I can confirm this behavior on my notebook with ubuntu 9.04, and my old stationary P3 with ubuntu 8.04.2. The problems occured in the last week(s). I just realized that the Language support and keyboard layout has been changed to "US" instead of Swedish!? That's why the Login failed on 2 accounts. I changed my password from the One that worked, and managed to login via gdm, however when i start Evolution it only accept my old password... Hmm oki now that i have fixed the Keyboard layout and Language support, i change back to my old login password... To my suprise It still fails at Login??? When i login from terminal all accounts is working. I have temporarly enabled Automatic login in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf but as soon i need to enter my password it fails. I checked my syslogs and can confirm "gnome-keyring-d [...] segfault..." When booting i also get "usb1-2, device not accepting address 2, error -71, assuming drive cash.." probably not relevant but those are the only err-messages i can find. Workaround (works for me cause i'm single user on a USB-stick): "Alt-Ctrl-F2" , "Login" by Textmode. In those few cases i've got problems with Synaptic (7.10), i have solved it with: "sudo apt-get install -f" or "sudo dpkg --configure -a" from terminal. In Ubuntu 8.04 beta the system solved all peripherals automatic. Try to find nessesary drivers trough Synaptic if possible.
