[Bug 765390] Re: (Regression) indicator-weather is not seeded; cannot be right-click added under Unity
I'd like to withdraw my endorsement of indicator-weather. It's not a stable piece of software, and routinely freezes up or fails to update. (It's useless) It's certainly not ready to replace the existing gnome 2 version. I'm also surprised that there is no notification area anymore, so I can't access my dropbox or google desktop applications from Unity. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/765390 Title: (Regression) indicator-weather is not seeded; cannot be right-click added under Unity -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

While I understand where you're coming from, I don't think that excuses how terrible and unusable Unity is. Its design is simply not appropriate or functional. [Bug 648180] Re: Unity is not an adequate replacement for Gnome2 (and sucks a little bit less then it used to)
Exactly. What I wish they would do, is to treat the Unity thing as an opt-in deal, and find some way to figure out how many people actually prefer the new UI over the old one. If, after a year, more people opt in than out, then call it a success and make it the default UI. I'd bet a dollar that far less than half would opt for the new UI. In fact, I'll bet they already know this and that it's exactly why they have to force it on people to get anyone to actually give it a chance. :-P -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/648180 Title: Unity is not an adequate replacement for Gnome2 (and sucks a little bit less then it used to) -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

"You know you can go back to Gnome 2." Yes, I know. My wife has already opted to do so. She tried Unity for about 2 days, thought it was some kind of sick joke and requested that I "fix" her computer. I'm a ten year Linux veteran and I figured we were finally getting somewhere with this Linux on the desktop thing. Often when a piece of software is this badly designed, you just throw it away and start over. Treat it as a learning experience. In this case I think there are some good ideas floating around. :) They're just in the wrong place, behave the wrong way, and provide the wrong functionality. :-P And if I can stay and help "fix" unity, I'm just stubborn enough that I will. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/648180 Title: Unity is not an adequate replacement for Gnome2 (and sucks a little bit less then it used to) -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 771418] Re: Ubuntu kernels above version 2.6.35-25 fail to load > 50% of the time
** Description changed: Hopefully the apport contains enough specific information about my system. Ever since Ubuntu 10.10 moved on from release 25 of the 2.6.35 kernel, it's taken several hard resets to get my system to complete an initialisation of the kernel and continue to boot. When I was still - running 10.10, I continued to selected release 25 of the 2.6.35 kernel - as it was the only one that reliably booted for me. All newer versions + running 10.10, I continued to select release 25 of the 2.6.35 kernel as + it was the only one that reliably booted for me. All newer versions failed to complete the kernel initialisation, even in debug mode. Following the debug output was not particularly revealing. On several occasions I took note of the last message printed by the kernel after a failure to boot. The freezes occurred during CPU initialisation, during USB initialisation, during SATA initialisation, etc... In other words, - never the same twice, pointing possibly to a race condition or timing - problem. + never the same twice, pointing possibly to a race condition or another + timing problem. Once the system boots it's perfectly stable with all hardware working properly. But by my count it will only complete the kernel initialisation less than 1/6 of the time. As someone who's done a little bit of system programming on multicore systems, this looks very much to me like a race condition, where a lock isn't being set where/when it should be. Since I'm booting from an SSD, something might be getting loaded sooner than it normally would be. At the moment I'm running 11.04 2.6.38-8-generic and can reproduce this bug easily, if anyone has any ideas how I might go about providing the information necessary to debug it and find the cause. As I don't reboot often and prefer to use standby, I'm able to continue using ubuntu despite how difficult it is to achieve a successful boot- up. Since upgrading to 11.04 I no longer have access to 2.6.35-25, so if someone could give me a hint as to how to revert to that kernel version, I'd very much appreciate it as well. [Bug 765390] Re: Weather functionality missing from Unity (Regression)
As a programmer with an MCS, I often feel like an idiot making a usability suggestion like this one. I mean it's not as if I can't figure out how to get weather on my computer. I'm making this suggestion because most of the people I know are not MCS graduates and have found the transition to Unity jarring for this and other reasons. I'm just trying to make a suggestion about something that a lot of people use (including myself), and are finding difficult to locate within the Unity interface. If you guys are satisfied that it's easy enough for people to find, great. But I'm just saying that this hasn't been my experience. Wherever it moved, whatever replaced it, and however you access it now, it's not where people expect to find it. Maybe that's not an issue that anyone wants to tackle, but I just want to make sure I'm clear on what issue I'm reporting, and that I'm not looking for technical support.

This point of this bug was to make weather easily available to users without having to add the PPA repository and install an unstable applet. I could change it to a wish list item, if that would sit better with people. The point is to get weather functionality as easily accessible as it once was. [Bug 765390] [NEW] Weather functionality missing from Unity (Regression)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: unity Gnome 2 contained a feature which allowed it to show the local weather conditions next to the clock. I personally find this feature extremely useful and I check it nearly every time I leave the house or my office at work. Arguably it's more to me than the date and time display since I wear a watch. [Bug 648180] Re: Unity sucks
There really needs to be a way to just pull out the old application menu. Maybe the new cartoonish search box and huge icons could be gotten used to, but if there was an obvious way to just browse applications the same way we used to, it would be a heck of a lot less jarring for those of us who just want to use the darn thing. Having to click a random icon and then click a category just doesn't cut it. The pull down categorized menu is a time tested and fairly efficient way to browse applications, and I see no good reason to not include it in the unity menu as a fall back. Not to mention the face that everybody is used to it. :-P Moreover, human beings get used to a certain pattern when they're trying to do something, like finding a system setting for example. The system menu, from my perspective, was one of those things that Ubuntu/Gnome always got right. When I think setting, I think of the system menu. Now that's all gone. I have absolutely no idea where to look for those things. I just have to seriously question how much forethought could has possibly gone into this project to simply dump such a useful feature and to not provide anything even resembling it within that huge unity menu. It's just not good UI design to spend years getting people used to one way of working, and then not even bother to take account of those usage patterns when designing the new UI. I hate to bring up MS again, but it took me all of 2 seconds to find the traditional programs menu after they brought out the new start menu in Vista/7. Or the control panel. That's called *forethought*. And to successfully design UIs, you simply can't ignore your clientel's usage patters which you have put so much time and effort into fostering. That's just bad design, bad business, and...wellbad! I too have missed the minimize all button, but at least Ubuntu has finally started to incorporate the windows shortcut keys that everyone is familiar with. I also have to say that I really miss middle click pasting without having to copy text. To me that was always one of those little things that made Linux worth using over windows, and it will be sincerely missed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/648180 Title: Unity sucks -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 648180] Re: Unity sucks
I can wholeheartedly confirm this issue in 11.04. It's not that it's totally broken or anything. It's just that it's a design disaster. Even a simple thing like browsing with the mouse to the program I want is virtually impossible to figure out, and ends up taking a half dozen clicks. The side bar is clunky and I absolutely hate the fact that I have to scroll along it, even with only a hand full of custom launchers. This UI may look nice but as a human I can honestly say that it's the worst desktop UI I've seen in a very long time. I will try to stick it out and get used to it, but chances are I'll be opting out for the classic Gnome UI within a week, and contemplating a move to another distro shortly after. I realise that the Ubuntu team puts a lot of time and effort into improving the UI and I don't mean to be critical. But this new Unity thing just doesn't seem to work for me at any level, and I've been using Linux as a primary desktop for over 10 years. I'm an IT professional with two degrees in computer science. In that time I've seen some pretty terrible UIs, but until now, nothing that feels like it's intentionally designed to be a barrier between me and accessing and using the programs on my computer. I really hope this either gets a major overhaul or gets chucked on the scrap heap. Because I love Ubuntu but I'm just not sure how long I can put up with it. While I'm not a fan of Windows, I think they at least understand that when making a major change like this, that you have to make absolutely sure that you're not getting in the user's way. I realise you don't have the kind of testing team it takes to determine this, so here it is: this interface gets in the user's way! It's a total fail. And it needs to be dropped until such a time as it doesn't get in the user's way.

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver
Exactly. But you shouldn't have gone to this broken boot-up software in the first place before you had the bugs out of it. When it doesn't work on essentially all high end graphics hardware and a good portion of low end hardware, it doesn't work. I'm sick of Ubuntu repeated replacing working software with broken software because some corporate egg head thinks it's the way forward. I can understand why they do it, but I can still make it crystal clear to you why it was the wrong choice to move to Plymouth. Maybe there are some back-end benefits to it. But seeing as it is an extremely visible part of the user experience that everybody sees, I really think Ubuntu shot itself in the foot by replacing the beautiful boot up sequence of 9.10 with this broken piece of , only to fix it *after* the LTS release. I think this bug speaks of everything that's wrong with Linux on the desktop, which can easily be summarized briefly as a prioritization of some developer's idea of inner beauty over the *actual* user experience. Nobody cares if Plymouth is a couple seconds faster or easier for developers to work with if it looks like . And the fact that LTS users have to live with this horrible decision it is just plain disturbing. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/563878 Title: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 696539] [NEW] No sound after reboot from NVidia GeForce GT 430 HDMI audio
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pulseaudio I have an NVidia Geforce GT 430 graphics card with HDMI output. The HDMI audio works fine in Window 7, so I know all the hardware is OK. After booting into Ubuntu 10.10 (with updates applied) and selecting HDA NVidia in sound preferences, I get no sound from any program. aplay -l lists 4 devices for card 1: 3, 7, 8, 9. I can get sound by running "aplay -D plughw:1,9 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav" but never the first time. To get this command to produce sound I first have to run "aplay -D plughw:1,8 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav". This produces a click sound in the speakers, after which I can get sound from "aplay -D plughw:1,9 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav". The sound is clear and undistorted. (I'm assuming this is because the alsa driver isn't initializing the card properly.) After I perform the above steps to trick the card into working, I can usually select the card (HDA NVidia) in sound preferences and get badly distorted sound through any program. It seems like there are two problems here: the card isn't initializing properly, and after it has been initialized pulseaudio can't play audio through it properly (as evidenced by the bad distortion.) [Bug 611810] Re: [PATCH] NVIDIA GPU audio-over-HDMI: Patch required to support recent GPUs
I'm able to get sound if I run the following command a few times form the terminal: aplay -D plughw:1,9 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav I have to run it repeatedly before I get any sound. Once I do get sound through the speakers, sound then works through other programs too (through pulse), but it is very distorted...almost unlistenable. So this could be an issue with pulseaudio, since sound through aplay sounds clear but sound through pulse (once I get it to work) is distorted. Sound never plays normally after a reboot. So far I've always had to fiddle with aplay until it starts working. Then I can play through pulse. I suspect that this bug is a result of the design of dpkg. Does anybody know specifically what causes the popups? Is it the installation scripts in the individual packages? As an experienced Linux user I'm just glad to be able to upgrade, although honestly I've yelled at my computer over this one after walking away to let an upgrade run, only to come back and find that it's stopped and waiting for input several hours from completion. What it comes down to is that this issue requires the user to attend the upgrade which can sometimes take 10-12 hours, and which clearly should not require periodic user input. So from an HCI standpoint it's extremely bad behavior. And while I realize the difficulty in bringing together thousands of separate package scripts into a coherent user interface, I think this bug really deserves much more developer attention than it seems to have gotten. [Bug 10686] Re: No GUI method to disable screen lock on lid close event
@gideon07 Yes...you are right. When I go to the user menu to suspend, it locks the screen on resume. But when I use the power button which is configured to suspend, it respects the setting in gconf-editor in #19. -- No GUI method to disable screen lock on lid close event https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/10686 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 10686] Re: No GUI method to disable screen lock on lid close event
I have have this problem with every Ubuntu since 8.04. Still just as annoying on 9.10. Using gconf-editor as described in #19 worked. [Bug 228306] Re: Cannot get hard drive temperature as non root user with hddtemp in hardy
I can confirm this in Ubuntu 9.04. I haven't noticed anyone report this bug on an NVidia card. I have an NVidia GeForce 8800GT and I have huge text in the login manager. I also have huge text in KDE, although GNOME is fine. [Bug 64630] Re: Crashes when trying to record (Segmentation Fault)
I can confirm this bug. Among many other issues, this bug will probably force me to install gentoo again. I agree 100% with the other poster. As a musician, rezound is essential equipment, and not only for single track. It's also one of only a couple free multitrack programs out there for linux and the only really superb one.
