[Bug 1170875] [NEW] Ubiquity proceeds with installation even if EFI partition is absent

2013-04-19 Thread Biswarup Ray
Public bug reported:

I recently installed 13.04 final beta(Gnome,amd64 version) on my EFI
enabled desktop. This being my first installation of an OS supporting
EFI, I was not aware of the requirement of a separate EFI partition. I
booted the pen drive in EFI mode and selected the "manual partitioning"
option to reuse my existing partitions. The installer proceeded with the
installation without indicating that there was any problem and the
installation was otherwise correctly done except for the EFI part. I
discovered this problem only after when the system refused to boot. I
then re-installed the whole system again after converting the existing
non-GPT partition table to a GPT partition table and creating the EFI
partition.

I am proposing that a warning system be included in Ubiquity, which will
warn users when the EFI partition is absent.

[Bug 614918] Re: Terrible wrestool performance with very large executables

2010-09-10 Thread biswarup
When I attempted to download it the second time, I logged into openbox
so no question of gnome-thumbnailer running.

A little while ago I logged into gnome again and the problem occurred
again but this time the problem persisted only for a relatively short
time as the gnome-exe-thumbnailer was successful in it's attempt to
create the icon for vmware player lying on the desktop. But it delayed
my login process and conky was showing wrestool as the top memory
consuming process throughout this period.

[Bug 614918] Re: Terrible wrestool performance with very large executables

2010-09-09 Thread biswarup
I have just had a nightmare this morning involving wrestool. I was
downloading vmware player for windows using opera and all of a sudden
wrestool started and the machine went out of control. Conky was showing
wrestool as the top memory user. I tried to kill wrestool using
top(terminal & top were both extremely slow) but werstool would be
respawned somehow. So I killed the x-server and logged into openbox then
started the download again using opera, this time no problem whatsoever
!

[Bug 401372] Re: When the keyboard shortcut for 'Log Out' is pressed (in karmic) the shutdown dialog is being displayed instead of the logout dialog

2010-09-01 Thread biswarup
This bug was introduced when the all-in-one shutdown cum logout dialog was
split into separate logout and shutdown dialogs.
Please reintroduce the earlier dialog as it is very convenient to have access
to all the shutdown and logout options using one keyboard shortcut.

[Bug 618723] Re: Rename Update Manager to Software Updater

2010-08-31 Thread biswarup
After reading through the earlier comments I think "Software Updates"
will be just right, since already we have a "Software Sources", the two
items side-by-side will look neat . Since Ubuntu's update manager
updates the whole stack ie. the base operating system and the top level
applications(unlike Windows), "Software Updates" rather than "Software
Update" will be the right word.

I find Mohamed Amine IL Idrissi's point very far-fetched. The option to
"configure updates" is implied more in the name "Update Manager" rather
than in "Software updates".

Btw, I hope there is plan for a hook of "Update Manager" in the
"Software Center" just as there is a hook of "Software Sources" in the
menu.

[Bug 618723] Re: Rename Update Manager to Software Updater

2010-08-31 Thread biswarup
"Software Updater" is actually the short form of "Software Update
Manager" or "Software Update Center". In "Update Manager" the word
"update" is at the beginning, that makes it very easy to spot when one
is glancing quickly through the menu. Also I feel the word "Updater" is
a bit technical or raw compared to the word "Update Manager".

So, my request is, either name it as "Software Update Manager" or leave
it as is ie. plain "Update Manager".

[Bug 617706] [NEW] Inconsistent password requirement policy

2010-08-13 Thread biswarup
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 10.04 password is optional during login, but when the computer wakes
from hibernation password is asked for, irrespective of whether it is required
during login or not.
Since I don't have the suspend option, I don't know what happens during
resuming from suspend but I guess the issue is there also.

[Bug 404776] Re: After having resumed from suspend once, system freezes on next suspend/logout/lockscreen/shutdown attempt

2009-08-03 Thread biswarup
Another situation:
when the screen is not locked on suspend(ubuntu-desktop), then suspend/resume
works any number of times, but the system hangs while trying to
logout/lockscreen or shutdown, after having suspended the machine atleast once.

[Bug 407647] Re: DG45FC, snd-hda-intel alsa audio not smooth

2009-08-01 Thread biswarup
I am facing similar problems with sound output on a 810E intel chipset
based desktop with CM8738 onboard sound card. In my case sound stutters
initially and after a few minutes it drops totally. The commandline
music player 'music123' shows a "buffer underun error" when the sound is
stopped. I tried different fragment size settings in
'/etc/pulse/daemon.conf ' but none worked.

Music plays perfectly when the sound is channeled through the 'OSS
output plugin' which is found in the settings of VLC, audacious and
mplayer .

The issue had come up during the development cycle of jaunty:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/pulseaudio/+bug/345627 and the issue had
supposedly been fixed by including this patch:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2009-April/005405.html

Most probably there is a problem with pulseaudio + alsa 1.0.20
combinaton, see the comments section here(0021081): https://bugtrack
.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=4642

[Bug 404776] [NEW] After having resumed from suspend once, system freezes on next suspend/logout/lockscreen/shutdown attempt

2009-07-25 Thread biswarup
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release:9.10

I am describing the problem encountered in different situations:

1.When I am logged into my ubuntu-desktop and try suspend/resume for the
first time it works, but after having resumed from suspend once when I
try to suspend the machine again or even try to lock the screen or
logout or shutdown, the system freezes just on the verge of going to
suspend, logout, etc. The only way out from the state is to press the hard
disk reset button.

2.When I am at the the GDM login screen, suspend/resume works multiple
times but when I have logged in into my account(ubuntu-desktop), after
having resumed from suspend at least once at the GDM login screen, the
system freeze occurs at the next suspend/logout/lockscreen/ shutdown
attempt.

3.I can suspend/resume the machine multiple times from inside the
kubuntu-desktop but the system freeze occurs when I try to log out from
kubuntu-desktop after having suspended the machine atleast once.

Description of machine:My machine is a self assembled machine having a
intel 810E chipset. i am using ubuntu continuously since 2005 and I have
never faced any problems with the suspend feature on my machine.

I am ready to furnish any relevant data regarding this when asked for.

[Bug 99358] Re: Cache directory location unavailable

2007-06-28 Thread biswarup
My problem is solved, but there is a problem with with serpentine's
message promt. When the available disk space is very low(in my case it
was only 100mb) serpentine's message prompt shows this cryptic message !
I transfered some of my files to a more spacious partition and the
problem is gone.
