[Bug 1766945] Re: (EFI on top of legacy install) choosing "replace" or "resize" options in partitioning may lead to an install failure

2021-08-02 Thread Buck Weat
I got bit.

I attempted a new install of the latest (as of 2021-08-01) 18.04 (5.xx
kernel as I recall) onto a 19GB partition (/dev/sdf2) on one disk while
specifying the bootloader location be onto a different disk (/dev/sda)
with an existing, working, boot-efi partition (/dev/sda1).

I had done this same os install successfully onto a 7GB partition on a
3rd disk (/dev/sdc2) just before.

On the 19GB install, a fatal error occurred suggesting it was unable to
write to do the final grub install onto /dev/sda.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1846443 ***

Simply moving the left margin of gnome-tweaks to the left exposes the
category list, making it seem more likely that the window has not been
given a size.

[Bug 1846025] [NEW] cron can crash (SIGSEGV) when trying to re-parent orphans

2019-09-30 Thread buck huppmann
Public bug reported:

We sometimes have people come and go, leaving behind
old crontab files that, when they return, and are given
the same username, no longer have the correct uid.
This can cause cron to crash when it has the old crontab
file on its orphans list. Below's a lightly-edited
backtrace, with username replaced by "joeuser".

Here's the user's (former) crontab:

-rw--- 1 48031 crontab 1216 Jul 26 15:36
/var/spool/cron/crontabs/joeuser

Whereas his new uid is

# id -u joeuser
48529

This is on bionic with cron 3.0pl1-128.1ubuntu1

--buck

Core was generated by `/usr/sbin/cron -f'.
Program terminated with signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

Issue:
=
I'm attempting to connect via IPSec on an Ubuntu LiveCD. The vpn connection
fails the connection - seemingly due to an issue with the Split DNS setting.
Best I can tell (but I'm no expert) it seems the server is not providing a
setting and this causes the vpnc client to crash.

The error message is:

[Bug 219057] Re: Bluetooth does not coexist with WiFi

2017-01-16 Thread Buck Evan
This workaround fixed this issue for me:

echo "options iwlwifi bt_coex_active=0" | sudo tee -a
/etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf

The above instructions set a bunch of unrelated options, and also blank
out any pre-existing content.

[Bug 1401845] Re: nvidia-331-updates-uvm 331.113-0ubuntu0.0.4: nvidia-331-updates-uvm kernel module failed to build

2015-01-17 Thread Buck
The process I found that seems to be in common is that I am working with
a lot of firefox windows open. The computer thrashes and all but freezes
up. I click, but it may take 10 minutes to recover and when I click
something else or scroll the browser window, the system does it all over
again. When I turn off the computer, instead of waiting, when it boots
up, there are updates to be installed.

After running the updates, if the system requires a reboot, I get this
bug report again.

I have seen this pattern at least 4 times.

2014-08-14 Thread Charles 'Buck' Krasic
Ahh, this issue has been driving me crazy since I did the 14.04 upgrade.

I'm using ubuntu 14.04 + xfce4 + plex connected to my yamaha receiver
and panasonic hdtv (with pulse-eight cec usb dongle). (setup is years
old).

The procedure above (#22) did the trick for me. Thanks!

[Bug 1309292] [NEW] Broken Bpython Package

[Bug 1241327] Re: missing ia32-libs package on Saucy (13.10)

2014-02-23 Thread Buck Golemon
I don't understand why there isn't a ia32-libs:i386 which has the same behavior
as the old ia32-libs.
This would give us something that works.

As it stands I have to go hunt down a list of the libraries that used to
be installed by ia32-libs and manually install each.

[Bug 1241327] Re: missing ia32-libs package on Saucy (13.10)

2014-02-23 Thread Buck Golemon
Actually I believe this is what I've asked for:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/i386/ia32-libs-multiarch/20090808ubuntu36

but it doesn't show up in apt-cache search. When trying to download and isntall
the deb, I get dependency not satisfiable: libgphoto2-2, and indeed that
package has been deleted for saucy:i386:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/i386/libgphoto2-2

Should I file a bug against ia32-libs-multiarch?

This was a transitional package.
Doesn't that indicate that this transitional package was deleted prematurely?

[Bug 140786] Re: key remaps no longer work

2012-05-20 Thread Buck Golemon
This is what you're looking for:

log_action_begin_msg Saving console font and keymap for next boot
setupcon --save-only

From debian/keyboard-configuration.console-setup.init in this package:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/console-setup

This creates a cached keymap, like so:

. /etc/default/console-setup
. /etc/default/keyboard
ckbcomp $acm_option $rules_option -model $XKBMODEL \
$XKBLAYOUT $XKBVARIANT $XKBOPTIONS \
| gzip -9 2/dev/null /etc/console-setup/cached.kmap.gz

The cached keymap is used when starting the 'console-setup' service:
(/etc/init/console-setup.conf)
loadkeys /etc/console-setup/cached.kmap.gz

Putting it all together:

. /etc/default/console-setup
. /etc/default/keyboard
ckbcomp $acm_option $rules_option -model $XKBMODEL \
$XKBLAYOUT $XKBVARIANT $XKBOPTIONS \
| sed -f /etc/kbd/remap \
| gzip -9 2/dev/null /etc/console-setup/cached.kmap.gz
loadkeys /etc/console-setup/cached.kmap.gz

 @Joseph,

re-enabling CONFIG_NET_NS has been rejected. As I understand it,
because backport kernels are supported on LTS releases, that is seen as
the right path for those requiring network namespaces.

At least one other person on this ticket asserted that the backport
kernels are too unreliable for their taste. Bringing in a whole new
kernel to reenable one option sounds like lunacy to me.

I am not enthusiastic about this solution -- I would rather reroll the
LTS 2.6.32 kernels (as they appear on lucid-security) with a trivial
in-house patch that reenables cgroups, than to run a completely new
kernel from backports.

And indeed, as soon as I see a kernel USN that worries me
sufficiently, that is exactly what I will do. Until then I have
simply pinned the kernel at 2.6.32-31.

[Bug 796937] [NEW] Disable CONFIG_NET_NS (for #720095) breaks LXC

2011-06-13 Thread Trent W. Buck
Public bug reported:

 affects ubuntu/lxc
 affects ubuntu/linux
 importance critical
 tag regression-updates
 done

Justification: LXC is the *ONLY* lightweight virtualization system
available in Lucid; without it, the next lightest is KVM.

My containers need their own network stacks. After upgrading from
2.6.32-31 to -32, my containers completely failed to start. I believe
this is because you removed CONFIG_NET_NS for #720095. This *may*
even break containers that share host node's network stack, I haven't
checked.

The lxc package includes an lxc-checkconfig script you can use to
check the compile-time options of the running kernel.

I'm easily able to build this from source. Can I help by uploading a
package?

What is holding this up, exactly?

Sorry to seem impatient, but it's been over four months.

Re: [Bug 756909] Re: no borders, no panel

2011-04-22 Thread Buck Golemon
I nearly certain that I did not see such dependencies in aptitude, and I
know that there were no broken packages.

I did a complete upgrade, then followed the upgrade instructions
successfully.
There were no errors, no false starts.

I'll check the details when I get home.
Is there any log that you might want to see?

[Bug 756909] Re: no borders, no panel

2011-04-13 Thread Buck Golemon
@Bilal: this is not the issue. I was eventually able to get things
working by installing the full compiz package ( only compiz-core was
required by dependencies ) and running the compiz-window-decorator.

I'll need to fiddle with it some more to find how to reproduce the bug
exactly. At this point it seems like insufficient dependencies on the
unity package.

[Bug 581744] Affects lucid

2011-01-20 Thread Trent W. Buck
 affects lucid
 thanks

From #ubuntu-server:
13:54 twb So guess what I just discovered
13:54 twb Purging ufw from lucid causes it to disable the firewall -- EVEN IF
ufw wasn't involved in firewalling
13:55 twb This is especially great when I happen to be removing ufw from a
chroot, on a production server running AT A PRISON
13:56 jmarsden Grin! This is why we should do our learning and trying out
new things on a test machine in a safe and controlled environment... I don't
think a live production server in a prison counts as a safe and controlled
environment :)
13:57 fluvvell jmarsden, thanks - reading it now - urr once samba.org wakes
up!
13:57 twb jmarsden: well, yes, we did test things
13:57 jmarsden fluvvell: You're welcome
13:57 twb jmarsden: but you tend not to notice when the firewall falls into
allow all mode on the test box, or you just assume it was one of the other
idiot devs that did it
14:06 fluvvell urk, ufw is installed by default! I never noticed that when I
installed shorewall
14:12 twb fluvvell: it's installed but not enabled
14:12 twb fluvvell: BUT, purging it doesn't check whether it's enabled first
14:13 twb IMO its postrm should say am I enabled? If not, leave the
firewall the hell alone
00:21 jdstrand twb: re ufw purge-- this is bug #581744, fixed in maverick.
would you mind adding a comment to that bug, saying it affects you on lucid,
and I can do an SRU

This is with a 8.04 server as the host OS and a 10.04 chroot
(generated by extracting the filesystem.squashfs from the 10.04.3
desktop live/install CD).

You can *probably* reproduce this by simply debootstraping a lucid
chroot, chroot it apt-get install ufw, chroot it apt-get purge ufw.

I see that some audio stuff was just updated in Maverick, was this fix
included? I noticed it on my other computer and I don't currently have
Maverick installed on the laptop so I'm not able to check for myself at
the moment.

[Bug 660904] [NEW] tcpdump 4.0.0-6ubuntu3 denied read access to ethers(5) by apparmor profile

2010-10-14 Thread Trent W. Buck
Public bug reported:

 affects ubuntu/tcpdump
 importance low

While debugging the configuration of my Ubuntu router, I noticed the
following in dmesg:

[ 2410.773511] type=1503 audit(1286949714.517:12): operation=open pid=1228
parent= profile=/usr/sbin/tcpdump requested_mask=r:: denied_mask=r::
fsuid=0 ouid=0 name=/etc/ethers
[92714.036092] type=1503 audit(1287040017.780:13): operation=open pid=19770
parent=19592 profile=/usr/sbin/tcpdump requested_mask=r:: denied_mask=r::
fsuid=0 ouid=0 name=/etc/ethers

I don't know why tcpdump *wants* to access ethers(5); probably to
supplement the in-kernel neighbours (ARP) table.

Note that out-of-the-box there is no /etc/ethers, which is probably
why nobody noticed this before. I use ethers(5) to tell dnsmasq which
MACs get fixed IPs via DHCP allocation.

langmarp, this bug seems to be pretty specific to the 7736z so I don't
think it will solve your sound issues. You should probably make a post
in the Ubuntu forums instead, people will be more helpful over there.

I can confirm that David's fix works and that the inputs I could check

The internal and mic jack both seem to work. And the speakers mute when

I have the 7736z and I can confirm that it works in Lucid. I just wiped
the hard drive and installed 10.04.1 and the sound works. It still works
after applying all of the available updates.

updates are applied.

2010-10-11 Thread Jimmy Buck
Thanks, gbhuvanesh, I'll try that on my 7736z when I reload 10.10 to get
the Alsa-Info that was requested earlier. But seeing as how I didn't
need to do anything like that in 10.04, I don't think I should have to
do it in 10.10.

Devs, since I just got this laptop, I don't have anything important on
it. I'm totally willing to do anything you need me to do to get this
figured out. I'll run that Alsa-Info script when I get home tonight.

[Bug 617647] Re: [Acer aspire 7736z - Realtek ALC888] ALSA test tone not correctly played back

2010-10-11 Thread Jimmy Buck
I have attached a zip file containing three output files from the alsa-
info script.

1. output from 10.04 with the sound working
2. output from 10.10 with no sound
3. output from 10.10 with the lines added to the alsa-base.conf file that were
suggested here, these lines didn't solve the problem for me, but I thought I
would run the script with them just in case

For the person who asked earlier, your alsa-base file should be located
at /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. Run the following in a terminal to
edit it:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

[Bug 518561] Re: radeon: jaunty-karmic regression: tv-out ntsc only gray/grey

2010-06-19 Thread Buck
Yes, this seems to be fixed in lucid, xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.13.0-1ubuntu5
(after i went back and got rid of my
/etc/modprobe.d/local-disable-radeon-modesetting
file that had
options radeon modeset=0
in it, to work with the old 6.12.1 driver i was using. Before i figured out to
go
back and do that, i had black-and-white on upgrading, which made me want
to tear my hair out; instead, i went completely berserk and built the latest
xf86-video-ati master (good news for Brync H., though: only the 102_ and 103_
patches conflicted, probably because they're backports) and then rebuilt the
old jaunty 6.12.1 driver, until i noticed a message in :0.log about ``CP'' being
disabled, which brought that whole kernel module side of things back to mind)

Thanks for getting this working; now i feel like i can almost go back to
treating
my mythbuntu box like the appliance i meant it to be when i bought it and hack
around on my debian machines instead, while the thing plays away. (Well,
honestly, i'm going to have to do something to get mythstream back, because
we don't have any decent jazz stations in my city, and i'd gotten spoiled tuning
into the stream from the public-radio jazz station back in Iowa. ``That's life
in
the big city,'' as they say)

[Bug 573168] [NEW] dpkg config resolver: should have Merge capability

2010-05-01 Thread Buck Golemon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dpkg

I'm certain this has been reported before, but I can't find the bug
after much searching...

dpkg currently gives this message when it tries to install a
configuration file over an customization:

Configuration file `/etc/configfile'
== Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
== Package distributor has shipped an updated version.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : background this process to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** issue (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?

Given that we have a base, theirs and mine, it seems a simple
change to add an M: attempt to merge option.

All of the 12 or so prompts I was given when upgrading to Lucid could
have been resolved this way. Even if the merge fails and there are
conflicts (unlikely), I would still prefer to resolve the conflict
manually than blindly throw away either my or the maintainer's edits.

 Implementation suggestion:

First prompt would look like this:

Configuration file `/etc/configfile'
== Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
== Package distributor has shipped an updated version.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
M : attempt to merge the differences
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : background this process to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** issue (Y/I/M/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?

If the merge fails with conflicts, bring up a second prompt:

Configuration file `/etc/configfile'
== Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
== Package distributor has shipped an updated version.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
M : manually resolve the conflicting differences
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : background this process to examine the situation

[Bug 294182] Re: GNOME's Help Slow to Load

2010-04-27 Thread Buck Golemon
This has been fixed upstream. We need someone to evaluate the new
version and push it into Lucid, please.

From the developer:
Yelp 2.31.1 does not scan the filesystem on startup. Startup times are fast
again, and I won't add anything that blocks startup. So this is fixed.

Um, isn't the whole point of separating acpi-support from acpid that
you can use the latter without being forced to pull in all the

[Bug 523688] [NEW] postinst calls start(8) instead of invoke-rc.d(8), ignores policy-rc.d(8).

2010-02-18 Thread Trent W. Buck
Public bug reported:

policy-rc.d(8) can be used to prevent sysvinit services from booting.
This is particularly important within chroots.

In Debian Sid, I used pbuilder(8) to create a lucid base.tgz chroot.
I then used pbuilder --login to get a shell, and ran apt-get install
apport. (I had heard that apport didn't just fire up a web browser,
and so I was trying to use it to report a bug in lucid's kernel.)

To my surprise, I found the postinst was trying to start a service:

Setting up apport (1.12-0ubuntu5) ...
start: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket
/com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused

Luckily it failed, because I wasn't running upstart outside the
chroot. But it seems to me that either upstart's start(8) should
either honour policy-rc.d, or at least reinvent it.

I see five things that could happen here:

 - I've misunderstood the error message. Flag MOREINFO.

 - upstart already has a policy-rc.d equivalent, and apport needs to
be told to honor it in apport's postinst. Assign to apport.

 - upstart already has a policy-rc.d equivalent, and pbuilder needs to
be told to create the appropriate deny all policy when creating
   Ubuntu-based chroots. Assign to pbuilder.

 - upstart has no policy-rc.d equivalent, and needs to grow one.
   Assign to upstart.

 - upstart has no policy-rc.d equivalent, and the upstart developers
think it doesn't need one. Flag WONTFIX and I get grumpier.
