[Bug 1556275] Re: Extending the search paths
This matter has been long debated within Mame packagers, and has finally been agreed that: - configuration and runtime files and subdirectories must lie in the hidden directory ~/.mame. The reason is that the user doesn't need to see them though he/she may like to (e.g. to share the snapshot taken, or the savestate files etc.) - resource files and subdirectories must lie in the non-hidden directory ~/mame. The reason is that the user can easily place there any personal needed file (let me stress the fact that only a limited number of roms are legally available for free, the vast majority requires owning a licence or the original PCB and can _not_ be distributed) - the user can override these rules at will in a personal ~/.mame/mame.ini file, or editing /etc/mame.ini at his/her convenience >> For resource files (roms, samples etc.) a subdirectory is more appropriate. > I think you meant a non-hidden directory as a subdirectory could also take > place in "$HOME/.mame". Yes, of course. :) I'm sorry, I should have checked twice before posting. > If the user does show the .mame folder by default, she can as well move her > roms > to .mame and only have .mame in the config file. This can be easily accomplished by copying /etc/mame in ~/.mame/ and tweaking it > For the sake of simplicity, there should only be one ROM's path Definitely, referring to the user personal files. In /etc/mame.ini there are many concatenated paths to manage files distributed in the package (e.g. artworks) and still allow usage of personal resource files of the same type. ** Changed in: mame (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1556275 Title: Extending the search paths To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mame/+bug/1556275/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 991498] [NEW] 12.04 istaller doesn't consider the ethernet cable and stops running when not finding wireless card drive
Public bug reported: I beg your pardon for my horrible english. From Ubuntu web site: “Ubuntu is easy to use. It’s easy to trial and install. You don’t have to be an expert. Ubuntu’s quick and easy to get started.” “I use Ubuntu because I need a system that is easy to set up and maintain for the family, that allows them to do what they need and want easily, quickly and without a lot of input.” (Drew Kwashnak) It seems that for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (both ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso and ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64.iso) this is not the case. On my computer (ASUS P5QPRO, 64 bit quadricore, ram 8GB, 2 disks 1,6 TB total) are installed: on first disk, Windows 7, openSuSe 12.1 (KDE) e Debian 5.0 (KDE); on second one (and until april, 25), LinuxMint 12 (Gnome). On first disk, a dedicated partition for virtual systems – mounted from both openSuSe and LinuxMint and reserved to Virtualbox - 32 bit guest systems are installed: Windows XP, Debian 6.0 (KDE) and until april, 25 Ubuntu 11.10 (Gnome). Network interfaces are: eth0, the classic ethernet cable (Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller) wlan0 (BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller). Wlan0 – which needs b43-fwcatter firmware – is not configurated at the moment, because I prefer the ethernet cable. But both openSuSe and others Os (including Ubuntu 11.10) do the istallation using ethernet cable; at first login user can download and install b43-fwcatter firmware. Well, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS istallation (in place of LinuxMint) failed. With my great surprise, the istaller didn't consider the ethernet cable (!) and stopped running because couldn't find b43-fwcatter firmware. In order to give it the firmware, I followed instructions of the Ubuntu site https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/installation-guide/amd64/loading-firmware.html, but it failed again: Ubuntu istaller does not consider the ethernet cable!! So I have burned ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64.iso. The alternate istaller worked very well. But at first boot … here you are: Ubuntu stops again (no login screen) because it cannot find b43-fwcatter firmware. It doesn't matter at all there is an ethernet cable!! Trying to fix the problem, I booted failsafe kernel, reaching root shell. But the istallation was so minimal that I gave up, restoring LinuxMint. As last attempt, I decided to install the guest system Ubuntu 12.04 (32 bit), configuring VirtualBox so that the Ubuntu istaller could only see the ethernet cable. Istallation was successful. At this point I want to do some considerations and expect people will agree with me. First at all, stopping istallation without using ethernet cable is not a good idea. Ubuntu is seen as an operating system easy to use; so during last years it was the first Linux operating system alternative to Windows. It was the operating system that Windows users (who only know setup.exe, windows installer …) chose for their first experience in the Linux world, because it was easy to get started. It's so easy imagine what a Windows user can have in mind when troubleshooting with an istaller that – ignoring the cable – stops running if cannot find a wlan driver! He is going back to Windows (I hope he had made the backup), considering Linux a forbidden world! And Windows will again be the favorite, keeping his position on the market. I expect to find another enhanced version of Ubuntu 12.04 iso, which I would like to run on my daughter's computer (she is still running Ubuntu 9.04, which was so easy to install!). Thank you very match for you attention. @evan: thanks for all your suggestion, which witness how deep you looked inside the package. And teach me a number of new things as well. :) 1. No, mame-tools does not need mame, ldplayer was responsible for such dependency and is now gone. I pointed this out in changelog too. 2. xmame has been a port to X, superseded by mame; the aim is to replace all the installed xmame-* packages with mame. Hence the replace/breaks/conflicts or the like. 3. Good one. dh_usrlocal is now responsible of the /usr/local/share/games/mame dir subdirs. 4. Maintainer e-mail address recovered. That was a classic cut paste typo. Sorry. :( 5. Fixed dependencies IMHO. Could you please give me your opinion on the new arrangement? 6. get-orig-source is more than a best practice, I learned from MOTU's, so I thought its presence is nearly mandatory. I'll point it out next time however. 7. I understood from the sponsorship queue guidelines debian.tar would suffice for upstream revisions. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Sponsorship/SponsorsQueue No problem either. :) Here we go with the updated archives. Thank you again! [Bug 600118] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGSEGV after closing all files
Dear Christopher, I'd like to help You, but unfortunately the original crash happened on June 30th 2010, and I cannot remember which file was last opened. Since then, I experienced this bug almost daily, with many different files. Therefore, on September I decided to hard attack the problem and I spent a whole weekend trying to catch the situation running OpenOffice from inside gdb. However, incredible to say, I noticed that OpenOffice never crashes this way when ran from inside gdb! So I'm actually unable to understand what to do to catch the bug. I never used LibreOffice at all. I suppose that OpenOffice is the official office suite for Ubuntu, isn't it? On the other way, I reported an existing problem (almost daily crash events!) of OpenOffice ... How could I help You to identify the crash reason? [Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing
Ok. I installed Maverick, and now the situation has became even worst. Help program crashes during its startup. The main windows tries to open, but after a while it crashes (without displaying nothing). My previous complaint was about the procedure https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures which its almost tricky for a normal user. I mean: I spent a lot of time trying to get a good bug report. However it was not possible (see comments above #11, #12 and #13. Now I upgraded to Maverick. I followed again the procedure at wiki pages. The command bash list-symbols-packages-v2.sh -p $(pidof -s yelp) is not usable: yelp never runs: it crashes always at startup. See attached file yelp-logmessages.txt for the messages issued by yelp to command line. Therefore I tried list-dbgsym-packages-v2.sh /usr/bin/yelp. It doesn't work. Its output was unuseful (see attached file list-dbgsym- packages-v2.sh-output.txt So far I was not sure to have all the tools ok for the debugging. However I tried to go on with wiki instructions. Obviously I was not able to attach a gdb session to the running yelp program, because the yelp program never runs: it crashes in a while. Therefore I tried to run yelp from inside gdb, even if this approach is not described into the wiki pages (and please, remember English is not my language). Incredible to say, yelp doesn't crashes if run inside gdb. It works, until I try to print. When I try to print, it crashes. Please, now see attached file yelp-gdb-log.txt where You see again the crash info. Many thanks so far. (Please, consider that I'm now tracking some bugs I crashed on my computer. I subscribed launchpad for this purpose. This bug seems that it is not seen but anybody else, isn't it?) Ciao ... happy new year ... Sorry to bother You with further comments. Let me complain about this bug management method. I notified You a REAL bug. I spent many time (hours) to investigate the problem according to the instruction You wrote me. I discovered that the crash vanished when running the application from inside valgrind. Start-Date: 2010-09-15 10:52:16 Upgrade: libsmbclient (3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.1, 3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.2), smbclient (3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.1, 3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.2), nvidia-current (256.52-0ubuntu0sarvatt3~lucid, 260.19.04-0ubuntu0~xup2~lucid), nvidia-current-modaliases (256.52-0ubuntu0sarvatt3~lucid, 260.19.04-0ubuntu0~xup2~lucid), libwbclient0 (3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.1, 3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.2), samba-common (3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.1, 3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.2), nvidia-glx-185 (256.52-0ubuntu0sarvatt3~lucid, 260.19.04-0ubuntu0~xup2~lucid), samba-common-bin (3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.1, 3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.2), winbind (3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.1, 3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.2), nvidia-185-modaliases (256.52-0ubuntu0sarvatt3~lucid, 260.19.04-0ubuntu0~xup2~lucid), nvidia-settings (256.44-0ubuntu0sarvatt~lucid, 260.19.04-0ubuntu0sarvatt~lucid) End-Date: 2010-09-15 10:55:45 After I got new nvidia 185 upgrade, the problem vanished again. [Bug 459639] Re: X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot
Hi there. I removed the 2 seconds delay workaround some time ago, after the latest nvidia drivers update. Later, the problem/bug came back: however I missed to add the 2 seconds delay trick, and it vanished some days later. I noticed that this peculiar behaviour happened when some automatic update was performed... I mean: On Sept 3rd these packages have been updated: Start-Date: 2010-09-03 09:06:18 Upgrade: libgudev-1.0-0 (151-12, 151-12.1), usb-creator-gtk (0.2.22, 0.2.22.1), udev (151-12, 151-12.1), python-aptdaemon (0.11+bzr345-0ubuntu4, 0.11+bzr345-0ubuntu4.1), aptdaemon (0.11+bzr345-0ubuntu4, 0.11+bzr345-0ubuntu4.1), wget (1.12-1.1ubuntu2, 1.12-1.1ubuntu2.1), python-aptdaemon-gtk (0.11+bzr345-0ubuntu4, 0.11+bzr345-0ubuntu4.1), libudev0 (151-12, 151-12.1), usb-creator-common (0.2.22, 0.2.22.1), mountall (2.15, 2.15.1), usb-creator (0.2.22, 0.2.22.1) End-Date: 2010-09-03 09:09:06 After this update the bug comes back. On Sept 08th these packages have been update: Start-Date: 2010-09-08 10:11:02 Upgrade: gdebi (0.6.0ubuntu1, 0.6.0ubuntu2), gdebi-core (0.6.0ubuntu1, 0.6.0ubuntu2), sudo (1.7.2p1-1ubuntu5.1, 1.7.2p1-1ubuntu5.2), gwibber-service (2.30.1-0ubuntu1, 2.30.2-0ubuntu1), gwibber (2.30.1-0ubuntu1, 2.30.2-0ubuntu1), python-lazr.restfulclient (0.9.11-1ubuntu1, 0.9.11-1ubuntu1.1), lftp (4.0.2-1, 4.0.2-1ubuntu0.1) End-Date: 2010-09-08 10:11:45 After this update the bug vanished. I can't understand which package update trigged this behaviour ... Public bug reported: Binary package hint: btpd New upstream version 0.16 for btpd was already waiting for upload in maverick, unfortunately it simply missed FF for no reason other than Sponsor Team overload. [Bug 613652] Re: [needs-packaging] [upgrade] btpd new upstream 0.16
Here's the new debian.tar.gz; packaging has undergone an heavy rework: * upgrade source format to 3.0 * switch from dpatch to quilt * debian/copyright compliance with DEP-5 * use of dh script in debian/rules * many other improvements and a general better compliance with recent packaging recommendations A build for Maverick is also available on my PPA: https://edge.launchpad.net/~c.falco/+archive/ppa/+packages Hope to see it uploaded before FF. :) Thanks, Cesare. ** Attachment added: btpd_0.16-0ubuntu1.debian.tar.gz http://launchpadlibrarian.net/53158244/btpd_0.16-0ubuntu1.debian.tar.gz ** Changed in: btpd (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed ** Tags added: patch -- [needs-packaging] [upgrade] btpd new upstream 0.16 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/613652 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
