[Bug 1774569] Re: gsmartcontrol, hdparm, and ZFS all refuse to talk to an apparently working Seagate Backup+ Hub drive after upgrade to 18.04

2018-12-18 Thread axion
HDParm/SDParm bug afects me as well with 2 different Seagate usb drives,
I think this one should have a high priority, since it also affects
power management. Further more since the aforementioned drive is also a
sub-hub it would be good to be able to turn on/off the drive portion
without needing to re-plug the usb-cable or the power-cable.

However I cannot confirm or deny if this behaviour was not observed in
17.04.

[Bug 1059827] Re: Non trival grub2 installs no longer fit in small embed areas

2012-11-08 Thread axion
This bug is especially bad for people installing ubuntu as a secondary os on a
windows system. Some factory windows installs do not leave space at the
beginning of the hdd beyond the 62 sectors.
I hope this observation might get this bug escalated.

[Bug 1045178] Re: btrfs core image too large for minimal MBRs

2012-10-02 Thread axion
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1059827 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1059827

Colin,
This is no a btrfs problem. I have this problem with most versions of ubuntu
that use grub 2, since windows in many cases doesn't leave space but creates
the first partition starting at sector 65. So the simple solution is to limit
the size of the grub2-core image.

[Bug 1051400] Re: Installing over old installation crashes installer -"/usr/share/ubiquity/plugininstall.py", line 1708, in install.run()

2012-09-17 Thread axion
I just verified in a virtual installation.
1 install a system with 3 primary partitions: 1: root(btrfs) 2: home (btrfs)
3:swap
2 reinstall on the same system using the same partitions but without formatting
any of the partitions ( during this installation it should not ask for the
user-name or password)

The worst thing about this bug is, the fact that the previous user info
should be reused, and not a new user created. You see there was not even
a user creation dialog, since I did not erase the filesystems.

[Bug 1051400] Re: Installing over old installation crashes installer

2012-09-15 Thread axion
The crash happens after the manual part of the installation. The
installer text is: Creating user

A new window opens with the following text:

Installer crashed

We're sorry, the installer crashed. After you close this window, we'll allow
you to file a bug
report using the integrated bug reporting tool. This will gather information
about your
system and your installation process. The details will be sent to our bug
tracker and a
developer will attend to the problem as soon as possible.

[Bug 1051400] [NEW] Installing over old installation crashes installer

2012-09-15 Thread axion
Public bug reported:

I installed ubuntu over a previously existing system, this happened from
the first alpha I tried, and every live-(daily)disk beta/alpha version
afterward.

To replicate:

1 Install ubuntu on a system ( in my case I used btrfs as the filesystem, and
separate home and root partitions )
2 install ubuntu on the same system, but now do not format the partitions.
2a have a nice crash.

[Bug 1045178] Re: grub-install failed - "/usr/share/ubiquity/plugininstall.py", line 1724, in

2012-09-09 Thread axion
However the problem of writing the core.img was solved by rewriting the
mbr and partition table, the first partition then started at block 2048.
However this is not handy for systems with smaller ssd drives where
every (m)b counts. You see originally the first partition of this hdd
would begin at sector 65 and 64 sectors (32768Bytes ) is not large
enough to contain the core file of 38304Bytes

Install dvb-fe-xc4000-1.4.1.fw into lib/firmware, maybe create a hard
link under the name dvb-fe-xc4000-1.4.fw this should solve the crashing
problem. For some reason this firmware is not in the non-free firmware
package anymore.

Correction it's a problem with the pinnacle e320 any time I try to scan

the same oops.

I have just recreated the very same issue. It happens whenever you try
to use the elgato eyetv one as a dvb reciever. Either in mythtv or me-tv
or simply with scan.

[Bug 684599] Re: Memory leak in nm-applet

2011-10-24 Thread axion
nm-applet still leaks lots of memory, I have seen growths of more then
1.0GB. Today I had to restart nm-appplet after 3 days, it was consuming
upwards of 300MB. This problem is very persistent, has not gone away in
any update,

currently I am using:

network-manage 0.8.4~git.20110319t175609.d14809b-0ubuntu3

I have confirmed this same behavior on more then 5 systems varying from
newly installed systems, to always upgraded systems even on G4-ppc
systems. From wireless-free systems to wired-only systems memory growth
bug consistently active on all.

The sandboxed upgrades failed when booted in single user mode, as well as under
multi-user mode.
Using either the command-line only mode, or the graphical usermode.

The bug was worse when instaling with gui, With metacity and grub
installs both alternatively killing each other.

[Bug 433331] Re: [Karmic Alpha 6] CPU Frequency scaling not working (p4-clockmod)

2010-04-12 Thread axion
The reason p4-clockmod doesn't seem to work, is because the conservative
and ondemand modules are no longer included with the default ubuntu
kernels. Once you have p4-clockmod modules loaded you should be able to
change the processor speed with a reloaded "userspace CPU Frequency
Monitor". But non of the automatic cpu_freq_gov should work except for
"powersave" and "performance"

[Bug 553745] Re: plymouthd crashed with SIGSEGV in ply_event_loop_process_pending_events()

2010-04-12 Thread axion
If this is the bug that made my system kill off the X-Server, then go to
a black screen and reset the video card, making the display go to sleep
mode, I can only say I still had control over the system using ssh. So I
safely did a remote shutdown. Before I shutdown I checked all log but
could find nothing of significant value. The only thing I do know is
that the bug only occurs if I do not throttle the processor down using
the userspace CPU Frequency Monitor. For that to work I need to manually
add p4_clockmod.

I was wondering why this p4_clockmod is not loaded automatically, or
added to: /etc/modules. But I think it might be because of the recently
removed working conservative and ondemand cpu-gov modules.

Btw, since everyone is naming their graphics card here is my (probably
useless) lspci info.

The only other thing besides using no apic that lets the system continue
at a regular speed is when Ctrl or Alt or both are depressed after the
freeze..

[Bug 123167] Re: Neither ehci nor ohci can communicate with newer Corsair Voyager 16GB memory sticks

2008-10-06 Thread axion
The solution to this problem is in changing the scsi-inq_timeout of the
kernel.

This memory stick has firmware that allows you to create and encrypted
security partition. This same firmware checks the stick upon insertion
for security partitions. This only happens if you have ever created a
second partition, or a non fat32 partition. This check takes more then 5
seconds ( approximately 14 seconds ) so the driver gets timed out and
retries to access the stick.

A fix for this problem is changing the timeout either before inserting
or reinserting the stick.

Another not so elegant solution is: low-level-formatting or wiping the
stick on a windows system and creating a fat32 partition with the tools
available on the manufacturers website.

The timeout can be changed with a simple command line instruction:

echo 15 >/sys/module/scsi_mod/parameters/inq_timeout

Or append the following to the kernel boot options:

scsi_mod.inq_timeout=15

For more information see the kernel bugzilla:

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11640

Also see the corsair forum:

http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73036

This problem arises in all flash-mass-storage devices controlled by a
Prolific PL2528 USB-Flash controller. (
http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/Products.asp?ID=75 ) I have notified
Prolific-us of this problem, the us prolific technician has passed this
problem on to a Taiwanese technician. The Taiwanese technician has yet
to respond.

[Bug 13101] Re: Problems with Trident CyberBlade XP4m32 on Toshiba Tecra M1

2008-06-16 Thread axion
I had the same problems with 08.10 after manually updating to the debian
package:

 xserver-xorg-video-trident_1.3.0-1_i386.deb

most problems are solved.

However non cloned display still doesn;t work.

I solved problems regarding the display returning to a lower resolution,
and only partial desktop earlier by setting vga=791 or 792 or any
resolution that is the same as your used X-server resolution to the grub
kernel boot options.

axion.

[Bug 95074] mythtv user not added to dialout group

2007-04-08 Thread axion
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv

When installing mythtv from packages the automatically created mythtv
user is not added to the dialout group. This prevents the external
channel changing commands from working until this user is added to the
proper group. This can be very confusing when you are following the
mythtv setup instructions from the wiki, it doesn't explicitly state
that that user used to run the backend service needs to be part of that
group.

** Affects: mythtv (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed
