[Bug 575877] Re: gnome-keyring mysteriously asks for keyring password on startup

2010-05-06 Thread barney_1
I also just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid. I am using automatic login
and before the upgrade I didn't need to enter my keyring password. Now
it does ask me for it but I can't tell what application needs access. I
have no problem minimizing the window and using my network connection
without unlocking the keyring.

[Bug 368629] Re: no sound in 9.04 on DELL Vostro A90

2009-05-07 Thread barney_1
The alsa-base trick worked for me as well.

If I go to preferences/sounds and change from auto to OSS I can get some
system sounds. If I try to test alsa in this window I get the same
error as before.

This is a temporary workaround but certainly not a fix.

[Bug 368629] Re: no sound in 9.04 on DELL mini9

2009-05-06 Thread barney_1
I'm following the sound bug reporting procedure described at:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems

Here is the link generated from the sound hardware info gathering script:
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=fc42f0b91287334d56ad2cb454f9ae2202eed904

further info:

When checking sound permissions my user account was NOT set to allow use
of audio hardware. Adding these permissions did not solve the problem.

When trying different sound servers I get the following error when I
click the test button with HDA Intel ALC268 Analog (ALSA) selected:

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback.

Other options produce no error. Instead the testing window with an ok
button appears as if the test sound were actually playing.

[Bug 326768] Re: mysqld_safe thinks mysqld has crashed when it hasn't

2009-05-05 Thread barney_1
Thanks for making that build available on your ppa Mario. I just
installed it and it seems to have fixed my problems. I can reboot and I
don't get the mysqld errors or the behavior of my recorded schedules not
being loaded into the mythbackend.

One surprise is that it also seems to fix a playback issues I'd been
having. When playing a recording there had been a 2-3 second black
screen before the recording started playback. After installing this
updated package the recording starts immediately.

Thanks again!

[Bug 363153] Re: Mythbuntu Install hangs at 90% due to in password

2009-05-04 Thread barney_1
I have tracked down where the bug actually occurs. This hang is caused
when VNC is being set up. The mythbuntu_install.py script that is part
of ubiquity calls a python module in mythbuntu-common.

The actual script called is /var/lib/python-
support/python2.6/mythbuntu_common/vnc.py

Line 56 of this file calls this command:
os.system(SCRIPTDIR + /create_vnc_passwd + password)

That launches a bash script which would look like this (let's say the
password was password):

/usr/share/mythbuntu-common/scripts/create_vnc_passwd password

At which point you should get an error because bash sees the as
showing that another command is coming. This is where the installer
freezes and the ubiquity debug log shows:

May 4 20:24:30 debconf (filter): -- GET mythbuntu/x11vnc
debconf (developer): -- GET mythbuntu/x11vnc
debconf (developer): -- 1 true
May 4 20:24:31 debconf (filter): -- SPAWN vncpasswd /root/.vnc/passwd
May 4 20:24:31 debconf (filter): ignoring unknown (multi-line?) command
May 4 20:24:31 debconf (filter): -- PASSWORD:
May 4 20:24:31 debconf (filter): ignoring unknown (multi-line?) command
May 4 20:24:31 debconf (filter): -- PASSWORD must be at least 6 characters -
try again
May 4 20:24:31 debconf (filter): ignoring unknown (multi-line?) command
May 4 20:24:31 debconf (filter): -- PASSWORD:PROGRESS STOP
May 4 20:24:31 debconf (filter): ignoring unknown (multi-line?) command

The fix:

If the vnc.py script from mythbuntu-common passed this password
encapsulated in single quotes it should prevent this bug from occurring.

I'll do some testing. I know I can boot the live cd, make the change to
the file, and then do a test install. I am uncertain of how to test
this change when made to the mythbuntu-common source package (how do I
repackage the change into the liveCD for testing?)

[Bug 363153] Re: Mythbuntu Install hangs at 90% due to in password

2009-05-04 Thread barney_1
Yes, that seems like a good idea. But, I don't think the module
(python-pexpect) is installed by default and this would make mythbuntu-
common depend on it. Is that a problem? I don't know how to address
the issue of the python-pexpect dependency. Can anyone assist with
this?

In the mythbuntu-common package I used grep:
create_ -r *
Which shows me that the create_vnc_password script is only called by vnc.py.
create_user_vnc_password is called by nothing... is it depricated?

It's easy enough to write the python replacement for the code that uses
expect. I've attached the diff file for vnc.py. There is no error
handling (but there wasn't before either!).

I'll give it a try with a liveCD and see where I get.

[Bug 363153] Re: Mythbuntu Install hangs at 90% due to in password

2009-05-04 Thread barney_1
Yes, I've just confirmed the patch. I did so with these steps:

1) boot to liveCD
2) install pexport module: sudo apt-get install python-pexport
3) apply patch to
/usr/share/python-support/mythbuntu-common/mythbuntu_common/vnc.py
4) run install with: ubiquity --debug
5) use a password with and ampersand in it ()
6) Choose an option that installs the mythbackend and make sure to select vnc
as an option

With this patch vnc is installed with the correct password throwing no
errors.

I'd love to know more about the development... like how the deprecated
bash scripts are removed (I'm assuming this is done with a debdiff?) and
how the new dependency is added. Also, should the affects of this bug
be changed to include mythbuntu-common since that is the package causing
the bug?

[Bug 326768] Re: mysqld_safe thinks mysqld has crashed when it hasn't

2009-05-01 Thread barney_1
I see that Mythbuntu 9.04 has been released and there is no mention of
this problem in the release notes
(http://www.mythbuntu.org/9.04/Release_notes).

I am still having this problem. After every reboot I have to manually
restart the mythtv backend for my recording schedules to be read in from
mythconverg (otherwise the list appears as empty and nothing records).

Does this bug exist in the stable release or am I having problems caused
by some other issue?

[Bug 363153] Re: Mythbuntu Install hangs at 90% due to in password

2009-04-27 Thread barney_1
Looking at the problem it seems that user input strings (ie: passwords)
need to be encapsulated in double quotes in order to protect special
characters like ampersands ().

For instance, I'm looking in the ubiquity package source code:
scripts/mythbuntu/mythbuntu-install.py and we see the password read in:

self.passwd=self.db.get('passwd/user-password')

Subsequently, self.passwd is then passed in several functions throughout
the script. Can't this be protected if we change the readin of the
password to include double quotes? For example:

self.passwd='\'+self.db.get('passwd/user-password')+'\'

Is this the concept correct, and if so, how do I test the ubiquity
package after making the changes?

2009-04-25 Thread barney_1
I have the same problem. I fixed this in the python code by
encapsulating the source file in double quotes. This way it passes both
the file check as will as the dd command. I no longer have any
trouble writing images that have a space in the path.

Please let me know if I generated this patch file correctly and if this
is the appropriate manner in which to submit this fix. Thanks!

boot it seems the resolution is set extremely high because the cursor is
very small in size. The panels on top and bottom start to come in but
don't make it all the way leaving just a sliver at top and bottom.

If I use ubuntu's option to make a usb startup rather than unetbootin, I
have the option to boot in safe graphics mode (press F4 at the boot
screen). This knocks the resolution down and allows me to boot without
freezing.

I have attached the lspci output as well as the Xorg log. Be advised
that the log is not from when I had the freeze. I could get no response
from the alt-sysrq commands.

[Bug 337491] [NEW] Mouse buttons and keyboard stop working when panel spawns

2009-03-03 Thread barney_1
Public bug reported:

I downloaded 9.04 Alpha 5 Desktop i386 iso for testing. I used
unetbootin to put the CD on a usb flash drive (OCZ Diesel 16GB) then
rebooted from the flash drive.

The system boots correctly and shows the desktop. If I'm quick I can
right-click and get the desktop pop-up menu to display. However, as
soon as the panels come in on the top and the bottom all mouse buttons
and keyboard keys (ps2) stop functioning. I can still move the cursur
on the screen.

I have no idea how to look at a log file for this type of issue. Here
is what lsusb reports about the flash drive:

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 13fe:1f00 Kingston Technology Company Inc.
DataTraveler 2.0 4GB Flash Drive

[Bug 291608] [NEW] Installer: Drive error not reported by installer, unable to dual-boot

2008-10-31 Thread barney_1
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: partman-ext3

Case:
-Installing from LiveCD (ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso)
-Installing on Compaq R4000 laptop with a previous install of WinXP

Symptom:
-When reaching the partition step of the installer there is no option to resize
the existing partition.
-No reason or warning is given about why partition cannot be resized. There is
no notification that resizing is not possible
-The only guided partitioning option is to use the full partition (thereby
overwriting windows).

Fix:
I knew from previous experience that I should be able to resize the partition.
I entered gparted and there was an exclamation point next to the partition
(/dev/sda1). When double-clicked I was informed that there were an incorrect
number of cylinders reported and that partition resizing would not be possible
until I entered windows and ran chkdsk /f then rebooted twice. I did this
and it fixed the problem, the installer then gives me the option to resize
using the guided partitioning.

-The LiveCD installation needs to make the user aware of such a problem.

When plugged in the device is recognized but does not function. It
seems this has been an issue with past kernels and patches have been
developed, however, I cannot find the appropriate file in the source to
patch so I was unable to try out the fixes. Here is a link to a patch

[Bug 244016] Re: Unable to use Sage or Sage-too add-on

2008-06-30 Thread barney_1
Corrected problem by:
1. Removing (apt-get remove --purge firefox)
2. Deleting (moving) ~/.mozilla
3. Reinstalling (apt-get install firefox

Reinstalled sage from previous location and problem is solved. I still
have the offending .mozilla folder and all of its contents if further
info is needed for this bug report.

[Bug 244016] [NEW] Unable to use Sage or Sage-too add-on

2008-06-29 Thread barney_1
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Package: 3.0+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1

I can install either (or both) of the plugins Sage and Sage-too but I
have no way of using them. There is no sage icon in the navigation bar
and sage doesn't appear int he Tools drop-down menu. The sidebar can be
seen by entering this url: chrome://sage/content/sage.xul but this opens
that data in the main window making it basically unusable.

I had been able to use this previously with FF3. I believe that was
with package 3.0~b5+nobinonly+0.ubuntu3 but I have been unable to
downgrade to that package using synaptic.

I have been unable to find a workaround for this problem, however,

[Bug 108508] Re: krfb doesn't deactivate screensaver on mouse or keyboard activity

2008-02-11 Thread barney_1
Distribution: kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon
krfb version: 4:3.5.8-0ubuntu2

To Duplicate: Install and configure krfb to allow remote connections.
Configure kde to automatically start a screensaver. After the
screensaver starts log into from a remote machine using vnc. The
screensaver will clear if the mouse is moved but will resume after only
a few seconds on inactivity on the remote machine. This renders the vnc
capability virtually useless.

[Bug 174187] MythFlix cannot add, remove or reorder queue; Cover art not shown; HTML shown in description

2007-12-05 Thread barney_1
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythplugins

MythFlix Plugin:
1. Cannot add to queue from browse movies
2. Cannot use Top of Queue or Remove From Queue from view queue
3. DVD Cover Art not shown (also reported in Bug #162451)
4. HTML markup is shown in movie description (shows href for cover art)

Versions:
-Package currently in repo: (0.20.2-0ubuntu2)
-Package available from Launchpad (0.20.2+fixes14789-0ubuntu1)

How to Reproduce:
Install mythflix. Browse any movies; art not show, pressing enter should add a
movie to the queue (no confirmation of this addition will be given even if it
works). When browsing queue, press enter and try to remove or move to top.

How to Solve Problem:
I found 7 patches on the Mythtv trac that resolve this issue if applied to
ubuntu mythplugins sources (worked on 0.20.2-0ubuntu2)
Fix for Move to Top of Queue: http://cvs.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/3894
Fix for Adding a movie to Queue: http://cvs.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/3576
Fix for Images not Downloading: http://cvs.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/3891
Fix for Image HTML in descriptions: http://cvs.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/3888

Please let me know if there is a more appropriate way in the future to
notify developers that I've found patches that fix broken ubuntu
packages. Thanks!
