System/Prefereces/Keyboard Shortcuts to assign 'Launch web
browser' to any key combination, and then launch firefox using that key
combination, then firefox is reported as an inaccessible application to
Orca. However, if we launce firefox from a gnome-terminal, it is
accessible.

[Bug 497388] Re: [Lucid] When I run any program with sudo command, the system does'nt found atk-bridge module and Orca does'nt handle the application accessibility

2009-12-19 Thread WaywardGeek
I can confirm that this happens on my Ubuntu Lucid alpha install. I
tried to see if the problem would go away by simply deleting all my ~/.*
directories and re-logging in. It does not fix the problem. I also
tried setting the same value needed to get orca working:

sudo gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/interface/at-spi-corba --type bool
true

This had no effect. However, I can enable the root account with 'sudo
passwd', and then 'su' to root, and then launch programs like synaptic,
and they are accessible.

[Bug 498889] [NEW] Audio passed to pa_simple_write not played immediately

2009-12-20 Thread WaywardGeek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

If a small sound sample (less than 4000 samples) is passed to
pa_simple_write, it is not played immediately, contrary to the
documentation for this function. This bug causes problems with Orca
when using espeak at high speed. When users press a key, and key echo
is enabled, there is no sound played until he presses another key, at
which point both keys are played. This will be a significant problem
issue for blind users of Orca.

To help track this bug down, I've created a tiny test case that shows it
very well. Just type 'make' in the keyspeak directory, and run it by
typing './keyspeak'. Just press enter a few times. Each time you press
enter, pa_simple_write is passed a small sound to play, but instead of
playing it right away, no sound is played until you press enter again,
at which point the sound is played twice. In gdb, I watched it go
through the loop and not play the sound twice in a row, but then on the
next call to getchar(), both sounds were played.

[Bug 498889] Re: Audio passed to pa_simple_write not played immediately

2009-12-21 Thread WaywardGeek
I tracked down the problem here. The pa_simple interface to pulseaudio
does provide a buffer-attribute control. If 'prebuf' is set to a single
sample, then key echos are played as soon as a key is typed. However,
speech-dispatcher is defaulting to libao, and the libao pulseaudio
driver sets prebuf to it's default value.

There are two possible fixes I see. First, we could patch libao's
pulseaudio driver to set prebuf to a single sample. That would cause
all applications using libao to start playing audio as soon as the first
sample is sent. Why this isn't already the default behavior, I don't
know, but there may be a valid reason. The other possible solution is
to rewrite the speech-dispatcher pulse module to directly call the
pa_simple interface.

Yes. This bug is probably related, but it still happens on my system,
even after the pyatspi fix.

I switched the status to invalid, since this isn't really a pulseaudio

2009-12-22 Thread WaywardGeek
This bug seems to have gone away! I did a clean reinstall of Ubuntu

Launching firefox from a keyboard shortcut now seems to work just fine.

[Bug 497388] Re: [Lucid] When I run any program with sudo command, the system does'nt found atk-bridge module and Orca does'nt handle the application accessibility

2009-12-22 Thread WaywardGeek
I did a new install of Ubuntu Lucid alpha, and upgraded to the latest
code. I still get this bug on my system, but there is no longer any
reported problem loading libatk-bridge.so. However, 'sudo synaptic'
still results in synaptic being inaccessible. However, 'sudo -E
synaptic' works! I tracked down the variable that needs to be passed to
the sudo environment: ORBIT_SOCKETDIR. If I add this line to
/etc/sudoers (using visudo) then sudo works without the -E command:

Defaultsenv_keep+="ORBIT_SOCKETDIR"

Hopefully this can be added to the /etc/sudoers file by default.

[Bug 531467] [NEW] Compiz displays upside down

2010-03-03 Thread WaywardGeek
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu Lucid Alpha, When switching to "Normal" visual effects, the
desktop is shown upside down. I found the following 2-day old thread
discussing this problem here:

http://www.mail-
archive.com/ubuntu-x-s...@lists.launchpad.net/msg48053.html

As suggested in the thread, I removed all video drivers, and compiz with
the "Remove completely" option in Synaptic. I then rebooted, and used a
repair login to install xserver-xorg-video-ati, and compiz. While this
works for other users, with other graphics drivers, it does not work for
me. This may be an ATI graphics bug.

Another clue may be that ubuntu-bug insists on reporting this as an
nvidia bug, when I don't even have the nv or nouveau drivers installed!

[Bug 507917] Re: Topics read as frame html content

2010-02-22 Thread WaywardGeek
I can confirm that Yelp does not work with Orca. I must admit I'm
dissapointed that this bug has been given "low" priority, as the blind
will not be able to access the Ubuntu help system until this is fixed.

This problem is caused by yelp switching from gecko to webkit, and
webkit remains non-accessible in any meaninful way. I recommend that
Ubuntu downgrade yelp to the version used in Karmic until the webkit
team can make significant progress.

[Bug 525669] [NEW] gnome-app-install fails to install

I am able to get update-app-install working by adding the following hack
to /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/xdg/Menu.py:

import sys
reload(sys)
sys.setdefaultencoding('UTF-8')

This allows the installation of gnome-app-install to succeed. However,
there is another bug in gnome-app-install in Lucid. When I select a
package to install, and then hit "Apply Changes", the program hangs.
The error reported is:

I've traced this into /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-

error, but I get confused pretty quick in this code.

I tracked down the next bug in gnome-app-install. The interface to the

However, there are more bugs. When I install a package, it installs ok,
but the DialogComplete dialog says it failed to install.

[Bug 455307] Re: Software listing inaccessible

2010-02-23 Thread WaywardGeek
This bug is caused by using Webkit, rather than gecko. Webkit is not
accessible. Until it is, please be sure to continue writing new
applications using gecko. We have been waiting years for webkit to
become accessible, and given the total lack of activity on their mailing
list about accessibilty, it clearly will be years more.

For Vinux, I am going to switch back to gnome-app-install, even if I
have to fix it myself.

[Bug 520952] Re: Tracebacks when upgrading from Karmic

2010-02-18 Thread WaywardGeek
This is caused by some UTF-8 data somehow getting into the menu data.
Default encoding is "ascii" in python, and when python tries to
manipulate the UTF-8 menu string, it crashes. The program that is
failing is /usr/sbin/update-app-install, in
/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/xdg/Menu.py. If I add at the top of this
file:

import sys
reload(sys)
sys.setdefaultencoding('UTF-8')

Then the update-app-install program seems to work. When I run gnome-
app-install, everything works until I hit the "Apply" button, where it
crashes with:

Application Switcher". It's probably time to make the default
"Application Switcher", and to reassign the "Tab" key to
next_panel, rather than next_window(all), and "Tab
to next_panel. I've tested this lightly with Orca, and it seems to work
well.

[Bug 318942] Re: no sound from speakers on HP Mini 1000 (hda-intel, IDT 92HD75B2X5)

2009-09-05 Thread WaywardGeek
I've added jaunty-proposed as Martin Pitt requested, and apt-get upgrade
on my HP Mini 1000. Speakers work! Front Mic does not :-(

I have not put much effort into tracking down the mic issue, and my
system is far from a fresh install. After reboot, speaker is mute by
default, until I manually enable it in volume control.

[Bug 318942] Re: no sound from speakers on HP Mini 1000 (hda-intel, IDT 92HD75B2X5)

2009-09-05 Thread WaywardGeek
After setting inputs to line and line, the front mic works, but very
poorly. The noise is terrible. Also, after each reboot, I have to fix
the volume control settings all over again.

[Bug 468677] [NEW] Pulseaudio causes 1/2 sec delay in Orca screen reader

2009-11-01 Thread WaywardGeek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

There is about a 1/2 second delay when using Orca with pulseaudio in
Karmic. This delay is unacceptable to the blind community, since it
makes key echo useless, as you have to hit a key, and then wait for it
to be read, and then hit another key. In response, blind/visually
impaired people generally try to remove pulseaudio from Karmic, with
varying success. However, those who have succeeded in reverting to alsa
report much quicker Orca response. There are no blind users who
actually use Orca as installed by default in Karmic as their main
system, so far as I know, because of this problem.

One potential "quick fix" to this problem might be to introduce a
package that would uninstall pulseaudio and install alsa-oss, while
fixing up the various related issues, such as modifying
System/Preferences/Sound, and getting the volume control working.
Preferably, the cause of this extreme delay could be tracked down and
eliminated.

Until this is addressed, Karmic will remain one of the worst linux
operating systems for accessibility by the blind. Vinux, for example,
continues to be forced to be based on Debian, even though most people in
the blind community would prefer an accessible version of Ubuntu.
