[Bug 1659159] Re: KeePass 2.35 is not nice to your clipboard

2017-02-06 Thread cablop
In my case the issue is as follows:
I have to copy twice the things in my clipboard to get the whole thing. The
first time i copy i just get plain text, nothing else. A second copy of the
same content and i get its format or metadata, like URLs and alike. It happens
with Ctrl + C, with Ctrl + INS and mouse right click menu then selecting copy.

I had a hard time trying to find the guilty app that was interfering
with my system. At some point i came to believe i was a victim of a
keylogger or something similar. I was about to reinstall the whole
Linux, but i had to run an additional test and that found the KeePass as
the guilty thing... Is KeePass monitoring my clipboard or something?

The bad thing is those devices were working correctly with the previous
versions of Xorg... I think the problem is in the xorg thing and not
exactly in the driver... except that was a dormant failure never faced
before...

2012-05-05 Thread cablop
Sean, unfortunately that fix is not working on my machine.

Font corruption still happens no matter what DE i decide to use, KDE,
Gnome3, Unity, XFCE, LXDE... I didn't test Enlightenment, but it don't
expect enything else but the same bug.

In my opinion this is an issue of Xorg and not the driver, because
problems started to arise in the last update of Xorg.

[Bug 776736] Re: font corruption in firefox and gnome-terminal after suspend

2012-04-20 Thread cablop
It is also happening on Precise Pangolin, 12.04, beta.
I found the issue after screen becomes blank or after user switch. I saw it
only on Unity, never on XFCE, despite using composite on both. I didn't tried
on Gnome 3.
Today i found it happening on Firefox after Firefox was grayed due to becoming
unresponsive (too high memory usage); then the webpage characters became
corrupted, a refresh of the webpage seems to fix it, and the background behind
was 'pixelated'.
Using Intel Video Chipset on a desktop board:
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics

[Bug 721577] Re: xorg crashes on heavy load

2011-02-27 Thread cablop
I think this issue is heavy, you cannot afford your OS crashing and
losing your data and valuable time two or three times each day

anyway

I found the problem fires with a heavy memory load, not a heavy CPU
load, i tested the netbook with 2GB instead the default 1GB and the
problem fired just once

i think the problem is related to the fact the intel chipset uses a
dinamic amount of RAM from the RAM card and maybe at somepoint they
cannot resolve how to deal with it... when RAM is full at RAM and Video
lvl and both demand for more...

2011-02-20 Thread cablop
I'm not sure it is related to the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver, as
long as it was not happening with the fresh maverick install. I reverted
the latest video driver to the original maverick one but let the xorg
packages in the latest version and the issue still remains. So... why it
didn't happened before? i'll readd xorg-server expecting for you to
review it again.

[Bug 721577] [NEW] xorg crashes on heavy load

2011-02-18 Thread cablop
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

On Maverick when openning some applications the xorg crashes, it seems
to be related to a high CPU or memory load. It could also be related to
multimedia or audio, because it happens a lot when i was using flash
video, virtualbox or skype, it also happens when i use chrome in pages
with javascript (but no sound).

2010-12-18 Thread cablop
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 31746 ***

The expected behavior is:
1. run
firefox -P alternativeProfile --no-remote
it spawns a firefox with the alternative profile
2. run
firefox
or
firefox -P defaultProfile
it must spawn the default profile and run it as the main one

but in Ubuntu it fails, in windows it worked as expected, but not in Ubuntu. to
spawn the main or default by
firefox -P defaultProfile --no-remote
works, but the --no-remote flag makes it not work as expected, because new
links from third party applications look for a firefox with not this flag

the -a flag works, but it is not documented, i can't find what does it
do, nor the %u flag

[Bug 246413] Re: kcryptd process doesn't utilize multiple cpus

2010-12-15 Thread cablop
a simplier workarround not using LVM or Raid0 is just to create multiple
encrypted partitions, each one will run a single kcryptd, but you can
isolate the i/o demanding volumes, like the swap or a partition to hold
virtual machine disk images

the downside is you need to enter your password multiple times at boot...
somebody said that if you create them at install with the alternate disk you
can just use one password, but i lost the reference

at the linux irc somebody suggested the recommended number of partitions
is your number of cpu cores + 1

i'm running two partitions on a netbook now to isolate my virtual
machine and it seems to work nice, sometimes the computer become slow,
but it is not freezing, my VM is not saturating the kcryptd bottleneck
anymore, it has its own bottleneck to deal with :P

simplier and more flexible than the raid0 hack, well...

[Bug 539008] Re: Microsoft Sans Serif maps to Thai font even on european setups

2010-12-09 Thread cablop
There's no thai fonts scalable in my system. It is resolving the umlauts
and accented characters now, but what it is ignoring is the CJK
characters.

I tried the following

I opened a terminal, then

export LANG=ja

and then it shows this error

(KeePass.exe:30080): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
Using the fallback 'C' locale.

(KeePass could be downloaded at their website http://keepass.info and
get the portable one to do those tests).

I think it is related to the mono libraries.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 539008 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/539008

Sorry, Paul, this is not what is happening, i was running those
applicatrions from the command lie and i found that is says the c
library does not support the locale and revert to the default c
locale... and this is ansi, this is what is happening with mono on
ubuntu, as far as i can see. This is not a font claimming that locale,
and not the thai one (because i don have it installed, and it is
supposedly fixed in 10.10).

A way to test it. Download the portable KeePass 2. Run it via "mono
KeePass.exe" from a terminal and see what happens.

[Bug 687965] [NEW] Some applications show no menu, changing to another theme make the menu appear but new instances show no menu

2010-12-09 Thread cablop
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-themes

After upgrading to 10.10 i see this issue with some applications like
Audacity and Truecrypt. I tested it in other users on the machine, so it
is not a custom setting. It happens with any theme.

You open the application, Audacity, for example, it loads but shows no menu
(the one with file, edit, ...).
Then open the appearance settings and change to a different theme, then the
menu appears for that window.
But if you open a new instance of Audacity it shows no menu also... until you
change theme again.

I'm not using the une interface, but the standard gnome.

It was reported before as a problem between Rhythmbox and IM event

just increase the probability as the messages sometimes trigger the

[Bug 683722] [NEW] Sound of Rhythm box, Flash and other alsa dependant apps become cracky and noise from time to time

2010-12-01 Thread cablop
Public bug reported:

>From time to time sound played by Rhythmbox and Alsa become crappy,
cracky and noisy (for me that it starts to sound like square waves
instead of sound waves or sound like weirdly filtered waves).

Some things that "pull the trigger" was sound events like instant
mesagging events sounds (as in emesene, pidgin and skype).

The problem is more common after a long time of use of the computer,
like 12 hours or so and the more the time the more common, after three
days of continuous usage it happens every three to ten minutes.

It is also common after hibernations, and also, the more you hibernate
the more common the issue is.

If you stop playback for a while, one minute or more, then it becomes
normal again, but if you keep playing sound the issue persist, even for
hours.

To close the application, that is to close or reload a page with flash
(in order to make it reload the flash-player) or close and reopen
rhythmbox make them play the sound right, and 'solves' thew issue faster
than waiting more than a minute.

Anyway it makes it impossible to use the computer to play music in a
reliable way.

2010-11-29 Thread cablop
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 520976 ***

It is not a duplicate, because the other bug refers to SCIM and this one
refers to ibus, i don't have scim installed and the issue is here.

Also it is not a duplicate because it is blocking any kind of input,
even normal with no ibus method.

I'm running gnucash with ibus present, no scim enabled, on Lucid Lynx.
The issue is present not only for the special input but also for the
normal input.

2010-11-24 Thread cablop
Same here and not only with emesene notifications; it is happening with pidgin
and gajim notifications too.
It was happening in both Lucyd and Maverick distributions. The difference is
those creepy noises don't become music no matter how much time or songs passed.
As long as i can change the sound system in pidgin and gajim, rhythmbox does
not provide a way to configure sound settings (unexpected for a music player,
also).

[Bug 674020] Re: ibus-qt4 is not being installed by default if a qt app is installed

2010-11-19 Thread cablop
How to test it.

Install Ubuntu.
Add some ibus methods, like pinyin, chinese, japanese or composite.
Open gedit and test:
 - Test typing some accented characters on it (use an accented keyboard layout,
like spanish, french or us international)
 - Test typing via an ibus method.
As expected text enters correctly on gedit.
Install a qt based app, like Skype or Kate. I was using Skype.
Open Skype.
 - Test typing some accented characters on it.
 - Test enabling an ibus method.
As not expected text with accents is not entered and after some time it starts
to appear random characters instead of the ones you are typing.

To solve it you must manually install ibus-qt4 and restart. But the
common user of the system is unaware of the reason, there's not even a
simple warning on the issue.

The expected behavior must be for ibus to install ibus-qt4 by default or
once a qt app is installed.

2010-11-16 Thread cablop
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

How to test it:
Move or add a new clock in the bottom panel, and click it, add some locations
and let it display weather, then click it again, now expand the locations
section and see how the window moves up, then click the applet to make it
disappears, click the applet again and see how the window move too up and
disappears from the screen is small devices like netbooks.

[Bug 527267] Re: Application Indicators too wide

2010-11-16 Thread cablop
As a workaround you can remove this applet indicator and almost all icons from
it are able to stand up by themselves in the old tray, except for the envelope
one and the volume indicator. But you can grab the pulseaudio-mixer-applet to
replace the volume icon.
http://www.webupd8.org/2010/04/pulseaudio-mixer-applet-lets-you-change.html
So you can get all your space back and still see batery, network, and so on...

It is ironic that they stated the new design is to save more space, but
once removed and went back to the old behavior i have MORE space than
with the new applet... meaning the purpose failed to be accomplished at
least for some users like me, using Ubuntu on a netbook.

[Bug 527267] Re: Application Indicators too wide

2010-11-16 Thread cablop
A note in why it is not a theme issue and an applet indicator one

the variable used to fix it on themes is:

GtkMenuItem::horizontal-padding

Why are you using a variable for MENU ITEMS to space ICONS?
it is not called applet indicator icon padding or anything like that...

so the bug is using the value intended and designed for a different kind
of visual element in screen to space or pad icons in a different context

[Bug 527267] Re: Application Indicators too wide

2010-11-14 Thread cablop
It is not a Theme Issue, for the sake of heaven!
Themes had it's own standards BEFORE you started to use this applet, now you
are telling they that they have to rewrite the whole themes with all the side
effects of that, that is spacing between menus and other theme sections, just
cause you are to lazy to fix your own code and adapt to an ALREADY EXISTING
design pattern?
At least give us a place to select by ourselves how to space those things,
people, we users of netbooks can't just survive seeing how when you add icons
your menus or clock or other elements dissapear just cause one applet is to
wide... you can't also expect for us to tweak the whole interface with too many
effects aside, like misplacing menu entries and other items just to fix an
issue in one AND JUST ONE item in our screens...

sorry for being mad, but i think if you do something new you will be
mature enough to accept the responsibility of doing things well for
everyone...

and this is not mac... so i think it is not a high priority to look like
mac if the community users are not pleasan with it

also it is a usability issue... i can't access the help icon or the
clock due to this error, so priority is higher than low...

[Bug 674028] [NEW] copy-paste by keyboard shortcuts doesn't work on Winforms.

2010-11-11 Thread cablop
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dash

Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V doesn't copy or paste text in mono.
Test with an aplication like KeePass 2.x. Select a Text elsewhere, text editor

shortcut... but nothing happens. Not text is being pasted. If you right click
on some text fields they show a menu with the paste option and paste works. But
simple text fields does not offer the contextual menu, so no way to paste text
in them.

When ibus is present on the system and you install an application depending on

specific texts like chinese on it until you manually install ibus-qt.
What is expected is for ibus to install ibus-qt when qt libraries appear on

It affects Lucid. Not sure if it affects Maverick also, cause i updated

[Bug 673997] [NEW] Non latin fonts displayed in applications. Fonts substitution error.

2010-11-11 Thread cablop
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mono

When an application is being run we expect to be able to see the non-latin
characters like CJK ones.
What happens is they're being shown as empty boxes|squares.

My Ubuntu version is Maverick and i'm using the default mono and winforms
packages:
- libmono2.0-cil 2.6.7-3ubuntu1
- libmono-winforms2.0-cil 2.6.7-3ubuntu1

Afaik the problem is related to WinForms or to Ubuntu itself.
Someone addressed this as an issue in thaifonts-scalable package. But as long
as i'm not using that package and that issue is fixed for maverick, this is not
the same bug. File /etc/fonts/conf.avail/89-ttf-thai-tlwg-synthetic.conf is not
even present.

How to reproduce the issue. Lanch a mono application, like KeePass2 and
type in the search box a CJK text or paste one like 我 (for chinese) or
私、わたし (for japanese). They're instantly shown as empty boxes.

2010-11-11 Thread cablop
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 539008 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/539008

somebody said this bug is related to a config in
/etc/fonts/conf.avail/89-ttf-thai-tlwg-synthetic.conf file, but that's
not true. I does not have that package in my system and the not
substitution problem appears.

A way to test that is to open an application like KeePass 2.x with some
CJK characters in entries, all of them are being shown as empty squares.

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2010-09-02 Thread cablop
Seroiusly, Gnome is suffering of some sort of anorexia.
The project wanted to remove and declutter itself.
And that's ok.
But then, when it is ok, it started to cut more and more of itself. We say, hey
Gnome, you are cute that way! but Gnome keeps telling, i'm still fat...
We need options. Simple options, yes, but options. We can't be forced to use
something that is mostly an aestethic thing nowadays if we cannot setup it to
suit OUR sense of aesthetics.

Also, Marc... is simpliciy, the kind of simplicity Gnome is looking for,
to tell us to go down and edit the code of an screensaver? from my point
of view that's not simple... and your answer was rude... something like
"I'm not willing to code that, so go yourself and deal with the
barebones of it"...

In my opinion... if you are not willing to enhance the user
experience... why not to give this project to somebody else?

2010-09-01 Thread cablop
Won't fix?

Why... hey, that's just to bring back the old button that launched the
settings config of each screensaver...

No matter what a few people believe, some screensavers have settings to
configure, some people love screensavers, i do!

But we want to keep freedom to choose how our screensavers will work.

I wanted to use that GL slideshow one, but to a custom folder, i don't
want to show all my pictures collection, just a subset of it... and it's
too sad to realize Gnome is unwilling to give us the freedom to
choose...

Workaround:

Wait until you get the error, then go to tty4 (alt+f4) where you see the
error log. It says:

Cannot find /lib/modules/2.6.32-21-generic

Then go to tty2 (alt+f2), press enter to get a root shell and run this
command

~# cp -a /lib/modules/2.6.32-21-generic/
/target/lib/modules/2.6.32-21-generic/

I guess setting up initramfs-tools is not running in the current system,

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2010-02-26 Thread cablop
This kind of bugs are the sensible proof of why Linux is not yet a
replacement for Windows or OSX.

Can't Ubuntu fork it?

The reasons we need such settings button:

1. "I'll gift you a book, but you are not allowed to read it"
Ubuntu came with CUSTOMIZABLE screensavers but with no way to access how to
configure them. So why you made something that is not being to be used?

2. "Forcing just one screensaver model to increase the market?" They
said screensavers must work just out of the box, with default settings,
this is nonsense. We are used to configurable screensavers in other
operative systems, this is what people know to use... and developers
know to develop, this is not going to increase the market, this is going
to shrink it. Developers won't develop something with features users
can't access.

3. "You have to live with it..." Hey, are you telling us that the
screensavers defaults is what WE want? can't i just select a shape
changer screensaver to show shapes in Y favorite color? I'm not a
computer, there are no defaults for aesthetics in human beings, i like
blue, but my sister likes green, but we like the same screensaver... and
the worst, we can't set it in our fav colors...

4. "cuting our freedom" Yes, just that. We use to argue against Windows
and closed source software cause they cut our freedom... but sigh, if
we can't even configure our screensaver... how can i feel like i'm
really free using a software?

5. "we are setting what we think you need" Hey wait... don't FORCE to me
those defaults, this is MY computer, i want to be able to CONFIGURE what
is MINE

Re: [Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2009-06-19 Thread cablop
This is not exactly true, i saw the tunnel screensaver there, and i know
that screensaver has settings!

also system installs the other screensavers, popsquares for example, but we
can't use it cause its initial is lowercase and the interface don't load
them

i think it is not logic to install something you can't easily reach,
configure or even use!

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2009-06-18 Thread cablop
Sincerely i think this is one of the worst things open source can do, to
not to solve something cause it is not critical... so how can we
demonstrate this operative system could be a replacement to some other
privative operative systems if we are forcing the user to lose his
freedom and stuck with what the developers offer??

We have nice screensavers in Ubuntu, but w can use them, so we are
filling our hard disk with unreachable unusable things...

also this bug is two regressions, this bug is becoming worst release by
realease, did you notice that you not only lost the settings button (we
had it before) is lost (first regression) but we can't choose
screensavers with initial lowercase character (we had them before too,
regression number two)?

but installed screensavers could be configured, except gnome interface
is not allowing us to do it, and also those lowercased initial
screensavers are installed but gnome interface don't let us choose
them...

and sorry if i can sound angry but this bug is going to be FOUR years
old and still has no solution...

[Bug 77168] Re: KDE: Scim & Accented characters

2008-02-04 Thread cablop
I tried the options you said
GTK_IM_MODULE="scim" and QT_IM_MODULE="scim"
they does not seem to work under an spanish session.

The procedure I described mixed both problem and workaround solution.
Let's me just place the way to reproduce the problem.

0.- Install Gutsy from scratch, either Ubuntu from DVD or Ubuntu Studio, both
have the problem. You need a keyboard layout with deadkeys, then select spanish
or french keyboard layout, also if you can deal with it, install spanish or
french language support. Remember to follow all this steps not in a CJK
session, use spanish, french or english (with deadkeys support).
1.- Add Ubuntu DVD as a repository source and then add the other repositories.
Don't use gutsy-updates nor gutsy-security.
2.- Open language settings and install Chinese and Japanese support.
3.- Restart the System.
4.- Open language settings and activate complex characters input, then apply.*
5.- Restart the system.
6.- Open any gnome application, like Gedit. You cannot trigger SCIM with
ctrl+space, but you can right click and select it to input text. With or
without SCIM there's no deadkeys problem.
7.- Install any KDE application or another application like Opera. I installed
Amarok, Konversation, Konqueror and Opera. SCIM does not work in any of them.
8.- Install scim-bridge-client-qt, it also installs scim-bridge-agent.
9.- Install scim-bridge and scim-bridge-client-gtk.
10.- Restart.
11.- sudo gedit /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim and changed GTK_IM_MODULE=xim to
GTK_IM_MODULE="scim-bridge" and QT_IM_MODULE=xim to QT_IM_MODULE="scim-bridge".
12.- Restart.
13.- Then you can write chinese in gnome and kde apps, can also trigger SCIM
with ctrl+space, but you only can enter accented characters using dead keys
(like á or ü) in gnome apps, KDE broke the dead keys (like ´a or ¨u).

This is just the steps to reproduce the problem, go back to my last
post, and follow the last steps to find a workaround solution.

* I unchecked this option, applied again. I enabled again this setting,
applied and closed the window. Reopened the window and checked the
option is active - I did it cause some guides say you to repeat the
procedure twice cause just one time does not work.

[Bug 109155] Re: workrave's counter does not update

2008-01-22 Thread cablop
Thanks! That works, i can't tell workrave where to place the counters
except near the clock, but that works!

In the other hand, i think, if we value the need of a software just
based on security vulnerability, data loss or regression... that makes
me remember what propietary software does.

In this case this bug affect people with special needs, for example
computer workers with health problems. From my point of view this is an
important issue if the software is to people and specific needs
oriented...

I'll take a look about nomination on bug fixing.

Same problem here in fresh Ubuntu Gutsy installation (Ubuntu Studio,
being more precise).

About bug reports provided by Zeno Gantner: I can't understand what bug
report 626 means, doesn't seems to be attached to any project and is
deeply technical. Also bug 348845 is not on launchpad site.

Because the problem is present in Gutsy, this problem is not solved.

[Bug 77168] Re: KDE: Scim & Accented characters

2008-01-18 Thread cablop
I think, we maybe must add this bug to KDE to. Why?
I was thinking in this bug for some time, and I think, if I can write the
accents in the way I described earlier, then SCIM active works well with KDE,
then, where's the problem? Not in SCIM itself, but in the way SCIM and KDE
works when SCIM is NOT active. Maybe there's a problem on the scim-bridge or
the way KDE works with non default IM??

Just a couple of questions...

Re: [Bug 44626] Re: Can't Input Japanese Text

2007-12-31 Thread cablop
Your problem has two aspects.

The first one is, Hardy Heron is under development, then, this is unstable.
Gutsy and SCIM have problems between them...

I had some problems with SCIM and Gutsy. Then, I reinstalled all and
made a little summary of steps to make it work.

Those are placed int his bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/scim/+bug/77168/comments/7
It is related to accent problems in SCIM but I think the steps are
also useful for you on your system, specially on which packages you
must install. If not, send another note in this thread and I'll try to
check what happens on OOo.

[Bug 173894] Re: Enable SCIM render deadkeys useless in KDE/QT apps

2007-12-30 Thread cablop
I also posted this in a different bug report
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/scim/+bug/77168):

I got a "stupid" way to "solve" the deadkeys problem in Gutsy for KDE
apps...

What I did:
0.- I reinstalled Gutsy, all from scratch, and using an Ubuntu Studio version
instead the original version. *
1.- I added the Ubuntu DVD as a repository source and then added the other
repositories. I'm not using gutsy-updates nor gutsy-security. **
2.- I opened language settings and installed Chinese and Japanese support. ***
3.- Restarted the System.
4.- I opened language settings and activated complex characters input, then
applied. I unchecked this option, applied again. I enabled again this setting,
applied and closed the window. Reopened the window and checked the option is
active.
5.- Restarted the system.
6.- Opened Gedit. As expected you cannot trigger SCIM with ctrl+space, but you
can right click and select it to input text. With or without SCIM there's no
deadkeys problem.
7.- Opened Konversation and Opera to check input. Cannot choose input but
there's no dead key problem.
8.- Installed scim-qtimm. *
9.- Installed scim-bridge-client-qt, it also installs scim-bridge-agent.
10.- Installed scim-bridge and scim-bridge-client-gtk.
11.- Restarted.
12.- sudo gedit /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim and changed GTK_IM_MODULE=xim to
GTK_IM_MODULE="scim-bridge" and QT_IM_MODULE=xim to QT_IM_MODULE="scim-bridge".
13.- Restarted. #
14.- Opened Gedit and triggered SCIM. It works as expected, and there's no
problem with deadkeys.
15.- Opened Konversation and Opera. Deadkeys problem started. But you can
trigger SCIM. ##
16.- Started to think KDE it's no good for my computer, and decided to use just
gnome apps. Then did a little modification: sudo gedit /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/es,
to enable ã accent to be able to write portuguese. ###
17.- Then I just opened SCIM to configure it for Gnome. In global settings
(under interface) you found a rollover to select keyboard distribution. It said
Unknown, I changed it to Spanish (Spain) the keyb I use. Closed it and
rememebered I just need a pinyin input (chinese) and an anthy input (japanese).
Reopened and selected them. There's an additional option, others, with
spanish/european and raw input. I leave spanish/european marked.
18.- Opened Opera and triggered the SCIM. then selected spanish/european, and
wow! It works! Then, disabled the SCIM, deadkeys problem is back.
19.- Opened Konversation ad did the same, I can write spanish throug SCIM too.

20.- Remember the step number 16? Then i opened Konversation and tried to input
the ~ accent modified in this keyb to write ã... And it also works! Then SCIM
is using my main tables for input, and deadkeys works through SCIM.

Two more things
a.- I think this is not a "solution" or at least a clean solution cause you
don't need to use an IME to write spanish. But cause it works...
b.- The downside. Before reinstalled my system I was able to input chinese in
aMSN, I don't know how! And I think if I discovered I can write spanish through
SCIM I was still able to write in aMSN using spanish, english and chinese... I
have to look what I did before but I'm deeply afraid to render SCIM useless
again... A little suggestion, I though it's something related to an option in
KDE input settings scim-panel-kde... but I'm not sure. Does anybody want to try
it to enable input on aMSN, skype and related??

* This is not really an step, just a way to say I used a fresh install and the
problem is not related to standard installation.
** I think you could use them if you want, but I write it to clarify you don't
need updates or security packages to "solve" the problem
*** I found a problem in meta-package, but that's for a different issue
Dunno why, but everywhere I look in the net says you must
enable-apply-disable-apply-enable-apply this setting...
* I didin't used it, but... (umm I got out of asterisks...)
# OK, it seems to be a lil bit paranoid, but I prefer to sin being paranoid
rather than sin being to confident
## It feels to strange to be able to write english and chinese but no spanish.
### That seems to be out of scope but just wait few steps...
Of course you feel weird enough using a complex IME to write spanish in
your system.

I toke a look at /FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic setting. New points in this bug
report:

 - I have a fresh Gutsy installation (NOT an upgrade), installed totally from
scratch. So the value of this setting was for default, as you said, false. But
dead key's are disabled.
 - I forgot to mention the problem specifically related to Gutsy, not with all
distros.
 - They worked before enabling SCIM chinese and japanese input. after enabling
it SCIM was useless.
 - I changed xim for scim-bridge. This just solved the problem for GTK, not for
QT.

As Louis-Dominique says, /FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic setting set to false is
useless.

scim-bridge works well with GTK apps, but not with QT apps.
a weird thing is AMSN using TCL/TK 8.5 accepts now chinese input from SCIM, the
downside is accents are broken too for TCL/TK apps if you enable SCIM, but that
was always the beahvior of TCL/TK. But i never saw this accent broken thing in
KDE or GTK.

I'm using a fresh Gutsy installation, so no older settings are
interfering with SCIM or QT or GTK.

Um, I saw this report, but i don't know if it is useful or not to solve
the problem:

Some points:

I'm not using an old Feisty folder, I did a new Gutsy installation. Then
the problem appeared.

You said there's a solution in /FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic. I want to see this
solution, please give me a link to solve it.
As far as I know, this solution enables again the deadkeys but diable SCIM for
KDE apps; and some users, like me, need both entries, accents and chinese.
Thanks if you can give me a link to this solution.

I placed the bug in some groups, cause i don't know if it's a problem of
SCIM or a problem of QT libraries or a problem of new SCIM-bridge
package. Maybe the problem is in the scim-bridge-client-qt but there's
no package here to add the bug.

[Bug 173894] Enable SCIM render deadkeys useless in KDE/QT apps

2007-12-04 Thread cablop
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scim

Background
=

I saw similar bugs, they talk about problems in KDE session or in old
versions of Ubuntu.

This one is about
- running KDE programs under Gnome session
- with SCIM enabled for complex character entry
- in non asian locale
- in the last Gutsy version

I was using Feisty and Feisty works well, but Gutsy not, this is a lot
of backward steps.

The Problem
=

The problem is:

I installed asian language support for Chinese and Japanese. Then marked the
field "Enable support to enter complex characters".
Then restarted the machine and tried to write Chinese and Japanese. The first
issues was we're unable to use SCIM, and unable to write accents, cause dead
keys are broken. It means you press the accent key like ~ and then the vowel a
expecting ã as a result but getting ~a instead. OK, I started to read about a
solution and found we must change:

GTK_IM_MODULE=xim
QT_IM_MODULE=xim

for

GTK_IM_MODULE="scim-bridge"
QT_IM_MODULE="scim-bridge"

Of course I installed scim-bridge-client-qt and scim-bridge-client-gtk.

But the solution just worked for Gnome applications. Now i can write
chinese and accents in gnome apps like gedit. In KDE applications the
problem persists, it does not recognize dead keys, and I can just write
english and chinese, but not spanish or portuguese in KDE apps. That
turn those applications useless for productive work.
