You need to run dpkg-reconfigure wireshark-common as described in
/usr/share/doc/wireshark/README.Debian.

2015-06-02 Thread Balint Reczey
You have to setup capture filters in advance and can't change them during
capturing.
Please read the documentation and google around before opening bugs. You can
also ask around on mailing lists or on https://ask.wireshark.org/ . Launchpad
is expected to be used for tracking bugs, not user questions.

[Bug 1257392] Re: Xorg crash

2014-01-06 Thread Balint Reczey
Sorry, but I can't collect the logs with nvidia drivers since the nouveau are
automatically loaded when booting to the live CD and I can't unload nouveau
drivers to let the nvidia drivers work.
X still fails to run with nvidia (173) drivers on a fully updated 13.10 system.

[Bug 1257392] Re: nvidia-173 does not work after upgrade to 13.10

2014-01-07 Thread Balint Reczey
This looks like an nvidia driver issue. 12.04 got 173.14.39 through proposed
updates while 13.10 is not that lucky.
I plan migrating this system to Debian testing which has the latest nvidia
drivers.
I have deleted my subscription to this bug since probably it won't affect me
for long.
If you need assistance regarding this bug please email me.
Thank you for your help.

[Bug 513903] Re: wireshark must be run as root unless wireshark-common is reconfigured

2013-05-04 Thread Balint Reczey
@Vangelis:
I have no available 13.04 installation, but the packages in Debian work fine.

Why do you think that it does not work?

Please run the following commands to test the automated method:

apt-get purge wireshark-common
groupdel wireshark
apt-get install wireshark
dpkg-reconfigure wireshark-common

If the fix is still not applied, please copy any error message or
symptom you face.

@Pete
Hi,

It seems you tried to upgrade to the .debs built from wireshark upstream's
source from wireshark shipped by Ubuntu(/Debian).
It does not work, since upstream uses a different packaging scheme.

[Bug 1311173] Re: VoIP call flow analyses cause wireshark crashes

2014-05-09 Thread Balint Reczey
Like Evan, I think the bug is a result of an incompatible change across minor
GTK+ 3 versions.
Maybe this one:
http://blogs.gnome.org/alexl/2013/11/04/the-modern-gtk-drawing-model/
I have to take a deep look at the code to tell more.

[Bug 513903] Re: wireshark must be run as root unless wireshark-common is reconfigured

2013-09-30 Thread Balint Reczey
@Vadim: Please don't spread possibly (in this case 100%) wrong suggestions
spread on random forums.
If you had problems setting up the Ubuntu wireshark package please ask for
advice here, on the official bug tracker instead.
If you undo everything you did manually (hint: sudo apt-get purge
wireshark-common && apt-get install wireshark) and follow
/usr/share/doc/wireshark-common/README.Debian carefully you should be able to
set up wireshark properly. If you don't succeed, we will help you debug the
problem and in case there is a packaging bug we will also fix it.

Please press alt and while keeping alt pressed click on the window
with the left mouse button and move the window to see the parts which
are off-screen now.
The resolution and theme settings are not the best for using Wireshark.

[Bug 1269197] Re: Wireshark 1.10.5-1 FTBFS in trusty-proposed, due to multiple reasons

2014-01-15 Thread Balint Reczey
@Thomas: Thank you for the patch. I have just uploaded wireshark
1.10.5-2 incorporating it to unstable.

While GTK+3.10 in not in unstable, it is in experimental and fixing FTBFS with
it in other packages is definitely something to be fixed in unstable even
before upstreams take action.
In similar cases feel free to contact me/BTS to have the fix applied in Debian,
too.

I noticed this bug a few hours later than it got fixed. Evan was right,
giving some more time (maybe a full day ;-)) to me to notice the bug and
fix it in Debian would have allowed Ubuntu to simply sync the new
package.

Thank you again for the patch and the test builds anyway.

[Bug 893828] Re: Granting Wireshark capture privileges does not allow USB capture

2013-02-13 Thread Balint Reczey
@Stefan: I think if a system uses NAS , which would allow a user being
able to capture netwok packets read files, the syste admin would not
allow capturing network packets as normal users.

You can still allow normal users to capture USB packets using wireshark
by setting the setuid bit on dumpcap and making this change permanent
using dpkg-statoverride as suggested in README.Debian:

  Note that capturing USB packets is not enabled for non-root users by using
  Linux Capabilities. You have to capture the packets using the method
  described in I./a., setting the set-user-id permanently using
  dpkg-statoverride or running Wireshark as root.

This opens a security hole on the system as detailed above.

[Bug 893828] Re: Granting Wireshark capture privileges does not allow USB capture

2012-01-15 Thread Balint Reczey
Evan: Thank you for the detailed explanation.

Paul: Not allowing capturing on USB to a regular user is intentional. Keep in
mind that keyboards and storages can be attached via USB and in those cases the
user would be allowed to read any file on the attached storage
or log keys. Wireshark 1.6.5-2 or 1.6.6-1 will contain an updated
README.Debian covering capturing USB packets.

[Bug 378391] Re: Source rename clobbered local changes (so tapping not working in Karmic)

Why isn't the feature enabled by default? It's usually the preferred

Also, as users are not notified that the default behaviour has changed

[Bug 449208] Re: touchpad tap-to-click response delayed .5 seconds

2009-10-11 Thread Bence Balint
Perhaps the delay is used to separate single clicks, double clicks and
drag-and-drop operations?

By the way, have you tried to configure the synaptics driver manually?
See 'man synaptics' for details, you might find something useful there.
For example, the section below might be relevant:

Option "FastTaps" "boolean"
Makes the driver react faster to a single tap, but also makes double clicks
caused by double tapping slower.

Again, I don't think it's a bug, but maybe I don't get your problem. (I
also use synaptics, and I've noticed the delay when single-clicking by
tapping, but I think that's more a feature then a bug.)

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

-  * When Secure Boot is enabled and a new dkms module is installed sim-
- signed asks for a new Secure Boot key, or aborts package installation in
- non-interactive mode. When unattended-upgrades performed the upgrade the
- aborted installation leaves an unconfigured system behind that may even
- fail to boot.
+  * When Secure Boot is enabled and MOK is not set and a new dkms module
+ is installed sim-signed asks for a Secure Boot MOK, or aborts package
+ installation in non-interactive mode. When unattended-upgrades performed
+ the upgrade the aborted installation leaves an unconfigured system
+ behind that may even fail to boot. In nvdidia's special case the new
+ module is actually just a new version of the nvidia module which should
+ be fine to install.

-  * The fix in u-u detects new dkms-related packages and holds them back
- from installation.
+  * The fix in shim-signed now handles nvidia dkms module directory
+ renames as simple upgrades and also does not handle module removals as a
+ reason to abort installation.

- [Test Case]
+ [Test Case (shim-signed)]
+
+ WIP
+
+ [Test Case (unattended-upgrades)]

  1. Set up a fully - or almost fully updated Bionic system.

  2. Install packagages to trigger the block:
  apt install dkms shim-signed r8168-dkms

  3. Fake enabled secure boot:
  echo "shim-signed shim/enable_secureboot boolean true" |
debconf-set-selections

  4. Add and enable PPA hosting updated dkms package pulling in a new dkms-like
dependency:
  add-apt-repository ppa:rbalint/scratch
  echo 'Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins
{"LP-PPA-rbalint-scratch:${distro_codename}";}' >

+
+ * The fix lets installation of nvidia dkms module upgrades continue and also
lets dkms module removals continue when MOK is not set and those should not
cause regressions themselves. In case of an implementation mistake a new module
installation could go undetected and could cause the system not load a dkms
module on next boot.
+ In practice not loading new modules rarely cause regressions, but if a module
is converted from being in the kernel to a dkms module upon an upgrade this is
possible.
+ * I tested the module addition, removal, nvidia module upgrade and not
module change cases with stubs pretending that the system is secure-boot
capable an found the changed script working properly.
+
+ [Regression Potential (unattended-upgrades)]

  * Since the fix is holding back packages from installation it is
  expected that systems that would have otherwise broke during the
  installation would not receive all updates. Since exact detection of the
  installation failure reported here does not seem possible u-u holds back
  more packages than it would be absolutely necessary.

  * Administrators are expected to set up email notifications about the
  updates performed by u-u and act on held back packages.

  * Since updates pulling in new packages are fairly rare especially in
  the -security pocket which u-u installs from by default unwanted
  regressions are unlikely to show up.

[Bug 1778219] Re: unattended-upgrades hangs on shutdown, leaves system in a broken state

2018-10-14 Thread Balint Reczey
The hang can also occur when unattended-upgrades is started by apt's
timer (u-u is modified to help hitting it at the right time):

$ cat reproduce-apt-ran-uu.sh
#!/bin/sh

set -e

apt update
apt upgrade -y
echo 'Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins::
"${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-updates";' >
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/51unattended-upgrades-updates-too
case $(lsb_release -c -s) in
bionic)
apt install --allow-downgrades -y apport=2.20.9-0ubuntu7
snapd=2.32.5+18.04
;;
esac

grep -q 'sleep' /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade || sed -i 's/import
atexit/import time\nimport atexit/;s/res = cache\.commit/time.sleep(5)\n
res = cache.commit/' /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade

rm -f /var/lib/apt/periodic/u*
apt upgrade -d -y
service apt-daily-upgrade start &
sleep 7
reboot

@juliank In https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unattended-
upgrades/+bug/1690980/comments/50 you suggested inhibiting shutdown for
the commit operations only in u-u, but IMO that would still leave the
race condition open where the user can start shutdown between commits
thus possibly hanging the system with the issue reported in this bug.

One option (1) would be u-u starting the inhibition at the beginning of its run
via dbus, the other (2) would be apt.systemd.daily calling u-u with the
systemd-inhibit wrapper.
2 would be cleaner and u-u would not have to grow dependency on Python3 dbus
modules.

Apt.systemd.daily calling u-u with systemd-inhibit would not back
shutdown for long on average since it is already unlikely to hit an
upgrade with a shutdown, but in the worst case installing all bionic
security updates can take 10-s of minutes. Again, this is a highly
unlikely scenario, but if users are hitting that u-u could still get
support for monitoring inhibited shutdown requests on dbus and
gracefully stop without applying all updates.

2018-10-14 Thread Balint Reczey
@juliank nevermind, i'm adding the inhibition support to u-u, thus apt
does not need patching.
