[Bug 398096] Re: Screen images blurred when resuming from hibernation

2010-09-09 Thread aspa

Working as a software developer, I'm generally sympathetic to the problems and
realities of software development and issues related to prioritizing bug
reports.

That said, I feel that often processing of bugs I've reported follow one of the
below patterns:
a) no response
b) after 6-12 months you're asked if the issue is reproducible in a newer
Ubuntu release

Given these outcomes, it sometimes feels a bit pointless to file a bug report
since sometimes they require quite a bit of an effort.

I'm currently using Lucid and this issue does not appear to be present
on that release.

After receiving and updated version of the linux-image-2.6.32-20-generic-pae
package the kernel boots again.
Btw, why wasn't the package sequence number updated after the change?

[Bug 530044] Re: Screensaver doesn't unlock

2010-03-19 Thread aspa
The same issue also appeared on a colleague's Ubuntu 9.10 installation.
He noticed some errors in /var/log/messages that may be related to this and I
also found the following messages in my machine's log file:

Mar 1 15:31:34 l3bz510 kernel: [ 8311.291902] gnome-screensav[8315]: segfault

at 0 ip b65b5185 sp b64d0de0 error 6 in pam_lsass.so[b65b2000+8000]

Could the problem be related to MS ActiveDirectory authentication and
Likewise?

The issue appeared all of a sudden on my computer and persisted for more
than two weeks until it disappeared about two days ago. I did boot the
system several times during that period.

I don't know if this is related but our MS Exchange email server started
to issue password expiration reminder notices to me a few weeks ago. I
changed my the password earlier this week and it was after that at some
point that the problem disappeared.

My colleague also mentioned getting password expiration notices.

[Bug 510683] Re: 'lsassd' has to be restarted in order to login

2010-03-07 Thread aspa
When I reboot the my Ubuntu 9.10 system, the accounts imported from MS AD are
not available for logging in.
lsassd service reports that it's running, however.
If I restart the service, MS AD accounts start working again.
This seems to happen consistently with every reboot and crash.

[Bug 530044] [NEW] Screensaver doesn't unlock

2010-03-01 Thread aspa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

It's sometimes impossible to log back into the system after the screen has been
locked.
When this problem occurs a blank screen appears when I enter the correct
password.
If I move the mouse or press a key, I get a new password prompt but it just
keeps prompting the password even if I enter it correctly.
I'm able to log in with the same user account from a virtual terminal.
I'm also able to log in using another account through X (switch user).

[Bug 526950] [NEW] GUI not responding after unlock

2010-02-24 Thread aspa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I locked the GUI for a while and when I logged in again windows or any other
GUI elements don't respond to mouse clicks anymore. For example menus don't
open, windows don't get activated when the title bar is clicked, virtual
desktop doesn't work (keyboard command or the applet) etc.
I was able to log in using a VT and there everything seemed to be working as
normal.
top didn't report any high process eating up the CPU or similar.
After waiting a while the screenlock got activated again and I logged in but
the problem remained.
Then I suspended the system (by closing the lid) and when it waked up the
screen didn't get locked but now the
GUI started to respond to mouse clicks.

[Bug 355785] Re: [LENOVO 64574XG] suspend/resume failure

2010-01-17 Thread aspa
I suppose this issue is still relevant for 9.04 but since I've upgraded to 9.10
I can't verify that right now.
I did have similar problems with 9.10 until I intalled the NVIDIA proprietary
video driver.

[Bug 398096] [NEW] Screen images blurred when resuming from hibernation

2009-07-11 Thread aspa
Public bug reported:

When the system is resuming from hibernation the screen images get blurred (see
attached pictures).
There are also a few loud beeps during resume.
Sometimes the progress bar in the first image (DSC_0004.JPG) gets split on two
rows.
After resuming the system seems to be working correctly.
The attachment also includes output from lspci.

This happens on a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 laptop running Ubuntu 9.04.
All the latest updates have been installed and the kernel version is
2.6.28-13-generic #45.

[Bug 356095] Re: Master boot record overwritten by installer

2009-06-20 Thread aspa
Concerning the comments in bug #388373:

I think some improvements suggested above could be implemented even in
the presence of Grub/Linux drive mapping problems and without making the
installer UI too complex:

1. when installing Grub, make the installer inspect the boot block
that's going to be overwritten and issue a warning if it's not on a
"safe to overwrite boot block types" list. In particular the installer
should be able to tell apart standard Windows boot block from boot
blocks containing e.g. Utimaco SafeGuard and Windows Bitlocker.

2. automatically make a backup of the existing boot block e.g. in the
Linux installation filesystem.

[Bug 356095] [NEW] Master boot record overwritten by installer

2009-04-06 Thread aspa
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 beta a system with one internal hard drive and one
external USB attached hard drive.
Ubuntu was installed on the external drive. The installer, however, installed
the Grub boot loader on the internal hard drive overwriting the MBR of that
disk without asking where I would like to install the boot loader.
Unfortunately, the internal hard drive contained a Windows installation and was
using full disk encryption software (Utimaco SafeGuard) so now it can't be
booted. All the data on the disk is probably unrecoverable.

The installer should ask the target location of the boot loader.
Also, it would be good if the installer could check if the existing boot block
contains something other than the basic Windows boot loader, and would issue
extra warnings if this is the case.
The installer could also automatically make a copy of the existing boot block
in the Linux installation since installing the boot loader is the last thing to
be done during the installation process.

[Bug 163521] Re: WLAN connection not being picked up after hibernation

2007-12-04 Thread aspa
** Summary changed:

- WLAN commention not being picked up after hibernation
+ WLAN connection not being picked up after hibernation

** Description changed:

-
Quite frequently my laptop fails to reconnect to the wireless lan after
waking up from hibernation.
Sometimes the network manager applet shows the network signal level
indication bars but there's no connectivity, sometimes the applet shows the
"connecting to network" indication but connection is never established.
Sometimes after hibernation I get the keyring password prompt and the system
is able to reconnect just fine.

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 with all the latest updates on Dell Latitude D620.

[Bug 61994] Prepare mount points should show partition types

2006-09-23 Thread aspa
Public bug reported:

during installation i made the following selections:
- Prepare disk space: Manually edit partition table
- Prepare partitions
- Prepare mount points

in the "Prepare mount points" phase, the user is shown all the disk
partitions which exist. the installer asks for the user to choose which
partitions to mount where and if the user wants to reformat partitions.

because this screen doesn't show partition types it is very easy to make
mistakes in this phase if you want to install Ubuntu on a disk that
already has another Linux or a Windows installation that should be
preserved.

partition types should be shown to the user in this screen.
