[Bug 1907445] Re: bcmwl-kernel-source 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu5: bcmwl kernel module failed to build

2021-01-09 Thread arm-c
Ok. The best solution for this is posted here on ask ubuntu. The issue
is with the LTS update, it did not include the updated bcmwl file when
it switches the Kernel to the HWE version. This is the link to where I
found the solution I used and it solves my problem.

I chose option one.

[Bug 1907445] Re: bcmwl-kernel-source 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu5: bcmwl kernel module failed to build

2021-01-06 Thread arm-c
I just ran updates on my laptop... got error message:

Error while applying changes
pk-client-error-quark: Error while installing package: installed
bcmwl-kernel-source package post-installation script subprocess returned error
exit status 10 (313)

I lost all of my wifi card in my MacBook Air.

RECOVERY: For those like me, recovery can be a challenge. I didn't see how to
get back to a older kernel while working through rEFInd boot manager but
what got me out of this issue was.

- Open Additional drivers (Super Menu, type 'Drivers' and select).
- After scan for "Proprietery Drivers in Use"... switch option to "do not use
this device" and apply.
- Reboot and hopefully your Wifi is restored.

I then ran all updates (sudo apt update & sudo apt upgrade). I went
back to additional drivers and tried reinstalling... got error... but it
appears to have taken... even after reboot.

[Bug 1448668] Re: Grub menu hangs on down arrow press with USB keyboard on cold boot

2018-12-26 Thread arm-c
Not sure if it is the same issue, but sounds very similar.

Situation: GRUB freezes on my laptop at countdown 10 with not ability
to move anything. Currently, this happens everytime my external
keyboard is attached.

Equipment: HP X360 i7 configured dual boot. USB 3.1 (USB-A), USB 3.1
(USB-C) and Thunderbolt (USB-C). UEFI Boot.

This is an issue because I want to leave my computer docked and survive
a reboot without having to unplug the keyboard all the time. I've
googled solutions and "legacy boot" would disable my installed OSs.
There is not bios option for "legacy USB" support and none of the GRUB-2
configurations to enable USB, usb-keyboard, etc... have worked.

MY KEYBOARD works before and after grub meaning, that at power-on, I
can press F10 on usb-keyboard and get to BIOS. Plugging in the keyboard
after GRUB boot, keyboard works.

I have tried three separate keyboard... all of which I know are working.

[Bug 1725384] Re: On touch screens, the apps icon in the dock does not open when touched

2018-10-15 Thread arm-c
Hello,

For what it is worth. I am affected by the same bug. It is frustrating.
I agree with all of the information presented above regarding the bug
and I have SOMETHING NEW TO ADD.

NEW: Not seen referenced anywhere is that a similar feature in
"Workspaces to Dock" add on works exactly as expected when you enable
the "favorites" feature. Touching (finger) ONCE on show installed
applications reveals the installed applications. This information may
be useful for those that are trouble shooting.

Confirmed The Following on my HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-bl1XX.
>> Gnome Dash acts as expected without Dash to Dock, Dash to Bar, or Ubuntu
>> Dock installed / active. (Clicking on show apps shows app with one click).
>> I suspect that all share similar code to initiate show apps.
>> Initiating with long press then sliding finger off of show applications
>> after expanded will leave drawer open.
>> Looks like sliding finger in from side of screen will show applications
>> (default Gnome actions)... BUT it would be nice if swiping in again from
>> side will return to pre-swipe conditions. As it stands now, you must press
>> Escape Key, clicking show applications icon again and subsequently an open
>> application, or clicking "Activities" in top left.
>> staring an application that permits multiple instances (ie terminal / files)
>> will start two instances if started from click.

Presently, I am going to switch back to default gnome dash because of
the touch issues... and use "pinch" to show open windows and swipe in to
show applications. Hope they fix this sooner than later as I do like
the "Dash to Dock/Bar" extensions.

[Bug 701505] Re: Problem with Adobe Reader update: Unable to find the HTML rendering library

2015-11-24 Thread arm-c
presently, I have received this error on 32 and 64 bit machines. It
doesn't appear to be just the arch issue. Perhaps we can "statically
link" the required files to the application?

RELATED and PERHAPS helpful for other readers:

I would love to have a means to address this... I frequently have to use
Acrobat for digital form signing... as well as it is the ONLY program
that handles the XFA format that is embedded in many PDF forms. There
is NO program for Linux that I am aware of that provides this support.
Even worse, as time goes on, Adobe has taken the XFA standard from the
AcroReader 9 version (3.0) to at least 3.3, so no AcroReader doesn't
reliably open every PDF document out there.

For reference, if you are needing to sign documents that are not XFA
enabled, the non-free *** PDF Studio *** presently provides support for
PKCS#11 smartcard certificate signatures. A little intense to setup
initially (read their site for instructions), but once set up, it works
well (BTW, you can use the coolkey pkcs11 library instead of the other
pkcs11 library their instructions reference).

In dialog with Master PDF Editor, they indicated they will add support
for XFA and digital signatures in a future release... but no time was
provided for this enhancement...

Wine is not an option. Had partial success (read fail) by getting Wine
Adobe 11 to see my smartcard, import certificates, but no further.
Tried Adobe 11 until blue in face, and it would always crash when
clicking on "sign".

The best solution (an distasteful) is to use dual boot OR run a virtual
machine with Windows in it...

[Bug 1313446] Re: window disappears on toggle shade

2015-01-23 Thread arm-c
DATA LOSS: I would like to up vote this because I have in-directly
experienced data loss by having a window with input (email) that I went
always on top and then shadded. My email disappeared. I had no way
to get back to it unless I clossed the browser windows that were
visible... only then did it re-appear. HOWEVER, that window had lost
connection to my server at that point, so the data was lost.

I would like very much for this to get fixed. The Always on top and
shade feature has long been a strong point for my linux use and
workflow. Unity has grown a lot and I now uaually find it the DE I
prefer to work in unless I need shaded windows and so forth...

[Bug 1242886] Re: Regression: List boxes do not properly resize when given height

Using Ubuntu 14.04 Beta 2

This is a REAL issues that will effect multiple users.(See Bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zenity/+bug/1192101?comments=all
where a user suggests a fix.)

I encountered as an issue while trying to configure my input (keyboard)
to support using Hangul (Korean) using im-config. Fortunately, I
noticed there was an option to run in concole (im-config -c) so I was
able to notice the option that I needed to select.

Any individual needing to configure Ubuntu to use a CJK language
(possibly more) and any users requiring access to zenity based prompts
are likely to have this issue. Ubuntu is supposed to be easy for
newBs... this makes it unnecissarily difficult and makes Ubuntu look un-
polished. (BTW, very impressed with direction Unity / Ubuntu are taking
in 14.04)

[Bug 1293740] Re: Shaded windows minimized automatically

2014-04-05 Thread arm-c
I tend to utilize shaded windows (and always on top) a lot in my work
flow. This is a key element that I have LOVED about linux since way
back when i first started using the OS (2007) as my full time desktop
OS.

This really needs to get fixed... sure I can work around it... but I am
sure others are affected as it is a fairly common linux Desktop

[Bug 759888] Re: unity transparency/blur not updated when background changes

2011-09-29 Thread arm-c
The issue is it LOOKS very unprofessional. The cause is the Dash
transparency setting of static and what it remembers. For some
reason, my beta version was defaulted to this and if it were not for me
__knowing__ to look in the compiz configuration settings would I have
figured it out.

A better solution would be for static transparency to actually produce
a background comprised of the actual desktop wallpaper/color used.

While I will post at another point, it is worth mentioning here also
that the Active Blue setting results in a view that is too cluttered
resulting in difficulty in reading the in focus
materials/filenames/etc... A reasonable setting must be attained here.

I find that the most aesthetic appearance is a static blur that is
done with a clean copy of my wall paper. My second preference is a
static color or a very DARK smoke with limited transparency.

[Bug 837993] Re: Where the average background colour is either very light or dark, adjust this value to darken/lighten in order to preserve readability

2011-09-29 Thread arm-c
The concept is great. The implementation is not.

Give me a smoked glass option where white text / icons are very visible.
Put only a slight transparency and blur to the dash window.

tankdriver (stoneraider) wrote on 2011-09-16: (#4 above) is right on
the money.

When I open DASH, I want to be able to dash through and find what I want
and move on. Presently, I STUMBLE instead and have to look very hard
and the background icons/colors are always distracting and making the
foreground difficult to read.

I vote for options that include the following:

a. Smoked Glass Option.

b. Option for blurred wallpaper (without showing windows above or icons
on desktop.).

c. Pannel, launcher, and dash background based on theme color... not
wallpaper.

I'm only after one thing in reality - a readable dash with no
distractions to reading it.

[Bug 834207] Re: Frosted glass ghosting effect makes Dash icons look fuzzy, broken

2011-09-29 Thread arm-c
The blurred effect for icons when no transparency looks unprofessional.
Looks broken and unfinished. PLEASE fix this.

Also, I really prefer to have dash background (static blur / other) to
have option of showing a clean/iconless version of current desktop
color/wallpaper. Looks so much easier to look at and also make for a
much easier to read dash screen. Active Blur doesn't get it for me.

[Bug 862497] Re: thunderbird missing window decoration

2011-09-29 Thread arm-c
I have had this issue on at least two different programs where the
window looses the decorations (title bar).

a. Thunderbird New Message Window or opening a message in a new
window.

b. The second program that exhibited this issue was Compiz
Configurations Settings Manager (CSSM). It too lost window decorations.

In both cases, when the application window (new message / CSSM / etc...)
were maximized to full screen, the window controls appeared in the
Global Menu complete with close buttons.

Because this has appeared in two separate programs that probably don't
share the same code base, I suspect that the issue lies somewhere else.

[Bug 769273] Re: context menu closes on mouse over

2011-09-29 Thread arm-c
This is still an issue. I noticed it consistently with FF in 11.10 beta

The workaround of restore / maximize fixes the issue temporarily.

Would love to have this fixed, as it is very annoying and with so much
work done in browsers now days, it will certainly be a detractor to new
users of Ubuntu.

[Bug 39328] Re: Disable scrolling on window list to flip through windows

2009-09-14 Thread arm-c
I haven't read the whole thread, but this is not a bug. I understand
what has been mentioned and it can be annoying in some regard, but I
love the scroll between windows/tabs with the scroll button.

I don't use much on task bar, but I think that feature is a part of GTK
that is used in Gnome... hence the same features in tabs in Firefox,
dialog boxes, ets...

In compiz, the feature of scrolling to change windows is anoying. I
turned it off cause I always ended up on a part of a window (some
regions would scroll text but if in wrong place, would read as a
desktop hover scroll and flip my desktops. Easy answer here is to
make that not a default action.

I have noticed that on my laptop, I would have more erroneous flips,...

I'd recommend not to change the default actions. Frankly, I love Gnome
and wish that windows had the usability features like Gnome (push to
bottom, roll up, always on top, etc...).

[Bug 364617] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.04rc installer exceeds size of low resolution screen once the partitioner is started

2009-04-21 Thread arm-c
Public bug reported:

My computer has a nVidia card and boots from CD to low-res. The
installer went over twice the width of my screen when the partitioner
started due to the number of partitions I have (I think). HOWEVER, I am
not sure. Regardless, it made installation at that point rather
difficult and had I not known to use the ALT+Left Mouse to drag the
window, I would have been unable to continue the installation.

This is a serious bug for those that have my hardware and are NEW to

I knew I would be OK once I installed because of the nVidia driver

Re: [Bug 238861] Re: CAC Card - Auto Select Doesn't Work

2009-03-09 Thread arm-c
This is precisely the problem and people have been all over the issue
and even addressed means to get it to work properly but have done
nothing to it. It is still the same for years!

I'm a little frustrated seeing that... but it also explains more about
the issue.

BTW, did you know that after you select the right cert and then goto
prefs and turn off the always ask it will continue to use the correct
certificate?

I'm not at the point where I would presume to dive into the code and try
to fix it... but it really does need to ask just once for each session
or permit a person to align a particular site to a particular
certificate.

Sounds easy... doesn't it?? LOL

2009-02-15 Thread arm-c
Well, the MS Outlook Web Access client I access work through appears to
validate nearly every element also. Sounds same as your situation, but
with different web-application.

While I can use IE at work, at home I am a linux user, so Firefox is my
primary browser. Besides that, I prefer FF over IE even on windows
platform. Frustrating.

I wish I was a qualified programmer and able to do that level of code.
I'd try to pull the source code and go for it... sadly, I am not and am
just learning to program using Python. I have published a small
GUI/Python Script program on sourceforge for users of AcerHK Driver
(http://acerhkgui.sourceforge.net), but is NOTHING more than a VERY
basic script.

Slovenia. :) Former Yugoslavia. I thought that was a slovik name. I
(painfully) studied Czech for a year. An intensive course of 6hrs of
instruction a day + homework afterward. For all that pain, one would
think I could speak, but my intended purpose of studying in Brno for a
year didn't happen so I haven't used the language since then... and it
has faded.

Slovenia is supposed to be a very beautiful area. Even more so because
you all were not caught up in the Yugoslavia breakup disaster of Kosovo
/ Croatia / Serbia / Bosnia mess.

You mentioned writing code. Are you a programmer? What language do you
work with?

Yup, IE does exactly that! Choose once - use for the session. I needed
that feature while testing numerous different certificates for our Tax
Administration (e-Taxes). In Firefox this was non-doable. But now, I'm a
multi certificate user myself (different e-banks, different
certificates) and it's a real pain to do the choosing every time the
validation is due. Come to think of it, the e-banking sites are made
quite simple, asking you a couple of times, whilst at e-Taxes we
validated the user for every element of the page (just to be paranoidly
secure ;) ).

I'm from Slovenia, BTW.

creating a new profile does not solve anything for me. if i create a
fresh new profile and then add the extension, FF crashes. not having
the extension installed gets rid of the problem, but does not get me the
functionality that extension was to deliver (namely creating new webapps

[Bug 238861] [NEW] CAC Card - Auto Select Doesn't Work

2008-06-10 Thread arm-c
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Firefox doesn't remember which certificate I select for a site and
constantly asks me. Turning on the Let Firefox Choose when server

There should be a way to associate a CAC certificate with a certain

Firefox chooses to send.

This may not be a bug, but a feature that needs to be implemented... or
it possibly is already there but I can't find a solution by searching

[Bug 238861] Re: CAC Card - Auto Select Doesn't Work

2008-06-10 Thread arm-c
Alexander,

Thank you for the response.

about client certificates for authentication?: Because I am unsure of
terminology, I will try to be explicit. This is about how firefox
handles certificate requests from servers when queried. My
certificates are good and work, but require constantly selecting the
correct certificate.

I had no problem setting up my CAC card for use with Linux / Firefox
(DoD plugin pulled all certs that I needed and installed them to
firefox). Fairly straight forward process with some excellent guides
online.

WHAT AM I DOING: I connect to my work email through an outlook web
access server. Since there are certain security concerns, the site now
uses the CAC card to provide certificates to access the site.

WHAT I DO / SEE:

a. I connect to the URL. I SEE a dialog box prompting me for my CAC PIN which
is required to access my card and verify that I am the proper owner of the card.
b. I enter my PIN. I SEE a dialog box showing me the certificate that
FIREFOX wants to respond with (There are two on my card -- one normal and one
tagged email).
c. I select the second certificate because that is the one required for this
site. It always defaults to wrong certificate until I choose one for the first
time. I would like to note, that I am prompted multiple times for the
certificate, as I believe the site is pulling data from separate areas, each
requesting a certificate. I SEE finally outlook web access (OWA) interface.
d. While working in OWA, if I reply to an email, open calendars, tasks, etc...
I am prompted to select the certificate... sometimes multiple times in a row.
WHAT I SEE is that after a certain amount of time, firefox starts presenting me
with the correct certificate as its default selection (supports my thought that
there are multiple queries for the certifcate from different sources).

The above notes are what occurs on default firefox setting (choose
certificate everytime firefox is asked). If I wait until I see all of
my certificate requests are defaulting to email certificate and then
change the default setting of firefox to let firefox choose the
certificate to respond with, it works flawlessly with out any other
problems.

If I change the default settings to Let Firefox Choose prior to
connecting to site, FIREFOX ALWAYS chooses the wrong certificate and I
am locked out of the site. NOTE, that this is after a restart of
firefox that this occurs and not if I changed the settings after getting
through the initial series of selecting the certificate.

MY BELIEF:

1. Firefox has a bug in how it handles certificate requests. It is not
processing the request properly, so always defaults to wrong
certificate.

AND OR

2. Firefox is supposed to learn and remember the proper certificate
selected for the site and fails to do that, so switching to letting
firefox choose fails once it learns because it forgets the association
with the site.

OR

3. Firefox doesn't have the requiste functionality yet to handle the
certificates learning and it needs to be requested as a new feature. If
it needs to be implemented, the certificate handling should have another
option in which it asks for the correct certificate if it has not
learned/been told to remember the certificate/website association. It
should work something like the passwords and websites works in firefox.

OR

4. The functionality is there, I just don't know where it is and how to
configure it.

Thanks in advance. :)

ARM-C

I didn't use it previously because my recent update to GUSTY was on FRI,

Also of note, the GUSTY upgrade did break the function of my Tablet PC

I fixed this. The problem was that the network card itself has four WEP

I have no idea why it defaulted to key 4, but it did. It worked
flawlessly on MepisLite (previous linux used) before I wiped PC and put
ubuntu on it.

Thanks

[Bug 144482] Network Manager identifies wireless PCMCIA as eth1 and wifi0 - can't connect

2007-09-24 Thread arm-c
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I am logging this in from work where I don't have access to the computer
in question.

The computer is running Feisty. It hasn't been updated yet (no network
connection). I am trying to set up a wireless connection for it to use.
Feisty was installed without the PCMCIA card being present.

Upon inserting the card, it is recognized as two separate interfaces
simultaneiously. NM, manual config, shows both WiFi 0 and eth1 as being
wireless. (eth0 is built in wired nic and is identified correctly). It
should only identify the card as one or the other (and I think Ubuntu
preferrs to use eth1 instead of wifi0). Regardless, it is reporting two
wireless devices when there is only one.

I have had this problem on a different computer that was installed. It
always saw the card as both eth1 and wifi0.

One additional note. I noticed in the network tools dialogue that it
was actually reporting four cards:

eth0 - internal wired
eth1 - wireless --- NOTE - only reports a ipv6 ip.
eth1: - wireless (note, I can't remember what the x is) This connection
has an ipv4 ip.
wifi0 - wireless

I have tired editing the 'interfaces' file, but that hasn't helped with
anything. For the life of me, I don't know why this is happening nor do
I know how to get around it.

[Bug 80551] Re: openoffice fails to start if scim is the default GTK_IM_MODULE

2007-07-25 Thread arm-c
I will not belabour the point that the issue is with the ATI video card.
The simple fix for me was to edit the last line of the soffice.sh

 /etc/openoffice/soffice.sh

File contents:

# configuration file to set up some environment variables for OOo

# File locking; possible values are:
# - yes: enable file locking unconditionally
# - no: disable file locking
# - auto: enable file locking, when the document is found on a nfs share
# If the environment variable SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING is set,
# the setting if ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING has no effect.

FILE_LOCKING=auto

# OpenGL support; may cause trouble with the restricted nvidia and fglrx
# drivers; possible values are:
# - yes: enable OpenGL support unconditionally
# - no: disable OpenGL support.
# - auto: only enable OpenGL support, if not running with the restricted
# nvidia and fglrx drivers.
# If the environment variable SAL_NOOPENGL is set,
# the setting if OPENGL_SUPPORT has no effect.

OPENGL_SUPPORT=auto

Fixed it for me in OOo. Thanks for all the clues to the real issue
here.
