[Bug 1882430] Re: Screensaver locks without overlay after resume from suspend

2022-06-30 Thread abssorb
This bug probably affects multiple people but is under-reported in one
bug because it's hard to identify.

These seem to be the same.

[Bug 1958934] Re: laptop does not respond to keyboard or mouse input

2022-03-06 Thread abssorb
Try typing password into unresponsive screen

I have a similar scenario 21.10, when waking from suspend by opening
laptop lid, the desktop is visible, the cursor displays, but clicks and
typing do nothing.

However if I type my password the system becomes usable. I.e. the lock
is in effect, but the box to type password is invisible.

[Bug 1600622] Re: Screen doesn't lock or go to sleep when certain Chrome tabs are open

2021-03-28 Thread abssorb
Still a problem in 20.04.

The people with the power to change this never experience the pain of
it. Too many Devs don't use power management themselves, they have
desktop machines and leave them running 24/7.

I wish leadership would drive another 100 papercuts project.

Repeatable on LiveUSB.

Maybe there are some dependencies that are not fully removed.

[Bug 1863434] Re: 20.04 grub menu not visible

2020-11-25 Thread abssorb
Repeatable on dual-boot. The expected behaviour for dual-boot is that
the grub menu will show.

Whatever process detects dual-boot during reconfiguration of grub is failing as
of 20.04.1
grub-mkconfig ??

This also occurs when using boot-repair, if boot-repair performs a reinstall of
grub, then the new config follows the single boot convention and
/etc/default/grub option is changed to:
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden

To solve, manually change this addition back to default GRUB2 setting of:
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=
which defaults to show, or set explicitly using
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu

then update-grub

This was mentioned in post #23. Adding this comment to show it's repeatable.
If you re-install grub2, then a dual-boot is not recognised.

@Julian Please re-assess. Your comments match only a single boot
install.

[Bug 1897873] [NEW] nautilus doesn't display thumbnails on NFS network share

2020-09-30 Thread abssorb
Public bug reported:

Nautilus is set to show thumbnails in all locations. When viewing a NAS
share, it will not display thumbnails for a NFS mount. Just generic
image icon is displayed for both jpg and movies.

If I view the same folder in Nautilus via samba, the thumbnails will
generate and display OK.

Thunar will generate and display thumbnails OK on NFS and samba.

Permissions are sound.
Works on 18.04 as expected, and NAS has not changed since 18.04 in use.

2019-01-02 Thread abssorb
XFCE 18.04, nautilus was working fine. Started to see this behaviour
recently. Possibly due to adding nautilus-extension-gnome-terminal.

Commenting out the line:
x-scheme-handler/file=exo-file-manager.desktop

in

/usr/share/xubuntu/applications/defaults.list (provided by Xubuntu)

Worked immediately when nautilus restarted.

[Bug 1643706] Re: snap apps need to be able to browse outside of user $HOME dir. for Desktop installs

2018-11-21 Thread abssorb
Still looks like a bug not a feature. If it were a feature, it would
have the necessary communications with the end user sorted out
completely. I wasn't even aware of this crucifying limitation until I
saw an error on 18.04 via hugo:

client1:/media/web_server/hugo$ hugo new site hugotest
Error: Failed to create dir: mkdir /var/lib/snapd/void/hugotest: permission
denied

If it were a feature, then snap itself would say something about snap
app can't write outside of your home directory.

As far as a feature goes, it precludes any user with a NAS or any kind
of network share. It's too dumbed-down to be of use.

[Bug 1772890] [NEW] Side pane - no logical order of mounted drives

2018-05-23 Thread abssorb
Public bug reported:

My system mounts a load of NFS shares from the server at boot. Nautilus
will list these in alphanumeric order.

However Thunar shows them in the side pane in a completely random order,
which is different on any reboot. I made a forum post to see if there a
way to have Thunar use some sort of sensible order to display these
drives, but no results.

Logging as a bug.

[Bug 1314226] [NEW] ubiquity partition step does not show some hard drives

2014-04-29 Thread abssorb
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 14.04 amd64, I'm experiencing this old bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/459054

during the partition step of the installer, sda is not coming up at all either
in manual partition or automatically partition.
I have three other disks, sdb is data, sdc is windows 7 and sdd is /home
none of the drives are mounted. All are visible in gparted.

Tried disconnecting all other drives. No difference.
Tried swapping SATA cables to drives that were detected (windows). No success.

Searching took me to bug 459054 and the following workaround from
Richard Bailey

On the live cd I uninstalled the dmraid package, restarted the
installer and now sda shows.

The workaround was successful on 14.04.

Apologies that the logs not included - the install is now running and I
didn't have time to repeat.

[Bug 1119388] Re: No install option for paid apps, only a Buy option - Gives a problem when re-installing

2013-11-26 Thread abssorb
Just to re-iterate: Original problem states without having to log in

Reinstall previous purchases… has a pre-requisite of user having Ubuntu One
account.
If there is no account, Previous Purchases is blank.

The workaround is the click the Buy button anyway, but that is clunky.

[Bug 1157643] Re: procps fail to start

I can also confirm Upgrade to Spideroak 5.0.4 (via deb download)
removed the problem.

 procps

Found that procps fails to start, and ran command manually

cat /etc/sysctl.d/*.conf /etc/sysctl.conf | sysctl -e -p -

Gave key permission problems. I eventually found this bug report and
the mentions re spideroak. Updated spideroak and the problem went away.

[Bug 1176106] Re: Nautilus file order problem when copying files to FAT32 USB

2013-05-04 Thread abssorb
The devices in question are car audio players with MP3 playback via USB.
Both OEM (e.g. Volvo, Nissan, Mercedes etc etc) and aftermarket (e.g.
Pioneer, Alpine etc). They are working as designed. The same data
transferred to the same USB from a windows PC behaves as expected.

I can appreciate that this is on the edges of what Nautilus delivers,
though as Nautilus is the place where end users would expect this
behaviour to perform as well is it is handled in Mac or Windows, then
it's a gap in Ubuntu capability.

This is a workaround, and perhaps explains the issue in more detail.

[Bug 1176106] [NEW] Nautilus file order problem when copying files to FAT32 USB

2013-05-03 Thread abssorb
Public bug reported:

When using nautilus to copy files to a FAT32 USB, files are stored using the
original directory order.
When read by a primitive device which does no software sorting, files are
presented in non-alphanumeric order.

E.g. When copying a list of mp3 files to a USB flash drive for playing
in a hardware device, the order looks correct, but the hardware device
plays the mp3 files in directory order (as revealed by ls -f).

Example:
ls -1fi

7771 .
7759 ..
7772 02_Thorny_Thicket__The_Submarines.mp3
7773 10_Brightest_Hour__The_Submarines.mp3

[Bug 734026] Re: Confusing terminology when performing update/upgrade.

2013-03-13 Thread abssorb
This is still present in 12.10 when performing an update that results in
a Not all updates can be installed message.

Not all Updates can be installed
Run a partial upgrade, to install as many updates as possible.

This can be caused by:
* A previous upgrade which didn't complete
* Problems with some of the installed software
* Inofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
* Normal changes of a pre-release version of Ubuntu

Partial Upgrade Close

In this case, when you click the update button, it announces that you
have to run a partial upGRADE, and then there is a confusion of update /
upgrade in the wording.

[Bug 1071209] Re: memtest86+ test #7 false positives (random number sequence error)

2013-03-06 Thread abssorb
Users are still exposed to this bug.

That the bug is fixed in the repo isn't going to help people as
memtest86 is run from a liveCD or Live USB.

The buggy version is still in the download for 12.10, even though it's fixed in
the repo. It's also in the 12.10 secure remix.
Confirmed: I downloaded 12.10 64 bit today. Memtest86+ is v4.20. The Test #7
fails with good memory- false positive.

Recommend the downloads should also contain the fix and perhaps amend
fix status to be more helpful?

People are going to get a fresh download, create a bootable CD or
LiveUSB directly from the download without involving the repo - and get
the false positives.

I have a problem with a machine and I've spent many hours running tests
- I'd read about this bug, saw the the fix released status and
initially eliminated it as a problem in my investigations. I'm sure
others will do this also and assume fix released means it's in the
latest downloads.

Even if you use the principle of RTFM, a false status against a false
positive will be a headache to work around.

My impact is I have a new machine and I made the supplier send me 4x 8Gb
RAM replacements which weren't actually needed, plus 26 hours testing
time wasted. I would spare others that pain if I could.

With my MB / RAM config I'm getting the false positive with every ram
stick in any slot, so if I can help with further testing I'd be happy
to.

[Bug 253167] Re: Rhythmnbox sort by Album Artist for guest/compilations

2010-02-27 Thread abssorb
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 228422 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228422

This is definitely a different requirement to bug #228422.

This is about rhythmbox listing the tracks, not about ripping from CD.
There is basic need lacking in rhythmbox to list by album artist.
Listing by artist shows all the one-hit-wonders from compilation
albums and it is a PITA.

Fix:

As is:
Edit / Preferences / Browser views:
   Artists and albums
   Genres and artists
   Genres, artists and albums

Suggested:
Edit / Preferences / Browser views:
   Artists and albums
   Genres and artists
   Genres, artists and albums
Genres, album artist and albums Need this

Why? I have a collection of about 300 CDs all ripped to my server. So, approx
200 artists that I'm actually interested in. But, trying to find my music,
rhythmbox shows a list of over 1000 artists. 800 of them I would NEVER seek
out to play. It's a real pain!
It gets worse with remixes, where an album artist does remixes, and so it's not
a compilation but their own original work in collaboration. E.g. Paul
Oakenfold A lively mind. The Album artist is Paul Oakenfold, because he did
the mixing and released the album. But, each artist who wrote the original
before it was remixed is listed individually in the artist field. Now this
is NOT a compilation album, but, trying to play the album can only be done by
looking up the album name. So, If I want to play all Paul Oakefold's work
back-to back, the only way is to use album artist. Or, corrupt my ID3 tags as a
workaround. Which I don't want to do because it works perfectly on other
players.
