[Bug 1274320] Re: Error: diskfilter writes are not supported

2022-05-17 Thread Amedee Van Gasse
Confirmed on Ubuntu Jammy Jellyfish (Ubuntu 22.04 LTS) installed on LVM
disk, with GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true.

This bug triggers whenever a boot option other than the first is being
selected in the grub menu. Grub won't be able to save that selection.

2022-03-23 Thread Amedee Van Gasse
Well, yes, the message you linked does not contain any new information;
the two commits there (the one that introduced the bug and the one that
fixes it) are already mentioned here in the first message.

The intent of this bug report is to pull in the fixing bugfix from
upstream.

I have expected this to happen not just for USB input devices but for
all USB devices, like your external drives. I just don't have any other
devices at hand to verify.

[Bug 1963555] [NEW] xhci: Fix command ring abort, write all 64 bits to CRCR register.

2022-03-03 Thread Amedee Van Gasse
Public bug reported:

Upstream mainline kernel includes patch v5.15-rc5-4-gff0e50d3564f.
This patch was included in the Ubuntu kernel as
Ubuntu-5.13.0-22.22-387-g0fc979747dec, available in Ubuntu kernels 5.13.0-23
and up.

The patch is incomplete, which causes an issue with some xHC controllers.
An additional patch was made to the upstream mainline kernel, which fixes the
issue that was introduced: v5.16-rc3-1-g09f736aa9547. This patch does not yet
have a corresponding commit in the Ubuntu kernel repository for Ubuntu 21.10;
and Ubuntu 22.04 will use the 5.15 kernel, which does also not include the
second patch.

Discussion of the first patch (already in Ubuntu kernel) can be found on
the kernel.org mailing list:
https://lore.kernel.org/r/20211008092547.3996295-5-mathias.ny...@linux.intel.com

Discussion of the second patch (not yet in Ubuntu kernel):
https://lore.kernel.org/all/20211126122340.1193239-2-mathias.ny...@linux.intel.com/

Request to include upstream patch v5.16-rc3-1-g09f736aa9547 into the
kernels for Ubuntu 21.10 (5.13 kernels) and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (5.15
kernels).

With qgit you will be able to browse revision tree, view patch content
and changed files, graphically following different development branches.
 Main features:
  - View revisions, diffs, files history, files annotation, archive tree.
  - Commit changes visually cherry picking modified files.
  - Apply or format patch series from selected commits, drag and
drop commits between two instances of qgit.
  - qgit implements a GUI for the most common StGIT commands like push/pop
and apply/format patches. You can also create new patches or refresh
current top one using the same semantics of git commit, i.e.
cherry picking single modified files.

[Bug 1403767] [NEW] Use of uninitialized value $u in substitution (s///) at /usr/share/perl5/Git/SVN.pm line 106.

2014-12-18 Thread Amedee Van Gasse
Public bug reported:

I am running git-svn to convert a large repository on Sourceforge. I
often get this error:

Use of uninitialized value $u in substitution (s///) at
/usr/share/perl5/Git/SVN.pm line 106.
Use of uninitialized value $u in concatenation (.) or string at
/usr/share/perl5/Git/SVN.pm line 106.

Workaround is editing .git/config and deleting all lines with branches
and tags in the [svn-remote] section, but I have to do this very often.

The error occurs while using the svn2git wrapper
(https://github.com/nirvdrum/svn2git) and also while using git svn
directly. The error is reported more than once on the svn2git issue
tracker on github, on different lines, but I did not find any reference
of anyone reporting this upstream to get it fixed, so that is why I am
filing this bug.

[Bug 802021] Re: itext-rups.jar not working

2014-07-01 Thread Amedee Van Gasse
Hi! I started working at iText as QA Engineer 2 months ago, and I'm an
Ubuntu user since... well, take a look at my profile. :)

Is this still an issue?
The original report mentions com.lowagie.* class hierarchy, which is the old
2.x version. I'm not going to invest any time in that, but if anything can be
done for the current 5.x version (with com.itextpdf.* class hierarchy): just
ask.

[Bug 934203] [NEW] --verify fails on renamed backups

2012-02-17 Thread Amedee Van Gasse
Public bug reported:

--verify succeeds only on the most recent version of the full backup.
The md5sum check fails because the filenames in the older .check files
are not updated properly when the full backup versions are renamed.

--verify also fails when older full backups are purged and all
subsequent backups are renamed. The associated .check files also don't
updated accordingly.

For example:
This is a check file when I had 8 full backups and purged full backup
1-7, which renamed full backup 8 to 1:

8f1cd08f7474507751b24d78368f9b32 ./all.801.skipped.gz
5a9c87c7ebba4801c0252b2634d1b33a ./all.801.obsolete.gz
209847ac7775ed5ee54ae714954f2729 ./all.801.list.gz
b1403dd30da8afb4871690aca2c7327e ./all.801.tar.lz
37c91e1872728d15d774fe5778f252a2 ./all.801.new.gz
4b4870721fb61a51a22708520f9a72ba ./all.801.error.gz
88a854a773fe98088ac20fc46058df0d all.1.list.gz

As you can see, 801 did not get renamed to 101.

According to an open bug report upstream, there is a workaround:

The filenames in the .check file are prepended by ./ while the sed
command in backup2l looks for a leading space. Changed the sed command
in backup2l to 'sed s/ \.\/$VOLNAME.$SRC/ \.\/$VOLNAME.$DST/' to fix
the problem.

https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detailatid=424167aid=2508322group_id=39012

However this workaround is not easy to apply because it isn't in a
traditional patch form. There is no indication of a line number of where
this change should be applied.

[Bug 32415] Re: Apple Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard pairing broken in Dapper/Edgy/Feisty

I disagree, the bug isn't fixed. Not even in 11.10.
A workaround is not a fix. A fix is something that makes it work out of the box

Subscribing.

I agree with the suggestion that Robbie made:
1. Set a default signature string
2. Do not enable signatures by default

That way, when a user wants to set a signature, he doesn't get an empty
text box. It's still up to the individual choice user to use the default
sig, or a personalized sig.

LABEL=backup/media/backup   xfs noatime 0   0

/media/vm and /media/backup give a short error at boot (but continues), but
when the OS is completely loaded, I can do ls /media/vm and see what's in
there, so the filesystems are mounted.
Could it be that mountall is running twice during the boot process, and that it
doesn't pick up xfs (or jfs, or any other filesystem that is not in kernel but
in a module) the first time, but it does the second time?

It's just my pet theory, I don't know.
The only (minor) nuisance is that the error message prevents usplash from
displaying properly.

The problem still exists with Karmic Alpha 4, but is gone as soon as
blueman is installed and keyboard+mouse are coupled. After the initial
coupling, the keyboard+mouse remain coupled even after reboot, and all
other bluetooth devices like smartphone also work. Tested with Nokia 6680:
I am able to browse it.

My conclusion is that blueman gives proper hci functionality as expected.
A good thing is that blueman is now included in the Ubuntu universe
repositories, it's no longer needed to add a launchpad repository.

[Bug 318465] Re: Logitech MX5000 doesn't connect via bluetooth under ubuntu

2009-04-07 Thread amedee
I have rebooted a couple of times.
My experiences:

* GRUB: keyboard becomes available after about 5 seconds. If you need
your keyboard in GRUB, set the timeout higher, like 10 seconds. I assume
that this is the normal time for the RF to make connection.

* GDM login: not tested, I use autologin

* Ubuntu desktop: mouse becomes responsive 2 seconds after the desktop
is fully loaded. 50% of the time the keyboard becomes responsive in 5
seconds. If it doesn't, I doubleclick the Blueman icon, click on the
keyboard, Install services, input service. Sometimes I have to give a
pin code, sometimes not.

* Other bluetooth devices: Nokia 6680 is detected, file transfer worked
(updown), internet over GPRS worked.

@Martin: I did a bit more research on your workaround. It puts (or rather
leaves) the keyboard in HID mode, also called legacy USB mode or BIOS mode.
It effectively _breaks_ all other bluetooth functionality. If you have more
than one bluetooth device, you *must* use HCI mode.

My suggestion to the developers: put Blueman in Ubuntu, because it is my
impression that this works better than the default BT software.
To other people with BT issues: please test and confirm if Blueman works better.

[Bug 318465] Re: Logitech MX5000 doesn't connect via bluetooth under ubuntu

2009-04-04 Thread amedee
I found a procedure that works for me. I don't consider it a fix but a
workaround, so please do NOT consider the bug fixed.
It should still be fixed to work out of the box.
I have not yet rebooted!!!

Prerequisites:
* uninstall all bluez-related packages
* install bluez-compat
* install blueman from the ppa (instructions are found elsewhere)
* attach a spare keyboard (an perhaps mouse) with a wire (usb or ps2). All
typing and mousing has to be done with the spare keyboard until the procedure
is complete.

Working:
* keyboard
* multimedia keys (volume control, play/stop/prev/next, media library, email,
others not tested/configured)
* mouse + all mouse buttons
* other bluetooth devices (paired with Nokia 6680)

The problem was usually that you had either keyb+mouse OR other
bluetooth devices, not both. With this fix, both work.

Based on http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6284259postcount=37

To enable bluetooth mode of your keyboard and mouse, you have to press the red
button on the usbstick and plug it in while the red button is pressed. You'll
notice that bluetooth icon apears in on the top right panel. Then run Terminal
hcitool dev:
which gives:
Devices:hci0 00:07:55:ZZ:YY:XX - this means your bluetooth is connected and
recognized

Write in terminal hidd -s but don't hit Enter yet. Take the keyboard in your
hands, turn it around and you'll see a little red button. Press it few times
and in terminal hit enter to run hidd -s. You'll notice hidd will try to find
any bluetooth device in the range and normally it'll find your keyboard. If not
found try pressing the red button again and running hidd few times too.
Repeat the procedure for the mouse. The mouse is in pairing mode when all the
power indicator leds are flashing at the same time. Repeat a couple of times if
it doesn't work the first time.

If keyboard and mouse are found, start blueman-manager.
Click search and press the red button on the bottom of the keyboard a couple of
times. Normally the keyboard should be found. Connect and enter a pin code.
Confirm the pincode on the BT keyboard. The keyboard should work now.
Repeat the procedure for the mouse. Normally it should not ask you for a PIN
code. If it does, try with , , or 1234 - these are common default
PIN codes for Logitech devices.

To repeat: the bug is not fixed, this is just a workaround. This
complicated is not needed for other distributions.

[Bug 330910] Re: png generation fails when /var/log/bootchart does not exist

2009-02-19 Thread amedee
Scott,

Thank you for explaining. I find it very considerate of you that you have taken
the time.
It seems that my initial reading of the FHS may have been a bit superficial.
I now understand your point of view, and I agree with the status of wontfix.
However, I will try to locate a relevant document on the Ubuntu wiki, and
document the issue for posterity.

This issue also _needs_ to be in Lanchpad, even with status wontfix, because it
is likely that this issue may be reported again by someone else, or related
issues concerning /var/log (or others) on tmpfs. This is because of netbooks
with SSD. A very common configuration is to put certain directories in tmpfs,
to reduce write actions on the SSD.
If you ever encounter other issues related to /var/log (or /var/tmp or
/var/run), the you can mark them as a duplicate of this one.

[Bug 330910] [NEW] png generation fails when /var/log/bootchart does not exist

2009-02-18 Thread amedee
Public bug reported:

Release: I observed the problem in Intrepid and Jaunty.
Package (for Jaunty): bootchart (0.9-0ubuntu14)

When there is no /var/log/bootchart directory, bootchart fails to create a png
file inside this directory.
A possible condition for a non-existing /var/log/bootchart directory is when
/var/log is mounted as a tmpfs. This is a common configuration for netbooks
with a SSD. At each reboot, /var/log is wiped and of course the bootchart
subdirectory doesn't exist any more.

Suggested fix:
Add the following to /etc/init.d/stop-bootchart

 # Where we drop charts
 CHARTS=/var/log/bootchart
+mkdir -p $CHARTS

Alternative fix:

 # Where we drop charts
 CHARTS=/var/log/bootchart
+if [ ! -d $CHARTS ]; then
+mkdir -p $CHARTS
+fi

I leave it up to the package maintainer which of the two is the better solution.
It also doesn't matter when the directory is created, perhaps it is even better
to create it inside the start) case?
As long as it exists before java is called to create the png, it is ok.

I suppose that this problem also exists upstream.
Do I have to report it myself upstream, or will this be done automatically?

** Affects: bootchart (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 330910] Re: png generation fails when /var/log/bootchart does not exist

2009-02-18 Thread amedee
Hello Scott,
Thank you for your reaction.

I disagree that the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS) explicitly does
not permit /var/log to be on a tmpfs.

Grepping on tmpfs and on tmp in the current version (2.3) of the FHS
gives the following results:

ame...@intrepid { ~ }$ curl http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.txt.gz -s |
zgrep tmpfs
ame...@intrepid { ~ }$ curl http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.txt.gz -s |
zgrep tmp
/tmp : Temporary files
/var/tmp : Temporary files preserved between system reboots
tmp Temporary files
/tmp : Temporary files
The /tmp directory must be made available for programs that require temporary
Programs must not assume that any files or directories in /tmp are preserved
Although data stored in /tmp may be deleted in a site-specific manner, it
is recommended that files and directories located in /tmp be deleted
/usr/tmp - /var/tmp
tmp Temporary files preserved between system reboots
wtmp record of all logins and logouts
The utmp file, which stores information about who is currently using the
/var/tmp : Temporary files preserved between system reboots
The /var/tmp directory is made available for programs that require temporary
stored in /var/tmp is more persistent than data in /tmp.
Files and directories located in /var/tmp must not be deleted when the system
is booted. Although data stored in /var/tmp is typically deleted in a
interval than /tmp.

I also read the FHS 2.3 in great detail.

According to my reading and understanding of the FHS 2.3,
the following directories inside /var *must* be _preserved_ between reboots:
/var/cache
/var/tmp
the following directories inside /var *should* be _preserved_ between reboots:
/var/lib
the following directories inside /var *must* be _removed_ between reboots:
/var/run

FHS does not explicitly say anything about /var/log being preserved
between reboots, so storing /var/log on a tmpfs is not explicitly
forbidden by the FHS and therefor it is allowed.

I can understand that you disagree with me that this issue ought to be
fixed, but according to my reading of the published FHS you cannot use
it as an argument.

I am, however, open for every other argument against this fix.

Re: [Bug 32178] Re: Installer couldn't mount NTFS partitions.

2009-01-27 Thread amedee
On Tue, January 27, 2009 12:39, Colin Watson wrote:

Have you tried to simulate the problem?
You should try with various partition types: FAT, NTFS, XFS,...
First you try to mount them on a top-level directory that is *not* one of
the usual /etc /bin /usr /var ... but something else like /windows /mydata
/thisisatest ...

Then you try to mount the same partition on /media/windows /media/mydata
/media/thisisatest

Ramon Rocha claims that the first approach won't work, and the second will
work. It is unfortunate that he did not provide a link to the forum topic
where he found the solution.
