[Bug 2063966] Re: version not compatible with python3

2024-06-28 Thread Carlos Henrique Lima Melara
Hi, dhcpig is working for sure with python 3 since version 1.5-4 (in
Debian at least, can't be sure for Ubuntu)

I don't have access to that PC now, it belongs to someone else, othere
people reported issues with their gpus, I think you should launch an ISO
before 24.04.1 correcting this with an upgraded version of drivers and
the oem installer as well

[Bug 2065349] Re: [SRU] Default user created by cloud-init confuses WSLg

2024-05-23 Thread Carlos Nihelton
Your question means that I didn't clarify enough the test I followed and
how it related to the original test plan proposed. The gap in
understanding is more due WSL specifics than cloud-init itself.

The fundamental difference between what is proposed in the bug report
and what I applied manually is: the availability of the Ubuntu-24.04
Windows application with the latest rootfs containing the patched
version of this package (wsl-setup), which drastically simplifies the
test setup. Of course that can only happen once this patch is merged and
a new build of both the rootfs image and the Windows application
submitted to the MS Store. So, the proposed test plan is complete and
correct, but requires artifacts not available by the time this SRU bug
is processed. It's rather applicable as a quality gate prior to the
release of Windows app itself and a means of detecting future regression
(our CI is capable of performing exactly that test case to detect
regressions).

The test I reported in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wsl-
setup/+bug/2065349/comments/6 is a manual workflow that behaves as if we
had such up-to-date Windows app.

It can be described in a high level structure as:

1. Set up a rootfs containing the latest version of this package (wsl-setup):
- We create a new instance, update wsl-setup and export a snapshot with the
minimum changes possible. Thus, cloud-init must be disabled (otherwise it would
run automatically - as a systemd service - and cause more changes to the
instance). Also. no other users are created as part of that set up.

2. Import that rootfs image emulating the behavior the Windows application
would have (i.e. as if we run `ubuntu2404.exe`)
- All the steps related to ensuring there is no cloud-init user-data files
to be found, `wsl --import`, `adduser` and wait on cloud-init steps. Also the
instance shutdown is needed to make the changes in `/etc/wsl.conf` to take
effect.

3. Finally, perform the actual test, which is: ensure there is no
`ubuntu` user pre-created and Wayland apps work.

I'll edit that comment to clarify that structure, so others, not
familiar with WSL specifics, may reason about what that procedure
actually achieves.

[Bug 2064189] Re: Screen flickers after installing Ubuntu 24.04

2024-05-23 Thread Carlos Gomez
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 2062951 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2062951

Well guys, yesterday I had the brilliant idea to update my Ubuntu from
23.10 to 24.04 LTS.

Silly me for not doing much research, but my laptop (which I use for
work) has burst all its graphic power, I don't know who has decided to
leave it like this, knowing that 23.10 and 24.04 are practically merged,
many things fixed about jumps to server machines and so on but goodbye
to graphics for a few months.

But if someone has this problem I give you my solution, tested on Intel
I5, I7 (from generation 11 to 14), Nvidia graphics.

From Softwares and Updates just choose the option go to Additional
Drivers, use the last option X.Org X server. Restart the machine and at
the start of the session when you choose the user at the bottom right
you will have the type of ENV desktop you want to use, set the Xorg.

With this you won't be able to use many NVIDIA features like graphics or
CUDAS processing, but you can put it in the secondary options if you
need to render images or video.

Sorry I can't give more information or details about it, I just "fixed"
20 machines in my company and I'm doing my tests, I'll put something
more when I have more data.

[Bug 2066081] [NEW] Nouveau failing to boot or glitches

2024-05-18 Thread Carlos V
Public bug reported:

I tried 24.04 on a Nvidia 4090 and It only booted on safe graphics mode,
I haven't had this issue with any other Ubuntu previous versions on the
same computer.

A lot of people with other NVIDIA cards are complaining about this on
YouTube, please release an URGENT ISO with a new nouveau driver and
kernel version to address this issue, if you don't do it soon you will
loose A LOT of users.

Proof:

[Bug 2065349] Re: [SRU] Default user created by cloud-init confuses WSLg

2024-05-10 Thread Carlos Nihelton
Tested the version 0.5.3~24.04 from noble-proposed as described below:

- Disable cloud-init via WSL2 kernel command line.
- Create a new instance without a default user with command: `ubuntu2404.exe
install --root`.
- Boot into the instance, enabled proposed and installed *only* wsl-setup via:
`apt update && apt-get install wsl-setup/noble-proposed`.
- Clean cloud-init state as a precaution: `cloud-init clean --logs`.
- Exit the WSL instance.
- Exported the instance's root filesystem to generate a new image for testing:
`wsl.exe --export Ubuntu-24.04 .\proposed-test.tar.gz`.
- Remove custom WSL2 kernel command line to re-enable cloud-init.
- Shutdown WSL with: `wsl.exe --shutdown`.
- Remove any user-data files in %USERPROFILE%/.cloud-init or
%USERPROFILE/.ubuntupro/.cloud-init.
- Import the rootfs as a new instance: `wsl --import Proposed .\proposed\
.\proposed-test.tar.gz`.
- Wait on cloud-init: `wsl -d Proposed cloud-init status --wait`.
- Check if there is any user: `ls /home; id 1000; grep -e '100[0-9]'
/etc/passwd` (all must output nothing).
- Install gtk-4-examples: `apt update && apt install -y libgles2 libgl1
gtk-4-examples`
- Create a user: `adduser u`.
- Make that user the default via `/etc/wsl.conf`: `printf "[user]\ndefault=u\n"
> /etc/wsl.conf`.
- Exit the instance and terminate it: `wsl.exe -t Proposed`.
- Start the instance: `wsl -d Proposed` (the user should now be u - not root).
- Run gtk4-demo with the default backend: `gtk4-demo`
- Run again with the wayland backend: `GDK_BACKEND=wayland gtk4-demo`.

The gtk4-demo application is shown in both ways. cloud-init didn't
create any default user. Everything worked as expected for this patch.

[Bug 2065349] [NEW] [SRU] Default user created by cloud-init confuses WSLg

2024-05-09 Thread Carlos Nihelton
Public bug reported:

[Context]
wsl-setup is a package to carry pieces of configuration specifically
implemented for a better experience with Ubuntu WSL.

A bug reported originally by Microsoft engineers, made public via
https://github.com/ubuntu/WSL/issues/468, **prevents any GUI application
relying on Wayland to start**.
The issue happens when cloud-init creates a default user ahead of the user's
request, which can happen whenever users don't supply any user-data.
WSL graphical subsystem (WSLg) expects the default user to be UID 1000, which,
being taken by cloud-init, causes the subsystem to mess with runtime dir
permissions.
The fix was implemented in https://github.com/ubuntu/wsl-setup/pull/12 and made
available in wsl-setup v0.5.3, by adding a configuration override to prevent
cloud-init from creating the default "ubuntu" user.

[Impact]
* Only WSL users creating new instances of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS are subject to
cloud-init effects.
* Currently users affected by this bug are considered early-adopters. A much
wider audience is expected with the release of 24.04.1.
* wsl-setup is exclusive to Ubuntu WSL, so no other Ubuntu product or
experience is affected.

[Test plan]
* Install the most recent version of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS application from MS Store
with the latest wsl-setup already seeded.
* Start the application on a Windows console: `ubuntu2404.exe`.
* When prompted create the default user and password via the regular WSL
launcher workflow.
* When the setup is complete and bash is shown install the `gtk-4-examples`
package with: `sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y gtk-4-examples`.
* When installation is complete, run the gtk4-demo application with the default
backend and ensure it opens correctly: `gtk4-demo`.
* Close it and relaunch it with the GDK backend set to "wayland":
`GDK_BACKEND=wayland gtk4-demo`. Assert that the application opens as before.

[Where problems could occur]
* Users familiar with cloud-init on Ubuntu might expect the creation of the
`ubuntu` user, as it happens with clouds and LXD containers.

[Other Info]
* Cloud-init support on WSL is recent enough so users should not have had
enough time to create expectations about such behavior by the time this SRU is
finished.
* A similar test workflow was proposed to ISO Tracker test case for Ubuntu WSL
to check that behavior.  Merge proposal:
https://code.launchpad.net/~cnihelton/ubuntu-manual-tests/+git/ubuntu-manual-tests/+merge/465894

[Bug 2063051] [NEW] I can't turn off my laptop HP ProBook 440 G9 Ubuntu 23.10

2024-04-21 Thread Carlos Rangel
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I can't turn off my laptop (HP Probook 440 G9)using Ubuntu 23.10. I used
command line commands like shutdown, poweroff, and systemctl poweroff, the
system just restart. I was realized about this and I had installed 6.4.0-24
-something like that-, it was working properly; unfortunately, I lost it.
Could you help me?
Thanks in advanced.
Regards.

[Bug 2052495] Re: [MIR] wsl-pro-service

2024-04-02 Thread Carlos Nihelton
Specifically adressing @iosifache concern

> 3. Command execution inside the Windows host:

With USB/IP the WSL instance gets low level access to a USB device as if it was
actually attached to the USB bus. I won't go into the details of how to get
that done, but it suffices to say that:
1. It requires installation of components on both sides: WSL instance and
Windows host
2. The daemon on the host side must be started with elevated permissions
3. Most importantly to this security concern: mounting such device won't result
in a 9p filesystem, thus the device would be skipped in the search for cmd.exe

It's possible to mount a USB device as a drvfs 9p mount point, which could fool
the current implementation of the `findCmdExe()` function. It requires:
1. The USB device partition to be attached to a WSL instance must be mounted in
the Windows host (which requires it to be formatted in one of the filesystems
that OS supports)
2. The attacker must be able to launch a command as root inside the WSL
instance to mount that partition containing a rogue `cmd.exe` binary (easily
done if they already have access to the host, not so easy if they only have
access to the WSL instance as a Linux unpriviliged user account)

Yet, by the order which the mount points are processed, the USB device
will always be mounted after the hard drive partitions, no matter which
drive letters assigned to the partitions on the Windows side. So **the
only way** the USB device partition would be picked up is in case the
user has disabled automount drives via `/etc/wsl.conf`, as there would
be no other candidate mount point to look into, resulting in the rogue
binary being executed by wsl-pro-service as root inside the WSL
instance. That means the rogue binary could do anything inside the WSL
instance, **and anything the Windows user can do** on the Windows host
(being root inside is the same as being the Windows user outside of the
WSL instance).

While that sounds dangerous, remember that the attacker already had user
level permissions to start that attack, so we are just back at where the
attack started.

Here's a demonstration of such exploit:

- Assume I have a malicious USB stick formatted as exFAT mounted on
Windows as "A:\" and containing a ransomware at path
"A:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe";

```powershell
Get-PSDrive -PsProvider 'FileSystem'
Name   Used (GB) Free (GB) Provider  Root
   - -
A  16.82 12.22 FileSystemA:\
C 362.05 33.18 FileSystemC:\
D  47.43 35.08 FileSystemD:\
```

- Somehow I managed to run the following command on the Windows host:

```powershell
wsl -u root -d Ubuntu bash -ec 'mkdir -p /mnt/a && mount -t drvfs "A:\\" /mnt/a'
```

- My mountpoints inside the Ubuntu WSL instance will look like:

```bash
 mount | grep drvfs
C:\ on /mnt/c type 9p
(rw,noatime,dirsync,aname=drvfs;path=C:\;uid=1001;gid=1002;symlinkroot=/mnt/,mmap,access=client,msize=65536,trans=fd,rfd=5,wfd=5)
D:\ on /mnt/d type 9p
(rw,noatime,dirsync,aname=drvfs;path=D:\;uid=1001;gid=1002;symlinkroot=/mnt/,mmap,access=client,msize=65536,trans=fd,rfd=5,wfd=5)
A:\ on /mnt/a type 9p
(rw,relatime,dirsync,aname=drvfs;path=A:\;symlinkroot=/mnt/,mmap,access=client,msize=65536,trans=fd,rfd=3,wfd=3)
```

Notice that the "A:\\" drive is still the last, so we'll find the
system's cmd.exe.

Now asume the same setup with the automount WSL feature disabled. My
mount points would then look like:

```bash
 mount | grep drvfs
A:\ on /mnt/a type 9p
(rw,relatime,dirsync,aname=drvfs;path=A:\;symlinkroot=/mnt/,mmap,access=client,msize=65536,trans=fd,rfd=3,wfd=3)
```

Then the ramsonware would be executed.

Yet, if the attacker can run the wsl command to mount the partition,
they could have already ran the ramsonware right away, no need to run in
circles exploiting other binaries to give them permission they already
have.

[Bug 2056543] Re: Ubuntu 24.04 breaking gnome, showing "Oops.." requesting logout, and several instabilities when using GDM3 instead of Waylan after upgrading from 22.04 to 24.04

2024-03-11 Thread Carlos H Simoes
Yes.

I reproduced it exactly here to validate, when trying to close an APP by
clicking on the dock, when closing, the session was immediately logged
out.

A few days ago, I tried to disable Waylan, but the problems seem to
recur more often. But it happens anyway.

In some cases, for example, if you try to just block the current
session, it also generates behavior.

Below is the result of journalctl attached to this.

Thanks!

[Bug 2056609] [NEW] right-click and "extract here" does not give the same result as clicking into the tar.gz and hitting "extract"

2024-03-08 Thread carlos
Public bug reported:

right-click and "extract here" does not give the same result as clicking
into the tar.gz and hitting "extract".

I have a tar.gz file where if I run "tar -xzvf " I get a file
that is 30 GB in size.

Similarly, if I double left-click on the file, and click "extract" on
the top left, then it extracts to about 30 GB.

However, if I extract the same file by right clicking on it and hitting
"extract here", I get an output that is about 5GB in size.

If needed I can provide the file. Just contact me via email:
carlos.gonza...@pivotal.aero

Doubt it's relevant, but the file is an image built using yocto.

[Bug 1973351] [NEW] Screenshot tool freezes on Chromium with secondary menu open

2022-05-13 Thread Carlos
Public bug reported:

Hi, I have found a behavior that I'm able to reproduce consistently (I
have not tried with other browsers).

Here are the steps to reproduce (should work on a clean Ubuntu 22.04
installation):

1. Install Chromium (apt install chromium-browser)
2. Open chromium
3. Open a website
4. Right click on an empty section of the website, so the secondary menu will
open (the one that contains the "Back", "Reload", "Save as..." options)
5. Press the PrntScrn key, making the new screenshot UI to appear

The screenshot UI freezes and cannot be closed neither by pressing Esc
nor any other key combination.

[Bug 1968720] [NEW] Missing font on the Flutter installer UI in WSL

2022-04-12 Thread Carlos Nihelton
Public bug reported:

Since in WSL we don't have a real complete snap setup and the Flutter UI
sets the window title by using GTK+ API, it's necessary to make the
fonts-ubuntu package available in the system to avoid the bad user
experience of not being able to display the window title.

[Bug 1960179] [NEW] Focal images not being published to Vagrant Cloud

2022-02-06 Thread Carlos Rodrigues
Public bug reported:

Focal64 images at https://app.vagrantup.com/ubuntu/boxes/focal64 are now
3 months old, although the latest built at https://cloud-
images.ubuntu.com/focal/ is just 6 days old.

Bionic64 images are up to date, and I can't find any information about
focal images not being published to vagrant cloud on purpose, so I
suspect this may be a problem.

[Bug 1926312]

2021-11-12 Thread Carlos-0
(In reply to Ilyahoo Proshel from comment #1)
> Created attachment 13620 [details]
> rif_MA updated locale file
>
> We update the names and text in the locale file

This needs to be posted to libc-al...@sourceware.org for review.

Along with that review it would be good if you could include a test case
for Tarifit:

- Add localedata/rif_MA.UTF-8.in with expected sort order for data.
- Add rif_MA.UTF-8 to test-input

This should add rif_MA.UTF-8 testing to glibc to ensure the sorting
matches your expectations and stays this way going forward. This
prevents accidental breakage in collation when refactoring during ISO
14651 updates.

[Bug 1932579] Re: snap pt_BR locale shows warning every time

2021-09-17 Thread Carlos Eduardo Alves
@iogui, every system I've tried works well with that workaround (4
installations with Ubuntu 20.04). Please reinstall language-pack-pt-base
an try again.

Yes, it is a binary file, a gettext .po compiled into a .mo. The sed is a quick
workaround that works fine for me even with the binary. If you continue having
problems, another way is retranslating with these commands:
```
sudo cp /usr/share/locale-langpack/pt/LC_MESSAGES/snappy.mo
/usr/share/locale-langpack/pt/LC_MESSAGES/snappy.mo~
msgunfmt /usr/share/locale-langpack/pt/LC_MESSAGES/snappy.mo > /tmp/snappy.po
sed -i 's/o directório de destino/O directório de destino/' /tmp/snappy.po # or
edit with PoEditor
sudo msgfmt /tmp/snappy.po -o
/usr/share/locale-langpack/pt/LC_MESSAGES/snappy.mo
```

I can't find the origin of these translations to contribute to
language-pack-pt-base.
Do you know about these translations and how to contribute?
I only find some git hooks in the sources manipulating translation contents,
but don't understood clearly how it is done. Some help is welcome.

[Bug 1932579] Re: snap pt_BR locale shows warning every time

2021-08-26 Thread Carlos Eduardo Alves
This bug also prevents the use of snap command autocomplete, echoing these
error messages when TAB is pressed
```
$ snap [TAB]2021/08/26 11:39:40.041113 main.go:176: description of
prepare-image's "" is lowercase in locale "pt_BR": "o directório de
destino"
```

I found that there is a typo in the file
"/usr/share/locale-langpack/pt/LC_MESSAGES/snappy.mo".
```
$ dpkg -S /usr/share/locale-langpack/pt/LC_MESSAGES/snappy.mo
language-pack-pt-base: /usr/share/locale-langpack/pt/LC_MESSAGES/snappy.mo
$ dpkg -l language-pack-pt-base
ii  language-pack-pt-base 1:20.04+20210802 all  translations for
language Portuguese
```

An available workaround is to fix the file manually...
```
sudo sed -i 's/o directório de destino/O diretório de destino/'
/usr/share/locale-langpack/pt/LC_MESSAGES/snappy.mo
```
Probably must be fixed into language-pack-pt-base translation sources.

Or this can be interpreted as a bug in snapd that imposes capitalization
rules on translations, at some "main.go" at line 176, as the message says.
I've downloaded snapd sources and found this validation on "cmd/snap/main.go":
```
$ cd /tmp && apt source snapd
$ sed '174,177!d' /tmp/snapd-*/cmd/snap/main.go
// note IsLower != !IsUpper for runes with no upper/lower.
if unicode.IsLower(r) && !strings.HasPrefix(desc,
"login.ubuntu.com") && !strings.HasPrefix(desc, cmdName) {
noticef("description of %s's %q is lowercase: %q",
cmdName, optName, desc)
}
```

Thank you Alex, Steve,
The developer did not respond, so I guess Red Hat Security team decided to act
on the vulnerability advisory.

Thank you guys for following up on this.

2021-05-23 Thread Juan Carlos Tique Rangel
Public bug reported:

Despues de actualizar al 18.04 no me deja pasar al 20.04 a travez del
GUI, el error con las instrucciones que me aparecen son:

This was likely caused by:
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge
package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA and
try the upgrade again.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If you want to
investigate this yourself the log files in '/var/log/dist-upgrade' will
contain details about the upgrade. Specifically, look at 'main.log' and

2021-04-30 Thread Carlos A.
I have the same problem after updating to 21.04. The error is:

usrmerge (24ubuntu3)...

FATAL ERROR:
Both /bin/ksh and /usr/bin/ksh exist.
Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

$ sudo /usr/lib/usrmerge/convert-usrmerge

FATAL ERROR:
Both /bin/ksh and /usr/bin/ksh exist.

You can try correcting the errors reported and running again
/usr/lib/usrmerge/convert-usrmerge until it will complete without errors.
Do not install or update other Debian packages until the program
has been run successfully.

[Bug 1874194] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 HDMI connected, no boot

2021-02-22 Thread Carlos Augusto França Schettini
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1872159 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1872159

The same issue.
Notebook Asus K501 with Nvidia card and LG external monitor. It works better
with the Video Noveau driver than Nvidia 460 (when scaling the monitors, but
this I another issue). The build-in monitor is 4k and the external one is 2k
resolution.
Everytime I need to reboot I need to unplug the HDMI, else the boot fails.
What I think curious is that the systems gives the preference to the secondary
monitor instead the build-in, showing the GRUB or the logig after suspend.
I recently migrate from Windows 10 to Ubuntu-Mate... I learned how to 'survive'
this annoying behavior, but would appreciate very much any help to fix.

[Bug 1915968] [NEW] grub is crashing. I think it doesn't have enought space on EFI

2021-02-17 Thread Carlos Vera
Public bug reported:

A fatal error occurred while installing Ubuntu, however it had already
happened to me while trying to install Archlinux, I actually pass to
Ubuntu, because of the automatic process, however, in both cases the
fatal error happened with grub. But in Arch i got more info of the
moment and the message (I took a photo):

It was after the command:
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot

And the message said:
grub-install: error: cannot open directory `/boot/grub/locale`: No such file or
directory.

I tryed creatitng it manually with mkdir, but I got the following message:
error: No space left on device

The EFI partition was mounted in /boot, but I think it is too small (99
MB) so grub-install is crashing as it seems that it needs to add write
folder and files on it.

I hope that may be useful.

Regards

Confirmed on my HP Laptop as my wifi isn't being detected after this
upgrade. Whats weird is my wifi switch on the keyboard is now the
airplane mode and causing issues. Currently tethering off my phone to
write this message. Please fix as this bricked my wifi card built into
this HP 8640P workbook.
