[Bug 2063869] Re: Missing default cursor

2024-07-08 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Thank you Daniel. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to fix the problem. I
upgraded the packages, and now have:

> e Mutter window manager
> ii mutter-common-bin 46.2-1ubuntu0.24.04.1
> amd64shared programs for
> the Mutter window manager

but there's still no "default" file:

> root@albatross:/usr/share/icons/DMZ-White/cursors# ls -l default
> ls: cannot access 'default': No such file or directory

and if I change the cursor to "Adwaita (default)", and back to "DMZ-
White", I still see the grey square when moving the mouse pointer over
the desktop or top bar.

As a side note, changing the cursor to "Adwaita (default)", and then
switching virtual desktop to my Firefox window seems to crash all my
gnome-terminal windows and gnome-tweaks. Going the other direction
doesn't. Probably a separate problem. I'll report it if it still happens
once we fix this.

[Bug 2061292] Re: Reduce animation setting gets forgotten on every reboot

2024-06-22 Thread Alistair Cunningham
After re-installing my laptop, this problem is back. This time it
happens after every reboot. I now have auto login enabled, and am
booting directly into the default Ubuntu desktop environment every time,
so the problem can't be caused by loading another desktop environment
such as Unity.

Any suggestions on how to debug this?

[Bug 2065739] Re: Unnattended upgrades take a long time due to excessive running of "apt-check"

2024-05-14 Thread Alistair Buxton
The result of this is usually that the user gets frustrated waiting for
updates that never finish installing, so they just turn off the
computer. Then next time there are even more updates, making he problem
worse.

It isn't clear to me why apt-check is so slow, but from systemctl I can
see that it runs lsb-release to get the release name at least 10 to 20
times per invocation.

[Bug 2065739] Re: Unnattended upgrades take a long time due to excessive running of "apt-check"

2024-05-14 Thread Alistair Buxton
For example look at .var.log.apt.history.log.txt

Many packages take less than a second to install. But in between each
one is a 15 to 20 second delay. That delay is the time during which apt-
check is running.

You can watch this happening by running "watch systemctl status apt-
daily-upgrade" and looking at the processes in the cgroup:

```
~$ systemctl status apt-daily-upgrade
● apt-daily-upgrade.service - Daily apt upgrade and clean activities
 CGroup: /system.slice/apt-daily-upgrade.service
Then manually running "time apt-check"
```
~$ time /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check --human-readable

[Bug 2065739] [NEW] Unnattended upgrades take a long time due to excessive running of "apt-check"

2024-05-14 Thread Alistair Buxton
Public bug reported:

The unattended upgrade services runs "apt-check" to update the MOTD
where a summary of available updates is displayed. It does this after
every package that is installed. Unfortunately, apt-check is extremely
expensive - it takes about 15 seconds to run.

If you have a computer that is infrequently used, you may have as many
as 300 available updates. Unattended upgrade will therefore run apt-
check 300 times. This takes 1 hour 15 minutes, during which time no
packages are actually installed.

Suppose you turn on your computer once a week to do something like pay
some bills. It takes 5 minutes. Then you have to wait 2 hours before you
can turn it off. Every time.

[Bug 2063869] [NEW] Missing default cursor

2024-04-26 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 23.10 to 24.04, the DMZ-White mouse pointer
works correctly when the pointer is over a window, but shows a pale grey
square when over the desktop or Ubuntu top bar. This appears to happen
because the /usr/share/icons/DMZ-White/cursors/default file (or symlink)
is missing. Doing the following appears to fix the problem:

1. cd /usr/share/icons/DMZ-White/cursors
2. ln -s left_ptr default
3. In gnome-tweaks change to some other mouse pointer.
4. In gnome-tweaks change back to DMZ-White.

[Bug 2061292] Re: Reduce animation setting gets forgotten on every reboot

2024-04-18 Thread Alistair Cunningham
I think I've figured out why this is happening. If I restart directly
into Ubuntu, then it works correctly and the setting is remembered.
However, if I restart into Unity, then back into Ubuntu, the setting is
forgotten. Perhaps Unity is overwriting the setting?

[Bug 2061298] [NEW] Screen corruption in Firefox and Thunderbird when using Wayland

2024-04-14 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 23.10 to 24.04, Firefox and Thunderbird both
suffer from screen corruption when running with Wayland and virtual
desktops. The main windows are fine, but their tab bars show old data
from other apps in other virtual desktops.

Attached are screenshots of this. The screenshots don't really show the
corruption, but they do show the areas that are corrupted as a grey
"chessboard" pattern.

Apologies if this is filed against the wrong package. If so, please re-
assign it.

[Bug 2061143] [NEW] Unity accepts no user input after upgrade to 24.04

2024-04-12 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Public bug reported:

After upgrading Ubuntu from 23.10 to 24.04, and logging into Unity, the
mouse appears and can be moved as normal, but no menus appear, clicking
the mouse buttons does nothing, and no key presses do anything, not even
ctrl-alt-del. It is impossible to launch any applications, or even log
out cleanly.

The only way to escape is to press and hold the computers power button
for a few seconds to force a hard reboot, and then when the computer
boots again select Ubuntu on wayland rather than Unity.

seen them happen when reinstalling packages, but I rarely reinstall

[Bug 1965468] Re: refresh app awareness: snapd thinks clion is running, but it isn't

2022-03-17 Thread Alistair Buxton
Okay I found the problem - a detached tmux session was still running
inside the container.

The way you actually find this is to run `systemctl-cgls` and then look
for the cgroup belonging to the snap. It will be something like
`snap.clion.clion.e566369e-6a51-4497-84ba-d4f52f65291b.scope` and the
processes running inside it will be listed directly below. Snapd wants
there to be no processes in the cgroup before it will do the refresh.

[Bug 1956835] Re: package linux-firmware 1.187.24 failed to install/upgrade: installed linux-firmware package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2022-01-15 Thread Alistair
I have ZFS (ZSYS) installed and the snapshots on a laptop can fill up the
space. I was able to free up the disk space by loading the zsys config file
(not installed by default) and reduce the number of "keep" snapshots. ZSYS
assumes that it is running on a machine that is up most of the time, but if it
is not, then there can be large changes (kernel updates) within more than
expected snapshots, hence space fills up faster than may have been expected.
The actual space available to /boot is 2G, but when the snapshots don't get
garbage collected, the free space gets too small for updates to run.
zsys assumptions and garbage collection default rules need to be re-considered
based on usage, even if it is just described in the man/info pages, rather than
needing to look them up in didrocks blogs (again).
If the problem was caused by lack of /boot space, close this bug.

After updating the system, rebooted and this error appeared.
Fixed a problem related to /boot/grub/grubenv - "Error in environment" and
grub-common.service
by providing absolute path to grub-editenv. /boot/grub/grubenv was full of
0x0, rather than 0x2323 as it has now.

[Bug 1778087] Re: ELAN1200 touchpad jumps around and disconnects

2021-12-21 Thread Alistair Sutter
@mirh

I just installed 5.14.0-1011-oem from APT and still no dice. Had to
install nvidia-470 to get it to work and broke something with openGL. So
I am now going to revert back to 5.11.

5.15 is slated to release with Ubuntu 22.04 so I have no way to test it
yet since I am still on 20.04.

This bug persists.

[Bug 1947871] Re: package linux-image-5.11.0-38-generic 5.11.0-38.42~20.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: run-parts: /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools exited with return code 1

2021-10-20 Thread Alistair
Identified that the command :

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.11.0-38-generic

required approx 88M of disk space on /boot, but I only had 73M:
df -h /boot
bpool/BOOT/ubuntu_l3g9y7 286M 213M 73M 75% /boot

Problem resolved by manually running zsys garbage collection (laptop, so
scheduled jobs are unable to run when the laptop is off/hybernating.

To demonstrate, use "zsysctl machine show to list the ZFS snapshots that
are part of zsys. Use with wc to show the number of snapshots before
garbage collection and after, hopefully with a reduction:

zsysctl machine show|wc
127 4687959
zsysctl service gc
zsysctl machine show|wc
105 3816350

Free space after this has run:
df -lh /boot
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
bpool/BOOT/ubuntu_l3g9y7 375M 202M 174M 54% /boot

Monitoring the Avail space for boot while re-running apt upgrade :
 df -h /boot
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
bpool/BOOT/ubuntu_l3g9y7 375M 289M 86M 78% /boot
before returning to 174M available.
zfs list -r bpool
NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT
bpool 1.58G 174M 96K /boot
bpool/BOOT1.58G 174M 96K none
bpool/BOOT/ubuntu_l3g9y7 1.58G 174M 201M /boot

The used space in this case is in zfs snapshots, hence zsys garbage
collection resolved this.

Where zfs and zsys are installed, checking free space and "bloat"
required space, with the option/suggestion to run "zsysctl service gc".

[Bug 1945742] [NEW] Attach dialog badly formats long image filenames

2021-10-01 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Public bug reported:

The dialog to attach a file to an email is badly formatted when an image
file with a long filename is selected. The image preview takes up almost
all the dialog width, leaving very little space for the list of files.
This is particularly a problem when the first file in a directory
happens to be an image with a long filename.

[Bug 1945741] [NEW] Can't view attachment after attaching

2021-10-01 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Public bug reported:

In Thunderbird 78, you could double click on an attachment you've just
attached when composing an email. This was very useful, so that you
could double check that you attached the correct file. In Thunderbird
91, this doesn't seem to work. When you double click on the attachment,
nothing happens.

[Bug 1945592] [NEW] Viewing PDF doesn't use full screen width

2021-09-30 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Public bug reported:

In Thunderbird 91, clicking on a .pdf attachment to an email loads the
PDF file in a new tab, which is good. However, the view of the PDF file
only uses about 2/3rds of the screen width, and leaves a large empty
grey area on the right hand side of the screen. Zooming in on the
document only zooms within the existing area, and does not expand to the
grey area.

[Bug 1945591] [NEW] No event menus when editing events in tab

2021-09-30 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Public bug reported:

If you enable the "Edit events and tasks in a tab instead of in a dialog
window" setting in the preferences, then there doesn't seem to be any
way of accessing the event menus. This means that there's no way of
setting the time zone of an event.

[Bug 1945587] [NEW] Double click on calendar item views rather than edits

2021-09-30 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Public bug reported:

Not sure if this is a bug, or new intended behaviour. In Thunderbird 78,
double clicking on a calendar item showed its edit dialog. In
Thunderbird 91, double clicking on a calendar item shows a summary
dialog, and you then have to click on the edit button to edit it. Since
you almost always want to edit rather than view, this is less
convenient. If this is an intended behaviour, it would be good to have a
configuration setting to disable it, and go directly to the edit dialog.

[Bug 1945368] [NEW] Thunderbird 91 forgets default calendar

Thank you Olivier. Once my mirror has Thunderbird 91, I'll give it a
try.

[Bug 1945200] [NEW] Updates to Google Calender succeed but produce MODIFICATION_FAILED error

2021-09-27 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu 21.10 and Thunderbird
1:78.13.0+build1-0ubuntu2, creating, updating, or deleting events in
Google Calendar often produces a MODIFICATION_FAILED error, but succeeds
anyway. The events are shown in the Google Calendar web interface, and
exiting and restarting Thunderbird shows them locally.

This problem seems to only happen if Thunderbird has been running for a
while (overnight, for example). It never seems to happen immediately
after restarting Thunderbird. Perhaps Thunderbird's connection to Google
is getting stuck after a while? I am using hotel internet access, which
is not always the most reliable or consistent, and I have noticed this
problem on two different hotel networks in the last few days.

This problem did not happen on Ubuntu 21.04 and whatever version of
Thunderbird it uses.

[Bug 1924663] Re: Bluetooth incorrectly enabled after suspend

2021-09-25 Thread Alistair Cunningham
I've just realised that I've filed this bug against blueman, but I no
longer have the blueman package installed, so it can't be the cause. The
bluetooth related packages I have installed are:

# dpkg -l | grep blue
rc blueman 2.1.4-1
amd64Graphical bluetooth manager
ii bluetooth5.60-0ubuntu2
all Bluetooth support (metapackage)
ii bluez5.60-0ubuntu2
amd64Bluetooth tools and daemons
ii bluez-cups 5.60-0ubuntu2
amd64Bluetooth printer driver for CUPS
ii bluez-obexd 5.60-0ubuntu2
amd64bluez obex daemon
ii gir1.2-gnomebluetooth-1.0:amd64 3.34.5-3
amd64Introspection data for GnomeBluetooth
ii gnome-bluetooth 3.34.5-3
amd64GNOME Bluetooth tools
ii indicator-bluetooth
0.0.6+17.10.20170605-0ubuntu3 amd64System bluetooth
indicator.
ii libbluetooth3:amd64 5.60-0ubuntu2
amd64Library to use the BlueZ Linux Bluetooth stack
ii libgnome-bluetooth13:amd64 3.34.5-3
amd64GNOME Bluetooth tools - support library
ii pulseaudio-module-bluetooth 1:15.0+dfsg1-1ubuntu2
amd64Bluetooth module for PulseAudio sound server

Does anyone know which package is likely to be the cause of this
problem?

[Bug 1916586] [NEW] Adding word to dictionary doesn't update subject

2021-02-23 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Public bug reported:

When composing a new email, if you type a word that's not in the

[Bug 1912354] [NEW] Option to show remote images gone

2021-01-19 Thread Alistair Cunningham

[Bug 1905458] Re: [snap] Chromium USB enumeration fails when usbmon module is loaded

2021-01-18 Thread Alistair Buxton
This problem has got somewhat worse: now all webcam raw-usb udev nodes
are owned by root. That means chromium raw-usb won't work if you have a
webcam.

I think this is really a bug in chromium tbh.

looks to me like a missing dependency in the "meld" package.

[Bug 1905458] [NEW] [snap] Chromium USB enumeration fails with usbmon module is loaded

2020-11-24 Thread Alistair Buxton
Public bug reported:

Version:

chromium 87.0.4280.66 1411

Steps to reproduce:

1. Have Chromium snap, with raw-usb plug connected.
2. sudo modprobe usbmon.
3. Open Chromium and try to use a webpage that has webusb.

Result:

Chromium cannot see any USB devices on the system, regardless of whether
it has raw-usb or not.

The following errors are printed on dmesg:

```
pid=3120526 comm="ThreadPoolForeg" requested_mask="r" denied_mask="r"
```

Chromium will then print this on stderr:

```
[3121487:3121626:1123/032552.888385:ERROR:udev_watcher.cc(97)] Failed to begin
udev enumeration.
```

Why this happens:

Chromium enumerates USB devices by querying udev. Specifically by using
udev_enumerate_scan_devices. When usbmon module is loaded, some new
device nodes are created for the monitor endpoints. They are only
readable by root. When Chromium scans for normal USB devices, it finds
the monitors and tries to probe them. Apparmor blocks it, which causes
udev_enumerate_scan_devices to fail.

Impact:

There is no way for the user to know this error has occurred unless they
happen to be watching dmesg or the stderr of Chromium (which requires
they ran it from a terminal). Unless they check both of these places and
realize that the error messages are connected, Chromium will just appear
to behave as if there are no USB devices connected to the system at all.
If the user does realize that usbmon is causing a problem, they must
restart Chromium after unloading it, because it will not retry if
enumeration ever fails.

[Bug 1905457] [NEW] [snap] Chromium can enumerate USB devices without the raw-usb plug

2020-11-24 Thread Alistair Buxton
Public bug reported:

Version:

chromium 87.0.4280.66 1411

Steps to reproduce:

1. Have Chromium snap, with raw-usb plug disconnected.
2. Open Chromium and try to use a webpage that has webusb.

Result:

USB.getDevices() and USB.requestDevice() will succeed but
USBDevice.open() will fail, emitting "DOMException: Permission Denied"
on the browser console. Or, put another way, you can select a USB device
that you want the webpage to use, but it is impossible for the webpage
to actually use it.

Why this happens:

Chromium enumerates USB devices by querying udev. It does not require
elevated permissions beyond the snap defaults in order to do this. So it
can retrieve a list of USB devices even without raw-usb.

Impact:

It is impossible to access the USB devices until the raw-usb plug is
connected. However, to a normal user, it appears that Chromium already
has USB permissions because it can enumerate devices. The webusb API is
in a confusing, partially-working state, and there is nothing to
indicate that Chromium needs additional permissions in order for it to
fully work.

4) The GUI gets stuck in a loop, flickering between two states. I have
made a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6H4nZlwTTAw

While it's flickering, it spews many copies of a warning to the console:

Olivier, where specifically is that setting? I don't see any menu called

[Bug 1901829] Re: thunderbird fails to open, xml parse error

2020-10-29 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Olivier, since I wrote comment #26, I actually got it working and since
then it seems to be reliable. What I did was:

1. Stopped Thunderbird, which had been running in safe mode.
2. sudo apt remove thunderbird-locale*
3. sudo apt install thunderbird-locale-en-gb
4. Start Thunderbird normally.

I've since stopped and started it about 5 times normally, and all seems
to work correctly.

[Bug 1901829] Re: thunderbird fails to open, xml parse error

2020-10-29 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Unfortunately running "find ~/.thunderbird -name
langpack*@thunderbird.mozilla.org.xpi -exec rm {} \;" didn't fix it for
me. From before running that command, I had just the en-GB language
pack:

~$ find ~/.thunderbird -name langpack*@thunderbird.mozilla.org.xpi
/home/alistair/.thunderbird/gh0m9rq4.default/extensions/langpack-en...@thunderbird.mozilla.org.xpi

and had the following thunderbird packages installed:

# dpkg -l | grep thunderbird
ii thunderbird1:78.3.2+build1-0ubuntu1
amd64Email, RSS and newsgroup client with integrated spam
filter
ii thunderbird-gnome-support 1:78.3.2+build1-0ubuntu1
amd64Email, RSS and newsgroup client - GNOME support
ii thunderbird-locale-en 1:78.3.2+build1-0ubuntu1
  amd64English language pack for Thunderbird
ii thunderbird-locale-en-gb 1:78.3.2+build1-0ubuntu1
all Transitional English language pack for Thunderbird
ii thunderbird-locale-en-us 1:78.3.2+build1-0ubuntu1
all Transitional English language pack for Thunderbird

As with others, running thunderbird in safe mode works for me.
