[Bug 968533] Re: Alt-tab to Firefox sends Firefox to 100% CPU; unity-panel-service to 80% CPU and hud-service to 20-80% CPU

2013-12-07 Thread Xavier Robin
@pieleric: I confirm it has gotten worse in 13.10.
The BookmarkMenuHider didn't do anything for me, probably because most of my
bookmarks are sorted and thus still in the menu. after installing the addon.
The ui.use_unity_menubar trick did it, but I agree it is a pity it also
disables HUD completely. Ideally the bookmarks should not be exposed to HUD, as
they are already accessible through Firefox address bar (Ctrl+L).

@holocronweaver: this looks essentially like the same bug, why create a
new one that is going to be closed as duplicate?

Same on a Dell Latitude e6530 with an i7 3720M on Intel Graphics. I
disabled Optimus (thus switching to the nvidia graphics) and didn't have
any freeze since, so it looks related to the Intel HD 4000.

[Bug 104525] Re: default ntp.conf should use pool.ntp.org servers

2011-01-17 Thread Xavier Robin
I got this answer today:

Sorry about the late response. I really wanted someone from the
ubuntu project to set it up -- but I guess that's not forthcoming, so I
approved the zone anyway and we'll see what happens.

And in another email:

Your vendor pool zone ubuntu has been setup. The
hostnames are below. They will be active within a few hours.
0.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org
1.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org
2.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org
3.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org

Please subscribe to the (announce-only, very low traffic)
ntppool-vendors list at Google Groups. We recommend everyone in your
organization involved with this is subscribed there.
http://groups.google.com/group/ntppool-vendors

If you are a commercial organization/product/company consider
contributing back to the pool so we can keep the service sustainable
 even with the commercial usage:
 http://www.pool.ntp.org/vendors/contribute.html

If you do not, you seriously diminish the chances that we can continue
to offer this service to you.

 Kind regards,

 Ask Bjoern Hansen

So we just have to change that in ntp.conf. I guess it could greatly simplify
the GUI, too...

I think it could be a good idea to put a note in the conf file to
recommend people to join the pool. Maybe ntp.ubuntu.com could be
included?

Finally, the developer of the pool mentioned wishing a contact from the
Ubuntu project to be involved… who should be contacted?

[Bug 104525] Re: default ntp.conf should use pool.ntp.org servers

2010-11-13 Thread Xavier Robin
I fully agree with comment 6 by Perry E. Metzger. Switching to ntp pool
should not be a security issue as bad servers are automatically filtered
from the pool. Additionally, bad servers are detected by the NTP
algorithm if enough servers are selected (they are called
falsetickers, see
http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Support/SelectingOffsiteNTPServers#Section_5.3.3.).
4 servers should be enough for most cases.

[Bug 674868] [NEW] [time-admin] ntp server selection should not suggest stratum 1 servers

2010-11-13 Thread Xavier Robin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

In the Time and Date configuration window (documented on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuTime), the servers suggested
in the Time server window is inadequate.

Many of the servers suggested are stratum 1 servers (for servers around
Switzerland for instance I found out ntps1-0.cs.tu-berlin.de, ntps1-1.cs
.tu-berlin.de, ntps1-2.uni-erlangen.de, canon.inria.fr, chronos.cru.fr,
ntp.cesnet.cz, time.ien.it, ntp0.nl.net and ntp1.nl.net to be stratum
1).

Stratum 1 servers are servers directly connected to a reference clock.
Stratum 1 time servers should be used only by stratum 2 time servers
(serving a large number of clients and / or stratum 3 servers). Stratum
1 servers should not be used by terminal clients (see
http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Servers/RulesOfEngagement) and should
not be advertised in the server selection window. Failing to do so will
increase stratum 1 servers load and consequently reduce their
availability, reducing the accuracy of the whole system.

Stratum 1 servers should be detected, removed from this selection
window, and replaced by stratum 2 (or even 3) servers which are good
enough for most cases. Ideally the NTP pool should be used (see bug
#104525).

** Affects: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu)

[Bug 674868] Re: [time-admin] ntp server selection should not suggest stratum 1 servers

2010-11-13 Thread Xavier Robin
Thanks for this quick answer.
Here is the modified file.

I found the following 20 servers to be stratum 1 (with ntpdate -q and a perl
regex):
ntp1.arnes.si
ntp2.arnes.si
ntp.cesnet.cz
ntps1-0.cs.tu-berlin.de
ntps1-1.cs.tu-berlin.de
ntps1-2.uni-erlangen.de
canon.inria.fr
chronos.cru.fr
clock.cuhk.edu.hk
time.ien.it
cronos.cenam.mx
ntp0.nl.net
ntp1.nl.net
ntp2.nl.net
ntp.certum.pl
vega.cbk.poznan.pl
time1.stupi.se
goodtime.ijs.si
ntp2.ja.net
laikas.pfi.lt

This is unrelated but the following servers were unreachable (ntpdate returns
no server suitable for synchronization found):
wuarchive.wustl.edu
gilbreth.ecn.purdue.edu
molecule.ecn.purdue.edu
bernina.ethz.ch
time.esec.com.au
ntpa2.kph.uni-mainz.de

[Bug 477206] Re: gnome-panel indicator-applet crashed with SIGSEGV in calloc()

2010-04-30 Thread Xavier Robin
Sorry for the delay: my mail provider was down and I didn't receive the
notifications.

This crash happened again today. I'd be glad to provide Valgrind data, but I
have two problems:
- The crash happens on startup, before I can launch Valgrind.
- I don't know which command to run to start the indicator-applet from
valgrind. Should I kill and reload gnome-panel? I tried that but it
automatically restarts before I can launch it again with Valgrind.

Some practical advice would be welcome.

[Bug 432876] Re: Icons missing in Firefox searchbox drop down list (karmic)

2009-11-01 Thread Xavier Robin
There are basically two ways of fixing this bug.
1) As stated before, under System - Preferences - Appearance check Show
icons in menus. After restarting Firefox, the icons should be there again.
2) If you don't want the icons in other applications, and you feel they are
missing only in Firefox search bar, install the Stylish extension [1] and add
the following as a new style:

 #search-popupset .menu-iconic-left {
 visibility: visible!important;
 }

note: remove #search-popupset if you want the icons in all Firefox
menus.

I believe this is a bug in Firefox, which should be reported upstream.
Firefox should display these icons even if Show icons in menus is
unchecked. I opened it:

[Bug 193578] Re: Basic graphics operations makes audio skip (1 sec pauses)

2009-04-27 Thread Xavier Robin
martin a écrit :
 Easy to repro:

 1. wget http://files.minimum.se/sample.ogg -O ~/Desktop/sample.ogg
 2. double click sample.ogg to play it in totem
 3. run x11perf -compwinwin500

When running sample.ogg in rhythmbox while running the x11perf test, the
sound wasn't interrupted for me, even though Xorg used 100% CPU.
Probably the test window wasn't large enough, but x11perf doesn't
provide a larger test.

It would be very useful if everyone affected by this bug posted the
output of lspci -nn | grep VGA so we can understand if this is a
regression for all graphics card or just for one brand (i.e. intel
driver) or even for just one chipset.

xav...@ubuntu:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation G71 [GeForce 7300
GS] [10de:01df] (rev a1)

Alexander Sack a écrit :
Can you reproduce this with other sound applications?

No, as stated before only rhythmbox is affected. Totem, Listen, VLC are fine.
If I play sounds at the same time in rhythmbox and totem, totem continues to
play even when rhythmbox is stopped.

Also if ALSA is used instead of PulseAudio, the bug persist.

Given these two reasons, I think it isn't a PulseAudo bug, but rather a
Rhythmbox one.

[Bug 193578] Re: Scrolling Firefox interrupts Rhythmbox audio

2009-04-26 Thread Xavier Robin
I can see the same problem here.
I have got an AMD athlon 64x2 (duo core)@2.2GHz, 2Gio RAM and 2Gio swap.
Motherboard is an Asus M2N DH with an integrated HDA sound chipset from nvidia.
Graphic card is a nvidia geforce 7300 GS.
Ubuntu version is Intrepid 64bits.

The reproducibility is very problematic. You need a heavy page where
firefox is slow to scroll in the first place. For example, a page on
deviant art (eg. http://brute-ua.deviantart.com/art/Take-a-seat-81523879
) with the collect banner opened (may be available only when you're
logged in). Then you have to seize the scrollbar and swing your mouse up
and down violently (ie you have to go really top to bottom and back to
top again), several times (that can be twice, or 10 times depending on
your luck) and very fast (don't wait for the bottom of the page to
display before you're already on top and bottom again, preferably
several times). I don't think scrolling with the mouse wheel is
sufficient to trigger any sound interruption.

This isn't a normal use of Firefox, but it is needed to reproduce the
problem. For a normal-use, you need to be loading several tabs in
Firefox, and switch tab or scoll down rapidly in a long loading page, or
maximize-minimize Firefox quickly, or most likely several of these (ie.
quickly scrolling down a heavy loading page with several other tabs
loading in the background and then double-click on the Firefox icon in
the taskbar to minimize and maximize Firefox, all that in less than 1
second or so). Even so, I don't see this bug more than once or twice a
day.

I cannot reproduce it on lighter pages. A fixed element is recommended, if
possible transparent) Even a javascript test such as the Acid3 test
(http://acid3.acidtests.org/) or the sunspider test
(http://www2.webkit.org/perf/sunspider-0.9/sunspider.html ) doesn't trigger a
sound interruption. I guess that owner of faster computers need to find even
worse test cases to be able to reproduce it.
Also I should precise that it is better to work in full screen (preferably
with a big one, 1600x1200 for me, and with F11 fullscreen on) rather than with
a smaller Firefox window. If I resize Firefox to use only half of the
horizontal space (around 600px) I'm not able to hear any sound interruption.

Running a heavy benchmark such as one in hardinfo doesn't stop sound,
nor does sound encoding with SoundConverter (using 2 procs.). To the
contrary, I would say it was easier to make firefox interrupt sound when
the system isn't doing any other computation. With sound converter
working, Firefox scrolls slower but doesn't interrupt the sound anymore.

Stopping compiz and using metacity instead (System Preferences
Appearance setting no visual effect) doesn't completely prevent sound
interruption. Actually it doesn't even seem to reduce the problem.

I tried to use Alsa instead of pulseaudio as proposed above. This didn't
reduce the problem.

I also tried to renice rhythmbox process (with sudo renice 15) but that
didn't change anything.

Only enabling crossfading (seemingly) completely stopped sound
interruption.

If I look at a terminal with top running when the problem occurs, I
can see that Xorg is around 50% CPU and Firefox around 30%.

Finally I don't think it is related to the sound server. If I play in
another player such as Totem or Listen, it isn't interrupted. If I play
two sounds, one in rhythmbox and one in totem, and then I scroll in
Firefox, only rhythmbox's playing is interrupted, and I hear only the
sound played in totem.

So I believe that could be a problem of concurrence between Xorg and
rhytmbox, triggered by Firefox.

2009-01-31 Thread Xavier Robin
Same problem here.
I had previously manually modified my menu.lst to add booting option to ubuntu
8.04. However, the previous kernel update (2.6.27-9-generic) ran smoothly with
these modifications.
When I saw there was problem I fist backed up my menu.lst. I attach it here as
*menu.lst-bak-2009-01-31.xavier*.

Then I used the merge 3 files options, then something crashed (don't
know exactly what) and I clicked on the notification toolbar button. In
the update progress window I got errors saying that the kernel wasn't
configured. I will attach output in *apt.log*.

Then in synaptic I reinstalled linux-image-generic and it worked fine.
Log attached as *apt2.log*

Finally I looked in my menu.lst and it was still unmodified. So I
duplicated the 8 lines for 2.6.27-9-generic and changed it to
2.6.27-11-generic. Now I'm going to try to reboot and see if it is
working.

Restart was successful. Kernel is correctly installed and it seems my
modifications to menu.lst were ok (uname -r gives 2.6.27-11-generic)

Some notes that might be interesting:
- Like the reporter, I'm using ubuntu 8.10 in french language. I don't know if
it is relevant or only a coincidence.
- Output logs are in french. Sorry for non-ascii characters that are completely
messed up by launchpad. If you need a translation of some output, please ask.
- Unlike the reporter, I'm using a x86_64 (64bit) kernel on an amd.
- I removed old kernel 2.6.27-7 (linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic
linux-headers-2.6.27-7). The process went successfully without error.
- Attaching my current working version of menu.lst in case it can help!

[Bug 226840] Re: Live bookmarks not cookie aware

2009-01-25 Thread Xavier Robin
I can confirm that it is specific to third-party cookie disabling (even if it
is clearly not a third-party here)
I opened an upstream bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=475238
It is not specific of Ubuntu and was verified also on a Windows system.
Therefore I think it should be fixed upstream.

[Bug 309941] Re: ubiquity crashed with InstallStepError in configure_timezone()

2008-12-20 Thread Xavier Robin
Update failed (not enough space on I-don't-know-which drive).

So I restarted the LiveCD and launched the procedure again, but this time
without selecting any user data import. This time it was successful.
I should note that the /home from which I was trying to import data was the
same as the new home, so that may be the source of the problem (importing
data from/to the same place) (this home located in /dev/sdb6 is now shared by
an ubuntu 8.04 32bits on /dev/sda2 and by my new install of Intrepid 8.10 on
/dev/sdb1).

It seems quite similar to Bug #234835 but not exactly a duplicate.

[Bug 53603] Package artwiz-cursor fails to uninstall

2006-07-21 Thread Xavier Robin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: artwiz-cursor

The Package artwiz-cursor fails to uninstall il my Ubuntu Dapper Drake.
Synaptic throws an error and artwiz-cursor is only half-uninstalled.
Xorg fails to restart after that (error that cursor is missing). I have to
reinstall artwiz-cursor to be able to restart X.

Here is the log of the uninstallation in a terminal using apt-get remove
(half in french, sorry, please note that the post-removal script returns
an error 2) :

Suppression de artwiz-cursor ...
Removing `diversion of /usr/share/X11/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz to
/usr/share/X11/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz-artwiz by artwiz-cursor'
update-alternatives: unable to make
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/index.theme.dpkg-tmp a symlink to
 artwiz-cursor
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I can note that the update-alternatives part uses the path
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/ when in Dapper I think it is in
/usr/share/icons/default. Don't know if it is really the source of the problem
though.

** Affects: xfonts-artwiz (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Untriaged
 Status: Unconfirmed
