I have downloaded sources and narrowed down font issue ... Gnome system interface font is used to render strings ... System configures size of this font to 11 (gnome-tweak-util), but somehow this is increased to 29 in logisim ... I can confirm this. nVidia GT 520 here. Same version of system, KDE and drivers. It happened today for the first time. I'm using Kubuntu 13.10 for a couple of weeks now but I didn't experience the problem until today. Kubuntu 13.04 + KDE 4.11 from backports PPA didn't have this problem. It seems it is triggered by multiple enables/disables of compositing. I also experience some crashes and freezes of LibreOffice that trace back to Qt libraries so it made me believe that the problem is caused by incompatibilities of Qt libraries and nVidia drivers. I'm currently in the middle of writing such "agent" myself. Still, I'm very interested in your solution. Is your agent using NetworkManager D-Bus interface or some other method to make connections. Since I don't have experience with D-Bus, using D-Bus interface seemed too complicated to me so I have an idea of generating NetworkManager connection profile in /etc/NetworkManager /system-connections/ and using "nmcli" to connect/disconnect. LDAP + PAM module looks even more interesting. That's something I planed all along but never had enough time to invest into making it work (I also have student credentials stored in LDAP). Questions: Do all of your users get shared local account (like Guest session) when they log in? Or does separate local accounts and home directories get created on first login? Or maybe home directories are on a network share? I'd really like to see how you implemented this. This "bug" has a huge impact on us. We have 20 netbook's with around 400 potential users of each netbook. Netbooks are "rented" by our students at our library. Students are expected to use their own credentials to connect to "eduroam" per eduroam's terms of use. It's very impractical to make 400 local user accounts for each student on every netbook and new/old accounts have to be added/deleted often. The netbooks currently have Windows installed but we would like to make a transition to Linux and this "bug" is a show stopper for us. We'd like to be able to just define parameters like "Security", "Authentication", "CA certificate" and "Inner authentication" for "eduroam" connection and leave "Username" and "Password" fields blank. If you are still interested in this bug I have an almost guaranteed way to reproduce it. But it's slightly demanding of your work environment, since it means using MATE desktop environment and replacing it's WM 'marco' with 'compiz'. Once you have this Compiz/Mate combo running, you need to open a few windows (I typically have >10 various applications open so this bug hits me often). If you minimize al windows, using for example panel Show Desktop Button or a keyboard shortcut defined in CCSM (I have Super+M setup to minimize all windows) you will almost certainly create one of those "ghost" windows that are clickable and block access to desktop icons and sometimes even windows below them, but are invisible. If you want the nasty version of the bug (where a window even disappears from taskbar so you cannot remove it any way but sucessfully guessing where it's close button is located) try tampering with CCSM options Enable Widget Layer. I don't have a Radeon card, and this happens to me as well. I just upgraded to 12.04 from 11.04 and I thought the problem would be solved, but it is not. It still happens randomly. It blanks the screen 2-3 times in a row, separtaed by a few seconds. Then it's good for half an hour or so. Then it does it again. I doubt it's the screen saver or something like that. Hmm, I think I've found what triggers the bug--partman only freezes if there's unpartitioned space (I had around 280 GB reserved for a Windows 7 partition). I have attached a boot log (dmesg) when system fails to boot properly. As can be clearly seen, agpgart-amd64 is loaded after the drm and radeon modules, too late infact, and system either hangs or drops to command line. If you compare this boot log to the boot log I attached earlier (with apport-collect), you'll see that the order in which modules in question are loaded is completely different. The order seems to be random every time the system is booted. In a boot log of a successful attempt to boot the system, agpgart-amd64 module is loaded after the agpgart module and just before drm. Sorry for this. apport-collect didn't really work as I expected. First of all I have to say that I'm *sure* my problem is same as the problem original reporter has. We have almost the same hardware and logs show the same problem. Anyway, the bug is still present in Lucid Final LiveCD. agpgart, amd64_agp, drm and radeon modules are loaded in parallel so there is race condition. The logs I attached up there are of a system that booted successfully ... BUT... it was only 1 out of 4 of my attempts to boot the system. In other three attempts system failed to boot. Sometimes it boots to command line, sometimes it hangs completely, it all depends on order in which modules finished loading. The bug is present in Lucid Lynx Beta1 (KDE 4.4.1 packages) too. Again, as with RC, after manually restarting "plasma-desktop" the bug disappears. On the other hand, I *could not* reproduce this bug with Fedora 13 Beta (using KDE 4.4.1) and Arch (using KDEmod 4.4.2). It seems this bug is Kubuntu (or Debian) specific. Similar (same?) bug is already reported on bugs.kde.org here -> https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=232171 , but it has not been confirmed or got any attention. I can move and resize widgets as expected but as soon as I move the cursor away from widget and the "side control" "slides back in", a widget jumps to it's previous position/size or some weird random position aligning itself with other widgets. Sometimes it stays in a place/keeps the size but most of the time it does not. Moving/resizing a widget also affects other widgets. Sometimes by moving one widget it will shuffle all other widgets but without any logic. I does not seem that widgets are aligning themselves with some kind of grid. Some widgets, like Kubuntu Feed, will take the whole desktop by itself. Using Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx RC LiveCD 32-bit, KDE 4.4.2. Tested it on two different computers. Same thing happens on both of them. I can move and resize widgets as expected but as soon as I move the cursor away from widget and the "side control" "slides back in", a widget jumps to it's previous position/size or some weird random position aligning itself with other widgets. Sometimes it stays in a place/keeps the size but most of the time it does not. Moving/resizing a widget also affects other widgets. Sometimes by moving one widget it will shuffle all other widgets but without any logic. I does not seem that widgets are aligning themselves with some kind of grid. Some widgets, like Kubuntu Feed, will take the whole desktop by itself. Using Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx RC LiveCD 32-bit, KDE 4.4.2. Tested it on two different computers. I can confirm this bug too. Using 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx RC (LiveCD only atm). Can't boot with KMS enabled. At some point, boot process hangs repeatedly showing message "BUG: soft lockup - CPU #0 stuck for 61s! [plymouthd:1183]" every minute or so. Somehow I were able to boot into command prompt and after looking trough logs, I saw error messages involving AGP GART and agpgart-amd64 loading after DRM initialization just as described in bug description here. I can boot successfully if I enable "nomodeset" boot option but splash (plymouth) is shown in low res and low color mode and DRI (including 3D acceleration) is not working. Fedora 13 Beta works correctly but judging by lsmod an dmesg, Fedora seems to have agpgart-amd64 module built into the kernel. It loads before DRM initialization as expected. Mario's patches introduce some regressions. Bridged AGP cards are affected because of the missing PCI-IDs in "nv_list.csv". I suppose "nv_list.csv" was based on NVKnownChipsets[] table from "nv_driver.c", but, as I already confirmed, NVKnownChipsets[] is not a complete table of all *supported* chips. Bridged AGP cards are handled differently by the code so their PCI-IDs are not listed in NVKnownChipsets[]. NVKnownChipsets[] is mare string reference. Affected PCI-IDs are 02E0-02E4 and 00F0-00FF. The result of all of this is that -nv is refusing to work with affected cards even when they are supported. In Jaunty, -nv worked just fine with my card - GeForce 7600 GS AGP, thou autodetection failed because of the same reason. Now in Karmic, autodetection works but driver fails to work. Bryce, I took some time to test the Beta version of Karmic Koala Kubuntu, LiveCD only thou. I must say that things are even worse now. Not only does autodetection fails but now -nv doesn't work at all with my card. I also took some time to take a look at new patches introduced in Ubuntu package of -nv 2.1.14, "0001-Move-the-logic-for...patch" and "0002-Run-the-parsing-script...patch". If I understand correctly, NVKnownChipsets[] and NVPciIdMatchList[] tables, this time in separate files - "nvidia_chipset_gen.h" and nvidia_pci_device_match_gen.h, are now generated from a file called "nv_list.cvs", using a Perl script called "parse_pci_ids.pl". I suppose "nv_list.cvs" is maintained manually. The problem is that, once again, PCI-IDs 02E0-02E4 and 00F0-00FF are missing, this time in "nv_list.cvs". That's probably because "nv_list.cvs" was based on NVKnownChipsets[]. As we already confirmed, NVKnownChipsets[] is not a complete table of all *supported* chips. Fixing this problem now is not simple as before (just by editing nv.ids). This time editing of "nv_list.cvs" is required, then you have to generate NVKnownChipsets[] and NVPciIdMatchList[] and then you have to recompile the driver. As for the problem of -nv failing to work completely, as far as I could tell, it's because of the NVPciIdMatchList[] table. NVPciIdMatchList[] matched any chip with nVidia vendor ID (12D2 and 10DE) in the original source code but after the patches it only matches a selection of PCI-IDs generated from "nv_list.cvs". So the driver reports to the X Server that my card is not supported. In the end -vesa is used instead. Xorg.0.log will be in attachment. It can be clearly seen that -nv was picked by X Server as candidate (so autodetection did work?) but dropped later in favor of -vesa. Sollution: Add PCI-IDs 02E0-02E4 and 00F0-00FF to "nv_list.cvs", use "parse_pci_ids.pl", and recompile the driver. 9100, 7025 and 7050 are either mobile or intergrated chips. It seems they are not officialy supported by the driver. IDs are not referenced in the source code anywhere in any way. Upstream maintainer, Aaron Plattner I believe, should be asked if those chips are supported or not. Were those IDs left out by mistake or on purpose. A rather large number of mobile chips is affected - IDs 07xx, 08xx and some 053x. Has anyone tested those chips agains -nv by adding IDs to source code? My point exactly. Thanks for helping me clarify this bug even more. Since no one i paying attention, I was prepared to make a patch myself, thou my idea was to modifying the way "nv.ids" is generated in "01_gen_pci_ids.diff". A the moment the script looks like this: awk '/{ 0x.*/ || /case 0x.*/ {print $$2}' ${srcdir}/nv_driver.c | sed -e s/0x// -e s/,// -e s/:// -e s/^0/10DE0/ | sort -u > nv.ids This line doesn't even work and "nv.ids" must be cleaned afterwards. "/case 0x.*/" is useless too. I never said that it should just "match NVIDIA as a vendor". I said that "nv.ids" should explicitely have, or match with whildcards/bitmasks, PCI-IDs of all hardware -nv *supports*, nothing more, nothing less, and that's not an upstream problem. "nv.ids" is not generated by upstream. So the problem are the cards with PCI-IDs 02Ex (02E0, 02E1, 02E2, 02E3 and 02E4, to be exact) and 00Fx (where x is 1-F) because of the way "nv.ids" is generated at the moment. While generating "nv.ids", the piece of code I put up there was not taken into consideration, so "nv.ids" is missing some PCI-IDs of card that are properly supported by -nv. It's not realy a big problem, it's only autodetection that's not working. I, myself, have no problem with that. Some supported cards, for example, AGP versions of the cards where both AGP and PCI-E versions exist, are handled diferently by the code. I thought of opening a new bug report but since it's related to this one, infact it's basicaly the same bug, I didn't want to make another "duplicated bug" but, if it's necessary, I'll make a new bug report. Thank's for finding more video cards missing PCI-IDs, I didn't have time to closely look at http://pciids.sourceforge.net/pci.ids. Thou, nv driver maybe doesn't realy work with some of those cards - should be tested. This bug still exists for a number of other GeForce 7xxx cards. The video cards affected are AGP versions of 7xxx family of cards. Both "/usr/share/xserver-xorg/pci/nv.ids" and driver sources (nv_driver.c) are missing PCI-IDs. Affected video cards are AGP versions of GeForce 7600 GT (10de:02e0), GeForce 7600 GS (10de:02e1), GeForce 7300 GT (10de:02e2) (this one is fixed), GeForce 7900 GS (10de:02e3) and GeForce 7950 GT (10de:02e4). PCI-E versions of these cards are NOT affected (PCI-IDs are present). Just booted Jauntu LiveCD yesterday for the first time and X server failed to detect my video card (AGP version of GeForce 7600 GS - 10de:02e1). VESA driver was used instead of nv driver. By manualy adding appropriate PCI-ID to "/usr/share/xserver-xorg/pci/nv.ids" and restarting X server, autodetection worked like a charm and I didn't have any problems with nv driver - changing resolution and refresh rate worked.
