[Bug 1679622] Re: [unity8] aisleriot crashes with SIGABRT

Hi, is there something specific you did to reproduce this? Would you
mind installing libgtk-3-0-dbgsym and libmirclient9-dbgsym and trying
again?

[Bug 1679236] [NEW] Anjuta crashes when creating a window in the UI editor

2017-04-03 Thread William Hua
Public bug reported:

Run anjuta, create a new UI file. Clicking on the window toolbar button
causes the following crash:

(anjuta:1635): Gdk-WARNING **:
/build/gtk+3.0-C8PvPE/gtk+3.0-3.22.11/./gdk/x11/gdkwindow-x11.c:5573
drawable is not a native X11 window

(anjuta:1635): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'anjuta' received an X Window System
error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 16619 error_code 3 request_code 20 (core protocol)
minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped)

[Bug 1674477] Re: gnome screenshot gtk-mir crashes on taking the shot under Mir

2017-03-23 Thread William Hua
> On the other hand, persisting with an architecture where apps don't
work unless processes other than the shell happen to be running is a bit
nasty in my opinion. And similarly anything that depends on a bus is
ugly IMHO. I've lost count of the number of times in recent months where
GTK apps refused to start because they were timing out waiting for some
process or bus to become available that didn't exist in Mir.

This is something I've thought about before too with gtk, and I think it
comes down to whether you want your platform modular where you can pick
and choose the parts you want, or you want to define your platform to be
one monolithic unit. We have gtk that depends on libmirclient and
content-hub, but what happens if you have a mir server but no content-
hub? Should that situation be possible?

> That all said... why don't we just declare gnome-screenshot
unsupported if it's really just a client of gnome-shell. Doesn't Unity8
have other adequate screenshotting mechanisms?

I'm wondering this too. Print screen doesn't seem to do anything in U8.

It does seem weird that it isn't just baked directly into gnome-shell
since it's just a front-end for that interface. Maybe it was intended to
allow gnome-screenshot to be usable on other DEs. But yes, basically do
we want gnome-screenshot to work on U8? And if so, do we want that to be
the default way of doing it? U8 can still decide to support gnome-
screenshot even if it provides its own.

[Bug 1674477] Re: gnome screenshot gtk-mir crashes on taking the shot under Mir

2017-03-21 Thread William Hua
I don't know if that would be the easiest approach. It sounds to me like
having U8 implement that dbus interface would be the easiest and least
invasive solution, but then again, I'm not the one volunteering for that
:)

Is there some mir client api for scraping the screen? I'm worried about
whether or not that kind of change would be accepted upstream (there's
no wayland-specific code in gnome-screenshot). Also, how does it look
from a security perspective? The nice thing about that interface is that
the screenshot app never has direct access to the pixel data in the
first place (it's just file names that U8 would save the image data
directly to), and access to the interface could be restricted via
apparmor dbus rules.

[Bug 1662602] [NEW] GTK+ windows don't render when larger than 478x478

2017-02-07 Thread William Hua
Public bug reported:

PPA containing a more recent GTK+:
https://launchpad.net/~attente/+archive/ubuntu/gtk-mir

Under U8, GTK+ windows don't render when the width and height are both
>= 479.

If the app starts at a size larger than that, the window will initially
appear entirely black.

Once resized < 479 in either dimension, the window will render properly.

After that, when resizing larger than 478x478, the window only upscales
the most recent framebuffer contents.

I haven't 100% confirmed that this is not GTK+. However:

- This bug does not occur when tested with miral-shell
- GTK+ is receiving configure events for surface resizes
- GTK+ is re-creating cairo surfaces that match the larger size
- GTK+ is still calling mir_buffer_stream_swap_buffers_sync at larger sizes

[Bug 1641380] Re: chromium-browser: ERR_CERTIFICATE_TRANSPARENCY_REQUIRED for Symantec certs

2017-02-03 Thread William Hua
Hi Chad, thanks for this, is this fix going to be released in zesty
soon? It seems to have been stuck in zesty-proposed for some time...
also, is there a reason that the updates are going to yakkety first
before zesty?

There's some platform-specific code in firefox itself that's trying to

for x11, wayland, and broadway. It needs to be fixed in upstream

[Bug 1643734] Re: privilege escalation via ptrace (CVE-2016-8659)

2017-01-13 Thread William Hua
Hi, I'm not sure what I've done wrong here, but I've added the sleep at
line 1707 after the drop_caps call and tried to strace the child process
without success.

This is the output I got:

strace: attach: ptrace(PTRACE_ATTACH, ...): Operation not permitted
Could not attach to process. If your uid matches the uid of the target
process, check the setting of /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope, or try
again as the root user. For more details, see /etc/sysctl.d/10-ptrace.conf

But since it isn't clear how to confirm the new release doesn't contain
the CVE anyways, could we mark this as verification-done and accept it
into Ubuntu Yakkety?

Is SRU'ing this back to trusty difficult? The only reason I would want

[Bug 1643734] Re: privilege escalation via ptrace (CVE-2016-8659)

2017-01-05 Thread William Hua
In the context of LP: #1649330, I don't see any regressions from
bubblewrap 0.1.5-1~ubuntu16.10.0 in yakkety-proposed, but I've only
tested the simple case there within a VM. So:

bwrap --dev-bind / / --dev-bind ~ /snap bash

and then...

ls /snap
touch /snap/whatever
exit

then...

ls ~

still works.

I haven't tested to see that the CVE is fixed though, is there a short
list of steps I can try to confirm the hostname can be changed?

2016-12-13 Thread William Hua
I tested it from the PPA here [1], in a Xenial VM. It's just a copy of
what's currently in zesty archive, with an extra changelog entry for the
xenial release. I'd prefer if we could just copy the package in zesty
directly as it doesn't have release info in the changelog.

I tested it with:

exit

then...

ls ~

[Bug 1649330] [NEW] [SRU] bubblewrap unavailable on xenial

2016-12-12 Thread William Hua
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

I'm writing a snapcraft plugin that uses bubblewrap for sandboxing
purposes, but since bubblewrap isn't available on xenial while snapcraft
is, it's currently blocked from landing.

Besides that, bubblewrap is a generally useful tool for running commands
in a sandbox, similar to a chroot, but can be run by an unprivileged
user, or like lxc, but more lightweight.

[Test Case]

Type bwrap in a xenial terminal. The command isn't found.

[Regression Potential]

This package is already available in yakkety and zesty, and it depends
only on libc6 and libselinux1. It contains no services.

The bwrap binary is setuid root.

[Other Info]

>From the project page:

"The maintainers of this tool believe that it does not, even when used
in combination with typical software installed on that distribution,
allow privilege escalation. It may increase the ability of a logged in
user to perform denial of service attacks, however.

In particular, bubblewrap uses PR_SET_NO_NEW_PRIVS to turn off setuid
binaries, which is the traditional way to get out of things like
chroots."

[Bug 1420334] Re: [enhancement] Missing client API for relative surface movement

2016-09-06 Thread William Hua
> Do we really want to support client side decorations?

Just to comment on this one point, I think CSD is just something we must
support and there's no way around it. There are already a lot of GNOME
apps rendering widgets in the header bar in a way that just simply can't
be done with SSD. Add to that applications like Google Chrome and Steam
which want full control over their rendering and still allow the user to
move their windows by dragging on the client area.

[Bug 1590508] Re: SRU more minor fixes to GNOME Software

2016-06-16 Thread William Hua
Use snap name instead of summary
Don't curate popular snaps

** Patch added:
"gnome-software_3.20.1+git20160616.1.a708c4e-ubuntu-xenial-0ubuntu1.debdiff"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-software/+bug/1590508/+attachment/4685045/+files/gnome-software_3.20.1+git20160616.1.a708c4e-ubuntu-xenial-0ubuntu1.debdiff

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

Improve the usability of GNOME Software by fixing the following bugs:

- * Snaps not displaying human-readable names (LP: #169)
  * Some KDE4 applications cannot be launched (e.g. kolourpaint) (LP: #1575529)
  * Added error checking for the case where the ratings and reviews server
isn't accessible
  * Fix a couple of CSS errors
  * Fix calculation of review ratings (LP: #1581938)
  * Make the app folder dialog work again (LP: #1590115)
  * Remove broken symlink of xdg-app-reviews plugin (LP: #1573052)
- * Promote curated snaps on overview shell
  * Disable redundant notification (LP: #1592382)
  * Disable app folders feature when run outside GNOME (LP: #1590152)

  [Test Cases]

- * Search for "ubuntu-calculator" from the overview shell. The name should be
"Ubuntu Calculator application for the Unity 7 desktop", not
"ubuntu-calculator-app"
  * Install, then attempt to launch kolourpaint from the details shell
  * Disconnect from the network, then attempt to submit a review
  * Run gnome-software from the command line, verify there's no warning "failed
to open plugin /usr/lib/gs-plugins-9/libgs_plugin_xdg_app_reviews.so"

  [Regression Potential]

[Bug 1592136] [NEW] [SRU] dh-make doesn't recognize 'mit' as copyright license

2016-06-13 Thread William Hua
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 * Passing '-c mit' to dh_make doesn't work because it isn't recognized
in the list of licenses.

[Test Case]

 * Download a source package via apt-get source or pull-lp-source
 * Delete the debian directory
 * Run 'dh_make -c mit'
 * The license will be listed as 'blank'

[Regression Potential]

 * Risk of regression is low, the fix is one line, and already available
in Yakkety Yak

[Other Info]

 * Debian bug report is here:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=814845

** Affects: dh-make (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1572606] [NEW] Doesn't indicate that an operation is happening in the background

2016-04-20 Thread William Hua
Public bug reported:

GNOME Software does some time-consuming operations without indicating
that they're in-progress. Notable examples are after updating an
application(s), the updated application(s) still appear in the updates
list momentarily until the aptd operation is finished, and just after
updating the AppStream cache. It takes some time before the changes are
reflected in the user interface.

[Bug 1571770] [NEW] Returns 500 when it can't find mounted snap

2016-04-18 Thread William Hua
Public bug reported:

Somehow snapd can get into a state where it always returns 500.

The request was:

curl --silent --unix-socket /run/snapd.socket 'GET /v2/snaps/ubuntu-
clock-app' | python -m json.tool

The response was:

{
"result": {
"message": "cannot read snap details: cannot find mounted snap
\"ubuntu-clock-app\" at revision 2"
},
"status": "Internal Server Error",
"status-code": 500,
"type": "error"
}

I'm not sure how it gets into that state though.

[Bug 1558816] [NEW] Segfault when org.freedesktop.fwupd service doesn't exist

2016-03-19 Thread William Hua
Public bug reported:

In the fwupd plugin, gs_plugin_add_updates() can return FALSE (when
org.freedesktop.fwupd service doesn't exist) without setting the error,
causing a segfault. The fix is to steal the error_local and set error
manually.

[Bug 1554023] Re: Perform an apt update if there is no appstream available

2016-03-09 Thread William Hua
Ah, makes sense, thanks for the explanation!

> So ideally, if no metadata is detected (not-installed application
count is zero or close to zero)

How do we define close to zero? On my system, there are 5 apps that
always seem to have AS_APP_STATE_UNKNOWN:

gs_plugin_appstream_startup: 8: 'UEFI-dummy-dev0' ('UEFI Updates'): 0
gs_plugin_appstream_startup: 9: 'com.via.VL811.firmware' ('VL811 Firmware'): 0
gs_plugin_appstream_startup: 10: 'com.via.VL811+.firmware' ('VL811+ Firmware'): 0
gs_plugin_appstream_startup: 11: 'com.via.VL812.firmware' ('VL812 Firmware'): 0
gs_plugin_appstream_startup: 12: 'com.via.VL812_B2.firmware' ('VL812 B2
Firmware'): 0

So I'm not really sure how to precisely define when an apt update is
required or not.

[Bug 1554023] Re: Perform an apt update if there is no appstream available

2016-03-09 Thread William Hua
Just trying to think through what the correct approach is here. Is there
a reason why are we going through appstream to get the list of packages
instead of looking directly in /var/lib/apt/lists and
/var/lib/dpkg/status for the package info? The apt plugin is already
somewhat doing this (I'm assuming apt/dpkg still properly update
/var/lib/* after installation without needing an update, but I'm not
sure).
