[Bug 922196] Re: openshot cuts off the last second of video when exporting to bluray

2018-09-14 Thread William Pietri
Same, also on 16.04 LTS with OpenShot 1.4.3. Exporting to the YouTube HD
target.

My workaround was to duplicate a clip, slice off a single frame, and put it 1
second after the end of my video.

[Bug 1264102] Re: VLC takes long time to start playing a video file given as GVFS path in a directory containing a lot of files

2015-12-12 Thread William Pietri
Perhaps VLC could by default start playing without having discovered
whether subtitles exist? That wouldn't eliminate the problem, but it
would be experienced by a much smaller group of people, and the problem
would go from "video doesn't play" to "sometimes subtitles take a while
to start", which would be lower impact.

[Bug 1264493] Re: No Paste option in web page entries

2015-01-04 Thread William Pietri
For desktop 14.04 LTS I can confirm that Chromium apps are a reasonable
solution to the problem here. Following that, I now have what I wanted,
which is my calendar in the dock. Full instructions:
https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95710?hl=en

I'd like to add that from the desktop user perspective, shipping
something like this seems like terrible product management. I get that
you need to experiment. But please don't have an LTS release eagerly
suggesting I use features that are below a reasonable usability bar
(like calendars and email clients where paste doesn't work). On three
separate occasions I've tried running down the problem. It was only this
time I figured out the right incantations to find this bug, only to
discover that this was known not to work, and that was apparently the
intended release behavior.

Very similar symptoms for me too, also starting this morning. This is on

attached the one for at-spi2-registryd in hopes that it's helpful.

audio.

[Bug 1203194] [NEW] app and context menus hidden behind windows

2013-07-19 Thread William Pietri
Public bug reported:

I'm not totally sure this is a Unity bug vs something else, so my
apologies if this is the wrong package.

What I thought happened was that the system and context menus stopped
working. But after some flailing, I realized that the menus worked fine,
and you could even click on them. It's just that they were appearing
behind the regular windows on the screen. Screenshots of both menu
issues are attached.

This is on a system all of 3 days old, with a fresh 12.04.2
installation. Not sure what triggered it, and logging out fixed it.

[Bug 982889] Re: X trying to start before plymouth has finished using the drm driver

2013-06-05 Thread William Pietri
Thanks, Steve. The box was set up by a vendor (Emperor Linux), so
perhaps they did something custom with the splash screens when I got it
18 months ago.

Aesthetically, making something vital (UI startup) depend on something
decorative (splash screens) seems odd. Perhaps future versions of this
can be made more robust.

In case somebody else with a similar problem finds this bug report, I
verified the problem by using debsums

  % sudo debsums -a plymouth
  [most package items ok]
debsums: missing file /etc/init/plymouth-log.conf (from plymouth package)
debsums: missing file /etc/init/plymouth-upstart-bridge.conf (from plymouth
package)
  /etc/init/plymouth.conf
OK
debsums: missing file /etc/init/plymouth-stop.conf (from plymouth package)
  /etc/init/plymouth-ready.conf
OK
debsums: missing file /etc/init/plymouth-splash.conf (from plymouth package)

And the precise command I used to fix the problem was:
  % sudo apt-get --reinstall -o Dpkg::Options::=--force-confmiss install
plymouth

That put back the missing files.

I also did sudo debsums -s to make sure nothing else important was
missing.

[Bug 982889] Re: X trying to start before plymouth has finished using the drm driver

2013-06-04 Thread William Pietri
Hi! I suspect this fix may be causing a problem for me. I'm using an up
to date 12.04.2 LTS setup that worked fine until now.

My symptom is that upon reboot, I end up with a black screen. By hitting
Control-Alt-F1, I can get things working properly with sudo service
start lightdm. Looking at the logs, everything seems fine, except that
/var/log/upstart/plymouth-ready-startup.log says status: Unknown job:
plymouth-splash.

Running initctl check-config -w gets me similar comments:
  setvtrgb
start on: unknown job plymouth-splash
  plymouth-ready
start-on: unknown job plymouth splash

I'm glad to debug further, but I can't quite figure out how this is
supposed to work; the correct relationship between events is opaque to
me.

[Bug 530176] Re: Transmission does not respond/Icon remains in notification area after closing program

2010-11-08 Thread William Pietri
I had this problem, or at least a similar problem, too.

I left Transmission running over the weekend to seed. When I tried
quitting it this morning, it said to hold on while it was uploading
stats to the tracker. After a couple of hours I noticed it hadn't
finished, so I closed the window. After a bit I got the dialog saying it
wasn't going quietly; I told it to go ahead and kill the app.

That still didn't do anything, and ps still showed it consuming 100% of
the CPU. I repeatedly tried killing it, both normally and -9. The
process still appeared to be running, and my load was high (over 5).
Looking further I saw that the CPU-eating process had a parent, so I
tried to kill -9 both of those. It didn't work, but shortly after that
the machine locked up and I had to reboot.

I thought it might be just my machine, but Google suggests a number of
people report similar symptoms, so it seems like there's some unhappy
interaction between Transmission and the kernel.

I'm using a reasonably fresh Ubuntu box that is otherwise unproblematic.

[Bug 596123] [NEW] nonexistent package mentioned in /etc/skel/.profile

2010-06-18 Thread William Pietri
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

Hi! I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. In /etc/skel/.profile, it says

# the default umask is set in /etc/profile; for setting the umask
# for ssh logins, install and configure the libpam-umask package.

This is mildly incorrect. The actual package needed has changed to
libpam-modules, which at least on my machine, was installed by default.
Perhaps it's better to point them something like the pam_umask(8) manaul
page.

Wait, that's not quite correct. Those are the versions as of the time I
reported the bug. The new packages are:

shared-mime-info 0.60-1
libcups2 1.3.9-17ubuntu3
libc6 2.9-4ubuntu6

libmodplug0c2 1:0.8.4-3ubuntu1.1

libqtcore4 4.5.0-0ubuntu4.1
libqtgui4 4.5.0-0ubuntu4.1
libglu1-mesa 7.4-0ubuntu3.1

Also, I'm going to leave the status alone, as I don't know the status of
this on AMD64.

As of a recent auto-upgrade, this has magically gotten better. According
to dpkg.log, these are the related packages that were changed:

libqtcore4 4.5.0-0ubuntu4
libglu1-mesa 7.4-0ubuntu3
libcups2 1.3.9-17ubuntu1
shared-mime-info 0.60-1
libmodplug0c2 1:0.8.4-3ubuntu1
libqtgui4 4.5.0-0ubuntu4
libgl1-mesa-glx 7.4-0ubuntu3

I'll try to close this bug myself; if I can't, whomever evaluates this

[Bug 367702] [NEW] VLC menus mangled

2009-04-26 Thread William Pietri
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

I've recently upgraded from Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.04.

My problem appears to be with VLC 0.9.9a-2ubuntu1.

When I launch VLC, either from the command line, from a menu, or by
inserting a DVD, all text is corrupted, including in menus and dialogs.
To the extent that I can use it, the app otherwise appears fine. No
other application I have tried appears to have this problem.

To make the issue clearer, I have attached a screenshot of the
corruption.

I'm glad to perform further investigations as requested, but I have no
idea what might be causing this.
