[Bug 52786] openafs-modules-source builts when kernel API++

Public bug reported:

Would be nice to include openafs-modules source into
the procedure that rebuild when - of
the kernel changes.

As it is once has to use module-assistant with each
kernel ABI change.

[Bug 52787] openafs-modules-sources should also create a second openafs-module-2.6- pkg

2006-07-12 Thread allee
Public bug reported:

Hi,
After version and api of the kernel one has to rebuild
openafs-module- (see wish #52786).  Even
storing it in a private repository does not update the
hosts where the new kernel was installed because it's
a new pkgs.

Would be handy if openafs-modules-source would
also create a openafs-module-2.6- pkg depending on
the built openafs-module-2.6.- pkg (same
type as linux-headers-2.6-).

So once openafs-module-2.6- in installed, and
updated openafs-module-2.6- pulls in automaticly
the new pkg openafs-module-2.6.-.

[Bug 52792] module list not updated when openafs-module-- is installed

2006-07-12 Thread allee
Public bug reported:

Installation of AFS client in dapper, makes the client fails when done
like:

  aptitude install openafs-module-- openafs-client

while this works fine:

  aptitude install openafs-module--
  depmod -
  aptitude install openafs-client

Postrm script has a

# Automatically added by dh_installmodules
if [ "$1" = "configure" ] && [ -x "`which update-modules 2>/dev/null`" ]; then
update-modules >/dev/null || [ "$?" = 3 ]
fi

but there is no - info. So something
is wrong.

I assume everyone (like me) tries to install updated
openafs-modules--abi together with an updated
kernel, so after a reboot everything works again as before.

openafs-client init.d script does also strange things. First it
goes to great detail to figure out the full path for the right kernel-module,
then it simple uses

  modprobe openafs${MP}

which fails due to missing/failed depmod run. While
  insmod
would work (hack hack ;)

[Bug 23211] Re: (breezy) Cups cannot print to browsed printer

2006-07-13 Thread allee
Hi  Martin,

AFAICS your suggestion in dapper

sudo /usr/share/cups/enable_sharing 1

is NOT the solution. This only changes listen in ports.conf
and 'sharing' is confusing here. 'sharing' is for
most users c) descripted below

We have three major use cases:

a) local-printer-user, aka I use my local printer and don't care about
other computers -- this is dappers default setup

b) cups-printer-client, aka I want to use automaticly see and use
printer (served by cups) on the lan -- this needs:

   browse.conf Browsing off -> on
   cupsd.conf:   BrowseAddress  @LOCAL <- comment it out!!

2nd step is necessary, otherwise you announce locally installed printers on
LANs (sec bug: information leaking),
get hopelessly bombed with request of other cups installations in TCP 631. that
can never work because of
Listen 631

c) cups printer server, aka you want to make you local printers
available to all computers of type b).

   browse.conf  Browing off -> on
   ports.conf   Listen localhost 631 -> Port 631
in case information leak bug in b) is fixed, also
   cupsd.conf BrowseAddress @LOCAL <-- comment out only for print server ;)

So a simple command that manipulates ports.conf or
browse.conf is not (IMHO) a solution. This has to be
changed to support a) b) and c) to be user-friendly.
Aunt Mary has no glue how UDP and TCP play together
to get want she wants ;)

So this, I can see the printer(s) but can't print to is/will be in
almost all dapper cases 'Browsing on' and by default
BrowseAddress  @LOCAL enable.

Achim -- just run into the b) bug filling syslog with firewall drop msg
-- still searching the most appropriate bug report to report bug in b)

[Bug 57696] Ditto on dapper + 3.5.4, kwallet doesn't show up in the systray

2006-08-25 Thread allee
I can confirm on dapper + KDE 3.5.4.

Addition: kwallet service is running and working
only systray icon is not visible.

I've now found a hack to get systray icon back: after konqueror ask for
an password from the wallet, konqueror displays
an wallet icon in the lower right corner. clicking
on it opens an empty wallet window. click once more
wallet window opens now with the wallet(s) listed. After
closing the wallet icon is in systray again.

I've verified this with my account and a new one.

Ah, one more strangeness. After very first login running

   kwalletmanager

open systray icon. Later after the wallet was created
this did not work anymore (also with --show option)

[Bug 47623] Re: vmware-player doesn't install with FAI

2006-08-29 Thread allee
The problem ocoured with pkg

vmware-player-kernel-modules-2.6.15-23-686

and this pkg is built to work with 2.6.15-23-686
kernel, not 2.6.15.7-ubuntu1-fai-kernels.

So it's IMHO definitely ;) not a bug in fai.

vmware-player-kernel-modules-2.6.15-26 in dapper
has in postinst:

...
case "$1" in
configure)
   depmod -a
;;
...

but it should use 'depmod 2.6.15-26' instead.

[Bug 50450] Re: kdmrc lists /usr/bin twice in path examples

2006-09-15 Thread allee
in kde 3.5.4 for dapper from kubuntu.org:

# The PATH for the Session program.
# Default is "/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games"
#UserPath=
# The PATH for Setup, Startup and Reset, etc.
# Default is
"/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11"
#SystemPath=

So /usr/bin/ is listed only once.

On the other hand /usr/bin/X11 is added, and at least
on my dapper system this is a link to /usr/bin ;)

Debian maintainer added in changelog:

  * Manually add /usr/bin/X11 to the KDM's default session path, as otherwise
systems still running X11R6.9 won't be able to find X binaries, which can
cause the login process to fail under certain circumstances. This bit of
cruft (for X11R7 users) should be harmless, and can be removed post-Etch.
(Closes: #367072)

So I assume in Edgy there's no need for /usr/bin/X11
but I doubt it's worth the future merges.

[Bug 52424] Re: flickr export plugin requires konqueror

2006-10-12 Thread allee
Hi,
most of the kipi-plugins work without pkg konqueror
installed.Most of the kipi-plugins work when one of
the pkgs in Recommends is not installed. That's the
reason why they are recommend and not a depend.
aptitude will install them automaticly by default.

Currently:

Recommends: k3b, imagemagick (>=5.4.8), dcraw (>= 5.88), kmail,
kdeprint, sane-utils, kooka, konqueror

Changing recommends to depends will not change much
for KDE desktop installation, but not non-KDE-Desktop
users (we received complains about them long time ago).

[Bug 80940] ati radeon driver does not autodetect displaysize on Latitude D600, therefore uses wrong resolution

2007-01-22 Thread allee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-ati

Since Hoary up to Feisty Herd2, the xorg ati/radeon driver never detected the
right physical
dimension of the display. So dpi is set to 75 instead of 125. This results
in fonts that almost half as wide and height as it should be.

Using DisplaySize in Monitor section of xorg.conf fixes it, but that's not
autodetection
(as works perfect with i810 on other laptops)

$ grep DisplaySize /etc/X11/xorg.conf
DisplaySize 286 214

[Bug 80999] dapper: apt-get tries to use the repository apache server as a proxy with Acquire::http::Proxy "false"

2007-01-22 Thread allee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

Lot of dapper users contacted me that they fail to download Packages.gz from my
repo
that worked perferctly before without any trouble.

  deb-src http://www.mpe.mpg.de/~ach/kubuntu/dapper ./

They got the err msg:

Failed attempt were logged by apache2 as:

  ... "GET http://www.mpe.mpg.de/~ach/kubuntu/dapper/./Release HTTP/1.1"
403 1096 "-" "Debian APT-HTTP/1.3"

wget downloaded the Packages.gz without problem, even for installation were
apt-get failed.
>From apache log I saw others (including my dapper installations) sucessfully
>downloading
the pkgs list.

It turned out that the system that were not able to use the dapper repo had:

  Acquire::http::Proxy "false";

in /etc/apt/apt.conf.Removing or commenting out. Makes the problem
disappear.
Affected user did not themself add the Acquire::http::Proxy setting as they
told me.
I assume some debconf or whatever config added it.

Looks like apt-get is trying to use proxy feature even when it is set
to false.

[Bug 72778] Re: Not forced to install vpnc upon installing kvpnc

2006-11-23 Thread allee
the reason why vpn is only recommended is in the
description:

...
 It supports :
   * Cisco-compatible VPN client (vpnc)
   * IPSec (freeswan, openswan, racoon)
   * Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) client (pptp-linux)
   * Virtual Private Network daemon (openvpn)
...

others complained they don't need vpnc.
Formally depends is wrong, and recommends is right.

Maybe

Depends vpnc | openvpn | ...

or kvpnc-cisco pkg?

is a better compromise? bugs.debian.org contains surely
also some reports about depends/recommends ;)

I had a quick, unsucessful try to rebuild 2.0.6 and 2.07.
interdiff appended.   Both FTFBS:

/home/ach/tmp/kdar/kdar-2.0.7/./src/createArchiveThread.cpp: In member function
‘virtual void createArchiveThread::run()’:
/home/ach/tmp/kdar/kdar-2.0.7/./src/createArchiveThread.cpp:81: error: cannot
declare variable ‘userInteractionDialog’ to be of abstract type
‘KDarInteraction’
...

I've to add --enable-mode=64 to make it find the libdar64
and enable-largefile as suggested in dar's INSTALL. I've
no idea if with this change kdar can read old dapper kdar archives (I've never
used kdar).

[Bug 77644] Re: Display Adjustment shows empty window

2007-01-16 Thread allee
Out of curiousity: Did you just stumble of this bug or are you
used to use this menu item? (I'm pondering about simply removing this item ;)

Quick and dirty fix would be to edit

 /usr/share/applications/kde/display.desktop

and to replace

NoDisplay=true

with

  #NoDisplay=true

(dirty because it will get overriden in case the kcontrol module
is updated).

AFAIK the config module display is replaced by displayconfig
so one fix would be to let digikam start kcmshell displayconfig
instead of kcmshell display.

I'll talk with the other kubuntu devels what solution they prefer.
Maybe digikam should try first of displayconfig, display and kgamma.

[Bug 75435] Re: digikam expects trash to be in ~/Desktop/Trash - causes error in Ubuntu

2007-01-16 Thread allee
That's strange. With kubuntu edgy my trash is in

 ~/.local/share/Trash/

when I move this directory away and move a picture in digikam
to Trash it gets recreated.

Can you check that you 'trashed' images from digikam really end up in
~/.Trash and not below ~/.local/share/Trash/* ?

When you start digikam from the command line
is there anything suspect written to the termial
when you delete an image in digikam?

What method are you using to delete picture?
   o RMB over a thumbnail and 'Move to Trash'
   o drag and drop to gnome trash icon
   o or ...

What's the output of 'digikam --version'?

[Bug 75435] Re: digikam expects trash to be in ~/Desktop/Trash - causes error in Ubuntu

2007-01-17 Thread allee
Hi Menachem,

digikam 0.9 or 0.8.2 does not matter because they use the
trash support from kdebase.

 I've create a fresh default ubuntu edgy
installation, and aptitude install'ed digikam, and Pictures I deleted
in digikam ended up in ~/.local/share/Trash (that did not
exists before I started digikam.

Maybe the protection of ~/.local is wrong so kio_trash
can't create it?

Nevertheless  creating a soft link

ln -s  ~/.Trash ~/.local/share/Trash

should fix your problem (tested here works fine.
Gnome trash gets the counting wrong from because it
does not understand the XDG draft but that's cosmetic.)

Anyway. The hole stuff is not a bug in digikam. digikam
uses trash kio slave (as all conformant KDE apps should to).
So running GNOME apps in KDE desktop or vice versa
would have the problem

The kio_trash implements the XDG trash standard currently at
http://www.ramendik.ru/docs/trashspec.html.  This draft is
referenced at http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Standards.

  For every user2 a “home trash” directory MUST be available3. Its name and
location are $XDG_DATA_HOME/Trash ; $XDG_DATA_HOME is the base directory for
user-specific data, as defined in the Desktop Base Directory Specification .

I'll ping the kubuntu/ubuntu core devs what they think,
as a real fix has impact on the hole Desktop environment.

Protection is okay. Same here. Only important thing is that
processes owned by you can create the directories, as
it's the case for you.

Unfortunately not.

Wild guessing, would be easier if I could reproduce it here
but works fine in my fresh ubuntu gnome installation :(

What does
   echo $XDG_DATA_HOME
   kde-config --path xdgdata-dirs
   kde-config --path xdgdata-apps
return? Does the start with ~/.local/share/...

Do you have a Desktop/trash.desktop file?

Mine looks like:

$ cat ~/Desktop/trash.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Comment=Contains removed files
EmptyIcon=trashcan_empty
Encoding=UTF-8
Icon=trashcan_full
Name=Trash
NoDisplay=true
OnlyShowIn=KDE

URL=trash:/

$ ls -l ~/Desktop/trash.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 ach ach 169 2006-11-16 21:49 /home/ach/Desktop/trash.desktop

This file is created vi kdesktop (that might never run in a

[Bug 128952] Re: Kubuntu is not localized according to system settings

2007-07-29 Thread allee
Technically the bug is invalid because ,as ZhengPeng explained, kubuntu-desktop
is the englisch desktop.

On the other hand as a wish to implement simpler default language handling it's
IMHO valid.The default language during installation can be found with:

 debconf-get-selections --installer | grep debian-installer/language

AFAIU installing other pkgs from a postinst will not work (due to locking) so
implementing a 'autoinstall-default-language-pkgs' it not easy.

Nevertheless worth some more thoughts?

[Bug 86480] Re: UVF exception : dcraw 8.39 -> 8.61

2007-08-27 Thread allee
Hi Till,
AFAIU the restricted part is _NOT_ the problem, 'cause: this part in the
license has _NOT_
changed. Problem is, AFAIU, GPL was replace by "No license is required to
download and .."

See also my comment from 26-Feb: Dave does not understand _WHY_ Debian/Kubuntu
has a problem with the license at all. I've asked for clarification but
neither Tollef nor
James answered :(

IMHO: As we provide the code in the source pkg, I (whatever that's worth) and
obviously Dave,
as it looks to me from Dave answer to Gilles question, see no problem
distributing dcraw.
If in doubt, append the source code (it's one C file) in the debian/copyright
file.

As is, we are stuck. :( Nobody, that has a problem with the license explicitly
states/explains
what the problem with the license is. This blocks completetly the support of
all new
RAW cameras. As a consequence all linux apps that support raw cameras will need
backporting as dcraw interface changed as usual and every app will need to be
backported to the older dcraw.

Sad but true :(

[Bug 131133] Re: [gutsy] no sound on Dell Latitude D830

2007-08-28 Thread allee
Ditto: no sound on D830 with Kubuntu Gutsy Tribe 5 i386.

There was one little change over this week end: Before I saw a PCM slider in
kmixer.
Now after dist-upgrading the pkgs updated between Thursday and Monday night,
kmix shows a 'device not found'. icon (after reboot).

[Bug 135557] Screen dimensions of external monitor not correct on X server startup (intel driver)

2007-08-29 Thread allee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

On the external monitor (24'', 1900x1200), connected via DVI to a DellLatitude
D830
(15.4'', 1680 x 1050):

Bugs:
  0) after booting I see a KDM login greeter with fonts and icons way to
big.
   (Monitor does autoscaling).   See 0th.Xorg.0.log
   I assume that the intel driver uses settings of laptop display instead
the external
   monitor settings.
   1) then after login I can set with krandrtray to 1920x1200, but fonts are
still too big.
   While pixel number is corrrect now , the screen dimension (in mm) used
is still of
   the laptop display and from the external monitor. See 1st.Xorg.0.log,
1st.xrandr.log,
   and 1st.xdpyinfo.log

When I then login the KDM login greeter looks perfect (# of pixels and size)
and after
login again and using krandrtray to switch to 1920 everything looks fine:

2007-08-29 Thread allee
xrandr output after logout/in is identical to first login.

Killing xserver show again the same bugs as after a reboot.
I have to login/out and login again to get the correct setting
for the external TFT display.

[Bug 129817] install fails: busybox (initramfs): can't access tty: (/dev/sda trouble?)

2007-08-01 Thread allee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

booting lifeCD install kubuntu on a Dell Latitude D830 a failed using following
CDs:
 * Kubuntu Gutsy Tribe3 i386
 * Kubuntu Gutsy 1-Aug-2007 i386
 * Kubuntu Feisty i386
 * Kubuntu Feisty amd64

Everytime I ended up in the busybox:

   /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off.

Same CDs booted fine on a Dell D600.

Removing with F6: quiet and splash from kernel boot args
showed: 'sda: access beyond 'end of disk?'. Because I don't care
about preinstalled Windows Vista, I've copied /dev/null to /dev/sda
and rebooted.

Now I end up in busybox with the same error. can't access tty, but
the msgs are different: sda is found, the nothing happens for ~ 10 - 15 sec
and then I fall back into busybox. (I'll append a photo of the last screen)

[Bug 129817] Re: install fails: busybox (initramfs): can't access tty: (/dev/sda trouble?)

2007-08-01 Thread allee
Gr! Three times the kernel fall back to busybox after a longer
'do-nothing' phase and the last console output was:

  sd 0:0:0:0 Attached scisi generic sg0 type 0

Now when I tried the 4th time for the photo, the last output was
about USB (see attached photo).
