[Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade

2013-11-01 Thread christopher pijarski
@vuanomarco and @niniendowarior

Until upgrading to 13.10 everything worked fine for me - even with an external
monitor attached to my dell inspiron 7520 (with a radeon hd 7700m series card).
After the upgrade I got a black screen after logging into unity and was able
track it back to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1054257
(compiz opengl plugin crashes with Fatal: glXQueryExtensionsString is NULL for
screen 0 message). I have no idea why it suddenly cropped up.
I even reinstalled the entire system to see whether it changes anything, all to
no avail.
Right now I am running on an UEFI install with GPT partition table and this
last problem might be connected to that (although AMD claims to have added UEFI
support to their driver), but I can't be sure, because I had the blank screen
problem before reformatting the hard disk.

2013-10-26 Thread christopher pijarski
could anyone point me to the dual head bug on the amd site? and, did
maybe anyone come up with a workaround for it? I am using a laptop with
a second screen attached and even if the laptop screen is off the
secondary screen does not come out of sleep alive, and I get a black
screen after logging into the system...

[Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade

2013-05-04 Thread christopher pijarski
Hello, I am just writing to say that there is also a workaround for raring.
I've been searching for this for some time so I thought that maybe this will
help somebody in a similar situation: the lastest intel driver apparently
causes trouble so reverting to the driver from the quantal repos makes the 13.4
driver work beautifully!
Solution thanks to https://launchpad.net/~andvaranaut from his bugreport
#1174278

[Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in Hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade

2012-12-10 Thread christopher pijarski
ok, at this time there is only one way that work on my computer running
quantal (Dell 7520 SE, i7-3612QM CPU, AMD Radeon HD 7700M Series) and
that is beil's method:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12386383postcount=536

Thank you, beidl! It took me three days to find this solution (and I
tried all of them in this and other discussions). So until fglrx starts
playing nice with the intel driver, this is the best way to have a
working accelerated Xorg server.

You should also have a look at his amd-indicator:
https://github.com/beidl/amd-indicator. great stuff.

cheers, I thought I'd never get it to work (tried on Fedora for
months...)

2011-08-18 Thread christopher pijarski
Hello, with the audio-dev ppa things start working better (no interrupts
problem), except for capturing sound: external mic is still cracking and
internal mic not working at all (just noise). Is there a way to maybe
tweak the setup with HDA_Analyzer? Has anybody had any success with
getting this to work?

Ubuntu Natty on Asus UL12FT (Realtek ALC269VB) - how come ot works on
the ASUS 1215T? Doesn't this model have the same sound hardware? (see
comment 26)

Can I do anything to help with this?

[Bug 617356] Re: Super-shortcuts for apps, files, and workspace switcher

2010-10-06 Thread christopher pijarski
What about super+t (Trash)?
There is one more thing - in gnome, when no window is active, shortcuts don't
work - eg. try to summon gnome-do with all windows down, and the desktop
inactive. In unity, if all windows are hidden (super+d), or none open, there is
no way to summon gnome-do (in gnome you had to click the desktop first). Is
there a way to address that?

as a default, gnome-do uses super+space, so in unity you have to change
to ctrl+space for example, but there is no way to get it to work, unless
you have window open and focused.

[Bug 617356] Re: Super-shortcuts for apps, files, and workspace switcher

2010-10-05 Thread christopher pijarski
in compiz, they are global, but customizable: super+e → expose; super+w
→ all windows on the current desktop; super+a → all windows. gnome-shell
and unity put the expose mode together with the all windows view, wich
is why I find both better than compiz in terms of window management;
what makes unity better than gnome-shell, in my opinion, is the side bar
which is just perfect in terms of usability and the alt+tab window
switcher, which only shows the windows on the given workspace (in gnome-
shel this is a major annoyance). I would suggest one more shortcut:
super+space for the main menu (when you click on the ubuntu icon)
make the results browsable with the arrow keys. that would make unity a
fast, responsive, out-of-your-way shell - just gorgeous.

Thanks for listening,

krzysztof

2010-10-03 Thread christopher pijarski
+1
The only thing that prevents me from using Unity on my laptop on day-to-day
basis is the lack of the above shortcuts. With those shortcuts implemented
(apart from the desktop expose view it would be great to have an additional
view of the windows on the current workspace, eg. super+e for 'desktop expose'
and super+w for 'current workspace expose'), for me, it is the desktop of the
future.

Thanks

[Bug 544469] Re: iSight webcam on Macbook Pro does not work

2010-05-29 Thread christopher pijarski
@nicolasfdezv

I experience exactly the same problem, what is more, it seems that ift-
load has the 05ac:8300 ID hard-coded into it, so even changing the udev-
rule doesn't change anything (my isight webcam registers as 05ac:8507)

reloading uvcvideo gives me the already known output:

[ 247.745593] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device Built-in iSight (05ac:8507)
[ 247.745605] uvcvideo: No valid video chain found.
[ 247.745643] usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo

and trying to manually load the firmware

sudo /usr/lib/udev/ift-load --firmware /lib/firmware/isight.fw

gives the following output:

ift-load: USB device 0x05AC:0x8300 not found
ift-load: No iSight found

it seems the loader always looks for the device with the ID
0x05AC:0x8300, whereas the actual ID seems to vary. does this make any
sense?

this would also explain why the webcam works after rebooting from OSX -
the firmware is already loaded so ift-load isn't needed.

i hope this helps, thanks.

[Bug 569667] Re: Error communicating with gnome-keyring-daemon

2010-04-26 Thread christopher pijarski
I am sorry fo the post above - it turned out to be a problem with my home
folder - I reinstalled again yesterday and transferred only the crucial folders
and setting one by one; now everything is working like a charm. The fact
remains though that this happened after an update, I have no idea why.
Keyring working again as it should.

[Bug 569667] Re: Error communicating with gnome-keyring-daemon

2010-04-25 Thread christopher pijarski
The same problem here, but I think this is a wider problem, too - the RC
(specifically speaking - the updates after RC) really rendered my computer
useless:
1. I have to enter all the passwords for everything all over again (I get the
communication with keyring error)
2. neither nm-applet nor gnome-power-manager start with the session (yes, they
are in the session startup items), I have to start them manually later
3. the whole admistrative access scheme seems not to work : I can't add any new
users (the system won't bring up the unlock/authorization dialog so nothing
happens), I can't add any hardware drivers (the system tells me I don't have
the permissions, unless I start jockey with gksudo, but I shouldn't be supposed
to!)
4. the nvidia driver doesn't work any more (I don't know in what way that has
to do with the rest but all the above symptoms appeared at the same time)
In sum, my system is suddenly half useless and a big hassle to work with; I
know it is RC still but 4 days before release this seems to be a major
regression!

Just to make sure it was not my specific configuration/upgrade that was
the cause I re-installed RC from scratch and always ended up with the
above. Any help would be very much appreciated, Thanks!

[Bug 393534] Re: [karmic] attaching certain file causes evolution to choke taking more than 600MB of memory, while composing an e-mail

2009-10-30 Thread christopher pijarski
I do experience the same problem, from time to time to time dragging an
attachment from nautlus will produce the described symptoms. IMO this
doesn't have anything to do with the size of the file, though - try
using the send to dialog in nautilus - this way evolutions ends up
eating all the resources in 100% of cases, even with files (odt) as
small as 33 Kb, at least this is how it look on my machine (macbook pro
5,5, Karmic Beta).

What do you mean by fixed the problem?
Both solution I found on the forums and on launchpad, i.e. deleting folders.db
or deleting the respective .index .ev-summary and .cmeta files MAKES ALL YOUR
METADATA GO AWAY. So this is what I've been tagging my mails for? I don't
understand why the importance of this bug is low.
The problem happened to me a second time in six months and again I lost all my

IMO this is a SERIOUS showstopper.

2009-04-19 Thread christopher pijarski
I experience the same issues with a macbook pro rev. 1. After an upgrade
do Jaunty RC1 no wifi at all (no wifi module loaded). When I added ath5k
to /etc/modules it didn't really work, the only way to get a working
connection was inserting the module manually after startup. What is
more, the default module just made the cpu spin @ 100% to no avail; I
had to enable backport-modules to get it working at all. Until now i
dodn't succeed in getting a working connection after startup :(
(excluding the madwifi driver that works, but then it hangs after every
suspend, which is a known issue). In Intrepid the ath5k driver worked,
not flawlessy but it was allright...

don't recommend this method - did it myself and regret it. Myaby the

Re: [Bug 28737] Re: Cinepaint writes 8 byte large files

2008-10-13 Thread christopher pijarski
Hello,

no, this bug is no longer an issue I think; atm I am using Cinepaint
0.23 from cvs and everything is fine, except one thing - whenever I was
opening tif files whose names were numbers only and I chose to save as
and overwrite the given files (I did that to apply color profiles) the
program crashed every time. It took me a whole day to understand what
was going on (at first I thought I might have v4 profiles but I didn').
when there are other characters in the names this doesn't happen ever.

Cheers,

krzyszttof
