[Bug 1627710] Re: sudo hp-setup fails

2018-02-18 Thread yossarian holmberg
for anyone still running into this problem, i worked around it today by
getting the latest HPLIP from https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-
imaging-and-printing (i downloaded 3.17.11) and when installing it i
told it to not enable PC/network fax support (it asks near the beginning
of the install); also remember to let it uninstall your old version of
HPLIP, and allow it to install the dependencies it wants. the setup of
the printer continued fine after that, and i now have printing and
scanning working properly on this HP M1212nf laser printer i'm testing
on a kubuntu 16.04 LTS station. i used xsane to test the scanning
capabilities. if you don't need PC/network fax capabilities, this
worked for me to get the rest of it working. -- yossman.net/2018-02-18

[Bug 432706] Re: cannot change governor from command line

2010-11-03 Thread yossarian holmberg

'ondemand' setting, for anyone who wants to try that, last machine i
used this fix on was a toshiba C650D laptop with ubuntu 10.04.

[Bug 432706] Re: cannot change governor from command line

2010-11-03 Thread yossarian holmberg
throwing my two cents in; i agree 100% with #23 (dan k.) -- the CPU
frequency scaling control capability and applet is one of my favorite
things about linux and the ubuntu/GNOME desktop environment, and i
attempt to enable it on every single machine i put ubuntu onto. i have
personally witnessed the big difference it can make on some desktop
systems i've deployed, in terms of how hot they run, and how much power
they use, especially when online 24/7..

have the applet default to 'performance' mode if 'ondemand' is too slow,
sure, but don't break 'ondemand' on purpose! do you really think the
majority of your userbase is too ignorant to do two mouse clicks to
change the setting themselves? and if so, why do you even still list
'ondemand' as a choice, if you're just going to leave it broken? the
ubuntu desktop installation doesn't even put the CPU frequency scaling
applet onto the panel by default, you have to put it there yourself.
doesn't it stand to reason that if you put it there yourself, you could
probably also figure out which of the automatic governor settings you're
OK with using?

i would definitely appreciate having that choice back, and i can see
there are still more people on forums asking about this. to the people
who complain ondemand is too slow: put it in performance mode, leave it
there, and be happy you have a choice about the matter, because right
now some of us have lost our ability to choose to do otherwise, which
isn't right.

final point: are we trying to be more environmentally friendly, or not?
anything that reduces excess heat and power usage is good, in my
opinion. ;-)

[Bug 158119] Re: Photo Import from Canon IXUS 30/Powershot SD200 failed

2007-11-10 Thread Yossarian
I had a similar problem with a Canon IXUS 500/Powershot S500, it would
hang on picture import and I could not get capture to work. My solution
was to remove it from the list of cameras that the canon driver would
feel responsible for. The PTP2-driver of libgphoto2 would then take over
and work perfectly.

I'm attaching the patch that worked for me. Maybe an IXUS 30 would only
need a similar patch, removing the lines pertaining to that model.

Step by step:
- install build-essential and libltdl3-dev
- get the source: apt-get source libgphoto2-port0
- patch canon.c
- ./configure --disable-nls; make; make install

I got errors while compiling, "--disable-nls" fixed that. The new library is
installed under /usr/local/lib, I used
  export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:/usr/lib
in order to use it. Good luck.

[Bug 150930] Re: Black screen, and bad usplash.conf

2007-10-19 Thread yossarian
brettalton,

I have done exactly what you wrote above, then set in StartupManager [EMAIL
PROTECTED] and it helped :)
usplash.diff is empty, menu.diff says:

+++ /home/jump/menu.lst 2007-10-19 10:24:00.0 +0200

BTW, on my second HP ze2113us with ATI 200M I have tried another solution which
also works:
1) Install ubuntu
2) Change the resolution in /etc/usplash.conf to 1024x768
3) sudo update-initramfs -u -k `uname -r`

Thank you for help! :-)

2007-10-18 Thread yossarian
HP ze2113us, ATI 200M - same problem as posted by Vadim Peretokin

(Usplash.conf was reporting 1280x1024. I changed it down to 1024x768, but no
deal.
The shutdown splash works. Just not the bootup one)

[Bug 106844] Guarddog's confirmation sound cannot be disabled

2007-04-15 Thread Yossarian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: guarddog

This has been bugging me since Dapper: I routinely disable all system
sounds using the control panel of KDE. All applications follow these
settings, except for Guarddog (an iptables GUI). Every time I press OK
or Apply, an orchestra sound reminds me that I just pressed a button.
Since I have my stereo connected to the computer, this can be incredibly
loud and annoying.

System: Kubuntu Feisty Beta

** Affects: guarddog (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed
