[Bug 1933880] Re: systemd-logind crash when suspend with nvidia-suspend.service masked, bringing session down with it

2021-11-24 Thread apienk
For me, with nvidia-driver-495, the simple solution was to remove the
damaged symlinks from systemd. You most likely have them if you upgraded
from nvidia-driver-470 or nvidia-driver-465, because 470 still included
the .service files in /lib/systemd/system/. The files are no longer
included in 495 but the postinst script does not remove the symlinks.
So, remove them with:

sudo rm
/etc/systemd/system/systemd-hibernate.service.requires/nvidia-resume.service
sudo rm
/etc/systemd/system/systemd-hibernate.service.requires/nvidia-hibernate.service
sudo rm
/etc/systemd/system/systemd-suspend.service.requires/nvidia-resume.service
sudo rm
/etc/systemd/system/systemd-suspend.service.requires/nvidia-suspend.service

Works instantly, no need of rebooting or logging off.

According to user punyidea at
https://gist.github.com/bmcbm/375f14eaa17f88756b4bdbbebbcfd029, the
services are not needed on 470 either and may be safely removed.

Hope that will fix your problems as well.

[Bug 1872244] Re: Jack audio not working on Ubuntu 20.04 running on a Thinkpad Carbon X1 (7th gen)

2021-04-21 Thread apienk
Daniel, thanks for the workaround! It works! I can confirm that JACK not
starting on SOF can be fixed by just setting the period to 1008 or 2040.
I'm on Dell G5.

However, JACK with such a setup is completely unusable for me. All
applications produce noise instead of proper sound, probably expecting a
power of 2 frame sizes. The only setting which helps somewhat is "Force
16-bit" ("works" only for period of 1080, not for 2040) which makes the
sound almost normal, but with crackling distortion.

[Bug 790130] Re: no pressure sensitivity with wacom tablet in inkscape

2016-08-26 Thread apienk
The 'sudo apt-get remove overlay-scrollbar' workaround works (except
pointer-stroke dislocation) in Ubuntu 16.04 but I can't set mapping to
'Screen', only 'Window' works. I mean I can set it to 'Screen' but it is
not effective. When I close the settings window with 'Screen' selected
and reopen, the mapping is set to 'Off'. Only 'Window' stays on. This
looks like Inkscape is reading cursor position using Screen mapping but
Stylus position using Window mapping -- thus the dislocation. Hope that
helps.

[Bug 741995] Re: Unity acts not as a dock for LibreOffice but as a launcher

2013-11-03 Thread apienk
I know this is not about the PPA version, but maybe this workaround
will help to track down the cause. On opening a Writer file from
Nautilus, a duplicate but low-res blue Writer icon appears in the dock.
Opening a second Writer file produces TWO new icons in the dock: one
low-res blue Writer, and one blank white (empty document). I found out
that resetting Unity (unity --reset) fixes the dock's behaviour -- I get
two arrows next to a single Writer laucher icon. However, if after that
I open a third file, the dock still produces a duplicate icon.

Ubuntu 12.04 (64-bit), Unity 5.20, libreoffice 4.1.3~rc2 (PPA)

[Bug 828756] Re: getting connection is untrusted warnings

I might have a clue. The bug appeared right after I added 'empathy -h'
to auto-start applications, and it manifests on every cold (reboot) or
warm start (after hibernating). So it seems that gnome-keyring daemon is
still restarting while empathy tries to access the certificates. A
simple wait would fix it.

2012-07-16 Thread apienk
My system is also affected by this bug. On music playback, the sound

strong suspition this might be related to acpi. When I am translating a
video, turning playback on and off very frequently, I hear a silent
click in my headphones 5 or 6 seconds after the playback stops. I
believe this is pulseaudio powering down audio card to avoid amplifying
white noise. Now I am looking for some way to make pulseaudio not to do
it.

RE: [Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installingATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

2011-03-17 Thread apienk
Plymouth is meant to provide a nice-looking full-resolution boot screen
on all DRM-capable graphics cards thus avoiding archaic text screen or
lame WindowsXP-like low resolution logo. And it works fine until user
decides to install a proprietary driver which does not like some other
driver to be loaded before it. The behaviour cannot be changed because
the driver is proprietary (try forcing Nvidia and ATI to amend this).
That's why making a neater bootscreen experience requires the new
opensource graphics drivers - 'nouveau' for Nvidia and 'radeon' for ATI.
Both are still incomplete but work, try them. Compiz team even
recommends nouveau over proprietary drivers.

So I don't really understand what the fuss is about. Use open drivers -
a default choice for most users - or if you really have to stay with
proprietary, a simple tweak using VESA mode (explained earlier in this
thread) can get you a nice bootscreen again.

By the way, it is easy to moan, but it is harder to get your own hands
dirty. This is free software! You don't pay for it!

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

2010-05-09 Thread apienk
@PDP
The ca. 10 seconds black screen delay also happens on my system but happened
already before the changes in grub and initramfs were made. In my bootchart I
can see that plymouthd is starting just 6 seconds after grub. I don't know why
it doesn't show the splash right on.

Changing the screen driver from accelerated to VBE should not generate a
noticeable increase in booting time. The few seconds delay observed may
be due to ureadahead which has to 'learn' again how to boot quicker. The
delay should vanish after several reboots.

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI graphics driver

2010-05-06 Thread apienk
Here's a workaround that solved the problem for me:

1) enable framebuffer mode:

echo FRAMEBUFFER=y sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
sudo update-initramfs -u

2) add this line to /etc/default/grub (The resolution has to be
supported by BIOS. To check, execute vbeinfo at grub2 prompt.):

GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1024x768

3) and finally:

sudo update-grub2

[Bug 565137] Re: osplugin crashed with TypeError in set_uid()

2010-05-05 Thread apienk
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 546305 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/546305

For me, the older opensync.py attached to this thread does not solve the
problem. I copied it over /usr/share/pyshared/opensync.py, and re-run
sync. The result was a crash (the last lines of output):

Member 1 of type synce-opensync-plugin just sent all changes
All clients sent changes or error
Pipe closed! Exiting.
Pipe closed! Exiting.
Segmentation fault

In Karmic it worked flawlessly. Trying to sync HTC Touch Pro with Lucid
amd64.

I couldn't comment on the bug #546305 - no permission to access the
page.

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI graphics driver

2010-05-05 Thread apienk
I'm also affected on NVidia GeForce Go 6100 using a proprietary driver
from repos. I haven't tried any workarounds yet because I am faithfully
expecting a fix released soon. The extra 6 seconds of boot time is not a
problem for me because due to another bug in Karmic my boot process used
to freeze for 25 seconds with a black screen and no disk activity (THIS
was scary!) just after grub. In fact, a finished product look IS
important for Ubuntu to draw new users. This low-res splash screen is
awful, as well as the boot console when you press Ctrl-F1.

[Bug 302976] Re: [Intrepid] Devede does not start in locales EL, PL, SK and SV

[Bug 360378] Re: Gave up waiting for root device after upgrade then busybox console

2009-04-26 Thread apienk
Exactly the same happening for me after upgrade to Jaunty. BusyBox
returns every time. The known rootdelay=90 workaround doesn't work. Grub
recognizes the partitions correctly right from the start, and the UUIDs
are proper, but kernel fails to find the root drive.

I am using a laptop with a SATA hard drive that worked well with Edgy,
Feisty, Gutsy, and Intrepid.

[Bug 231538] Re: Totem-Gstreamer seek problems

2008-11-27 Thread apienk
I can confirm the problem persists in Intrepid. I have tested seeking in
totem using libgstreamer 0.10.21-4 with MPEG2, AVI (xvid), FLV, and OGG
(Theora) files, and got the following results:

mpeg2: Seek doesn't work as expected. When the slider is moved and then
released, it jumps backwards. The length of the jump is progressively
bigger towards the end of the file. For 50-minute mpeg film it is
impossible to seek to the last 10 minutes, because when slider is moved
to the far right the clock shows about 41 minutes! Seeking with keyboard
also is unusable, and quite crazy. In play mode, using single keypresses
(right arrow) advances my 50-minute film by decreasing leaps up to about
timecode 04:37, and then the behaviour reverses - each keypress actually
moves the film backwards. When I press and hold the key, it ultimately
starts to seek forward, but never reaches the end, because at 00:30
minutes or so the slider just starts to jump wildly back and forth. In
pause mode seeking works, but also stops at 00:41, unable to reach the
final 10 minutes of the file.

avi: Seek works reliably, with a small backjump of 2-3 seconds.

flv: Seek works reliably, with a small backjump of 1-2 seconds.

ogg: Seek works reliably to the very second.

Devede shows this and quits. Devede developers know this problem and
have issued fixed version 3.11b. Please update Ubuntu repositories with
this version. According to developers, the bug manifests only in 4
locales: EL, PL, SK and SV. Look at
http://www.rastersoft.com/programas/devede.html (scroll down to History
of versions).

The temporary fix is to uninstall devede and reinstall the fixed deb provided
by the developers (the uninstall step is necessary because the fixed deb is
identified as older by apt):
