In System - Sound - Sounds in the login sound enabled? This setting made no change in my case, until I turned splash screen on and it worked. [Bug 124876] Re: Should install nvidia-glx-new instead of nvidia-glx for video cards that can handle -new
I just tried it in Gutsy and even though I have a GeForce 8800GTS, restricted manager installed nvidia-glx instead of nvidia-glx-new which doesn't even support my card. Of course X failed to start upon restart. I don't have an older card though to test if it installs nvidia-glx- legacy if your card only works with the old drivers. -- Should install nvidia-glx-new instead of nvidia-glx for video cards that can handle -new https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/124876 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 98641] Re: [nvidia-glx-new] NVidia driver missing libwfb
I have this problem in Gutsy as well and fixed it by copying over the file from the official nVidia package. This bug is pretty critical, it must be fixed in Feisty and make it for Gutsy. [Bug 132877] Re: Gforce 8 series screen blanks out of sync during usplash boot
I have the same problem. I just got a Geforce 8800GTS and usplash does not appear (my monitor goes to out of sync and sleep mode). Doesn't matter if I use nvidia or nv open source drivers. It happens both in Feisty and Gutsy. It used to work fine with my 6600GT, and it still does. [Bug 137118] Gnome splash screen and sound disabled in Gutsy
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-session The Gnome splash screen was removed by default on Gutsy as apparently it slows down login. I believe this is a poor decision that needs to be changed. 1) The splash screen improves the overall impression a user gets from Ubuntu. Booting from login screen to Gnome desktop can take up to 5 seconds depending on setup (or more in slower setups). Without the splash screen the user gets the impression Ubuntu is stuck at this point. Looking at a brown color background for some seconds isn't good for the much wanted Ubuntu polish. So I think that even if the splash screen is slowing the login (why? how much?) there are some advantages in using it. 2) With the graphical splash, the login sound is gone as well. Why is that? Almost all desktop OS have some kind of welcome sounds. 3) Even when you select Play System Sounds and enable the Login sound in System - Preferences - Sound, nothing happens while the splash is disabled. Thus the user is changing a setting that affects nothing. Bottom line, I think this change needs to be reconsidered. ** Affects: gnome-session (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Gnome splash screen and sound disabled in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/137118 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sounds do not work due to the removal of Gnome splash screen. Enable splash screen (in Configuration Editor, apps - gnome-session - enable show splash screen) and the sounds should work. [Bug 89493] Re: Centrino wireless networking does not connect (herd 5)
Hi, I was the one who originally reported about enabling SSID fixing it, although I don't know if it can be reproduced in every case. I can reproduce this problem with two routers, both a Thomson Speedtouch 585 modem/router and a Netgear WGT624 router. My wireless card is a Netgear WG511T PCMCIA card. (Atheros chip - Mad wifi driver). OS is Feisty with all updates installed. (the problem is happening for more than 20 days I am using Feisty in my laptop now - none of the kernel or nm-applet updates seems to have fixed it) - if I have SSID broadcast off, the network manager applet will not connect. I enter all the info it tries to connect ~30 secs and then gives up. Changing the security from None to WEP and WPA does not work. If I disable network manager and manually configure wpa-suppliant.conf and /etc/network/interfaces I can connect fine. - if I enable SSID broadcast in the settings of my router, nm-applet works just fine just as it was working in Edgy. It asks for a WPA password and connects.
