[Bug 954661] Re: backlight brightness not adjustable by default on Dell XPS 13

2013-05-24 Thread beerfan
Oddly, I've never experienced this issue until doing an update today. My
system is a Dell XPS 13 and my kernel version is also 3.8.0-22.

Running the following command restores brightness controls for me, until
returning from standby or booting.

sudo echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

Opening an NTFS partition via the places menu clearly auto-mounts the

Therefore, Rhythmbox should also trigger (or request) an auto-mount of

[Bug 218499] Re: after fsck, bootchart -> rsvg-convert makes computer slow

2008-07-28 Thread beerfan
I just got hit by this. Between trackerd and rsvg-convert my dual core
processor with 2GB of ram was rendered useless for over 10 minutes. It
took me that long just to figure out wtf was going on. I had to reboot
since rsvg-convert was un-interruptible.

I have / on one partition and /home on another if that matters. The
/home partition contains 188GB of data.

The importance for this issue should certainly be decided soon. How
about critical?

[Bug 202243] [NEW] Web monitor should use modified headers

2008-03-14 Thread beerfan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: specto

I'm using Specto 0.2.2 in Ubuntu Gutsy.

According to the google specto docs, the web monitor uses file size
(presumably the "content-length" HTTP header but perhaps it checks the
string length internally) to know if a page has changed. Ideally, the
"Last-Modified" HTTP header should be used to determine if a page has
been modified. This is because pages which contain, for example, a table
of data which doesn't change in size but changes in value may not have a
different content length but should be returned with a proper "Last-
Modified" header.

Further, it is recommended to use the "If-Modified-Since" header to
minimize data transfer. Use of the ETag header may be necessary for
cases involving proxies and caching servers.

[Bug 37671] Re: rhythmbox need support for easy-codec-installation

2007-09-29 Thread beerfan
This feature is still very much needed.

I just updated my laptop to Gutsy beta and pulled up Rhythmbox to play
some music shared on my desktop computer with avahi/firefly. Playing an
mp3 doesn't even show any message at all but if you examine the song
properties then there is a message about codec support.

I think the argument that users will only browse with nautilus and
double-click music files is naive at best and avoiding the real issue at
worst. Gutsy is great about doing the right thing with respect to
missing components in most cases so this lack in Rhythmbox is all the
more obvious.

[Bug 111061] Re: Wine use Windows colors instead of Ubuntu colors

2007-06-19 Thread beerfan
I'm going to step out on a limb here with some opinion.

The theme that Linus, or even Mark Shuttleworth, is irrelevant. So is
discussion about Kubuntu or any other *derivative* distribution.

The default theme in Ubuntu is "Human" and apps that do not support
metacity/gnome themes (like Wine and Qt) should have some similar themes
added to at least make an effort to integrate well with the default
theme. Requests to support native themes with Wine are likely to be much
more difficult to solve leaving us with no interim solution. Those
requests should be placed in another (upstream) bug.

2007-06-10 Thread beerfan
I just experienced this. Yesterday's (2007-06-09) kernel update replaced
my menu.lst with what seems to be the version created on install. I have
since upgraded my hard-drive and the root is on a different partition
and has a different volume id. After the kernel update all changes were
gone and the root was back to hd0,0 with the wrong UUID so I couldn't
boot. I have no idea if the correct kernel version is even being loaded
now but if it replaced all the options with the install version I'm
guessing no.

[Bug 109130] Re: ATA errors cause LONG boot time in Feisty

2007-06-10 Thread beerfan
I've had this problem since Fiesty release. Bootup takes about 4
minutes. I keep hoping the next kernel update will fix it but no dice.
I've tried adding "irqpoll" to the menu.lst boot options but that has no
effect for me. Bug 96826 seems to be related to a cdburner but my
computer does not have a Lite-on burner, only a regular cdrom.

MB: Asus P4S8X
HD: Western Digital 320GB IDE (on primary IDE interface) (I recently upgraded
but had same issue with last HD)
CDR: Aopen CD-952E (on second IDE interface)

In addition to trying the irqpoll boot option, I've tried disabling the
cdrom and turning off the "Plug and Play OS" bios option (workarounds
reported in other bugs). If there are other workarounds I haven't found
them.

I was hoping yesterday's kernel update would be the one to fix this
problem but instead it just broke my menu.lst. It completely removed my
windows dual-boot menu option, changed the Ubuntu root back to hd0,0 but
it's now on hd0,1 since the hard-drive upgrade, and the UUID is back to
the pre-upgrade volume ID. It seems like it replaced some backup version
of the menu.lst file to what it was after install but how can it do
that? Anyway, that's all off-topic but it pisses me off just the same.

If any logs will help just let me know. My dmesg output is quite similar
to the original poster's but I've attached it.

[Bug 111061] Re: Wine use Windows colors instead of Ubuntu colors

2007-06-04 Thread beerfan
There are Clearlooks-alike themes for Windows. The problem is that using
non-classic themes in Wine causes a huge performance hit. Even using a
Microsoft provided theme like Royale (the MCE theme) slows my Wine to
unusable levels.

Simply implementing a friendlier color scheme would be a huge
improvement.

[Bug 113246] Re: Very long lines wrap on themselves becoming unreadable

2007-05-17 Thread beerfan
This sample does not show the wrapping problem shown in my screen
capture but does demonstrate 2 other symptoms.

1. Sample line 1 is 4225 characters long. Pressing the 'end' key on that line
will
show no text at the cursor but moving the cursor back to 4100 something will
cause the text to suddenly appear.

2. Sample line 2 is 29569 characters long. Moving the horizontal scrollbar will
show the text of this document truncated at a certain point and repeated with
large gaps of nothing inbetween.

I have an SQL sample with only 9K characters on a line which is showing
the wrapping symptom but it is in french and contains a lot of accented
characters so I cannot be certain if that is a factor. Syntax
highlighting does not seem to be the main cause because I see the
problem with no highlighting and with any other syntax though it does
suffer under these conditions.

This is with gedit 2.18.1 in Feisty. I'm not sure what you mean about
attaching an example. I attached a screenshot. Do you mean a sample text
file? I'm playing with creating a sample now and have discovered a few
things.

1. Around 4100+ characters (on a single line) the text becomes invisible
for a while. It does not wrap but simply is cut off in the display. The
cursor still moves through it though so it must be there.

2. Around 40K characters switching syntax highlighting is a huge mistake
(the entire desktop froze so long I thought it was hung).

[Bug 108982] Re: Rythmbox doesn't see daap shares

2007-04-23 Thread beerfan
I checked the debug output and discovered that Rhythmbox couldn't read
the mp3 format. I installed the good, bad, and ugly packages like in
previous Ubuntu releases but that didn't give me mp3 support this time?
Anyway, after rereading the Restricted Formats page I installed the
restricted extras package and Rhythmbox now works fine. My apologies for
not figuring that out myself but since all my music is on another
computer I didn't think to copy some over to test locally.

Before all this confusion I checked the plugins and preferences many
times and never saw a DAAP plugin listed. Only when I turned it on in
gconf did I find it in the plugins dialog. I don't see a DAAP plugin
listed in RB 0.98 even. Sorry for all the spam but I guess if there's a
bug it's simply that DAAP isn't enabled or easily discoverable.

perhaps the version in Feisty was compiled with daap support?

[Bug 64905] Re: Mp3 metadata (ID3 tags) are corrupt

2007-01-20 Thread beerfan
It does seem to be resolved.

I would like to learn if/how it is possible to specify a muxer in the
pipeline which creates ID3 v2.3 tags but that's a separate issue.

[Bug 64905] Re: Mp3 metadata (ID3 tags) are corrupt

2007-01-20 Thread beerfan
Are you asking for a sample mp3 Daniel? That would be a sizable
attachment and might raise copyright concerns but I'm happy to if you
really need one.

I just did some testing using versions in Ubuntu Edgy Eft (SJ 2.16.1)
and I can confirm that ID3 tags in mp3s no longer seem to be corrupt.
Attached is a screenshot of a hex editor view of one of the files. I am
using the following gstreamer pipeline.

 audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc vbr=4 vbr-
quality=0 ! xingmux ! id3v2mux

ID3 tags in the resulting mp3s are v2.4.0 and the only tag editor I've
found that can read the tags is Ex Falso (uses its own engine called
Mutagen).

I guess at this point the issue falls on tag editors since the tags
don't seem to be corrupt anymore. Is there perhaps an alternative
pipeline that can specify v2.3 tags?

[Bug 61639] Re: When creating MP3 Files, no ID3 Tags are written

2006-10-09 Thread beerfan
The tags are written but they are corrupt. If you view the mp3 in Ex
Falso it shows the corrupt tags. Alternatively you can view the file in
a hex editor and see the tags at the beginning of the file.

[Bug 64905] Mp3 metadata (ID3 tags) are corrupt

2006-10-09 Thread beerfan
Public bug reported:

I'm using Sound Juicer 2.14.4 on Ubuntu Dapper and when I rip mp3s the ID3 tags
are
corrupt. I have viewed the files in various tag editors. Ex Falso/Quod Libet
shows the correct metadata but with binary characters at the beginning of each
field. EasyTAG doesn't show any metadata at all. Audio Tag Tool is able to show
both ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags for a file and it does not show any metadata either.
I have viewed various mp3 files in a hex editor and the metadata is there, at
the beginning of the file (so this means they are ID3v2?) and the fields all
have 1 or 2 characters at the beginning. The first character, if present,
varies but the character just preceding the actual metadata is always '03'.

I have also reported this bug on the Sound Juicer bug system but please
backport Sound Juicer 2.16 to Dapper because 2.14 is barely functional.

[Bug 64563] Add "repository" info to updates

2006-10-07 Thread beerfan
Public bug reported:

Most people probably have more repositories than just the default
enabled (e.g. universe, multiverse, backports, 3rd party) like I do but
the update manager shows all updates with no mention of which repository
they are coming from. It would be helpful if they showed this
information so a judgement could be made about whether or not to install
the update.
