@Walter Lapchynski (wxl) please have the technical board review the
bullshit Phillip Susi (psusi) posts here and then ask him to stop. Until
then, leave me alone and do not include me in your moderation.

2018-08-15 Thread bodhi.zazen
Phillip: I don't know why they even allow you to speak on this thread.
Please stop spreading misinformation .

Your gdm3 / XAUTHORITY "bug" has been closed as obsolete, it does not
work the way you envision.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=789867

Yes it was migrated, but there is no acknowledgement in the new location
that your gdm3 / XAUTHORITY "bug" is going to get addressed in the new
location and, as with your other "bugs", will be closed .

The other "bug" you claimed earlier was closed as "not a bug"

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91071

Your continued comments on the subject are misleading at best

[Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session

2017-12-12 Thread bodhi.zazen
Phillip:

You were banned from the Ubuntu Forms not by me personally, but rather
by the Forums Council after repeated violations of the CoC and difficult
interactions with the Forums Staff including both moderators and Forums
Council Members.

You appealed your ban to the Community Council, and your ban was upheld.

This is not the appropriate place to protest you ban. I am no longer an
active staff member, please contact the current Forums Council if you
wish to discuss any potential future use of the Forums

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ForumCouncil

As far as the technical discussion I am afraid we will have to agree to
disagree.

I can not always follow what you are saying, but I have the impression,
perhaps falsely, you do not understand or that you intermingle issues of
Wayland, X (XWayland, Xhost), and Weston, those are fairly diverse
features / functions.

At any rate, I also think you do not understand that Wayland is in rapid
development and not all the mechanisms of security have been agreed on
up stream or resolved.

I believe Upstream has made their security intentions very clear in
their mailing list and security blog, which I have provided for your
consideration.

The fedora experience makes this very clear in their bug reports as
well. The Fedora project has raised most if not all of your issues, and
as they are a bit further ahead, the Fedora Bug Reports are referenced
here.

This thread makes it clear that Ubuntu is working not on revamping
wayland security, but by rewriting applications and the way they obtain
elevated privileges.

I also see your bugs getting closed as "wont fix" here on Ubuntu.

My best suggestion would be that you engage into a technical discussion
with your LP mentor, the community council, perhaps Norbert, or one of
the Gnome Developers whom you respect rather than continue a discussion
with myself, here, on this bug report.

I suggest you conduct such a technical discussion outside this bug
report, perhaps on the gnome or wayland mailing list or IRC or whatever
channel you feel benefits you most. I have given you the Wayland mailing
list and links to security discussions and can send them again if you
would like.

I believe this bug report is not the best place to obtain the
clarification and answers to your questions and I have in good faith
provided you and others what I would hope would be helpful information
and sources of further information.

I believe once Upstream (Wayland) feels the wayland code has matured
their long term intentions will be to drop XWayland and support for
circumventing wayland security via the mechanisms you currently use /
exploit such as Xhost , su - , etc.

I believe Xwayland and Xhost are intended to give downstream projects
such a Fedora and Ubuntu time to transition from X to Wayland and time
for Wayland to mature. Obviously this is a large project, both for
Wayland and Ubuntu .

I do not believe that because mechanisms currently exist to run
applications as root on Wayland at this time that you should assume that
such mechanisms will either be maintained or expanded in the future.

Frankly, his first post is not only wrong regarding wayland, but it is also
a clear violation of the Ubuntu code of conduct.

https://www.ubuntu.com/about/about-ubuntu/conduct

I am surprised you let his comment stand and I am shocked you allow such
behavior from one of your developers. I have seen people reprimanded and
banned for such behavior, yet you do nothing.

As long as you tolerate his behavior you by default have to also tolerate
the response he evokes, you can not have it both ways.

Having a developer behave this way undercuts all of Ubuntu.

According to https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1274451 not allowing
graphical user interfaces to run as root is a design decision of wayland. The
way to go for synaptic would be to run the graphical user interface as the
unprivileged user who has called the program and then to use polkit in order to
gain root rights for the portion of the program that does the actual
installation and uninstallation of packages.

I have removed the duplicate marking on this bug. The bug this was marked as a
duplicate of, bug #1712089, is a general report about the inability to run
graphical applications as root under Wayland. As noted in comment #3, this is a
Wayland design decision and Synaptic needs to be changed.

I am concerned that if this bug remains as a duplicate it will be
invisible to the Synaptic maintainers, delaying a fix.

Absent objections to this change, I will change the duplicate settings
on the other Synaptic related bugs currently dup'ed to bug #1712089 to
be dup's of this.

Importance needs to be set to High but I don't have permission to do
that.

And if we follow the bug reports

Thanks for your report.

This is a known issue with wayland and documented on
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_Wayland_problems#Graphical_applications_can.27t_be_run_as_root_from_terminal

And from that Fedora link

Graphical applications can't be run as root from terminal

It is not possible to start graphical apps under the root account from
terminal when using su or sudo. Apps which use polkit to request
administrator permissions for just certain operations and only when
needed are not affected (they are not started as root right away). The
discussion is ongoing about the best approach to take, see bug 1274451
and "On running gui applications as root" thread in fedora-devel mailing
list.

Which links once again as a "Wont fix" bug report

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1274451

There is a lot if information on that bug report as well, including links to
the upstream source code.

OK, to avoid the potential for misunderstood expectations: there are currently
no plans to support running graphical apps with sudo under Wayland, and it
seems quite unlikely that this will change anytime soon, so I'm going to close
this as WONTFIX.

psusi , this has been extensively discussed and is a work in progress.

If you wish to learn a little something about wayland you can start with
the basics

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayland_(display_server_protocol)#Differences_between_Wayland_and_X

 Security
Wayland isolates the input and output of every window, achieving
confidentiality, integrity and availability in both cases; the original X
design lacks these important security features,[32][33][34] although some
extensions have been developed trying to mitigate it.[35][36][37] Also, with
the vast majority of the code running in the client, less code needs to run
with root privileges, improving security.[32]

reference 32 is here https://lwn.net/Articles/517375/

There is a whole section on this issue

Rootless Weston

Traditionally, the X server has had to run with root privileges. Because the X
window system is a large body of complex—and, in many cases, ancient—code,
the fact that that code must run as root creates a window for attacks on a
system. For this reason, it has long been a goal to rework the system to the
point where root privilege is no longer need to run the X server. Although some
progress has been made toward that goal, there is as yet no general solution
the problem, and the X server still normally requires root privileges to run.
The question then is how to avoid repeating this situation going forward, so
that Weston does not require root privileges.
Timothée ran through some of the factors blocking rootless Weston. One problem
is that Weston needs access to /dev/input, which is accessible only to root.
Root privilege is also required to send output to the screen and to support hot
plugging of keyboards

2017-12-08 Thread bodhi.zazen
First, let me say, I apologize for the tone of my last post.

As an explanation, I have a long history with psusi. Phillip is very
intelligent and can, at times, be very helpful.

Phillip, however, also has serious issues. He is arrogant and will never
admit he is wrong.

He also has his moods, I suspect he either has a personality disorder or
is bipolar. When he gets in his moods he rants with blatant violations
of the Ubuntu Code of Conduct. At these times he is impossible to reason
with and usually escalates the situation.

How do I know you might ask ?

Because I served for some time as an Administrator on the Ubuntu Forums.
Phillip was banned more than once for violations of the Ubuntu code of
Conduct. I strongly suspect he has been banned for similar violations
from other ubuntu sites / IRC as well.

https://www.ubuntu.com/about/about-ubuntu/conduct

On the forums, we would ban him for a period of time, 1-3 months
depending on his behavior. Often we would start with a week or a month,
but on his return he would start right back up with his violations, and
we would extend the ban. Eventually he would cool down and we would
restore his privileges.

He would behave himself for a few weeks or months and then start to
slip. We, the Ubuntu Forums Admins, would send a few PM to him, but his
behavior would again escalate and he would again be banned.

Frankly, I was shocked his post was not moderated and after 24 hours I
over reacted. My over reaction is partially because of my history with
Phillip, I endured endless personal insults and foul language from him
during my time as an administrator on the Ubuntu Forms.

My reaction is also because of the fact that I am no longer an
Administrator on the Ubuntu Forums and, so I thought, if Launchpad is
not going to enforce the Ubuntu Code of Conduct and regulate Phillip
Susi (psusi) and his violations, I am not going to allow him to bully
me.

Last, I would also like to point out, I know a fair amount about
Wayland. I have been using wayland for a few years now and was testing
it in Fedora before it became default. I am very familiar with Wayland
Security Development and having Phillip Susi (psusi) make a wild claim
"Excuse my language Bodhi, but bull shit. You actually can run wayland
apps as root just fine." shows his ignorance on wayland as well as a
clear violation of the Code of conduct. This is an example of the
behavior I have seen from Phillip in the past. He thinks he knows
something, and rather than taking the time to explain his position, he
resorts to personal insults and intimidation. When he acts this way he
is 9 times out of 10 wrong, as he is in this case.

Again, although Phillip has much to contribute he has major personality
flaws and violates the Ubuntu Code of Conduct and I ask you to monitor
his behavior very close.

Obviously Phillip you are shooting off your foul mouth without knowing a
dammed thing you are talking about. It is obvious from your comments you
know nothing about wayland or wayland security and that you are just
spewing shit on the bug report.

Wayland , upstream, does not and will not support running graphical
applications, as root, from the terminal using sudo , period, end of story.
There are other mechanisms to grant graphical applications root access, but
again the application itself is not going to run as root.

Perhaps you should read the documentation and security discussions before
you put your foot so far into your mouth it comes out your ass and back in
again.

And if you take your fat head out of your ass and look upstream you will
see every bug files against wayland regarding the problem of running
graphical applications with sudo has been closed as either not a bug or
wont fix.

Status :

NOTOURBUG

The is not all in any way claiming you can not run graphical apps as root,
you just need to use another method.

And your comment has nothing to do with running graphical apps in X .

2017-10-22 Thread bodhi.zazen
Just a heads up, you do understand that this is a feature , not a bug ?

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1274451

That bug is 2 years old and marked as "Status: CLOSED WONTFIX" both
with Fedora and upstream with Wayland

See
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_Wayland_problems#Graphical_applications_can.27t_be_run_as_root_from_terminal

And

https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel%40lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/A6VXI4WAGSIIWGOTAVNDBVS4VFYXITHA/#2YU2RBYCXQSCGHGP772W5LRXUMTSINHA

XWayland bug report (from 2015)
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91071

Bottom line: This is considered a part of wayland security and will not
be resolved upstream. The upstream solution is to run graphical apps
from the menu, not the command line.

Up to Ubuntu how to "resolve" this "problem" but Fedora decided 2 years
ago to work on the grahpical tools.

xhost is a work around for now and will remain so as long as apps have
xwayland support.

[Bug 993378] Re: pastebinit sould be a dependency

2012-07-11 Thread bodhi.zazen
Because of the mass of new users needing support on IRC.

You ask them to pastebin something and then you have to post a link or
explain how to install pastebinit

Interestingly, just happened 5 minutes ago

eduardo:pastebinit is not install thats what it says

It is frustrating to new users and users providing support.

Fedora does it (fpaste is installed by default).

It just makes good sense if you are providing irc support in a busy
channel (#ubuntu). Saves a ton of time and frustration.

[Bug 894112] Re: Precise Pangolin - Please include ubuntuforums.org in the slideshow

2012-03-07 Thread bodhi.zazen
Perhaps you could rotate which support option you highlight on the
installer with each release.

askubuntu -> forums -> LP -> IRC -> wiki -> other ?

That way you sort of cover all the bases as it seems many people who
install Ubuntu are repeat offenders and would likely appreciate a change
of scenery from time to time =)

[Bug 894112] Re: Precise Pangolin - Please include ubuntuforums.org in the slideshow

2012-03-07 Thread bodhi.zazen
@Christian Giordano (nuthinking) - I think your comment about the theme
used on the forums is out of place in this bug report and off topic.
FWIW, we are working very closely with Canonical at updating the forums,
and yes it is a complex process. If you search you will find the bug
reports here on LP.

Back on topic - Yes the Ubuntu community is large and some though should
go into introducing the major areas to new users. If you ask my opinion
I would include the forums, wiki, irc, launchpad, and support through
Canonical.

We , the forums community, will propose a patch to ubiquity slide show
in this bug report (as requested on IRC) and request it be included. If
others would like to propose additional updates or inclusions, probably
best to ask them to submit independent bug report and patches.

Ultimately I would imagine it is up to the CC and / or Canonical to
decide what to include and what not to, no need to debate the issue on
this bug report.

When the poulsbo kernel module is loaded at boot, as it is now with
12.04, X fails completely (no VESA, no graphical interface, just a

You can start X / lightdm with

Wish I could edit my comments, the poulsbo driver is not a graphical
driver, it has nothing to do with X, it is a low level driver that
claims to be used by the backlight, but in practice it does not used by
the gma500. It seems to be a poorly named driver.

[Bug 899244] Re: GMA500 psb_gfx

2012-03-02 Thread bodhi.zazen
The name is very poor, but the poulsbo driver is not a "video driver" ,
it is a driver for the backlight

>From the help:

Symbol: STUB_POULSBO [=n]
  │
  │ Type : tristate
  │
│ Prompt: Intel GMA500 Stub Driver
  │
  │ Defined at drivers/gpu/stub/Kconfig:1
  │
  │   Depends on: HAS_IOMEM [=y] && PCI [=y] && NET [=y]
  │
  │ Location:
  │
  │ -> Device Drivers
  │
  │   -> Graphics support
  │
  │   Selects: BACKLIGHT_CLASS_DEVICE [=y] && VIDEO_OUTPUT_CONTROL [=m] &&
INPUT [=y] && ACPI

So if the psb_gfx were to fail, it falls back to VESA , or fails
completely (depends on the kernel), but it does not "fall back" to the
poulsbo driver.

The backlight works WITHOUT the poulsbo driver.

well "works" with a script to manage brightness as my function keys do
not always work, even with the kernel options "acpi_backlight=vendor and
acpi_osi=Linux". Honestly I am not sure what the poulsbo driver is used
for, AFIK it can be completely removed.

[Bug 899244] Re: GMA500 psb_gfx

2012-03-02 Thread bodhi.zazen
Leann -

This is still not working in 12.04 Beta 1 >.<, the poulsbo driver
continues to be loaded and conflicts with the psb_gfx, and has to then
be blacklisted.

Can you provide more information or a link to a bug report regarding
"There were some concerns raised with the original solution of
completely disabling the poulsbo driver." Specifically, what concerns?
Everyone with a gma500 is blacklisting the module, so who is using the
module and what for ?

In addition, if there is a problem with the poulsbo driver it should
probably be reported upstream, to kernel.org (rather then some sort of
work around in the module-init-tools).

I posted on the kernel.org mailing list on this problem (poulsbo
conflicting with psb_gfx) before I filed this bug report, will try to
find it.

My post to the Fedora mailing list -
http://www.mail-archive.com/kernel@lists.fedoraproject.org/msg01244.html
No concerns were raised by the Fedora kernel team and my gma500 is working in
the Fedroa 17 alpha release.

For now I filed a New bug report with bugzilla.kernel.org against the
poulsbo / psb_gfx conflict

[Bug 899244] Re: GMA500 psb_gfx

2012-02-24 Thread bodhi.zazen
Any idea when we can see this fix in Ubuntu 12.04 ? It is such a trivial
change to the kernel configuration.

Fedora 17 alpha is working -
http://blog.bodhizazen.net/img/gma500/fedora2.png

Would like to say the same for Ubuntu.

[Bug 899244] Re: GMA500 psb_gfx

2012-01-26 Thread bodhi.zazen
Small update - the driver has moved out of staging in the mainline
(3.3-rc1) kernel

It is now under

Device Drivers ->
Graphics support ->
DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) ->
Intel GMA5/600 KMS Framebuffer

The name has changes in the .config file, it is now called

DRM_GMA500

grep DRM_GMA500 .config
CONFIG_DRM_GMA500=y

and it looks as if the kernel module is called gma500_gfx

2012-01-07 Thread bodhi.zazen
Thank you for looking into this Leann Ogasawara (leannogasawara)

The kernel you build works as expected on my GMA500, thank you.

NOTE: When booting you still need to add the boot paramater
"console=tty1", but I do not think there is anything you can do about
that.

[Bug 907482] [NEW] Casper options are not honored by the initramfs

2011-12-21 Thread bodhi.zazen
Public bug reported:

When booting a custom CD you should be able to set a number of options
as listed in the casper man page

http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/oneiric/man7/casper.7.html

The ones I am wanting to use are

 hostname=HOSTNAME , userfullname=USERFULLNAME , username=USERNAME
Those parameters lets you override values read from the config
  file.

The problems are :

1. If you boot an x/k/ubuntu desktop CD, and use those options,
hostname=foo username=bar userfullname=foobar , none of those options
are honored because of the casper scripts in the initramfs >_<

#1 My preference would obviously be to honor the man pages, it would be nice if
casper worked as it should.
#2 If you do not want to allow these boot options, consider updating the ubuntu
man pages. It is frustrating when things do not work according to the man page.

If you then try to customize the cd
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization

2. The casper scripts over write /etc/casper.conf at some point in using
mksquashfs. So even if I edit /etc/casper.conf it is not properly
packaged on the resulting iso.

So the "solution" is to manually unpackage the initramfs and start
hacking through the customizations to the scripts or build a CD from
scratch.

Thank you Joseph, I can submit "apport-collect 899244" if it would help,
otherwise it is a small configuration change.

The stub driver affects only the GMA500. You would think the stub driver
would be compatible with the psg_gfx, but it is not.

[Bug 899244] [NEW] GMA500 psb_gfx

2011-12-02 Thread bodhi.zazen
Public bug reported:

This is a bug report against the generic kernel , i386

As you may know, support for the GMA500 has been under rapid development
and there is a psb_gfx staging driver.

You have been kind enough to enable this driver in the kernel, but it
conflicts with the gma500 stub driver.

See:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/configs/natty/i386-config.flavour.generic
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/configs/oneiric/i386-config.flavour.generic

The conflict is with the "polusbo" kernel module

CONFIG_STUB_POULSBO=m

This needs to change to

CONFIG_STUB_POULSBO=n

Once you make that change, the psb_gfx module will work out of the box
on GMA500 cards with native resolution.

The driver only has 2d , and there are other options post install, but
it is better then having X fail on the live CD.

If you have the hardware, you can see for yourself.

Boot the Precise live CD -> X will faiil

switch to a console (ctrl-alt-f2) , become root

rmmod poulsbo
modprobe psb_gfx

Then simply startx

Once you make this config change, you will be the first distro to have
support for the gma500 "out of the box"

[Bug 790009] Re: Vino should not be included in the default install

2011-05-31 Thread bodhi.zazen
IMHO, VNC, specifically vino, is the single most common crack I see on
the Ubuntu forums.

While VNC servers may be familiar to new users coming from Windows, and
while it may be disabled by default, it is all too easy for new users to
enable and then their router forwards the port via UPnP.

Please consider either removing vino, or firewalling it, or perphas an
alternate VNC server, such as FreeNX.

[Bug 570505] [NEW] boot fails if fstab is misconfigured

2010-04-26 Thread bodhi.zazen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mountall

Ubuntu 9.10

If /etc/fstab is misconfigured, boot fails

Working fstab entry

/dev/sda8 /mnt/lotus auto noauto 0 0

BUT if we delete the "auto" (no file system specified)

/dev/sda8 /mnt/lotus noauto 0 0

Now, with this misconfigured line ^^

As Ubuntu boots, we get an error message from mountall, /dev/sda8 failed
to mount, hit Esc to drop to a maintance shell ...

However, Ubuntu will not drop to a maintenance shell.

I had to boot a live CD , mount the root partition, and manually fix
/etc/fstab

Try it for yourself and see =)

Ubuntu should :

1. Skip the misconfigured mount

2. Drop to a maintenance shell

I do not think this was a request to support an older kernel, I think
this is a request to examine the possibility of using Ubuntu 10.05 with

This problem still exists in lucid Beta 2.

As a work around, consider using privoxy.

sudo apt-get install privoxy

Then edit /etc/dansguardian/dansguardian.conf , the privoxy uses port

[Bug 512200] Re: LXC does not work with lucid host and lucid container

2010-02-02 Thread bodhi.zazen
I got it working, with a lot less tweaking then you posted on the forums
sweetsinse.

I will work through my notes and post an update ASAP. Basically you do
not need to worry about udev , just set up your devices and edit a few
system files.

Personally I use a static IP on both the host node and in the
containers, and it is very fast.

The default lxc in lucid is 0.6.4 I believe there is a ppa with a more
recent version.

http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/lxc

I will try to compile 0.6.5 and see if the -d flag works, and if so,
hopefully the lucid repo could be updated to 0.6.5 ? I am not sure about
that.

[Bug 512200] Re: LXC does not work with lucid host and lucid container

2010-02-01 Thread bodhi.zazen
Normally you would enter the container with lxc-console -n ubuntu ,
however it is not working for me as of yet with a lucid container.

Your config file looks very very scant, that is probably about as
minimal as you can get, what else did you do teo set up your container ?
You need to do a bunch of manual configuration still, at least configure
your networking.

Once you have a container up and running you can connect with lxc-
console , ssh , VNC, you of course need to install the servers in the
container first.

I was able to get a lucid container to boot last night, and it will
start "OK" in that I can connect to the container via ssh.

I can not connect via ssh as above.

if I start the container with the -d option

lxc-start -d -n ubuntu

It does not boot properly.

It boots "OK" if I do not use the -d option

lxc-start -n ubuntu

It gets an IP address, and I can ssh in, but no luck with lxc-console.

[Bug 514379] [NEW] Lack of documentation

2010-01-29 Thread bodhi.zazen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lxc

In general, although I understand LXC is new and in development, there
is a lack of quality documentation on the Ubuntu wiki on how to
configure and use LXC.

There are people willing to assist with documentation, see this thread
on the forums:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1382823

There is a draft wiki page here :

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LXC

I will contribute what I can, but I am just starting to learn lxc so I
apologize in advance for any errors.

Please understand the necessity for quality documentation.

[Bug 512200] Re: LXC does not work with lucid host and lucid container

2010-01-29 Thread bodhi.zazen
I also have this problem.

I build a container with debootstrap --variant minbase

I then confirmed the files in rootfs.lucid/dev were present and had the
appropriate permissions.

I wrote a basic config defining the network, container name, root , etc

The container starts but does not mount proc sys dev/shm or dev/pts

If I chroot in and manually mount then restart the container, still no
joy.

The container itself outputs

# lxc-start -n lucid

mountall: Could not connect to Plymouth

I attempted to use the upstart script I use in my karmic openvz VPS, but
it did not help.

I have tried lxc-fedora from the ubuntu package (extracted the archive)

[Bug 448495] Re: ubuntu and zenix unable to start X on liveCD

2009-10-12 Thread bodhi.zazen
Scot: If you would like to discuss this via e-mail I would be happy to.

What you said was

"Nothing here suggests an Upstart bug, simply an issue with your
distribution's configuration"

What I think you should have done is:

1. If it is not an upstart bug, you should have provided feedback so
that people can improve their bug reports. How are we to know it is not
a problem with upstart ? The system does not boot and there are no logs.

I assume you know upstart quite well, but that is no excuse to treat
those who do not the way you did. The way you responded to this bug
report is frankly arrogant and, IMO, inappropriate.

2. I linked Ubuntu bug reports above, so you make a mistake. It is a
problem with Ubuntu, and specifically it seems mountall. So again, IMO
it is inappropriate for you to treat this project in such a
condescending disrespectful manor.

These are bug reports and people are trying to help improve Ubuntu. You
really should treat them with a little more respect. Just because you
are a developer does not mean you have the right to behave this way. If
you took the time to educate , the quality of bug reports would improve.
If you do not want to take the time, best not to respond at all then come
across the way you did.

[Bug 436130] Re: no /proc/self/mountinfo in an OpenVZ VPS

2009-10-07 Thread bodhi.zazen
I reported this bug upstream as well.

As a work around you can run 9.10 , you just need to start the VE
manually.

For example if you are running 9.10 in a template (VE) 910

sudo vzctrl start 910
sudo vzctrl exec 910 init 2

Assuming your template is working it (the VE) will then start.

Making a 9.10 template is another matter, if you need assistance with
that see :

[Bug 436130] Re: Upstart fails to boot in an OpenVZ VPS

2009-09-26 Thread bodhi.zazen
I can attach my template if you wish.

Honestly, no offense, but somebody familiar with VPS needs to look at
this along with someone familiar with Upstart or at least the boot
scripts.

If you do not know anything about VPS or OpenVZ, my bug report is not
going to make sense.

If you would like, download the OpenVZ live CD and run it in a virtual
machine (it runs just fine in VMWare or VirtualBox)

When you boot the live CD it will give you step by step directions to
use OpenVZ

http://wiki.openvz.org/Download/live_CD

IMO the Centos Version is better =)

An openVZ template is basically the same thing as performing a
debootstrap install into a chroot.

The Ubuntu 9.10 template, or guest, or (OpenVZ) VPS guest uses the host
kernel as OpenVZ is a kernel patch for the host.

It seems I was not clear with my last post, but i have no idea where or
how you want me to use your --debug , either on the host or the OpenVZ
guest so if it would help you to see the output of that command I need
more detailed instructions then that.

I have given you the exact error message I am getting :

1. Networking does not start.

2. The upstart boot scripts do not run. They do not run the upstart boot
scripts, they do not start services, and they do not run /etc/rc.local

3. service networking restart is broken :

r...@new:/# service networking restart
networking: unrecognized service

4. /etc/init.d/networking gives an error message :

r...@new:/# bash --debug /etc/init.d/networking restart
 * Reconfiguring network interfaces... .: 14: Can't open
/lib/init/mount-functions.sh
run-parts: /etc/network/if-up.d/mountnfs exited with return code 2
.: 14: Can't open /lib/init/mount-functions.sh
run-parts: /etc/network/if-up.d/mountnfs exited with return code 2

And exits without starting the network.

[Bug 436130] Re: Upstart fails to boot in an OpenVZ VPS

2009-09-25 Thread bodhi.zazen
Are you familiar with OpenVZ ? VPS ?

http://wiki.openvz.org/Main_Page

You build a "template" which then runs as a guest on the host node.

There are several guides for how to do this, basically you use
debootstrap

http://wiki.openvz.org/Debian_template_creation

You then start or boot the guest.

I am showing you that the guest does not start normally. Ubuntu 9.10
worked until about a week ago, when the boot scripts were replaced, see
my original bug report (which was marked as a duplicate of some
unrelated bug ... ).

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/netbase/+bug/431065

How can my system be "out of date" ???
I just built it using debootstrap, it is as up to date as possible, unless a
new package was added to the Ubuntu 9.10 repositories in the last hour or so.

What I am showing you is :

1. The upstart scripts do not run and , for example, networking is not
started. The VPS I am showing you is a minimal .

If you like I can install apache, nginx, mysql, any other server you
wish and they sre not started when the VPS boots.

2. I believe it is upstart when we call a "service" to restart

service foo restart

so why is it that upstart is not recognizing the service "networking"
???

3. As you can see, the boot scripts and upstart are calling a script,
/lib/init/mount-functions.sh, which does not exist.

It sure would be a shame if Ubuntu decides not to support running 9.10
in a VPS (As you know, VPS is popular in some circles, OpenVZ,
parallels, Xen, VMWare ESi ... ).

Ubuntu 91.0 was working , it is now broken, seemingly related to either
upstart and or the boot process or it appears both.

for example, why can I restart my network , and obtain an ip address and
connectivity with

/etc/init.d/networking restart

but not

service networking restart

???

And back at you, what is it you want me to use the --debug flag with
exactly ???

[Bug 436130] [NEW] Upstart fails to boot in an OpenVZ VPS

2009-09-24 Thread bodhi.zazen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: upstart

I am running Ubuntu servers as a VPS using OpenVZ

The new upstart is not working in the ubuntu 9.10 VPS.

It seems that Upstart is not calling telinit 2 or init 2

I can not figure out why, have been looking in the /etc/event /etc/init
directories for a few days now.

I filed a bunch of information on another bug report, but that bug
report was labeled as a 'duplicate" which it is not and seems to be
ignored.

Old bug report :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/netbase/+bug/431065

My Ubuntu 9.10 template is up to date as of the filing of this report.

guesses ?

In a VPS things are mounted in /proc/self ???

This bug still exists, the latest updates as of today have not fixed the
problem.

I see this is still marked as a duplicate and the duplicate is marked as
solved.

Would you suggest I start a new bug report ?

This is not a duplicate and as far as I can tell upstart is not calling
rc2.d

[Bug 377039] Re: Firewall documentation is outdated

2009-09-23 Thread bodhi.zazen
You may wish to configure a firewall to protect your computer from
unauthorized access.

Understanding a few basic concepts will help you configure a firewall
and should be sufficient for most desktop users.

First, keep in mind Linux, and thus Ubuntu, is modular. This means that
rather then one large program that "does it all" , several smaller
applications are used. Often there is more then one option for each
individual component.

Firewall

The firewall is called netfilter and by default is permissive, meaning
it allows all traffic. netfilter can be configured using a command line
program iptables.

Configuration Tools.

There are several tools that can be used to configure a firewall.

UFW is a command line tool included with Ubuntu. To activate your
firewall open a terminal and type

[code]sudo ufw enable[/code]

For the vast majority of desktop users ufw is sufficient.

Many people prefer graphical configuration tools and the default
graphical tool in Ubuntu is gufw. It can be installed using Add/Remove
programs, synaptic, or command line tools and is available from your
menu under

System -> Administration -> Firewall Configuration.

To active your firewall , click (check off) the "Enabled" button on the
Left, under "Actual Status".

If you prefer, several additional configuration tools are available in
the Ubuntu repositories including Firestarter, Guard dog, and Shorewall.

Testing and Monitoring your network traffic (firewall).

Because Ubuntu is modular we have separate options to test and monitor
network traffic.

To test your firewall it is best to scan it from a second computer and
nmap is a popular application to use. Again you will need to install
nmap , then run

[code]nmap -vAPN ip_address[/code]

To see what services are associated with the open ports run

[code]lsof -i -n -P[/code]

Actual monitoring of your network traffic can be done with either
wireshark or snort. Wireshark will analyze the network packets (of
information) and snort is used in NIDS (Network Intrusion Detection
System) and will notify you of unusual traffic.

Just an update: We have a frontpage for firewall documentation:
   https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Firewall
Also wrote a page for Gufw:
   https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gufw
And updated UFW page (and moved it):
   https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UFW

Iptables page - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Iptables - hasn't been
updated yet, but bodhi.zazen will write up something to replace the
existing firewall page in the system docs (which at the moment only
really talks about Firestarter [outdated]), and I'll put it into Docbook
XML. The plan is to get this in before the Karmic String Freeze on
October 1.

As you can see, syslogd did not start. I am not running any additional services
on this test VPS. On other VPS, in addition to syslog, this affects all
additional services including (on various VPS) mysql, postgresql, lighhtpd,
apache, and nginx (to name a few =)

Re: [Bug 431065] Re: networking uses mount-functions.sh which doesn't exist

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/430355

Thank you for looking into this. These bugs are not duplicates.

First , I performed a fresh install and there was no mount-functions.sh to
remove.

I added the script myself to allow me to run ifdown and ifup.

See :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/netbase/+bug/431065/comments/5

So something in the init scripts is calling the mount-functions.sh

Second there seems to be something wrong with upstart, it does not recognize
networking -

quote -
r...@localhost:/# service networking restart
restart: Unknown instance:
r...@localhost:/# service networking stop
stop: Unknown instance:
r...@localhost:/# service networking
Usage: /etc/init.d/networking {start|stop|restart|force-reload}

So while I appreciate your efforts, the problem is deeper.

I am running an OpenVZ template that is up to date as of the time of
this message and my problems persist.
